A continuous/discrete fractional Noether's theorem

We prove a fractional Noether's theorem for fractional Lagrangian systems invariant under a symmetry group both in the continuous and discrete cases. This provides an explicit conservation law (first integral) given by a closed formula which can be algorithmically implemented. In the discrete case, the conservation law is moreover computable in a finite number of steps.

Helmholtz's inverse problem of the discrete calculus of variations

We derive the discrete version of the classical Helmholtz condition. Precisely, we state a theorem characterizing second order finite differences equations admitting a Lagrangian formulation. Moreover, in the affirmative case, we provide the class of all possible Lagrangian formulations.

Existence of a weak solution for fractional Euler-Lagrange equations

In this paper, we state with a variational method a general theorem providing the existence of a weak solution $u$ for fractional Euler-Lagrange equations of the type: $$ \dfrac{\partial L}{\partial x} (u,D^α_- u,t) + D^α_+ (\dfrac{\partial L}{\partial y} (u,D^α_- u,t)) = 0 $$ on a real interval $[a,b]$ and where $D^α_-$ and $D^α_+$ are the fractional derivatives of Riemann-Liouville of order $0 < α< 1$.

Non shifted calculus of variations on time scales with Nabla-differentiable Sigma

In calculus of variations on general time scales, an integral Euler-Lagrange equation is usually derived in order to characterize the critical points of non shifted Lagrangian functionals, see e.g. [R.A.C. Ferreira and co-authors, Optimality conditions for the calculus of variations with higher-order delta derivatives, Appl. Math. Lett., 2011]. In this paper, we prove that the Nabla-differentiability of the forward jump operator Sigma is a sharp assumption in order to obtain an Euler-Lagrange equation of differential form. Furthermore, this differential form allows us to prove a Noether-type theorem providing an explicit constant of motion for differential Euler-Lagrange equations admitting a symmetry.

Fractional fundamental lemma and fractional integration by parts formula -- Applications to critical points of Bolza functionals and to linear boundary value problems

In the first part of the paper, we prove a fractional fundamental (du Bois-Reymond) lemma and a fractional variant of the integration by parts formula. The proof of the second result is based on an integral representation of functions possessing Riemann-Liouville fractional derivatives, derived in this paper too. In the second part of the paper, we use the previous results to give necessary optimality conditions of Euler-Lagrange type (with boundary conditions) for fractional Bolza functionals and to prove an existence result for solutions of linear fractional boundary value problems. In the last case we use a Hilbert structure and the Stampacchia theorem.

Pontryagin maximum principle for optimal sampled-data control problems

In this short communication, we first recall a version of the Pontryagin maximum principle for general finite-dimensional nonlinear optimal sampled-data control problems. This result was recently obtained in [L. Bourdin and E. Tr{é}lat , Optimal sampled-data control, and generalizations on time scales, arXiv:1501.07361, 2015]. Then we discuss the maximization condition for optimal sampled-data controls that can be seen as an average of the weak maximization condition stated in the classical Pontryagin maximum principle for optimal (permanent) controls. Finally, applying this theorem, we solve a linear-quadratic example based on the classical parking problem.

Optimal sampled-data control, and generalizations on time scales

In this paper, we derive a version of the Pontryagin maximum principle for general finite-dimensional nonlinear optimal sampled-data control problems. Our framework is actually much more general, and we treat optimal control problems for which the state variable evolves on a given time scale (arbitrary non-empty closed subset of R), and the control variable evolves on a smaller time scale. Sampled-data systems are then a particular case. Our proof is based on the construction of appropriate needle-like variations and on the Ekeland variational principle.

Existence of minimizers for generalized Lagrangian functionals and a necessary optimality condition --- Application to fractional variational problems

We study dynamic minimization problems of the calculus of variations with generalized Lagrangian functionals that depend on a general linear operator $K$ and defined on bounded-time intervals. Under assumptions of regularity, convexity and coercivity, we derive sufficient conditions ensuring the existence of a minimizer. Finally, we obtain necessary optimality conditions of Euler-Lagrange type. Main results are illustrated with special cases, when $K$ is a general kernel operator and, in particular, with $K$ the fractional integral of Riemann-Liouville and Hadamard. The application of our results to the recent fractional calculus of variations gives answer to an open question posed in [Abstr. Appl. Anal. 2012, Art. ID 871912; doi:10.1155/2012/871912].

Pontryagin Maximum Principle for finite dimensional nonlinear optimal control problems on time scales

In this article we derive a strong version of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle for general nonlinear optimal control problems on time scales in finite dimension. The final time can be fixed or not, and in the case of general boundary conditions we derive the corresponding transversality conditions. Our proof is based on Ekeland's variational principle. Our statement and comments clearly show the distinction between right-dense points and right-scattered points. At right-dense points a maximization condition of the Hamiltonian is derived, similarly to the continuous-time case. At right-scattered points a weaker condition is derived, in terms of so-called stable $Ω$-dense directions. We do not make any specific restrictive assumption on the dynamics or on the set $Ω$ of control constraints. Our statement encompasses the classical continuous-time and discrete-time versions of the Pontryagin Maximum Principle, and holds on any general time scale, that is any closed subset of $\R$.

General Cauchy-Lipschitz theory for shifted and non shifted Delta-Cauchy problems on time scales

This article is devoted to completing some aspects of the classical Cauchy-Lipschitz (or Picard-Lindelöf) theory for general nonlinear systems posed on time scales, that are closed subsets of the set of real numbers. Partial results do exist but do not cover the framework of general dynamics on time-scales encountered e.g. in applications to control theory. In the present work, we first introduce the notion of absolutely continuous solution for shifted and non shifted Delta-Cauchy problems, and then the notion of a maximal solution. We state and prove a Cauchy-Lipschitz theorem, providing existence and uniqueness of the maximal solution of a given Delta-Cauchy problem under suitable assumptions like regressivity and local Lipschitz continuity, and discuss some related issues like the behavior of maximal solutions at terminal points.

Variational integrator for fractional Pontryagin's systems. Existence of a discrete fractional Noether's theorem

Fractional Pontryagin's systems emerge in the study of a class of fractional optimal control problems but they are not resolvable in most cases. In this paper, we suggest a numerical approach for these fractional systems. Precisely, we construct a variational integrator allowing to preserve at the discrete level their intrinsic variational structure. The variational integrator obtained is then called shifted discrete fractional Pontryagin's system. We provide a solved fractional example in a certain sense. It allows us to test in this paper the convergence of the variational integrator constructed. Finally, we also provide a discrete fractional Noether's theorem giving the existence of an explicit computable discrete constant of motion for shifted discrete fractional Pontryagin's systems admitting a discrete symmetry.

A class of fractional optimal control problems and fractional Pontryagin's systems. Existence of a fractional Noether's theorem

In this paper, we study a class of fractional optimal control problems. A necessary condition for the existence of an optimal control is provided in the literature. It is commonly given as the existence of a solution of a fractional Pontryagin's system and the proof is based on the introduction of a Lagrange multiplier. Assuming an additional condition on these problems, we suggest a new presentation of this result with a proof using only classical mathematical tools adapted to the fractional case: calculus of variations, Gronwall's Lemma, Cauchy-Lipschitz Theorem and stability under perturbations of differential equations. In this paper, we furthermore provide a way in order to transit from a classical optimal control problem to its fractional version via the Stanislavsky's formalism. We also solve a strict fractional example allowing to test numerical schemes. Finally, we state a fractional Noether's theorem giving the existence of an explicit constant of motion for fractional Pontryagin's systems admitting a symmetry.
