Textual Analysis of Communications in COVID-19 Infected Community on Social Media

During the COVID-19 pandemic, people started to discuss about pandemic-related topics on social media. On subreddit \textit{r/COVID19positive}, a number of topics are discussed or being shared, including experience of those who got a positive test result, stories of those who presumably got infected, and questions asked regarding the pandemic and the disease. In this study, we try to understand, from a linguistic perspective, the nature of discussions on the subreddit. We found differences in linguistic characteristics (e.g. psychological, emotional and reasoning) across three different categories of topics. We also classified posts into the different categories using SOTA pre-trained language models. Such classification model can be used for pandemic-related research on social media.

Conditional Training with Bounding Map for Universal Lesion Detection

Universal Lesion Detection (ULD) in computed tomography plays an essential role in computer-aided diagnosis. Promising ULD results have been reported by coarse-to-fine two-stage detection approaches, but such two-stage ULD methods still suffer from issues like imbalance of positive v.s. negative anchors during object proposal and insufficient supervision problem during localization regression and classification of the region of interest (RoI) proposals. While leveraging pseudo segmentation masks such as bounding map (BM) can reduce the above issues to some degree, it is still an open problem to effectively handle the diverse lesion shapes and sizes in ULD. In this paper, we propose a BM-based conditional training for two-stage ULD, which can (i) reduce positive vs. negative anchor imbalance via BM-based conditioning (BMC) mechanism for anchor sampling instead of traditional IoU-based rule; and (ii) adaptively compute size-adaptive BM (ABM) from lesion bounding box, which is used for improving lesion localization accuracy via ABMsupervised segmentation. Experiments with four state-of-the-art methods show that the proposed approach can bring an almost free detection accuracy improvement without requiring expensive lesion mask annotations.

CANet: Context Aware Network for 3D Brain Glioma Segmentation

Automated segmentation of brain glioma plays an active role in diagnosis decision, progression monitoring and surgery planning. Based on deep neural networks, previous studies have shown promising technologies for brain glioma segmentation. However, these approaches lack powerful strategies to incorporate contextual information of tumor cells and their surrounding, which has been proven as a fundamental cue to deal with local ambiguity. In this work, we propose a novel approach named Context-Aware Network (CANet) for brain glioma segmentation. CANet captures high dimensional and discriminative features with contexts from both the convolutional space and feature interaction graphs. We further propose context guided attentive conditional random fields which can selectively aggregate features. We evaluate our method using publicly accessible brain glioma segmentation datasets BRATS2017, BRATS2018 and BRATS2019. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has better or competitive performance against several State-of-The-Art approaches under different segmentation metrics on the training and validation sets.

Human-like Controllable Image Captioning with Verb-specific Semantic Roles

Controllable Image Captioning (CIC) -- generating image descriptions following designated control signals -- has received unprecedented attention over the last few years. To emulate the human ability in controlling caption generation, current CIC studies focus exclusively on control signals concerning objective properties, such as contents of interest or descriptive patterns. However, we argue that almost all existing objective control signals have overlooked two indispensable characteristics of an ideal control signal: 1) Event-compatible: all visual contents referred to in a single sentence should be compatible with the described activity. 2) Sample-suitable: the control signals should be suitable for a specific image sample. To this end, we propose a new control signal for CIC: Verb-specific Semantic Roles (VSR). VSR consists of a verb and some semantic roles, which represents a targeted activity and the roles of entities involved in this activity. Given a designated VSR, we first train a grounded semantic role labeling (GSRL) model to identify and ground all entities for each role. Then, we propose a semantic structure planner (SSP) to learn human-like descriptive semantic structures. Lastly, we use a role-shift captioning model to generate the captions. Extensive experiments and ablations demonstrate that our framework can achieve better controllability than several strong baselines on two challenging CIC benchmarks. Besides, we can generate multi-level diverse captions easily. The code is available at: https://github.com/mad-red/VSR-guided-CIC.

$ZH$ production in gluon fusion: two-loop amplitudes with full top quark mass dependence

We present results for the two-loop helicity amplitudes entering the NLO QCD corrections to the production of a Higgs boson in association with a $Z$-boson in gluon fusion. The two-loop integrals, involving massive top quarks, are calculated numerically. Results for the interference of the finite part of the two-loop amplitudes with the Born amplitude are shown as a function of the two kinematic invariants on which the amplitudes depend.

Ref-NMS: Breaking Proposal Bottlenecks in Two-Stage Referring Expression Grounding

The prevailing framework for solving referring expression grounding is based on a two-stage process: 1) detecting proposals with an object detector and 2) grounding the referent to one of the proposals. Existing two-stage solutions mostly focus on the grounding step, which aims to align the expressions with the proposals. In this paper, we argue that these methods overlook an obvious mismatch between the roles of proposals in the two stages: they generate proposals solely based on the detection confidence (i.e., expression-agnostic), hoping that the proposals contain all right instances in the expression (i.e., expression-aware). Due to this mismatch, current two-stage methods suffer from a severe performance drop between detected and ground-truth proposals. To this end, we propose Ref-NMS, which is the first method to yield expression-aware proposals at the first stage. Ref-NMS regards all nouns in the expression as critical objects, and introduces a lightweight module to predict a score for aligning each box with a critical object. These scores can guide the NMS operation to filter out the boxes irrelevant to the expression, increasing the recall of critical objects, resulting in a significantly improved grounding performance. Since Ref- NMS is agnostic to the grounding step, it can be easily integrated into any state-of-the-art two-stage method. Extensive ablation studies on several backbones, benchmarks, and tasks consistently demonstrate the superiority of Ref-NMS. Codes are available at: https://github.com/ChopinSharp/ref-nms.

Finite elements for divdiv-conforming symmetric tensors in three dimensions

Two types of finite element spaces on a tetrahedron are constructed for divdiv conforming symmetric tensors in three dimensions. The key tools of the construction are the decomposition of polynomial tensor spaces and the characterization of the trace operators. First, the divdiv Hilbert complex and its corresponding polynomial complexes are presented. Several decompositions of polynomial vector and tensors spaces are derived from the polynomial complexes. Then, traces for div-div operator are characterized through a Green's identity. Besides the normal-normal component, another trace involving combination of first order derivatives of the tensor is continuous across the face. Due to the smoothness of polynomials, the symmetric tensor element is also continuous at vertices, and on the plane orthogonal to each edge. Third, a finite element for sym curl-conforming trace-free tensors is constructed following the same approach. Finally, a finite element divdiv complex, as well as the bubble functions complex, in three dimensions are established.

Direct numerical simulation of quasi-two-dimensional MHD turbulent shear flows

Direct numerical simulations (DNS) are performed to study the turbulent shear flow of an electrically conducting fluid in a cylindrical container. The flow is driven by the interaction between the radial electric currents ($I$) injected through a large number of small electrodes at the bottom wall and an axial magnetic field. All the numerical parameters, including the geometry of the container, the total injcected currents and the magnetic field, are in line with the experiment performed in J. Fluid Mech. 456, 137-159. First, witth laminar Hartmann layers, three dimensional simulations recover experimentally measured quantities (global angular momentum, velocity profiles). The variation laws for the wall shear stresses, the energy spectra and visualizations of flow structures near the side wall highlight separation and turbulence within the side wall layers. Furthermore, a parametric analysis of the flow reveals that Ekman recirculations have significant influence on the vortex size, the free shear layer, and the global dissipation. Second, we recover the scaling laws of the cutoff scale that separate the large quasi-two-dimensional scales from the small three-dimensional ones (J. Fluid Mech. 118, 507-518), and thus establish their validity in sheared MHD turbulence. Furthermore, we find that three-componentality are and the three-dimensionality appear concurrently and that both the two-dimensional cutoff frequency and the mean energy associated to the axial component of velocity scale with $N_t$, respectively as $0.063N_t^{0.37}$ and $0.126 N_t^{-0.92}$.

Finite elements for divdiv-conforming symmetric tensors

Two types of finite element spaces on triangles are constructed for div-div conforming symmetric tensors. Besides the normal-normal continuity, the stress tensor is continuous at vertices and another trace involving combination of derivatives of stress is identified. Polynomial complex, finite element complex, and Hilbert complex are presented and a commuting diagram between them is given. The constructed div-div conforming elements are exploited to discretize the mixed formulation of the biharmonic equation. Optimal order and superconvergence error analysis is provided. By rotation, finite elements for rot-rot conforming symmetric strain are also obtained.

Class balanced underwater object detection dataset generated by class-wise style augmentation

Underwater object detection technique is of great significance for various applications in underwater the scenes. However, class imbalance issue is still an unsolved bottleneck for current underwater object detection algorithms. It leads to large precision discrepancies among different classes that the dominant classes with more training data achieve higher detection precisions while the minority classes with fewer training data achieves much lower detection precisions. In this paper, we propose a novel class-wise style augmentation (CWSA) algorithm to generate a class-balanced underwater dataset Balance18 from the public contest underwater dataset URPC2018. CWSA is a new kind of data augmentation technique which augments the training data for the minority classes by generating various colors, textures and contrasts for the minority classes. Compare with previous data augmentation algorithms such flipping, cropping and rotations, CWSA is able to generate a class balanced underwater dataset with diverse color distortions and haze-effects.

Multi-View Adaptive Fusion Network for 3D Object Detection

3D object detection based on LiDAR-camera fusion is becoming an emerging research theme for autonomous driving. However, it has been surprisingly difficult to effectively fuse both modalities without information loss and interference. To solve this issue, we propose a single-stage multi-view fusion framework that takes LiDAR bird's-eye view, LiDAR range view and camera view images as inputs for 3D object detection. To effectively fuse multi-view features, we propose an attentive pointwise fusion (APF) module to estimate the importance of the three sources with attention mechanisms that can achieve adaptive fusion of multi-view features in a pointwise manner. Furthermore, an attentive pointwise weighting (APW) module is designed to help the network learn structure information and point feature importance with two extra tasks, namely, foreground classification and center regression, and the predicted foreground probability is used to reweight the point features. We design an end-to-end learnable network named MVAF-Net to integrate these two components. Our evaluations conducted on the KITTI 3D object detection datasets demonstrate that the proposed APF and APW modules offer significant performance gains. Moreover, the proposed MVAF-Net achieves the best performance among all single-stage fusion methods and outperforms most two-stage fusion methods, achieving the best trade-off between speed and accuracy on the KITTI benchmark.

One Thousand and One Hours: Self-driving Motion Prediction Dataset

Motivated by the impact of large-scale datasets on ML systems we present the largest self-driving dataset for motion prediction to date, containing over 1,000 hours of data. This was collected by a fleet of 20 autonomous vehicles along a fixed route in Palo Alto, California, over a four-month period. It consists of 170,000 scenes, where each scene is 25 seconds long and captures the perception output of the self-driving system, which encodes the precise positions and motions of nearby vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians over time. On top of this, the dataset contains a high-definition semantic map with 15,242 labelled elements and a high-definition aerial view over the area. We show that using a dataset of this size dramatically improves performance for key self-driving problems. Combined with the provided software kit, this collection forms the largest and most detailed dataset to date for the development of self-driving machine learning tasks, such as motion forecasting, motion planning and simulation. The full dataset is available at http://level5.lyft.com/.

Lightweight Single-Image Super-Resolution Network with Attentive Auxiliary Feature Learning

Despite convolutional network-based methods have boosted the performance of single image super-resolution (SISR), the huge computation costs restrict their practical applicability. In this paper, we develop a computation efficient yet accurate network based on the proposed attentive auxiliary features (A$^2$F) for SISR. Firstly, to explore the features from the bottom layers, the auxiliary feature from all the previous layers are projected into a common space. Then, to better utilize these projected auxiliary features and filter the redundant information, the channel attention is employed to select the most important common feature based on current layer feature. We incorporate these two modules into a block and implement it with a lightweight network. Experimental results on large-scale dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model against the state-of-the-art (SOTA) SR methods. Notably, when parameters are less than 320k, A$^2$F outperforms SOTA methods for all scales, which proves its ability to better utilize the auxiliary features. Codes are available at https://github.com/wxxxxxxh/A2F-SR.

Photon pair production in gluon fusion: Top quark effects at NLO with threshold matching

We present a calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the loop-induced production of a photon pair through gluon fusion, including massive top quarks at two loops, where the two-loop integrals are calculated numerically. Matching the fixed-order NLO results to a threshold expansion, we obtain accurate results around the top quark pair production threshold. We analyse how the top quark threshold corrections affect distributions of the photon pair invariant mass and comment on the possibility of determining the top quark mass from precision measurements of the diphoton invariant mass spectrum.

Perceptual underwater image enhancement with deep learning and physical priors

Underwater image enhancement, as a pre-processing step to improve the accuracy of the following object detection task, has drawn considerable attention in the field of underwater navigation and ocean exploration. However, most of the existing underwater image enhancement strategies tend to consider enhancement and detection as two independent modules with no interaction, and the practice of separate optimization does not always help the underwater object detection task. In this paper, we propose two perceptual enhancement models, each of which uses a deep enhancement model with a detection perceptor. The detection perceptor provides coherent information in the form of gradients to the enhancement model, guiding the enhancement model to generate patch level visually pleasing images or detection favourable images. In addition, due to the lack of training data, a hybrid underwater image synthesis model, which fuses physical priors and data-driven cues, is proposed to synthesize training data and generalise our enhancement model for real-world underwater images. Experimental results show the superiority of our proposed method over several state-of-the-art methods on both real-world and synthetic underwater datasets.

In the Eyes of the Beholder: Analyzing Social Media Use of Neutral and Controversial Terms for COVID-19

During the COVID-19 pandemic, "Chinese Virus" emerged as a controversial term for coronavirus. To some, it may seem like a neutral term referring to the physical origin of the virus. To many others, however, the term is in fact attaching ethnicity to the virus. While both arguments appear reasonable, quantitative analysis of the term's real-world usage is lacking to shed light on the issues behind the controversy. In this paper, we attempt to fill this gap. To model the substantive difference of tweets with controversial terms and those with non-controversial terms, we apply topic modeling and LIWC-based sentiment analysis. To test whether "Chinese Virus" and "COVID-19" are interchangeable, we formulate it as a classification task, mask out these terms, and classify them using the state-of-the-art transformer models. Our experiments consistently show that the term "Chinese Virus" is associated with different substantive topics and sentiment compared with "COVID-19" and that the two terms are easily distinguishable by looking at their context.

Deep Learning for Image and Point Cloud Fusion in Autonomous Driving: A Review

Autonomous vehicles were experiencing rapid development in the past few years. However, achieving full autonomy is not a trivial task, due to the nature of the complex and dynamic driving environment. Therefore, autonomous vehicles are equipped with a suite of different sensors to ensure robust, accurate environmental perception. In particular, the camera-LiDAR fusion is becoming an emerging research theme. However, so far there has been no critical review that focuses on deep-learning-based camera-LiDAR fusion methods. To bridge this gap and motivate future research, this paper devotes to review recent deep-learning-based data fusion approaches that leverage both image and point cloud. This review gives a brief overview of deep learning on image and point cloud data processing. Followed by in-depth reviews of camera-LiDAR fusion methods in depth completion, object detection, semantic segmentation, tracking and online cross-sensor calibration, which are organized based on their respective fusion levels. Furthermore, we compare these methods on publicly available datasets. Finally, we identified gaps and over-looked challenges between current academic researches and real-world applications. Based on these observations, we provide our insights and point out promising research directions.
