MixNet: Multi-modality Mix Network for Brain Segmentation

Automated brain structure segmentation is important to many clinical quantitative analysis and diagnoses. In this work, we introduce MixNet, a 2D semantic-wise deep convolutional neural network to segment brain structure in multi-modality MRI images. The network is composed of our modified deep residual learning units. In the unit, we replace the traditional convolution layer with the dilated convolutional layer, which avoids the use of pooling layers and deconvolutional layers, reducing the number of network parameters. Final predictions are made by aggregating information from multiple scales and modalities. A pyramid pooling module is used to capture spatial information of the anatomical structures at the output end. In addition, we test three architectures (MixNetv1, MixNetv2 and MixNetv3) which fuse the modalities differently to see the effect on the results. Our network achieves the state-of-the-art performance. MixNetv2 was submitted to the MRBrainS challenge at MICCAI 2018 and won the 3rd place in the 3-label task. On the MRBrainS2018 dataset, which includes subjects with a variety of pathologies, the overall DSC (Dice Coefficient) of 84.7% (gray matter), 87.3% (white matter) and 83.4% (cerebrospinal fluid) were obtained with only 7 subjects as training data.

Multi-Task Learning via Co-Attentive Sharing for Pedestrian Attribute Recognition

Learning to predict multiple attributes of a pedestrian is a multi-task learning problem. To share feature representation between two individual task networks, conventional methods like Cross-Stitch and Sluice network learn a linear combination of features or feature subspaces. However, linear combination rules out the complex interdependency between channels. Moreover, spatial information exchanging is less-considered. In this paper, we propose a novel Co-Attentive Sharing (CAS) module which extracts discriminative channels and spatial regions for more effective feature sharing in multi-task learning. The module consists of three branches, which leverage different channels for between-task feature fusing, attention generation and task-specific feature enhancing, respectively. Experiments on two pedestrian attribute recognition datasets show that our module outperforms the conventional sharing units and achieves superior results compared to the state-of-the-art approaches using many metrics.

Location-Enabled IoT (LE-IoT): A Survey of Positioning Techniques, Error Sources, and Mitigation

The Internet of Things (IoT) has started to empower the future of many industrial and mass-market applications. Localization techniques are becoming key to add location context to IoT data without human perception and intervention. Meanwhile, the newly-emerged Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) technologies have advantages such as long-range, low power consumption, low cost, massive connections, and the capability for communication in both indoor and outdoor areas. These features make LPWAN signals strong candidates for mass-market localization applications. However, there are various error sources that have limited localization performance by using such IoT signals. This paper reviews the IoT localization system through the following sequence: IoT localization system review -- localization data sources -- localization algorithms -- localization error sources and mitigation -- localization performance evaluation. Compared to the related surveys, this paper has a more comprehensive and state-of-the-art review on IoT localization methods, an original review on IoT localization error sources and mitigation, an original review on IoT localization performance evaluation, and a more comprehensive review of IoT localization applications, opportunities, and challenges. Thus, this survey provides comprehensive guidance for peers who are interested in enabling localization ability in the existing IoT systems, using IoT systems for localization, or integrating IoT signals with the existing localization sensors.

Counterfactual Samples Synthesizing for Robust Visual Question Answering

Despite Visual Question Answering (VQA) has realized impressive progress over the last few years, today's VQA models tend to capture superficial linguistic correlations in the train set and fail to generalize to the test set with different QA distributions. To reduce the language biases, several recent works introduce an auxiliary question-only model to regularize the training of targeted VQA model, and achieve dominating performance on VQA-CP. However, since the complexity of design, current methods are unable to equip the ensemble-based models with two indispensable characteristics of an ideal VQA model: 1) visual-explainable: the model should rely on the right visual regions when making decisions. 2) question-sensitive: the model should be sensitive to the linguistic variations in question. To this end, we propose a model-agnostic Counterfactual Samples Synthesizing (CSS) training scheme. The CSS generates numerous counterfactual training samples by masking critical objects in images or words in questions, and assigning different ground-truth answers. After training with the complementary samples (ie, the original and generated samples), the VQA models are forced to focus on all critical objects and words, which significantly improves both visual-explainable and question-sensitive abilities. In return, the performance of these models is further boosted. Extensive ablations have shown the effectiveness of CSS. Particularly, by building on top of the model LMH, we achieve a record-breaking performance of 58.95% on VQA-CP v2, with 6.5% gains.

A gradient descent akin method for inequality constrained optimization

We propose a first-order method for solving inequality constrained optimization problems. The method is derived from our previous work [12], a modified search direction method (MSDM) that applies the singular-value decomposition of normalized gradients. In this work, we simplify its computational framework to a "gradient descent akin" method, i.e., the search direction is computed using a linear combination of the negative and normalized objective and constraint gradient. The main focus of this work is to provide a mathematical aspect to the method. We analyze the global behavior and convergence of the method using a dynamical systems approach. We then prove that the resulting trajectories find local solutions by asymptotically converging to the central path(s) for the logarithmic barrier interior-point method under the so-called relative convex condition. Numerical examples are reported, which include both common test examples and applications in shape optimization.

Miscibility gap and possible intrinsic Griffiths phase in Sr(Fe1-xMnx)2As2 crystals grown by transitional metal arsenide flux

The crystal structure, magnetic, electronic, and thermal properties of Mn-doped SrFe2As2 crystals have been systematically investigated. A miscibility gap is found in the system from x = 0.4362(4) to x = 0.9612(9). For x < 0.2055(2), the single crystals holding tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm (no. 139)) have a continuously enlarged lattice parameter c, followed by a phase separation with crystals holding both tetragonal and trigonal structures up to x = 0.4362(4). Beyond the miscibility gap, the crystals with x > 0.9612(9) hold the trigonal structure (space group P-3m1 (no. 164)). Moreover, the spin density wave ordering for x = 0 to x = 0.0973(1) is suppressed, followed by an abnormal and broadened increase of the ordering temperature for x = 0.0973(1) to x = 0.2055(2). Eliminating the possibility of real-space phase separation of Mn and Fe based on the results of X-ray diffraction, this novel phenomenon can be attributed to a possible intrinsic Griffiths phase. No any superconducting signals are observed down to 2 K in the whole composition range with 0 < x < 1. A phase diagram with multi-critical points of Mn-doped SrFe2As2 system is established accordingly.

Polarised Amplitudes and Soft-Virtual Cross Sections for $b\bar b \rightarrow ZH$ at NNLO in QCD

Production of the Higgs boson, $H$ in association with a massive vector boson, $V$, i.e., the $VH$ process, plays an important role in the explorations of Higgs physics at the Large Hadron Collider, both for a precise study of Higgs' Standard Model couplings and for probing New Physics. In this publication we present the two-loop corrections in massless quantum chromodynamics (QCD) to the amplitude of the Higgs production associated with a $Z$ boson via the bottom quark-antiquark annihilation channel with a non-vanishing bottom-quark Yukawa coupling, which is a necessary ingredient of the full next-to-next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to the $VH$ process in the five-flavour scheme. The computation is performed by projecting the D-dimensional scattering amplitude directly onto an appropriate set of Lorentz structures related to the linear polarisation states of the $Z$ boson. We provide analytic expressions of the complete set of renormalised polarised amplitudes in terms of polylogarithms of maximum weight four. To give an estimation of the size of contributions from amplitudes considered in this work, we compute numerically the resulting cross sections under the soft-virtual approximation. We also take the opportunity to make a dedicated discussion regarding an interesting subtlety appearing in the conventional form factor decomposition of amplitudes involving axial currents regularised in D dimensions.

The nature of mean-field generation in three classes of optimal dynamos

In recent years, several optimal dynamos have been discovered. They minimize the magnetic energy dissipation or, equivalently, maximize the growth rate at a fixed magnetic Reynolds number. In the optimal dynamo of Willis (2012, Phys. Rev. Lett. 109, 251101), we find mean-field dynamo action for planar averages. One component of the magnetic field grows exponentially while the other decays in an oscillatory fashion near onset. This behavior is different from that of an alpha^2 dynamo, where the two non-vanishing components of the planar averages are coupled and have the same growth rate. For the Willis dynamo, we find that the mean field is excited by a negative turbulent magnetic diffusivity, which has a non-uniform spatial profile near onset. The temporal oscillations in the decaying component are caused by the corresponding component of the diffusivity tensor being complex when the mean field is decaying and, in this way, time-dependent. The growing mean field can be modeled by a negative magnetic diffusivity combined with a positive magnetic hyperdiffusivity. In two other classes of optimal dynamos of Chen et al. (2015, J. Fluid Mech. 783, 23), we find, to some extent, similar mean-field dynamo actions. When the magnetic boundary conditions are mixed, the two components of the planar averaged field grow at different rates when the dynamo is 15% supercritical. When the mean magnetic field satisfies homogeneous boundary conditions (where the magnetic field is tangential to the boundary), mean-field dynamo action is found for one-dimensional averages, but not for planar averages. Despite having different spatial profiles, both dynamos show negative turbulent magnetic diffusivities. Our finding suggests negative turbulent magnetic diffusivities may support a broader class of dynamos than previously thought, including these three optimal dynamos.

First order optimization methods based on Hessian-driven Nesterov accelerated gradient flow

A novel dynamical inertial Newton system, which is called Hessian-driven Nesterov accelerated gradient (H-NAG) flow is proposed. Convergence of the continuous trajectory are established via tailored Lyapunov function, and new first-order accelerated optimization methods are proposed from ODE solvers. It is shown that (semi-)implicit schemes can always achieve linear rate and explicit schemes have the optimal(accelerated) rates for convex and strongly convex objectives. In particular, Nesterov's optimal method is recovered from an explicit scheme for our H-NAG flow. Furthermore, accelerated splitting algorithms for composite optimization problems are also developed.

Two-Loop QCD Helicity Amplitudes for Higgs Production Associated with a Vector Boson through Bottom Quark Annihilation

We present the two-loop QCD corrections to the amplitude of the Higgs production associated with a $Z$ boson via the bottom quark-antiquark annihilation channel with a non-vanishing bottom-quark Yukawa coupling. The computation is performed by projecting the D-dimensional scattering amplitude directly onto a set of Lorentz structures related to the linear polarisation states of the $Z$ boson. We cross-check the finite remainders through a computation based on conventional form factor decomposition. We show that for physical observables, an ultimate D-dimensional form factor decomposition of amplitudes is not necessary which has a huge potential to simplify a multiloop computation. We compute numerically the resulting cross sections under the soft-virtual approximation to NNLO and find it three orders of magnitude smaller than that of the s-channel.

Photon pair production in gluon fusion: Top quark effects around threshold

We present a calculation of the NLO QCD corrections to the loop-induced production of a photon pair through gluon fusion, including massive top quarks at two loops. The two-loop virtual amplitudes are computed via projecting onto a set of Lorentz structures related to linear polarisation states of external gauge bosons. All two-loop master integrals dependent on the top quark mass are evaluated numerically. Matching the fixed order NLO result to a calculation with threshold resummation, we obtain an accurate description of the diphoton invariant mass spectrum around the threshold of top quark pair production. We analyse how the distribution of the diphoton invariant mass is affected by the top quark loop-induced corrections, especially around the top quark pair production threshold.

Convergence Analysis of the Fast Subspace Descent Methods for Convex Optimization Problems

The full approximation storage (FAS) scheme is a widely used multigrid method for nonlinear problems. In this paper, a new framework to design and analyze FAS-like schemes for convex optimization problems is developed. The new method, the Fast Subspace Descent (FASD) scheme, which generalizes classical FAS, can be recast as an inexact version of nonlinear multigrid methods based on space decomposition and subspace correction. The local problem in each subspace can be simplified to be linear and one gradient descent iteration (with an appropriate step size) is enough to ensure a global linear (geometric) convergence of FASD.

Improved Deep Hashing with Soft Pairwise Similarity for Multi-label Image Retrieval

Hash coding has been widely used in the approximate nearest neighbor search for large-scale image retrieval. Recently, many deep hashing methods have been proposed and shown largely improved performance over traditional feature-learning-based methods. Most of these methods examine the pairwise similarity on the semantic-level labels, where the pairwise similarity is generally defined in a hard-assignment way. That is, the pairwise similarity is '1' if they share no less than one class label and '0' if they do not share any. However, such similarity definition cannot reflect the similarity ranking for pairwise images that hold multiple labels. In this paper, a new deep hashing method is proposed for multi-label image retrieval by re-defining the pairwise similarity into an instance similarity, where the instance similarity is quantified into a percentage based on the normalized semantic labels. Based on the instance similarity, a weighted cross-entropy loss and a minimum mean square error loss are tailored for loss-function construction, and are efficiently used for simultaneous feature learning and hash coding. Experiments on three popular datasets demonstrate that, the proposed method outperforms the competing methods and achieves the state-of-the-art performance in multi-label image retrieval.

Nonconforming Virtual Element Method for $2m$-th Order Partial Differential Equations in $\mathbb R^n$

A unified construction of the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual elements of any order $k$ is developed on any shape of polytope in $\mathbb R^n$ with constraints $m\leq n$ and $k\geq m$. As a vital tool in the construction, a generalized Green's identity for $H^m$ inner product is derived. The $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods are then used to approximate solutions of the $m$-harmonic equation. After establishing a bound on the jump related to the weak continuity, the optimal error estimate of the canonical interpolation, and the norm equivalence of the stabilization term, the optimal error estimates are derived for the $H^m$-nonconforming virtual element methods.

Learning Lightweight Pedestrian Detector with Hierarchical Knowledge Distillation

It remains very challenging to build a pedestrian detection system for real world applications, which demand for both accuracy and speed. This work presents a novel hierarchical knowledge distillation framework to learn a lightweight pedestrian detector, which significantly reduces the computational cost and still holds the high accuracy at the same time. Following the `teacher--student' diagram that a stronger, deeper neural network can teach a lightweight network to learn better representations, we explore multiple knowledge distillation architectures and reframe this approach as a unified, hierarchical distillation framework. In particular, the proposed distillation is performed at multiple hierarchies, multiple stages in a modern detector, which empowers the student detector to learn both low-level details and high-level abstractions simultaneously. Experiment result shows that a student model trained by our framework, with 6 times compression in number of parameters, still achieves competitive performance as the teacher model on the widely used pedestrian detection benchmark.

Counterfactual Critic Multi-Agent Training for Scene Graph Generation

Scene graphs -- objects as nodes and visual relationships as edges -- describe the whereabouts and interactions of the things and stuff in an image for comprehensive scene understanding. To generate coherent scene graphs, almost all existing methods exploit the fruitful visual context by modeling message passing among objects, fitting the dynamic nature of reasoning with visual context, eg, "person" on "bike" can help to determine the relationship "ride", which in turn contributes to the category confidence of the two objects. However, we argue that the scene dynamics is not properly learned by using the prevailing cross-entropy based supervised learning paradigm, which is not sensitive to graph inconsistency: errors at the hub or non-hub nodes are unfortunately penalized equally. To this end, we propose a Counterfactual critic Multi-Agent Training (CMAT) approach to resolve the mismatch. CMAT is a multi-agent policy gradient method that frames objects as cooperative agents, and then directly maximizes a graph-level metric as the reward. In particular, to assign the reward properly to each agent, CMAT uses a counterfactual baseline that disentangles the agent-specific reward by fixing the dynamics of other agents. Extensive validations on the challenging Visual Genome benchmark show that CMAT achieves a state-of-the-art by significant performance gains under various settings and metrics.

Monocular Outdoor Semantic Mapping with a Multi-task Network

In many robotic applications, especially for the autonomous driving, understanding the semantic information and the geometric structure of surroundings are both essential. Semantic 3D maps, as a carrier of the environmental knowledge, are then intensively studied for their abilities and applications. However, it is still challenging to produce a dense outdoor semantic map from a monocular image stream. Motivated by this target, in this paper, we propose a method for large-scale 3D reconstruction from consecutive monocular images. First, with the correlation of underlying information between depth and semantic prediction, a novel multi-task Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) is designed for joint prediction. Given a single image, the network learns low-level information with a shared encoder and separately predicts with decoders containing additional Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (ASPP) layers and the residual connection which merits disparities and semantic mutually. To overcome the inconsistency of monocular depth prediction for reconstruction, post-processing steps with the superpixelization and the effective 3D representation approach are obtained to give the final semantic map. Experiments are compared with other methods on both semantic labeling and depth prediction. We also qualitatively demonstrate the map reconstructed from large-scale, difficult monocular image sequences to prove the effectiveness and superiority.

Exploiting Entity BIO Tag Embeddings and Multi-task Learning for Relation Extraction with Imbalanced Data

In practical scenario, relation extraction needs to first identify entity pairs that have relation and then assign a correct relation class. However, the number of non-relation entity pairs in context (negative instances) usually far exceeds the others (positive instances), which negatively affects a model's performance. To mitigate this problem, we propose a multi-task architecture which jointly trains a model to perform relation identification with cross-entropy loss and relation classification with ranking loss. Meanwhile, we observe that a sentence may have multiple entities and relation mentions, and the patterns in which the entities appear in a sentence may contain useful semantic information that can be utilized to distinguish between positive and negative instances. Thus we further incorporate the embeddings of character-wise/word-wise BIO tag from the named entity recognition task into character/word embeddings to enrich the input representation. Experiment results show that our proposed approach can significantly improve the performance of a baseline model with more than 10% absolute increase in F1-score, and outperform the state-of-the-art models on ACE 2005 Chinese and English corpus. Moreover, BIO tag embeddings are particularly effective and can be used to improve other models as well.
