Direct Observation of Layer-Dependent Electronic Structure in Phosphorene

Phosphorene, a single atomic layer of black phosphorus, has recently emerged as a new twodimensional (2D) material that holds promise for electronic and photonic technology. Here we experimentally demonstrate that the electronic structure of few-layer phosphorene varies significantly with the number of layers, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The interband optical transitions cover a wide, technologically important spectrum range from visible to mid-infrared. In addition, we observe strong photoluminescence in few-layer phosphorene at energies that match well with the absorption edge, indicating they are direct bandgap semiconductors. The strongly layer-dependent electronic structure of phosphorene, in combination with its high electrical mobility, gives it distinct advantages over other twodimensional materials in electronic and opto-electronic applications.

Loop quantum cosmology: The horizon problem and the probability of inflation

Anomaly-free perturbations of loop quantum cosmology reveal a deformed space-time structure, in which the signature changes when the energy density is $ρ=ρ_c/2$. Furthermore, in loop quantum cosmology, one can obtain an effective causal structure only for a low density region ($ρ\leqρ_c/2$), which gives a natural initial condition to consider the horizon problem. Choosing the initial value at $ρ(0)=ρ_c/2$ in this paper, we investigate the horizon problem and the probability of inflation in the framework of loop quantum cosmology. Two models are considered: the quadratic inflation and the natural inflation. We use the Liouville measure to calculate the probability of inflation which solves the horizon problem, and find that, for the quadratic inflation model, the probability is very close to unity, while for the natural inflation model, the probability is about $35\$.

Nuclear dependences of azimuthal asymmetries in the Drell-Yan process

We study nuclear dependences of azimuthal asymmetries in the Drell-Yan lepton pair production in nucleon-nucleus collisions with polarized nucleons. We use the "maximal two-gluon correlation approximation", so that we can relate the transverse momentum dependent quark distribution in a nucleus to that in a nucleon by a convolution with a Gaussian broadening. We use the Gaussian ansatz for the transverse momentum dependence of such quark distribution functions, and obtain the numerical results for the nuclear dependences. These results show that the averaged azimuthal asymmetries are suppressed.

Queueing Analysis for Preemptive Transmission in Underlay Cognitive Radio Networks

In many cognitive radio applications, there are multiple types of message queues. Existing queueing analysis works in underlay CR networks failed to discuss packets heterogeneity. Therefore high priority packets with impatient waiting time that have preemptive transmission opportunities over low class are investigated. We model the system behavior as a M/M/1+GI queue which is represented by a two dimensional state transition graph. The reneging probability of high priority packets and the average waiting time in two-class priority queues is analyzed. Simulation results demonstrate that the average waiting time of high priority packets decreases with the growing interference power threshold and the average waiting time of the low priority packet is proportional to the arrival rate of the high priority packet. This work may lay the foundation to design efficient MAC protocols and optimize long term system performance by carefully choosing system parameters.

A PDE approach to fractional diffusion: a posteriori error analysis

We derive a computable a posteriori error estimator for the $α$-harmonic extension problem, which localizes the fractional powers of elliptic operators supplemented with Dirichlet boundary conditions. Our a posteriori error estimator relies on the solution of small discrete problems on anisotropic cylindrical stars. It exhibits built-in flux equilibration and is equivalent to the energy error up to data oscillation, under suitable assumptions. We design a simple adaptive algorithm and present numerical experiments which reveal a competitive performance.

An auxiliary space multigrid preconditioner for the weak Galerkin method

In this paper, the authors constructed an auxiliary space multigrid preconditioner for the weak Galerkin finite element method for second-order diffusion equations, discretized on simplicial 2D or 3D meshes. The idea of the auxiliary space multigrid preconditioner is to use an auxiliary space as a "coarse" space in the multigrid algorithm, where the discrete problem in the auxiliary space can be easily solved by an existing solver. In this construction, the authors conveniently use the $H^1$ conforming piecewise linear finite element space as an auxiliary space. The main technical difficulty is to build the connection between the weak Galerkin discrete space and the $H^1$ conforming piecewise linear finite element space. The authors successfully constructed such an auxiliary space multigrid preconditioner for the weak Galerkin method, as well as a reduced system of the weak Galerkin method involving only the degrees of freedom on edges/faces. The preconditioned systems are proved to have condition numbers independent of the mesh size. Numerical experiments are conducted to support the theoretical results.

Investigation of transient surface electric field induced by femtosecond laser irradiation of aluminum

Transient surface electric fields induced by femtosecond laser irradiation of an aluminum film were investigated directly by ultrashort electron pulses. At pump intensities of 2.9~7.1 * 10^10 W/cm2, the transient electric fields last at least one nanosecond with a maximum field strength of 3.2~5.3 * 10^4 V/m at 120 micro m above the aluminum surface. The transient electric fields and the associated evolution of photoelectrons were explained by a "three-layer" model. The potential influence of such fields on reflection ultrafast electron diffraction and time-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy were evaluated.

A Computational Study of Residual KPP Front Speeds in Time-Periodic Cellular Flows in the Small Diffusion Limit

The minimal speeds ($c^*$) of the Kolmogorov-Petrovsky-Piskunov (KPP) fronts at small diffusion ($ε\ll 1$) in a class of time-periodic cellular flows with chaotic streamlines is investigated in this paper. The variational principle of $c^*$ reduces the computation to that of a principal eigenvalue problem on a periodic domain of a linear advection-diffusion operator with space-time periodic coefficients and small diffusion. To solve the advection dominated time-dependent eigenvalue problem efficiently over large time, a combination of finite element and spectral methods, as well as the associated fast solvers, are utilized to accelerate computation. In contrast to the scaling $c^*=\mathcal{O}(ε^{1/4})$ in steady cellular flows, a new relation $c^* = \mathcal{O}(1)$ as $ε\ll 1$ is revealed in the time-periodic cellular flows due to the presence of chaotic streamlines. Residual propagation speed emerges from the Lagrangian chaos which is quantified as a sub-diffusion process.

Simultaneous Investigation of Ultrafast Structural Dynamics and Transient Electric Field by Sub-picosecond Electron Pulses

The ultrafast structure dynamics and surface transient electric field, which are concurrently induced by laser excited electrons of an aluminum nanofilm, have been investigated simultaneously by the same transmission electron diffraction patterns. These two processes are found to be significantly different and distinguishable by tracing the time dependent changes of electron diffraction and deflection angles, respectively. This study also provides a practical means to evaluate simultaneously the effect of transient electric field during the study of structural dynamics under low pump fluence by transmission ultrafast electron diffraction.

Multilevel methods for nonuniformly elliptic operators

We develop and analyze multilevel methods for nonuniformly elliptic operators whose ellipticity holds in a weighted Sobolev space with an $A_2$--Muckenhoupt weight. Using the so-called Xu-Zikatanov (XZ) identity, we derive a nearly uniform convergence result, under the assumption that the underlying mesh is quasi-uniform. We also consider the so-called $α$-harmonic extension to localize fractional powers of elliptic operators. Motivated by the scheme proposed in [R.H. Nochetto, E. Otarola, and A.J. Salgado. A PDE approach to fractional diffusion in general domains: a priori error analysis. arXiv:1302.0698, 2013] we present a multilevel method with line smoothers and obtain a nearly uniform convergence result on anisotropic meshes. Numerical experiments reveal a competitive performance of our method.

A UV complete model of Large N Thermal QCD

Many recent works on large N holographic QCD in the planar limit have not considered UV completions, restricting exclusively towards analyzing the IR physics. Due to this, the UV problems like Landau poles and divergences of Wilson loops including instabilities at high temperatures have not been addressed. In some of our recent papers, we have discussed a possible UV completion, which is conformal in the UV and confining in the far IR, that avoids the Landau poles and the Wilson loop divergences. In this paper we give a field theory realization of this including the complete RG flow. We extend our UV complete model to study scenarios both above and below the deconfinement temperature and argue how phase transition in our model should be understood. Interestingly, because of the UV completion, subtle issues like instability due to negative specific heat do not appear. We also briefly elucidate the advantages that our model may have over other models studying large N thermal QCD.

Local Multilevel Preconditioners for Elliptic Equations with Jump Coefficients on Bisection Grids

The goal of this paper is to design optimal multilevel solvers for the finite element approximation of second order linear elliptic problems with piecewise constant coefficients on bisection grids. Local multigrid and BPX preconditioners are constructed based on local smoothing only at the newest vertices and their immediate neighbors. The analysis of eigenvalue distributions for these local multilevel preconditioned systems shows that there are only a fixed number of eigenvalues which are deteriorated by the large jump. The remaining eigenvalues are bounded uniformly with respect to the coefficients and the meshsize. Therefore, the resulting preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm will converge with an asymptotic rate independent of the coefficients and logarithmically with respect to the meshsize. As a result, the overall computational complexity is nearly optimal.

The Finite Element Approximation of the Nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann Equation

A widely used electrostatics model in the biomolecular modeling community, the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation, along with its finite element approximation, are analyzed in this paper. A regularized Poisson-Boltzmann equation is introduced as an auxiliary problem, making it possible to study the original nonlinear equation with delta distribution sources. A priori error estimates for the finite element approximation are obtained for the regularized Poisson-Boltzmann equation based on certain quasi-uniform grids in two and three dimensions. Adaptive finite element approximation through local refinement driven by an a posteriori error estimate is shown to converge. The Poisson-Boltzmann equation does not appear to have been previously studied in detail theoretically, and it is hoped that this paper will help provide molecular modelers with a better foundation for their analytical and computational work with the Poisson-Boltzmann equation. Note that this article apparently gives the first rigorous convergence result for a numerical discretization technique for the nonlinear Poisson-Boltzmann equation with delta distribution sources, and it also introduces the first provably convergent adaptive method for the equation. This last result is currently one of only a handful of existing convergence results of this type for nonlinear problems.

Convergence and Optimality of Adaptive Mixed Finite Element Methods

The convergence and optimality of adaptive mixed finite element methods for the Poisson equation are established in this paper. The main difficulty for mixed finite element methods is the lack of minimization principle and thus the failure of orthogonality. A quasi-orthogonality property is proved using the fact that the error is orthogonal to the divergence free subspace, while the part of the error that is not divergence free can be bounded by the data oscillation using a discrete stability result. This discrete stability result is also used to get a localized discrete upper bound which is crucial for the proof of the optimality of the adaptive approximation.

Integrated GHz silicon photonic interconnect with micrometer-scale modulators and detectors

We report an optical link on silicon using micrometer-scale ring-resonator enhanced silicon modulators and waveguide-integrated germanium photodetectors. We show 3 Gbps operation of the link with 0.5 V modulator voltage swing and 1.0 V detector bias. The total energy consumption for such a link is estimated to be ~120 fJ/bit. Such compact and low power monolithic link is an essential step towards large-scale on-chip optical interconnects for future microprocessors.

Controlling photonic structures using optical forces

The downscaling of optical systems to the micro and nano-scale results in very compliant systems with nanogram-scale masses, which renders them susceptible to optical forces. Here we show a specially designed resonant structure for enabling efficient static control of the optical response with relatively weak repulsive and attractive optical forces. Using attractive gradient optical forces we demonstrate a static mechanical deformation of up to 20 nanometers in the resonator structure. This deformation is enough to shift the optical resonances by roughly 80 optical linewidths.

Finite-size effects of a left-handed material slab on the image quality

The characteristics of an imaging system formed by a left-handed material (LHM) slab of finite length are studied, and the influence of the finite length of the slab on the image quality is analyzed. Unusual phenomena such as surface bright spots and negative energy stream at the image side are observed and explained as the cavity effects of surface plasmons excited by the evanescent components of the incident field. For a thin LHM slab, the cavity effects are found rather sensitive to the length of the slab, and the bright spots on the bottom surface of the slab may stretch to the image plane and degrade the image quality.
