Leave No Stone Unturned: Uncovering Holistic Audio-Visual Intrinsic Coherence for Deepfake Detection

The rapid progress of generative AI has enabled hyper-realistic audio-visual deepfakes, intensifying threats to personal security and social trust. Most existing deepfake detectors rely either on uni-modal artifacts or audio-visual discrepancies, failing to jointly leverage both sources of information. Moreover, detectors that rely on generator-specific artifacts tend to exhibit degraded generalization when confronted with unseen forgeries. We argue that robust and generalizable detection should be grounded in intrinsic audio-visual coherence within and across modalities. Accordingly, we propose HAVIC, a Holistic Audio-Visual Intrinsic Coherence-based deepfake detector. HAVIC first learns priors of modality-specific structural coherence, inter-modal micro- and macro-coherence by pre-training on authentic videos. Based on the learned priors, HAVIC further performs holistic adaptive aggregation to dynamically fuse audio-visual features for deepfake detection. Additionally, we introduce HiFi-AVDF, a high-fidelity audio-visual deepfake dataset featuring both text-to-video and image-to-video forgeries from state-of-the-art commercial generators. Extensive experiments across several benchmarks demonstrate that HAVIC significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods, achieving improvements of 9.39% AP and 9.37% AUC on the most challenging cross-dataset scenario. Our code and dataset are available at https://github.com/tuffy-studio/HAVIC.

Hierarchical Reinforcement Learning for RIS-Assisted Energy-Efficient RAN

Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) is emerging as a promising technology to boost the energy efficiency (EE) of 5G beyond and 6G networks. Inspired by this potential, in this paper, we investigate the RIS-assisted energy-efficient radio access networks (RAN). In particular, we combine RIS with sleep control techniques, and develop a hierarchical reinforcement learning (HRL) algorithm for network management. In HRL, the meta-controller decides the on/off status of the small base stations (SBSs) in heterogeneous networks, while the sub-controller can change the transmission power levels of SBSs to save energy. The simulations show that the RIS-assisted sleep control can achieve significantly lower energy consumption, higher throughput, and more than doubled energy efficiency than no-RIS conditions.

On the Impacts of Phase Shifting Design and Eavesdropping Uncertainty on Secrecy Metrics of RIS-aided Systems

This paper investigates the secrecy outage probability (SOP), the lower bound of SOP, and the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNZ) of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-assisted systems from an information-theoretic perspective. In particular, we consider the impacts of eavesdroppers' location uncertainty and the phase adjustment uncertainty, namely imperfect coherent phase shifting and discrete phase shifting on RIS. More specifically, analytical and simulation results are presented to show that (i) the SOP gain due to the increase of the RIS reflecting elements number gradually decreases; and (ii) both phase shifting designs demonstrate the same PNZ secrecy performance, in other words, the random discrete phase shifting outperforms the imperfect coherent phase shifting design with reduced complexity.

Effective Rate of RIS-aided Networks with Location and Phase Estimation Uncertainty

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) are planar structures connected to electronic circuitry, which can be employed to steer the electromagnetic signals in a controlled manner. Through this, the signal quality and the effective data rate can be substantially improved. While the benefits of RIS-assisted wireless communications have been investigated for various scenarios, some aspects of the network design, such as coverage, optimal placement of RIS, etc., often require complex optimization and numerical simulations, since the achievable effective rate is difficult to predict. This problem becomes even more difficult in the presence of phase estimation errors or location uncertainty, which can lead to substantial performance degradation if neglected. Considering randomly distributed receivers within a ring-shaped RIS-assisted wireless network, this paper mainly investigates the effective rate by taking into account the above-mentioned impairments. Furthermore, exact closed-form expressions for the effective rate are derived in terms of Meijer's $G$-function, which (i) reveals that the location and phase estimation uncertainty should be well considered in the deployment of RIS in wireless networks; and (ii) facilitates future network design and performance prediction.

Highly Efficient Ultrathin Light Emitting Diodes based on Perovskite Nanocrystals

Light-emitting diodes based on perovskite nanocrystals (PNCs-LEDs) have gained great interest for next-generation display and lighting technologies prized for their color purity, high brightness and luminous efficiency approaching the intrinsic limit imposed by extraction of electroluminescence from the device structure. Although the time is ripe for the development of effective light outcoupling strategies to further boost the device performance, this technologically relevant aspect of PNC-LEDs is still without a definitive solution. Here, following theoretical guidelines and without the integration of complex photonic structures, we realize stable PNC-LEDs with EQE as high as 29.2% (average EQE=24.7%), which substantially break the outcoupling limit of common PNC-LEDs and systematically surpass any previous perovskite-based device. Key to such unprecedented performance is channeling the recombination zone in PNC emissive layers as thin as 10 nm, which we achieve by finely balancing the electron and hole transport using CsPbBr3 PNCs resurfaced with a nickel oxide layer. The ultra-thin approach general and, in principle, applicable to other perovskite nanostructures for fabricating highly efficient, color tunable transparent LEDs ideal for unobtrusive screens and displays and is compatible with the integration of photonic components for further enhanced performance.

Secure Outage Analysis of FSO Communications Over Arbitrarily Correlated M\'alaga Turbulence Channels

In this paper, we analyze the secrecy outage performance for more realistic eavesdropping scenario of free-space optical (FSO) communications, where the main and wiretap links are correlated. The FSO fading channels are modeled by the well-known M\'alaga distribution. Exact expressions for the secrecy performance metrics such as secrecy outage probability (SOP) and probability of the non zero secrecy capacity (PNZSC) are derived, and asymptotic analysis on the SOP is also conducted. The obtained results reveal useful insights on the effect of channel correlation on FSO communications. Counterintuitively, it is found that the secrecy outage performance demonstrates a non-monotonic behavior with the increase of correlation. More specifically, there is an SNR penalty for achieving a target SOP as the correlation increases within some range. However, when the correlation is further increased beyond some threshold, the SOP performance improves significantly.

Secure Vehicular Communications through Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) is considered as a revolutionary technique to improve the wireless system performance by reconfiguring the radio wave propagation environment artificially. Motivated by the potential of RIS in vehicular networks, we analyze the secrecy outage performance of RIS-aided vehicular communications in this paper. More specifically, two vehicular communication scenarios are considered, i.e., a vehicular-to-vehicular (V2V) communication where the RIS acts as a relay and a vehicular-to-infrastructure (V2I) scenario where the RIS functions as the receiver. In both scenarios, a passive eavesdropper is present attempting to retrieve the transmitted information. Closed-form expressions for the secrecy outage probability (SOP) are derived and verified. The results demonstrate the potential of improving secrecy with the aid of RIS under both V2V and V2I communications.

On Performance Characterization of Cascaded Multiwire-PLC/MIMO-RF Communication System

The flexibility of radio frequency (RF) systems and the omnipresence of power cables potentially make the cascaded power line communication (PLC)/RF system an efficient and cost-effective solution in terms of wide coverage and high-speed transmission. This letter proposes an opportunistic decode-and-forward (DF)-based multi-wire/RF relaying system to exploit the advantages of both techniques. The outage probability, bit error rate, and system channel capacity are correspondingly chosen to analyze the properties of the proposed system, which are derived in closed-form expressions and validated via Monte-Carlo simulations. One can observe that our proposed system outperforms the wireless-only system in terms of coverage and data rate, especially when there exists a non-line-of-sight (NLoS) connection between the transmitter and receiver pair.

An Overview of Generic Tools for Information-Theoretic Secrecy Performance Analysis over Wiretap Fading Channels

An alternative or supplementary approach named as physical layer security has been proposed to afford an extra security layer on top of the conventional cryptography technique. In this paper, an overview of secrecy performance investigations over the classic Alice-Bob-Eve wiretap fading channels is conducted. On the basis of the classic wiretap channel model, we have comprehensively listed and thereafter compared the existing works on physical layer secrecy analysis considering the small-scale, large-scale, composite, and cascaded fading channel models. Exact secrecy metrics expressions, including secrecy outage probability (SOP), the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNZ), average secrecy capacity (ASC), and secrecy bounds, including the lower bound of SOP and ergodic secrecy capacity, are presented. In order to encompass the aforementioned four kinds of fading channel models with a more generic and flexible distribution, the mixture gamma (MG), mixture of Gaussian (MoG), and Fox's $H$-function distributions are three useful candidates to largely include the above-mentioned four kinds of fading channel models. It is shown that they are flexible and general when assisting the secrecy analysis to obtain closed-form expressions. Their advantages and limitations are also highlighted. Conclusively, these three approaches are proven to provide a unified secrecy analysis framework and can cover all types of independent wiretap fading channel models. Apart from those, revisiting the existing secrecy enhancement techniques based on our system configuration, the on-off transmission scheme, jamming approach (including artificial noise (AN) & artificial fast fading (AFF)), antenna selection, and security region are presented.

Decision Triggered Data Transmission and Collection in Industrial Internet of Things

We propose a decision triggered data transmission and collection (DTDTC) protocol for condition monitoring and anomaly detection in the industrial Internet of things (IIoT). In the IIoT, the collection, processing, encoding, and transmission of the sensor readings are usually not for the reconstruction of the original data but for decision making at the fusion center. By moving the decision making process to the local end devices, the amount of data transmission can be significantly reduced, especially when normal signals with positive decisions dominate in the whole life cycle and the fusion center is only interested in collecting the abnormal data. The proposed concept combines compressive sensing, machine learning, data transmission, and joint decision making. The sensor readings are encoded and transmitted to the fusion center only when abnormal signals with negative decisions are detected. All the abnormal signals from the end devices are gathered at the fusion center for a joint decision with feedback messages forwarded to the local actuators. The advantage of such an approach lies in that it can significantly reduce the volume of data to be transmitted through wireless links. Moreover, the introduction of compressive sensing can further reduce the dimension of data tremendously. An exemplary case, i.e., diesel engine condition monitoring, is provided to validate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed scheme compared to the conventional ones.

Large Intelligent Surface for Positioning in Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems

Millimeter-wave (mmWave) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system for the fifth generation (5G) cellular communications can also enable single-anchor positioning and object tracking due to its large bandwidth and inherently high angular resolution. In this paper, we introduce the newly invented concept, large intelligent surface (LIS), to mmWave positioning systems, study the theoretical performance bounds (i.e., Cram\'er-Rao lower bounds) for positioning, and evaluate the impact of the number of LIS elements and the value of phase shifters on the position estimation accuracy compared to the conventional scheme with one direct link and one non-line-of-sight path. It is verified that better performance can be achieved with a LIS from the theoretical analyses and numerical study.

Secrecy Analysis of Random MIMO Wireless Networks over $\alpha$-$\mu$ Fading Channels

In this paper, we investigate the secrecy performance of stochastic MIMO wireless networks over small-scale $\alpha$-$\mu$ fading channels, where both the legitimate receivers and eavesdroppers are distributed with two independent homogeneous Poisson point processes (HPPPs). Specifically, accounting for the presence of non-colluding eavesdroppers, secrecy performance metrics, including the connection outage probability (COP), the probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNZ) and ergodic secrecy capacity, are derived regarding the $k$-th nearest/best user cases. The index for the $k$-th nearest user is extracted from the ordering, in terms of the distances between transmitters and receivers, whereas that for the $k$-th best user is based on the combined effects of path-loss and small-scale fading. In particular, the probability density functions (PDFs) and cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of the composite channel gain, for the $k$-th nearest and best user, are characterized, respectively. Benefiting from these results, closed-form representations of the COP, PNZ and ergodic secrecy capacity are subsequently obtained. Furthermore, a limit on the maximal number of the best-ordered users is also computed, for a given secrecy outage constraint. Finally, numerical results are provided to verify the correctness of our derivations. Additionally, the effects of fading parameters, path-loss exponent, and density ratios are also analyzed.

On Physical Layer Security over Fox's $H$-Function Wiretap Fading Channels

Most of the well-known fading distributions, if not all of them, could be encompassed by Fox's $H$-function fading. Consequently, we investigate the exact and asymptotic behavior of physical layer security (PLS) over Fox's $H$-function fading wiretap channels. In particular, closed-form expressions are derived for secrecy outage probability (SOP), probability of non-zero secrecy capacity (PNZ), and average secrecy capacity (ASC). These expressions are given in terms of either univariate or bivariate Fox's $H$-function. In order to show the comprehensive effectiveness of our derivations, three metrics are respectively listed over the following frequently used fading channels, including Rayleigh, Weibull, Nakagami-$m$, $\alpha-\mu$, Fisher-Snedecor (F-S) $\mathcal{F}$, and extended generalized-$\mathcal{K}$ (EGK). Our tractable results are more straightforward and general, besides that, they are feasible and applicable, especially the SOP, which was mostly limited to the lower bound in literature due to the difficulty of achieving closed-from expressions. In order to validate the accuracy of our analytical results, Monte-Carlo simulations are subsequently performed for the special case $\alpha-\mu$ fading channels. One can observe perfect agreements between the exact analytical and simulation results, and highly accurate approximations between the exact and asymptotic analytical results.
