On the steadiness of symmetric solutions to higher order perturbations of KdV

We consider the traveling structure of symmetric solutions to the Rosenau-Kawahara-RLW equation and the perturbed R-KdV-RLW equation. Both equations are higher order perturbations of the classical KdV equation. For the Rosenau-Kawahara-RLW equation, we prove that classical and weak solutions with a priori symmetry must be traveling solutions. For the more complicated perturbed R-KdV-RLW equation, we classify all symmetric traveling solutions, and prove that there exists no nontrivial symmetric traveling solution of solitary type once dissipation or shoaling perturbations exist. This gives a new perspective for evaluating the suitableness of a model for water waves. In addition, this result illustrates the sharpness of the symmetry principle in [Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN, 2009; Ehrnstrom, Holden \& Raynaud] for solitary waves.

On the steadiness of symmetric solutions to two dimensional dispersive models

In this paper, we consider the steadiness of symmetric solutions to two dispersive models in shallow water and hyperelastic mechanics, respectively. These models are derived previously in the two-dimensional setting and can be viewed as the generalization of the Camassa-Holm and Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations. For these two models, we prove that symmetry of classical solutions implies steadiness in the horizontal direction. We also confirm the such connection between symmetry and steadiness in weak formulation, which includes in particular the peaked solutions.

Existence, regularity, and symmetry of periodic traveling waves for Gardner-Ostrovsky type equations

We study the existence, regularity, and symmetry of periodic traveling solutions to a class of Gardner-Ostrovsky type equations, including the classical Gardner-Ostrovsky equation, the (modified) Ostrovsky, and the reduced (modified) Ostrovsky equation. The modified Ostrovsky equation is also known as the short pulse equation. The Gardner-Ostrovsky equation is a model for internal ocean waves of large amplitude. We prove the existence of nontrivial, periodic traveling wave solutions using local bifurcation theory, where the wave speed serves as the bifurcation parameter. Moreover, we give a regularity analysis for periodic traveling solutions in the presence as well as absence of Boussinesq dispersion. We see that the presence of Boussinesq dispersion implies smoothness of periodic traveling wave solutions, while its absence may lead to singularities in the form of peaks or cusps. Eventually, we study the symmetry of periodic traveling solutions by the method of moving planes. A novel feature of the symmetry results in the absence of Boussinesq dispersion is that we do not need to impose a traditional monotonicity condition or a recently developed reflection criterion on the wave profiles to prove the statement on the symmetry of periodic traveling waves.

Symmetry of periodic traveling waves for nonlocal dispersive equations

Of concern is the a priori symmetry of traveling wave solutions for a general class of nonlocal dispersive equations \[ u_t +(u^2 +Lu)_x =0, \] where $L$ is a Fourier multiplier operator with symbol $m$. Our analysis includes both homogeneous and inhomogeneous symbols. We characterize a class of symbols $m$ guaranteeing that periodic traveling wave solutions are symmetric under a mild assumption on the wave profile. Particularly, instead of considering waves with a unique crest and trough per period or a monotone structure near troughs as classically imposed in the water wave problem, we formulate a reflection criterion, which allows to affirm the symmetry of periodic traveling waves. The reflection criterion weakens the assumption of monotonicity between trough and crest and enables to treat a priori solutions with multiple crests of different sizes per period. Moreover, our result not only applies to smooth solutions, but also to traveling waves with a non-smooth structure such as peaks or cusps at a crest. The proof relies on a so-called touching lemma, which is related to a strong maximum principle for elliptic operators, and a weak form of the celebrated method of moving planes.

Exponential decay and symmetry of solitary waves to the Degasperis-Procesi equation

We improve the decay argument by [Bona and Li, J. Math. Pures Appl., 1997] for solitary waves of general dispersive equations and illustrate it in the proof for the exponential decay of solitary waves to steady Degasperis-Procesi equation in the nonlocal formulation. In addition, we give a method which confirms the symmetry of solitary waves of the maximum height. Finally, we discover how the symmetric structure is connected to the steady structure of solutions to the Degasperis-Procesi equation, and give a more intuitive proof for symmetric solutions to be traveling waves. The improved argument and new methods above can be used for the decay rate of solitary waves to many other dispersive equations and will give new perspectives on symmetric solutions for general evolution equations.

Exact solution of a Neumann boundary value problem for the stationary axisymmetric Einstein equations

For a stationary and axisymmetric spacetime, the vacuum Einstein field equations reduce to a single nonlinear PDE in two dimensions called the Ernst equation. By solving this equation with a {\it Dirichlet} boundary condition imposed along the disk, Neugebauer and Meinel in the 1990s famously derived an explicit expression for the spacetime metric corresponding to the Bardeen-Wagoner uniformly rotating disk of dust. In this paper, we consider a similar boundary value problem for a rotating disk in which a {\it Neumann} boundary condition is imposed along the disk instead of a Dirichlet condition. Using the integrable structure of the Ernst equation, we are able to reduce the problem to a Riemann-Hilbert problem on a genus one Riemann surface. By solving this Riemann-Hilbert problem in terms of theta functions, we obtain an explicit expression for the Ernst potential. Finally, a Riemann surface degeneration argument leads to an expression for the associated spacetime metric.

Symmetric solutions of evolutionary partial differential equations

We show that for a large class of evolutionary nonlinear and nonlocal partial differential equations, symmetry of solutions implies very restrictive properties of the solutions and symmetry axes. These restrictions are formulated in terms of three principles, based on the structure of the equations. The first principle covers equations that allow for steady solutions and shows that any spatially symmetric solution is in fact steady with a speed determined by the motion of the axis of symmetry at the initial time. The second principle includes equations that admit breathers and steady waves, and therefore is less strong: it holds that the axes of symmetry are constant in time. The last principle is a mixed case, when the equation contains terms of the kind from both earlier principles, and there may be different outcomes; for a class of such equations one obtains that a spatially symmetric solution must be constant in both time and space. We list and give examples of more than 30 well-known equations and systems in one and several dimensions satisfying these principles; corresponding results for weak formulations of these equations may be attained using the same techniques. Our investigation is a generalisation of a local and one-dimensional version of the first principle from [E., Holden, and Raynaud, 2009] to nonlocal equations, systems and higher dimensions, as well as a study of the standing and mixed cases.

Classical well-posedness in dispersive equations with nonlinearities of mild regularity, and a composition theorem in Besov spaces

For both localized and periodic initial data, we prove local existence in classical energy space $H^s, s>\frac{3}{2}$, for a class of dispersive equations $u_{t}+(n(u))_{x}+Lu_{x}=0$ with nonlinearities of mild regularity. Our results are valid for symmetric Fourier multiplier operators $L$ whose symbol is of temperate growth, and $n(\cdot)$ in local Sobolev space $H^{s+2}_{\mathrm{loc}}(\mathbb{R})$. In particular, the results include non-smooth and exponentially growing nonlinearities. Our proof is based on a combination of semi-group methods and a new composition result for Besov spaces. In particular, we extend a previous result for Nemytskii operators on Besov spaces on $\mathbb{R}$ to the periodic setting by using the difference-derivative characterization of Besov spaces.

A conditional well-posedness result for the bidirectional Whitham equation

We consider the initial-value problem for the bidirectional Whitham equation, a system which combines the full two-way dispersion relation from the incompressible Euler equations with a canonical shallow-water nonlinearity. We prove local well-posedness in classical Sobolev spaces in the localised as well as the periodic case, using a square-root type transformation to symmetrise the system. The existence theory requires a non-vanishing surface elevation, indicating that the problem is ill-posed for more general initial data.

Symmetry and decay of traveling wave solutions to the Whitham equation

This paper is concerned with decay and symmetry properties of solitary wave solutions to a nonlocal shallow water wave model. It is shown that all supercritical solitary wave solutions are symmetric and monotone on either side of the crest. The proof is based on a priori decay estimates and the method of moving planes. Furthermore, a close relation between symmetric and traveling wave solutions is established.

On classical global solutions of nonlinear wave equations with large data

This paper studies the Cauchy problem for systems of semi-linear wave equations on $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$ with nonlinear terms satisfying the null conditions. We construct future global-in-time classical solutions with arbitrarily large initial energy. The choice of the large Cauchy initial data is inspired by Christodoulou's characteristic initial data in his work \cite{Ch-08} on formation of black-holes. The main innovation of the current work is that we discovered a relaxed energy ansatz which allows us to prove decay-in-time-estimate. Therefore, the new estimates can also be applied in studying the Cauchy problem for Einstein equations.

Existence and uniqueness of generalized monopoles in six-dimensional non-Abelian gauge theory

In this paper, we established the existence and uniqueness of the spherically symmetric monopole solutions in SO(5) gauge theory with Higgs scalar fields in the vector representation in six-dimensional Minkowski space-time and obtain sharp asymptotic estimates for the solutions. Our method is based on a dynamical shooting approach that depends on two shooting parameters which provides an effective framework for constructing the generalized monopoles in six-dimensional Minkowski space-time.
