Compass Impurity Model of Tb Substitution in Sr2IrO4

We show that upon Tb substitution the interaction between the magnetic moments on the impurity Tb$^{4+}$ ion and its surrounding Ir$^{4+}$ ions is described by a "compass" model, i.e., Ising-like interaction favoring the magnetic moments across each bond to align along the bond direction. Such interaction nucleates quenched magnetic vortices near the impurities and drives a reentrant transition out of the antiferromagnetic ordered phase at low temperatures hence quickly suppresses the Néel temperature consistent with the experiment [Phys. Rev. B \textbf{92}, 214411 (2015)]. As a by-product, we propose that the compass model can be realized in ordered double perovskites composed of the spin-orbital-coupled $d^{5}$ ions and the half-closed-shell $f^{7}$ ions.

Quantum Oscillation as Diagnostics of Pseudogap State in Underdoped Cuprates

The Fermi surface in underdoped cuprates is reconstructed by the charge density wave (CDW) order in the pseudogap phase. Theoretical proposals can be divided into two classes: one assumes the underlying Fermi surface without CDW as a conventional large surface; the other assumes small hole-like Fermi pockets. In both scenarios, we theoretically study the quantum oscillation and find three evenly spaced peaks in the oscillation spectra. The central dominant peak is induced by the CDW order. Its effective mass is strongly enhanced as the CDW vanishes in agreement with experiments. But the two scenarios have different understandings of the subdominant satellite peaks. In the large-surface scenario they are induced by the interlayer tunneling between the bilayer CuO$_{2}$ planes. Their effective masses are also enhanced with descreasing CDW. In the small-pocket scenario one of the subdominant peaks comes from the original small Fermi pockets of the pseudogap state. Its effective mass is nearly independent of the CDW strength and increases monotonically with the doping. We propose future quantum oscillation experiments to test these different predictions and thus to clarify the underlying Fermi surface structure of the pseudogap state.

Strong coupling between Tamm plasmon polariton and two dimensional semiconductor excitons

Two dimensional (2D) semiconductor materials of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) manifest many peculiar physical phenomena in the light-matter interaction. Due to their ultrathin property, strong interaction with light and the robust excitons at room temperature, they provide a perfect platform for studying the physics of strong coupling in low dimension and at room temperature. Here we report the strong coupling between 2D semiconductor excitons and Tamm plasmon polaritons (TPPs). We observe a Rabi splitting of about 54 meV at room temperature by measuring the angle resolved differential reflectivity spectra and simulate the theoretical results by using the transfer matrix method. Our results will promote the realization of the TPP based ultrathin polariton devices at room temperature.

Quantum oscillation in narrow-gap topological insulators

The canonical understanding of quantum oscillation in metals is challenged by the observation of de Haas-van Alphen effect in an insulator, SmB$_{6}$ [Tan \emph{et al}, Science {\bf349}, 287 (2015)]. Based on a two-band model with inverted band structure, we show that the periodically narrowing hybridization gap in magnetic fields can induce the oscillation of low-energy density of states in the bulk, which is observable provided that the hybridization gap is narrow and comparable to the Landau level spacing. Its temperature dependence strongly deviates from the Lifshitz-Kosevich theory. The nontrivial band topology manifests itself as a nonzero Berry phase in the oscillation pattern, which crosses over to a trivial Berry phase by increasing the temperature or the magnetic field. Further predictions to experiments are also proposed.

Realization of Two-Dimensional Spin-orbit Coupling for Bose-Einstein Condensates

Cold atoms with laser-induced spin-orbit (SO) interactions provide intriguing new platforms to explore novel quantum physics beyond natural conditions of solids. Recent experiments demonstrated the one-dimensional (1D) SO coupling for boson and fermion gases. However, realization of 2D SO interaction, a much more important task, remains very challenging. Here we propose and experimentally realize, for the first time, 2D SO coupling and topological band with $^{87}$Rb degenerate gas through a minimal optical Raman lattice scheme, without relying on phase locking or fine tuning of optical potentials. A controllable crossover between 2D and 1D SO couplings is studied, and the SO effects and nontrivial band topology are observed by measuring the atomic cloud distribution and spin texture in the momentum space. Our realization of 2D SO coupling with advantages of small heating and topological stability opens a broad avenue in cold atoms to study exotic quantum phases, including the highly-sought-after topological superfluid phases.

Giant Two-Photon Absorption in Monolayer MoS2

Strong two-photon absorption (TPA) in monolayer MoS2 is demonstrated in contrast to saturable absorption (SA) in multilayer MoS2 under the excitation of femtosecond laser pulses in the near infrared region. MoS2 in the forms of monolayer single crystal and multilayer triangular islands are grown on either quartz or SiO2/Si by employing the seeding method through chemistry vapor deposition. The nonlinear transmission measurements reveal that monolayer MoS2 possesses a giant nonsaturation TPA coefficient, larger than that of conventional semiconductors. As a result of TPA, two-photon pumped frequency up-converted luminescence is observed directly in the monolayer MoS2. For the multilayer MoS2, the SA response is demonstrated with the ratio of the excited-state absorption cross section to ground-state cross section of 0.18. In addition, the laser damage threshold of the monolayer MoS2 is 97 GW/cm2, larger than that of the multilayer MoS2 of 78 GW/cm2.

Direct Observationof DegenerateTwo-Photon Absorption and Its Saturation in WS2 and MoS2 Monolayer and Few-Layer Films

The optical nonlinearity of WS2, MoS2 monolayer and few-layer films was investigated using the Z-scan technique with femtosecond pulses from the visible to the near infrared. The dependence of nonlinear absorption of the WS2 and MoS2 films on layer number and excitation wavelength was studied systematically. WS2 with 1~3 layers exhibits a giant two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient. Saturation of TPA for WS2 with 1~3 layers and MoS2 with 25~27 layers was observed. The giant nonlinearity of WS2 and MoS2 is attributed to two dimensional confinement, a giant exciton effect and the band edge resonance of TPA.

Optical Limiting and Theoretical Modelling of Layered Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Nanosheets

Nonlinear optical property of transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) nanosheet dispersions, including MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2, was performed by using Z-scan technique with ns pulsed laser at 1064 nm and 532 nm. The results demonstrate that the TMDC dispersions exhibit significant optical limiting response at 1064 nm due to nonlinear scattering, in contrast to the combined effect of both saturable absorption and nonlinear scattering at 532 nm. Selenium compounds show better optical limiting performance than that of the sulfides in the near infrared. A liquid dispersion system based theoretical modelling is proposed to estimate the number density of the nanosheet dispersions, the relationship between incident laser fluence and the size of the laser generated micro-bubbles, and hence the Mie scattering-induced broadband optical limiting behavior in the TMDC dispersions.

Reconstructed Fermi surface and quantum oscillation of doped resonating valence bond state with incommensurate charge order in underdoped cuprates

Recent experiments have revealed incommensurate charge density wave (CDW) in the pseudogap regime in underdoped cuprates, e.g. YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$ and HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$. However, its relationship with the pseudogap is still controversial. In this work, we take a phenomenological synthesis of the doped resonating valence bond (RVB) state and the CDW order. Starting from the Yang-Rice-Zhang Green's function ansatz for the doped RVB state [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 73}, 174501 (2006)], in which the Fermi surface is partially truncated into four nodal hole-like Fermi pockets by the antinodal RVB gap, we show that the CDW order at the wavevectors connecting the tips of the Fermi arcs (the hotspots) induces Fermi surface reconstruction, giving rise to an electron-like Fermi pocket ($α$ orbit) and a new hole-like Fermi pocket ($β$ orbit). The $α$ orbit is formed by joining the Fermi arcs at the hotspots and it dominates the quantum oscillation Fourier spectrum, while the $β$ orbit is formed by joining the outer patches of the original hole pockets, which has vanishingly small spectral weight. The areas enclosed by these orbits are extracted from the density of states oscillation in magnetic field and quantitatively agree with the experiments.

Supercontinuum generation and carrier envelope offset frequency measurement in a tapered single-mode fiber

We report supercontinuum generation by launching femtosecond Yb fiber laser pulses into a tapered single-mode fiber of 3 um core diameter. A spectrum of more than one octave, from 550 to 1400 nm, has been obtained with an output power of 1.3 W at a repetition rate of 250 MHz, corresponding to a coupling efficiency of up to 60%. By using a typical f-2f interferometer, the carrier envelope offset frequency was measured and found to have a signal-to-noise ratio of nearly 30 dB.

Sign Structure, Electron Fractionalization, and Emergent Gauge Description of the Hubbard Model

The Fermi sign structure plays a crucial role for a Landau's Fermi liquid. In this work, we identify the exact sign structure for the bipartite Hubbard model at an arbitrary strength of the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$. This general sign structure naturally reproduces the conventional fermion signs in the small $U$ limit, and the phase string signs of the $t$-$J$ model in the large $U$ limit. We focus on the half-filling case as an example to illustrate why such a generic sign structure is important to understand the transition from the weakly correlated Fermi liquid regime to the strongly correlated Mott regime. In particular, we show that an electron fractionalization scheme with emergent partons and mutual Chern-Simons gauge fields provides a suitable framework to accurately handle the singular sign structure in two dimensions. A ground state ansatz at half-filling with incorporating the sign structure and the specific electron fractionalization is also proposed.

Softening of Roton and Phonon Modes in a Bose-Einstein Condensate with Spin-Orbit Coupling

Roton-type excitations usually emerge from strong correlations or long-range interactions, as in superfluid helium or dipolar ultracold atoms. However, in weakly short-range interacting quantum gas, the recently synthesized spin-orbit (SO) coupling can lead to various unconventional phases of superfluidity, and give rise to an excitation spectrum of roton-maxon character. Using Bragg spectroscopy we study a SO coupled Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}$Rb atoms, and show that the excitation spectrum in a "magnetized" phase clearly possesses a two-branch and roton-maxon structure. As Raman coupling strength $Ω$ is decreased, a roton-mode softening is observed, as a precursor of the phase transition to a stripe phase that spontaneously breaks spatially translational symmetry. The measured roton gaps agree well with theoretical calculations. Further, we determine sound velocities both in the magnetized and the non-magnetized phase, and a phonon-mode softening is observed around the phase transition in between. The validity of the $f$-sum rule is examined.

Experimental Determination of the Finite-Temperature Phase Diagram of a Spin-Orbit Coupled Bose Gas

Spin-orbit (SO) coupling has led to numerously exciting phenomena in electron systems, for instance, the recently discovered topological insulator. The synthesized SO coupling with ultracold neutral atoms opens a new avenue of quantum simulation, and gives us an opportunity to study SO coupling in bosonic systems. Indeed, SO coupling leads to many new phenomena of boson superfluidity and various condensate phases that spontaneously break different symmetries. A richer structure of symmetry breaking always results in a nontrivial finite-temperature phase diagram. While the thermodynamics of the SO coupled Bose gas at finite temperature is still unknown either in theory or experiment. In this work, we experimentally generate the SO coupling in ultracold Rb-87 gas to explore in a large temperature range and get most key features. We discover a novel phase transition between the stripe ordered phase and the magnetized phase, which is reminiscent of temperature-driven transition from the B phase to the A phase in super- fluid Helium-3 and from spin-density-wave to spin nematic transition in iron pnictide. We also observe that the magnetic phase transition and the Bose condensate transition occur simultaneously as temperature decreases. Our work determines the entire finite-temperature phase diagram of SO coupled Bose gas and further demonstrate the power of quantum simulation.

Scattering and effective interactions of ultracold atoms with spin-orbit coupling

We derive an analytical expression for the scattering amplitude of two ultracold atoms of arbitrary spin and with general spin-orbit (SO) coupling, on the basis of our recent work (Phys. Rev. A \textbf{86}, 053608 (2012)). As an application, we demonstrate that SO coupling can induce scattering resonance in the case with finite scattering length. The same approach can be applied to calculate the two-body bound state of SO-coupled ultracold atoms. For the ultracold spin-1/2 fermi gases in three- or two- dimensional systems with SO coupling, we also obtain the renormalization relation of effective contact interaction with momentum cutoff, as well as the applicability of Huang-Yang pseudo-potential.

Spin-Orbit Coupling Induced Coherent Production of Feshbach Molecules in a Degenerate Fermi Gas

In this work we demonstrate a dynamic process in which SO coupling can coherently produce s-wave Feshbach molecules from a fully polarized Fermi gas, and can induce a coherent oscillation between Feshbach molecules and spin polarized gas. For comparison, we also show that such phenomena are absent if the inter-component coupling is momentum-independent. This demonstrates experimentally that SO coupling does provide finite matrix element between a singlet state and a triplet state, and therefore, implies the bound pairs of a system with SO coupling have triplet p-wave component, which can become topological superfluid by further cooling these pairs to condensation and confining them to lower dimension.

Stability of Excited Dressed States with Spin-Orbit Coupling

We study the decay behaviors of ultracold atoms in metastable states with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), and demonstrate that there are two SOC-induced decay mechanisms. One arises from the trapping potential and the other is due to interatomic collision. We present general schemes for calculating decay rates from these two mechanisms, and illustrate how the decay rates can be controlled by experimental parameters. We experimentally measure the decay rates over a broad parameter region, and the results agree well with theoretical calculations. This work provides an insight for both quantum simulation involving metastable dressed states and studies on few-body problems with SO coupling.

Interatomic collisions in two-dimensional and quasi-two-dimensional confinements with spin-orbit coupling

We investigate the low-energy scattering and bound states of two two-component fermionic atoms in pure two-dimensional (2D) and quasi-2D confinements with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We find that the SOC qualitatively changes the behavior of the 2D scattering amplitude in the low-energy limit. For quasi-2D systems we obtain the analytic expression for the effective-2D scattering amplitude and the algebraic equations for the two-atom bound state energy. Based on these results, we further derive the effective 2D interaction potential between two ultracold atoms in the quasi-2D confinement with Rashba SOC. These results are crucial for the control of the 2D effective physics in quasi-2D geometry via the confinement intensity and the atomic three-dimensional scattering length.

Modified Bethe-Peierls boundary condition for ultracold atoms with Spin-Orbit coupling

We show that the Bethe-Peierls (BP) boundary condition should be modified for ultracold atoms with spin-orbit (SO) coupling. Moreover, we derive a general form of the modified BP boundary condition, which is applicable to a system with arbitrary kind of SO coupling. In the modified BP condition, an anisotropic term appears and the inter-atomic scattering length is normally SO-coupling dependent. For the special system in the current experiments, however, it can be proved that the scattering length is SO-coupling independent, and takes the same value as in the case without SO coupling. Our result is helpful for the study of both few-body and many-body physics in SO-coupled ultracold gases.
