3d gravity from Virasoro TQFT: Holography, wormholes and knots

We further develop the description of three-dimensional quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of Virasoro TQFT formulated in our previous paper arXiv:2304.13650. We compare the partition functions computed in the Virasoro TQFT formalism to the semiclassical evaluation of Euclidean gravity partition functions. This matching is highly non-trivial, but can be checked directly in some examples. We then showcase the formalism in action, by computing the gravity partition functions of many relevant topologies. For holographic applications, we focus on the partition functions of Euclidean multi-boundary wormholes with three-punctured spheres as boundaries. This precisely quantifies the higher moments of the structure constants in the proposed ensemble boundary dual and subjects the proposal to thorough checks. Finally, we investigate in detail the example of the figure eight knot complement as a hyperbolic 3-manifold. We show that the Virasoro TQFT partition function is identical to the partition function computed in Teichmüller theory, thus giving strong evidence for the equivalence of these TQFTs. We also show how to produce a large class of manifolds via Dehn surgery on the figure eight knot.

Lorentzian contours for tree-level string amplitudes

We engineer compact contours on the moduli spaces of genus-zero Riemann surfaces that achieve analytic continuation from Euclidean to Lorentzian worldsheets. These generalized Pochhammer contours are based on the combinatorics of associahedra and make the analytic properties of tree-level amplitudes entirely manifest for any number and type of external strings. We use them in practice to perform first numerical computations of open and closed string amplitudes directly in the physical kinematics for $n=4,5,6,7,8,9$. We provide a code that allows anyone to do such computations.

Regge Limit of One-Loop String Amplitudes

We study the high-energy limit of $2 \to 2$ one-loop string amplitudes at fixed momentum transfer. For the closed string, the high-energy behaviour of the amplitudes can be determined from Regge theory just like in field theory, as was first discussed by Amati, Ciafaloni and Veneziano. However, field theory intuition partially breaks down for the open-string amplitude, where amplitudes can exhibit surprising asymptotics in the high-energy limit depending on the topology of the diagram. We call this phenomenon Regge attenuation. We extract Regge limits by a combination of unitarity cuts and saddle-point analysis. We show that the leading contribution of the planar open-string amplitude is sufficiently simple that we can extract it at any loop order. This allows us to resum the genus expansion in a certain limit and demonstrate that the leading Regge trajectory remains linear in that limit.

The Virasoro Minimal String

We introduce a critical string theory in two dimensions and demonstrate that this theory, viewed as two-dimensional quantum gravity on the worldsheet, is equivalent to a double-scaled matrix integral. The worldsheet theory consists of Liouville CFT with central charge $c\geq 25$ coupled to timelike Liouville CFT with central charge $26-c$. The double-scaled matrix integral has as its leading density of states the universal Cardy density of primaries in a two-dimensional CFT, thus motivating the name Virasoro minimal string. The duality holds for any value of the continuous parameter $c$ and reduces to the JT gravity/matrix integral duality in the large central charge limit. It thus provides a precise stringy realization of JT gravity. The main observables of the Virasoro minimal string are quantum analogues of the Weil-Petersson volumes, which are computed as absolutely convergent integrals of worldsheet CFT correlators over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. By exploiting a relation of the Virasoro minimal string to three-dimensional gravity and intersection theory on the moduli space of Riemann surfaces, we are able to give a direct derivation of the duality. We provide many checks, such as explicit numerical - and in special cases, analytic - integration of string diagrams, the identification of the CFT boundary conditions with asymptotic boundaries of the two-dimensional spacetime, and the matching between the leading non-perturbative corrections of the worldsheet theory and the matrix integral. As a byproduct, we discover natural conformal boundary conditions for timelike Liouville CFT.

Holographic Weyl anomaly in string theory

We compute the worldsheet sphere partition function of string theory on global AdS$_3$ with pure NS-NS flux. Because of an unfixed Möbius symmetry on the worldsheet, there is a cancellation of infinities and only a part of the answer is unambiguous. We show that it precisely reproduces the holographic Weyl anomaly and the ambiguous terms correspond to the possible counterterms of the boundary CFT.

Notes on crossing transformations of Virasoro conformal blocks

We carefully bootstrap the crossing kernels of Virasoro conformal blocks from first principles. Our approach emphasizes the Hilbert space structure of the space of Virasoro conformal blocks which makes the consistency of crossing transformations obvious. We give a pedagogical explanation of the necessary background about Virasoro conformal blocks and special functions. We also explain several applications and prove new results about the crossing kernels.

Solving 3d Gravity with Virasoro TQFT

We propose a precise reformulation of 3d quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant in terms of a topological quantum field theory based on the quantization of the Teichmüller space of Riemann surfaces that we refer to as ``Virasoro TQFT.'' This TQFT is similar, but importantly not equivalent, to $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ Chern-Simons theory. This sharpens the folklore that 3d gravity is related to $\text{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ Chern-Simons theory into a precise correspondence, and resolves some well-known issues with this lore at the quantum level. Our proposal is computationally very useful and provides a powerful tool for the further study of 3d gravity. In particular, we explain how together with standard TQFT surgery techniques this leads to a fully algorithmic procedure for the computation of the gravity partition function on a fixed topology exactly in the central charge. Mathematically, the relation leads to many nontrivial conjectures for hyperbolic 3-manifolds, Virasoro conformal blocks and crossing kernels.

Evaluating one-loop string amplitudes

We evaluate one-loop open-string amplitudes at finite $α'$ for the first time. Our method involves a deformation of the integration contour over the modular parameter $τ$ to a fractal contour introduced by Rademacher in the context of analytic number theory. This procedure leads to explicit and practical formulas for the one-loop four-point amplitudes in type-I superstring theory, amenable to numerical evaluation. We plot the amplitudes as a function of the Mandelstam invariants $s$ and $t$ and directly verify long-standing conjectures about their behaviour at high energies.

2D dilaton gravity and the Weil-Petersson volumes with conical defects

We derive the Weil-Petersson measure on the moduli space of hyperbolic surfaces with defects of arbitrary opening angles and use this to compute its volume. We conjecture a matrix integral computing the corresponding volumes and confirm agreement in simple cases. We combine this mathematical result with the equivariant localization approach to Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity to justify a proposed exact solution of pure 2d dilaton gravity for a large class of dilaton potentials.

Unitarity Cuts of the Worldsheet

We compute the imaginary parts of genus-one string scattering amplitudes. Following Witten's $i\varepsilon$ prescription for the integration contour on the moduli space of worldsheets, we give a general algorithm for computing unitarity cuts of the annulus, Möbius strip, and torus topologies exactly in $α'$. With the help of tropical analysis, we show how the intricate pattern of thresholds (normal and anomalous) opening up arises from the worldsheet computation. The result is a manifestly-convergent representation of the imaginary parts of amplitudes, which has the analytic form expected from Cutkosky rules in field theory, but bypasses the need for performing laborious sums over the intermediate states. We use this representation to study various physical aspects of string amplitudes, including their behavior in the $(s,t)$ plane, exponential suppression, decay widths of massive strings, total cross section, and low-energy expansions. We find that planar annulus amplitudes exhibit a version of low-spin dominance: at any finite energy, only a finite number of low partial-wave spins give an appreciable contribution to the imaginary part.

String correlators on $\text{AdS}_3$: Analytic structure and dual CFT

We continue our study of string correlators on Euclidean $\text{AdS}_3$ with pure NS-NS flux. The worldsheet and spacetime correlators have a rich analytic structure, which we analyse completely for genus 0 four-point functions. We show that correlators exhibit a simple behaviour near their singularities. The spacetime correlators are meromorphic functions in the $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$-spins, whose pole structure is shown to agree with the prediction of a recent proposal for the dual $\text{CFT}_2$. Moreover, we also compute the residues of the spacetime correlators for some of the poles exactly and find again a perfect match with the proposal for the dual $\text{CFT}_2$, thereby checking the duality for some non-trivial four-point functions exactly. Our computations simplify drastically in the tensionless limit of $\mathrm{AdS}_3 \times \mathrm{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ where the behaviour near the poles gives in fact the exact answer. This paper is the third in a series with several installments.

Off-shell Partition Functions in 3d Gravity

We explore three-dimensional gravity with negative cosmological constant via canonical quantization. We focus on chiral gravity which is related to a single copy of $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ Chern-Simons theory and is simpler to treat in canonical quantization. Its phase space for an initial value surface $Σ$ is given by the appropriate moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We use geometric quantization to compute partition functions of chiral gravity on three-manifolds of the form $Σ\times \mathrm{S}^1$, where $Σ$ can have asymptotic boundaries. Most of these topologies do not admit a classical solution and are thus not amenable to a direct semiclassical path integral computation. We use an index theorem that expresses the partition function as an integral of characteristic classes over phase space. In the presence of $n$ asymptotic boundaries, we use techniques from equivariant cohomology to localize the integral to a finite-dimensional integral over $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{g,n}$, which we evaluate in low genus cases. Higher genus partition functions quickly become complicated since they depend in an oscillatory way on Newton's constant. There is a precise sense in which one can isolate the non-oscillatory part which we call the fake partition function. We establish that there is a topological recursion that computes the fake partition functions for arbitrary Riemann surfaces $Σ$. There is a scaling limit in which the model reduces to JT gravity and our methods give a novel way to compute JT partition functions via equivariant localization.

On Unitarity of Tree-Level String Amplitudes

Four-particle tree-level scattering amplitudes in string theory are magically consistent with unitarity, reflected in the non-trivial fact that beneath the critical dimension, the residues of the amplitudes on massive poles can be expanded in partial waves with all positive coefficients. While this follows (rather indirectly) from the no-ghost theorem, the simplicity of the statement and its fundamental importance for the physical consistency of string theory begs for a more direct and elementary understanding. In this note we take a step in this direction by presenting a new expression for the partial wave coefficients of string amplitudes, given by surprisingly simple double/triple contour integrals for open/closed strings. This representation allows us to directly prove unitarity of all superstring theories in $D \leq 6$ spacetime dimensions, and can also be used to determine various asymptotics of the partial waves at large mass levels.

A perturbative CFT dual for pure NS-NS AdS$_3$ strings

We construct a CFT dual to string theory on AdS$_3$ with pure NS-NS flux. It is given by a symmetric orbifold of a linear dilaton theory deformed by a marginal operator from the twist-2 sector. We compute two- and three-point functions on the CFT side to 4th order in conformal perturbation theory at large $N$. They agree with the string computation at genus 0, thus providing ample evidence for a duality. We also show that the full spectra of both short and long strings on the CFT and the string side match. The duality should be understood as perturbative in $N^{-1}$.

String correlators on $\text{AdS}_3$: Four-point functions

We propose a closed-form formula for genus 0 four-point functions in $\text{AdS}_3$ string theory with pure NS-NS flux including arbitrary amounts of spectral flow. Our formula passes many non-trivial consistency checks and has intriguing connections to Hurwitz theory. This paper is the second in a series with several instalments.

String correlators on $\text{AdS}_3$: Three-point functions

We revisit the computation of string worldsheet correlators on Euclidean $\text{AdS}_3$ with pure NS-NS background. We compute correlation functions with insertions of spectrally flowed operators. We explicitly solve all the known constraints of the model and for the first time conjecture a closed formula for three-point functions with arbitrary amount of spectral flow. We explain the relation of our results with previous computations in the literature and derive the fusion rules of the model. This paper is the first in a series with several installments.

The Disk Partition Function in String Theory

We investigate the disk partition function for the open string. This is a subtle problem because of the presence of a residual gauge group $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ on the worldsheet even after fixing the conformal gauge. It naively has infinite volume and leads to a vanishing answer. We use different methods that all demonstrate that $\mathrm{PSL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ effectively behaves like a group with finite negative volume in the path integral, which leads to a simple prescription for the computation of the disk partition function. We apply our findings to give a simple rederivation of the D-brane tensions.

Partition functions of the tensionless string

We consider string theory on $\text{AdS}_3 \times \text{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ in the tensionless limit, with one unit of NS-NS flux. This theory is conjectured to describe the symmetric product orbifold CFT. We consider the string on different Euclidean backgrounds such as thermal $\text{AdS}_3$, the BTZ black hole, conical defects and wormhole geometries. In simple examples we compute the full string partition function. We find it to be independent of the precise bulk geometry, but only dependent on the geometry of the conformal boundary. For example, the string partition function on thermal $\text{AdS}_3$ and the conical defect with a torus boundary is shown to agree, thus giving evidence for the equivalence of the tensionless string on these different background geometries. We also find that thermal $\text{AdS}_3$ and the BTZ black hole are dual descriptions and the vacuum of the BTZ black hole is mapped to a single long string winding many times asymptotically around thermal $\text{AdS}_3$. Thus the system yields a concrete example of the string-black hole transition. Consequently, reproducing the boundary partition function does not require a sum over bulk geometries, but rather agrees with the string partition function on any bulk geometry with the appropriate boundary. We argue that the same mechanism can lead to a resolution of the factorization problem when geometries with disconnected boundaries are considered, since the connected and disconnected geometries give the same contribution and we do not have to include them separately.
