We investigate the canonical pseudo-Riemannian metrics associated with Jordan-analogues of the coadjoint orbits for pseudo-Euclidean Jordan superalgebras.
Jordan algebras arise naturally in (quantum) information geometry, and we want to understand their role and their structure within that framework. Inspired by Kirillov's discussion of the symplectic structure on coadjoint orbits, we provide a similar construction in the case of real Jordan algebras. Given a real, finite-dimensional, formally real Jordan algebra ${\mathcal J}$, we exploit the generalized distribution determined by the Jordan product on the dual ${\mathcal J}^{\star}$ to induce a pseudo-Riemannian metric tensor on the leaves of the distribution. In particular, these leaves are the orbits of a Lie group, which is the structure group of ${\mathcal J}$, in clear analogy with what happens for coadjoint orbits. However, this time in contrast with the Lie-algebraic case, we prove that not all points in ${\mathcal J}^{*}$ lie on a leaf of the canonical Jordan distribution. When the leaves are contained in the cone of positive linear functionals on ${\mathcal J}$, the pseudo-Riemannian structure becomes Riemannian and, for appropriate choices of ${\mathcal J}$, it coincides with the Fisher-Rao metric on non-normalized probability distributions on a finite sample space, or with the Bures-Helstrom metric for non-normalized, faithful quantum states of a finite-level quantum system, thus showing a direct link between the mathematics of Jordan algebras and both classical and quantum information geometry.
In this paper we introduce the notion of Poincaré DGCAs of Hodge type, which is a subclass of Poincaré DGCAs encompassing the de Rham algebras of closed orientable manifolds. Then we introduce the notion of the small algebra and the small quotient algebra of a Poincaré DGCA of Hodge type. Using these concepts, we investigate the equivalence class of $(r-1)$ connected $(r>1)$ Poincaré DGCAs of Hodge type. In particular, we show that a $(r-1)$ connected Poincaré DGCA of Hodge type ${\mathcal A}^\ast$ of dimension $n \le 5r-3$ is $A_\infty$-quasi-isomorphic to an $A_3$-algebra and prove that the only obstruction to the formality of ${\mathcal A}^\ast$ is a distinguished Harrison cohomology class $[μ_3] \in {\mathsf{Harr}}^{3,-1} (H^*({\mathcal A}^\ast), H^*({\mathcal A}^\ast))$. Moreover, the cohomology class $[μ_3]$ and the DGCA isomorphism class of $H^*({\mathcal A}^\ast)$ determine the $A_\infty$-quasi-isomorphism class of ${\mathcal A}^\ast$. This can be seen as a Harrison cohomology version of the Crowley-Nordström results [D. Crowley, J. Nordström, The rational homotopy type of $(n-1)$-connected manifolds of dimension up to $5n-3$, arXiv:1505.04184v2] on rational homotopy type of $(r-1)$-connected $(r>1)$ closed manifolds of dimension up to $5r-3$. We also derive the almost formality of closed $G_2$-manifolds, which have been discovered recently by Chan-Karigiannis-Tsang in [K.F. Chan, S. Karigiannis and C.C. Tsang, The ${\mathcal L}_B$-cohomology on compact torsion-free ${\rm G}_2$ manifolds and an application to `almost' formality, arXiv:1801.06410, to appear in Ann. Global Anal. Geom.], from our results and the Cheeger-Gromoll splitting theorem.
We introduce the notion of smooth parametric model of normal positive linear functionals on possibly infinite-dimensional W*-algebras generalizing the notions of parametric models used in classical and quantum information geometry. We then use the Jordan product naturally available in this context in order to define a Riemannian metric tensor on parametric models satsfying suitable regularity conditions. This Riemannian metric tensor reduces to the Fisher-Rao metric tensor, or to the Fubini-Study metric tensor, or to the Bures-Helstrom metric tensor when suitable choices for the W*-algebra and the models are made.
A geometrical formulation of estimation theory for finite-dimensional $C^{\star}$-algebras is presented. This formulation allows to deal with the classical and quantum case in a single, unifying mathematical framework. The derivation of the Cramer-Rao and Helstrom bounds for parametric statistical models with discrete and finite outcome spaces is presented.
For an element $Ψ$ in the graded vector space $Ω^*(M, TM)$ of tangent bundle valued forms on a smooth manifold $M$, a $Ψ$-submanifold is defined as a submanifold $N$ of $M$ such that $Ψ_{|N} \in Ω^*(N, TN)$. The class of $Ψ$-submanifolds encompasses calibrated submanifolds, complex submanifolds and all Lie subgroups in compact Lie groups. The graded vector space $Ω^*(M, TM)$ carries a natural graded Lie algebra structure, given by the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket $[-,- ]^{FN}$. When $Ψ$ is an odd degree element with $[ Ψ, Ψ]^{FN} =0$, we associate to a $Ψ$-submanifold $N$ a strongly homotopy Lie algebra, which governs the formal and (under certain assumptions) smooth deformations of $N$ as a $Ψ$-submanifold, and we show that under certain assumptions these deformations form an analytic variety. As an application we revisit formal and smooth deformation theory of complex closed submanifolds and of $φ$-calibrated closed submanifolds, where $φ$ is a parallel form in a real analytic Riemannian manifold.
The Jordan product on the self-adjoint part of a finite-dimensional $C^{*}$-algebra $\mathscr{A}$ is shown to give rise to Riemannian metric tensors on suitable manifolds of states on $\mathscr{A}$, and the covariant derivative, the geodesics, the Riemann tensor, and the sectional curvature of all these metric tensors are explicitly computed. In particular, it is proved that the Fisher--Rao metric tensor is recovered in the Abelian case, that the Fubini--Study metric tensor is recovered when we consider pure states on the algebra $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$ of linear operators on a finite-dimensional Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$, and that the Bures--Helstrom metric tensors is recovered when we consider faithful states on $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$. Moreover, an alternative derivation of these Riemannian metric tensors in terms of the GNS construction associated to a state is presented. In the case of pure and faithful states on $\mathcal{B}(\mathcal{H})$, this alternative geometrical description clarifies the analogy between the Fubini--Study and the Bures--Helstrom metric tensor.
In this paper we show that a parallel differential form $Ψ$ of even degree on a Riemannian manifold allows to define a natural differential both on $Ω^\ast(M)$ and $Ω^\ast(M, TM)$, defined via the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket. For instance, on a Kähler manifold, these operators are the complex differential and the Dolbeault differential, respectively. We investigate this construction when taking the differential w.r.t. the canonical parallel $4$-form on a $G_2$- and ${\rm Spin}(7)$-manifold, respectively. We calculate the cohomology groups of $Ω^\ast(M)$ and give a partial description of the cohomology of $Ω^\ast(M, TM)$.
In this article, we summarize our recent results on the study of manifolds with special holonomy via the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket. This bracket enables us to define the Frölicher-Nijenhuis cohomologies which are analogues of the $d^c$ and the Dolbeault cohomologies in Kähler geometry, and assigns an $L_\infty$-algebra to each associative submanifold. We provide several concrete computations of the Frölicher-Nijenhuis cohomology.
We extend the characterization of the integrability of an almost complex structure $J$ on differentiable manifolds via the vanishing of the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket $[J, J] ^{FN}$ to an analogous characterization of torsion-free $G_2$-structures and torsion-free Spin(7)-structures. We also explain the Fernández-Gray classification of $G_2$-structures and the Fernández classification of Spin(7)-structures in terms of the Frölicher-Nijenhuis bracket.
We introduce the notion of the essential tangent bundle of a parametrized measure model and the notion of reduced Fisher metric on a (possibly singular) 2-integrable measure model. Using these notions and a new characterization of $k$-integrable parametrized measure models, we extend the Cramér-Rao inequality to $2$-integrable (possibly singular) statistical models for general $φ$-estimations, where $φ$ is a $V$-valued feature function and $V$ is a topological vector space. Thus we derive an intrinsic Cramér-Rao inequality in the most general terms of parametric statistics.
We develope a new and general notion of parametric measure models and statistical models on an arbitrary sample space $Ω$ which does not assume that all measures of the model have the same null sets. This is given by a diffferentiable map from the parameter manifold $M$ into the set of finite measures or probability measures on $Ω$, respectively, which is differentiable when regarded as a map into the Banach space of all signed measures on $Ω$. Furthermore, we also give a rigorous definition of roots of measures and give a natural definition of the Fisher metric and the Amari-Chentsov tensor as the pullback of tensors defined on the space of roots of measures. We show that many features such as the preservation of this tensor under sufficient statistics and the monotonicity formula hold even in this very general set-up.
Classical results of Chentsov and Campbell state that -- up to constant multiples -- the only $2$-tensor field of a statistical model which is invariant under congruent Markov morphisms is the Fisher metric and the only invariant $3$-tensor field is the Amari-Chentsov tensor. We generalize this result for arbitrary degree $n$, showing that any family of $n$-tensors which is invariant under congruent Markov morphisms is algebraically generated by the canonical tensor fields defined in an earlier paper.
Lagrangian submanifolds in strict nearly Kähler 6-manifolds are related to special Lagrangian submanifolds in Calabi-Yau 6-manifolds and coassociative cones in $G_2$-manifolds. We prove that the mean curvature of a Lagrangian submanifold $L$ in a nearly Kähler manifold $(M^{2n}, J, g)$ is symplectically dual to the Maslov 1-form on $L$. Using relative calibrations, we derive a formula for the second variation of the volume of a Lagrangian submanifold $L^3$ in a strict nearly Kähler manifold $(M^6, J, g)$. This formula implies, in particular, that any formal infinitesimal Lagrangian deformation of $L^3$ is a Jacobi field on $L^3$. We describe a finite dimensional local model of the moduli space of compact Lagrangian submanifolds in a strict nearly Kähler 6-manifold. We show that there is a real analytic atlas on $(M^6, J, g)$ in which the strict nearly Kähler structure $(J, g)$ is real analytic. Furthermore, w.r.t. an analytic strict nearly Kähler structure the moduli space of Lagrangian submanifolds of $M^6$ is a real analytic variety, whence infinitesimal Lagrangian deformations are smoothly obstructed if and only if they are formally obstructed. As an application, we relate our results to the description of Lagrangian submanifolds in the sphere $S^6$ with the standard nearly Kähler structure described in \cite{Lotay2012}.
Information geometry provides a geometric approach to families of statistical models. The key geometric structures are the Fisher quadratic form and the Amari-Chentsov tensor. In statistics, the notion of sufficient statistic expresses the criterion for passing from one model to another without loss of information. This leads to the question how the geometric structures behave under such sufficient statistics. While this is well studied in the finite sample size case, in the infinite case, we encounter technical problems concerning the appropriate topologies. Here, we introduce notions of parametrized measure models and tensor fields on them that exhibit the right behavior under statistical transformations. Within this framework, we can then handle the topological issues and show that the Fisher metric and the Amari-Chentsov tensor on statistical models in the class of symmetric 2-tensor fields and 3-tensor fields can be uniquely (up to a constant) characterized by their invariance under sufficient statistics, thereby achieving a full generalization of the original result of Chentsov to infinite sample sizes. More generally, we decompose Markov morphisms between statistical models in terms of statistics. In particular, a monotonicity result for the Fisher information naturally follows.
We discuss the Euclidean limit of hyperbolic SU(2)-monopoles, framed at infinity, from the point of view of pluricomplex geometry. More generally, we discuss the geometry of hypercomplex manifolds arising as limits of pluricomplex manifolds.
We construct a canonical linear resolution of acyclic 1-dimensional sheaves on P^1 x P^1 and discuss the resulting natural Poisson structure.
Motivated by strong desire to understand the natural geometry of moduli spaces of hyperbolic monopoles, we introduce and study a new type of geometry: pluricomplex geometry. It is a generalisation of hypercomplex geometry: we still have a 2-sphere of complex structures, but they no longer behave like unit imaginary quaternions. We still require, however, that the 2-sphere of complex structures determines a decomposition of the complexified tangent space as tensor product of C^{2n} and C^2. Among interesting properties of pluricomplex manifold is the existence of a canonical torsion free connection. Pluricomplex manifolds have also remarkable twistor theory: they parameterise algebraic curves of higher genera.
