Characterizing nonlinear information in the linear sampling method for inverse medium scattering

This work is concerned with the nonlinear information in the linear sampling method for the inverse medium scattering problem. In addition to the well-known capability in shape characterization, we demonstrate that the imaging indicator represents nonlinear information about the unknown contrast. We further demonstrate additional representations for this nonlinear information using the generalized linear sampling method. We shed light on this new result using the Born model and analytical examples.

A theoretical and computational framework for three dimensional inverse medium scattering using the linearized low-rank structure

In this work we propose a theoretical and computational framework for solving the three dimensional inverse medium scattering problem, based on a set of data-driven basis arising from the linearized problem. This set of data-driven basis consists of generalizations of prolate spheroidal wave functions to three dimensions (3D PSWFs), the main ingredients to explore a low-rank approximation of the inverse solution. We first establish the fundamentals of the inverse scattering analysis, including regularity in a customized Sobolev space and new a priori estimate. This is followed by a computational framework showcasing computing the 3D PSWFs and the low-rank approximation of the inverse solution. These results rely heavily on the fact that the 3D PSWFs are eigenfunctions of both a restricted Fourier integral operator and a Sturm-Liouville differential operator. Furthermore we propose a Tikhonov regularization method with a customized penalty norm and a localized imaging technique to image a targeting object despite the possible presence of its surroundings. Finally various numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the potential of the proposed method.

Exploring low-rank structure for an inverse scattering problem with far-field data

In this work, we introduce a novel low-rank structure tailored for solving the inverse scattering problem. The particular low-rank structure is given by the generalized prolate spheroidal wave functions, computed stably and accurately via a Sturm-Liouville problem. We first process the far-field data to obtain a post-processed data set within a disk domain. Subsequently, the post-processed data are projected onto a low-rank space given by the low-rank structure. The unknown is approximately solved in this low-rank space, by dropping higher-order terms. The low-rank structure leads to an explicit stability estimate for unknown functions belonging to standard Sobolev spaces, and a Lipschitz stability estimate for unknowns belonging to a finite dimensional low-rank space. Various numerical experiments are conducted to validate its performance, encompassing assessments of resolution capability, robustness against randomly added noise and modeling errors, and demonstration of increasing stability.

Shape and parameter identification by the linear sampling method for a restricted Fourier integral operator

In this paper we provide a new linear sampling method based on the same data but a different definition of the data operator for two inverse problems: the multi-frequency inverse source problem for a fixed observation direction and the Born inverse scattering problems. We show that the associated regularized linear sampling indicator converges to the average of the unknown in a small neighborhood as the regularization parameter approaches to zero. We develop both a shape identification theory and a parameter identification theory which are stimulated, analyzed, and implemented with the help of the prolate spheroidal wave functions and their generalizations. We further propose a prolate-based implementation of the linear sampling method and provide numerical experiments to demonstrate how this linear sampling method is capable of reconstructing both the shape and the parameter.

Qualitative indicator functions for imaging crack networks using acoustic waves

We consider the problem of imaging a crack network embedded in some homogeneous background from measured multi-static far field data generated by acoustic plane waves. We propose two novel approaches that can be seen as extensions of linear sampling-type methods and that provide indicator functions which are sensitive to local cracks densities. The first approach uses multiple frequencies data to compute spectral signatures associated with artificially embedded localized obstacles. The second approach also exploits the idea of incorporating an artificial background but uses data for a single frequency. The indicator function is built using a similar concept as for differential sampling methods: compare the solution of the interior transmission problem for healthy inclusion with the one with embedded cracks. The performance of the methods is tested and discussed on synthetic examples and the numerical results are compared with the ones obtained using the classical factorization method.

Inside-outside duality with artificial backgrounds

We use the inside-outside duality approach proposed by Kirsch-Lechleiter to identify transmission eigenvalues associated with artificial backgrounds. We prove that for well chosen artificial backgrounds, in particular for the ones with zero index of refraction at the inclusion location, one obtains a necessary and sufficient condition characterizing transmission eigenvalues via the spectrum of the modified far field operator. We also complement the existing literature with a convergence result for the invisible generalized incident field associated with the transmission eigenvalues. This work is based on several of the pioneering works of our dearest colleague and friend Armin Lechleiter and is dedicated to his memory.

Transmission eigenvalues with artificial background for explicit material index identification

We are interested in the problem of retrieving information on the refractive index $n$ of a penetrable inclusion embedded in a reference medium from farfield data associated with incident plane waves. Our approach relies on the use of transmission eigenvalues (TEs) that carry information on $n$ and that can be determined from the knowledge of the farfield operator $F$. In this note, we explain how to modify $F$ into a farfield operator $F^{art}=F-\tilde{F}$, where $\tilde{F}$ is computed numerically, corresponding to well chosen artificial background and for which the associated TEs provide more accessible information on $n$.
