Analytical model for the photomultiplier single photoelectron response including the electron back-scattering contribution

Many models exist to describe the single photoelectron response of single photon counting photomultipliers. Generally to describe the spectral region between the fully amplified primary photoelectron peak and the electronics pedestal an ad hoc function is used (often an exponentially modified gaussian) attributing this region to `noise'. In this paper, following the physical description of back-scattered primary photoelectrons at the first dynode described in the "The Photomultiplier Handbook" by A. G. Wright published by Oxford University Press, we derive an analytical function describing these partially amplified primary photoelectron at the first dynode. This function depends only on intrinsic parameters of the photomultiplier such as the gain at the first dynode and the intrinsic resolution of the dynode chain following the first. Furthermore, analytical descriptions of the fully amplified peak and very low charge signals are derived. The model has been successfully validated with data from two different photomultipliers acquired with a low-noise amplifier.

The ASIMOV Prize for scientific publishing -- HEP researchers trigger young people toward science

This work presents the ASIMOV Prize for scientific publishing, which was launched in Italy in 2016. The prize aims to bring the young generations closer to scientific culture, through the critical reading of popular science books. The books are selected by a committee that includes scientists, professors, Ph.D. and Ph.D. students, writers, journalists and friends of culture, and most importantly, over 800 school teachers. Students are actively involved in the prize, according to the best practices of public engagement: they read, review the books and vote for them, choosing the winner. The experience is quite successful: 12,000 students from 270 schools all over Italy participated in the last edition. The possibility of replicating this experience in other countries is indicated, as was done in Brazil in 2020 with more than encouraging results.

Events with Isolated Charged Leptons and Large Missing Transverse Momentum at HERA

Striking events with isolated charged leptons, large missing transverse momentum and large transverse momentum of the hadronic final state were observed at the electron proton collider HERA in a data sample corresponding to a luminosity of about 130 pb-1. The H1 collaboration observed 11 events with isolated electrons or muons and with transverse momentum above 25 GeV. Only 3.4+-0.6 events were expected from Standard Model (SM) processes. Six of these events have a transverse momentum of greater than 40 GeV, while 1.3+-0.3 events were expected. The ZEUS collaboration observed good agreement with the SM. However, ZEUS found two events with a similar event topology, but tau leptons instead of electrons or muons in the final state. Only 0.2+-0.05 events were expected from SM processes. For various hypotheses the compatibility of the experimental results was investigated with respect to the SM and with respect to possible explanations beyond the SM. Prospects for the high-luminosity HERA-II data taking period are given.
