Large deviation principles for nongradient weakly asymmetric stochastic lattice gases

We consider a lattice gas on the discrete d-dimensional torus $(\mathbb{Z}/N\mathbb{Z})^d$ with a generic translation invariant, finite range interaction satisfying a uniform strong mixing condition. The lattice gas performs a Kawasaki dynamics in the presence of a weak external field E/N. We show that, under diffusive rescaling, the hydrodynamic behavior of the lattice gas is described by a nonlinear driven diffusion equation. We then prove the associated dynamical large deviation principle. Under suitable assumptions on the external field (e.g., E constant), we finally analyze the variational problem defining the quasi-potential and characterize the optimal exit trajectory. From these results we deduce the asymptotic behavior of the stationary measures of the stochastic lattice gas, which are not explicitly known. In particular, when the external field E is constant, we prove a stationary large deviation principle for the empirical density and show that the rate function does not depend on E.

Synchronization and random long time dynamics for mean-field plane rotators

We consider the natural Langevin dynamics which is reversible with respect to the mean-field plane rotator (or classical spin XY) measure. It is well known that this model exhibits a phase transition at a critical value of the interaction strength parameter K, in the limit of the number N of rotators going to infinity. A Fokker-Planck PDE captures the evolution of the empirical measure of the system as N goes to infinity, at least for finite times and when the empirical measure of the system at time zero satisfies a law of large numbers. The phase transition is reflected in the fact that the PDE for K above the critical value has a stable manifold of stationary solutions, that are equivalent up to rotations. These stationary solutions are actually unimodal densities parametrized by the position of their maximum (the synchronization phase or center). We characterize the dynamics on times of order N and we show substantial deviations from the behavior of the solutions of the PDE. In fact, if the empirical measure at time zero converges as N goes to infinity to a probability measure (which is away from a thin set that we characterize) and if time is speeded up by N, the empirical measure reaches almost instantaneously a small neighborhood of the stable manifold, to which it then sticks and on which a non-trivial random dynamics takes place. In fact the synchronization center performs a Brownian motion with a diffusion coefficient that we compute. Our approach therefore provides, for one of the basic statistical mechanics systems with continuum symmetry, a detailed characterization of the macroscopic deviations from the large scale limit -- or law of large numbers -- due to finite size effects. But the interest for this model goes beyond statistical mechanics, since it plays a central role in a variety of scientific domains in which one aims at understanding synchronization phenomena.

Convergence of the one-dimensional Cahn-Hilliard equation

We consider the Cahn-Hilliard equation in one space dimension with scaling a small parameter εand a non-convex potential W. In the limit \espilon \to 0, under the assumption that the initial data are energetically well-prepared, we show the convergence to a Stefan problem. The proof is based on variational methods and exploits the gradient flow structure of the Cahn-Hilliard equation.

A variational approach to the stationary solutions of Burgers equation

Consider the viscous Burgers equation on a bounded interval with inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. Following the variational framework introduced by Bertini-De Sole-Gabrielli-Jona-Lasinio-Landim C, we analyze a Lyapunov functional for such equation which gives the large deviations asymptotics of a stochastic interacting particles model associated to the Burgers equation. We discuss the asymptotic behavior of this energy functional, whose minimizer is given by the unique stationary solution, as the length of the interval diverges. We focus on boundary data corresponding to a standing wave solution to the Burgers equation in the whole line. In this case, the limiting functional has in fact a one-parameter family of minimizers and we analyze the so-called development by Gamma-convergence; this amounts to compute the sharp asymptotic cost corresponding to a given shift of the stationary solution.

Small noise asymptotic of the Gallavotti-Cohen functional for diffusion processes

We consider, for a diffusion process in R^n, the Gallavotti-Cohen functional, defined as the empirical power dissipated in a time interval by the non-conservative part of the drift. We prove a large deviation principle in the limit in which the noise vanishes and the time interval diverges. The corresponding rate functional, which satisfies the fluctuation theorem, is expressed in terms of a variational problem on the classical Freidlin-Wentzell functional.

Action functional and quasi-potential for the Burgers equation in a bounded interval

Consider the viscous Burgers equation $u_t + f(u)_x = ε\, u_{xx}$ on the interval $[0,1]$ with the inhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions $u(t,0) = ρ_0$, $u(t,1) = ρ_1$. The flux $f$ is the function $f(u)= u(1-u)$, $ε>0$ is the viscosity, and the boundary data satisfy $0<ρ_0<ρ_1<1$. We examine the quasi-potential corresponding to an action functional, arising from non-equilibrium statistical mechanical models, associated to the above equation. We provide a static variational formula for the quasi-potential and characterize the optimal paths for the dynamical problem. In contrast with previous cases, for small enough viscosity, the variational problem defining the quasi potential admits more than one minimizer. This phenomenon is interpreted as a non-equilibrium phase transition and corresponds to points where the super-differential of the quasi-potential is not a singleton.

Dynamical large deviations for the boundary driven weakly asymmetric exclusion process

We consider the weakly asymmetric exclusion process on a bounded interval with particle reservoirs at the endpoints. The hydrodynamic limit for the empirical density, obtained in the diffusive scaling, is given by the viscous Burgers equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove the associated dynamical large deviations principle.

Dynamical aspects of mean field plane rotators and the Kuramoto model

The Kuramoto model has been introduced in order to describe synchronization phenomena observed in groups of cells, individuals, circuits, etc... We look at the Kuramoto model with white noise forces: in mathematical terms it is a set of N oscillators, each driven by an independent Brownian motion with a constant drift, that is each oscillator has its own frequency, which, in general, changes from one oscillator to another (these frequencies are usually taken to be random and they may be viewed as a quenched disorder). The interactions between oscillators are of long range type (mean field). We review some results on the Kuramoto model from a statistical mechanics standpoint: we give in particular necessary and sufficient conditions for reversibility and we point out a formal analogy, in the N to infinity limit, with local mean field models with conservative dynamics (an analogy that is exploited to identify in particular a Lyapunov functional in the reversible set-up). We then focus on the reversible Kuramoto model with sinusoidal interactions in the N to infinity limit and analyze the stability of the non-trivial stationary profiles arising when the interaction parameter K is larger than its critical value K_c. We provide an analysis of the linear operator describing the time evolution in a neighborhood of the synchronized profile: we exhibit a Hilbert space in which this operator has a self-adjoint extension and we establish, as our main result, a spectral gap inequality for every K>K_c.

Gamma-entropy cost for scalar conservation laws

We are concerned with a control problem related to the vanishing viscosity approximation to scalar conservation laws. We investigate the $Γ$-convergence of the control cost functional, as the viscosity coefficient tends to zero. A first order $Γ$-limit is established, which characterizes the measure-valued solutions to the conservation laws as the zeros of the $Γ$-limit. A second order $Γ$-limit is then investigated, providing a characterization of entropic solutions to conservation laws as the zeros of the $Γ$-limit.

Strong asymmetric limit of the quasi-potential of the boundary driven weakly asymmetric exclusion process

We consider the weakly asymmetric exclusion process on a bounded interval with particles reservoirs at the endpoints. The hydrodynamic limit for the empirical density, obtained in the diffusive scaling, is given by the viscous Burgers equation with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the case in which the bulk asymmetry is in the same direction as the drift due to the boundary reservoirs, we prove that the quasi-potential can be expressed in terms of the solution to a one-dimensional boundary value problem which has been introduced by Enaud and Derrida \cite{de}. We consider the strong asymmetric limit of the quasi-potential and recover the functional derived by Derrida, Lebowitz, and Speer \cite{DLS3} for the asymmetric exclusion process.

Large deviations for a stochastic model of heat flow

We investigate a one dimensional chain of $2N$ harmonic oscillators in which neighboring sites have their energies redistributed randomly. The sites $-N$ and $N$ are in contact with thermal reservoirs at different temperature $τ_-$ and $τ_+$. Kipnis, Marchioro, and Presutti \cite{KMP} proved that this model satisfies {}Fourier's law and that in the hydrodynamical scaling limit, when $N \to \infty$, the stationary state has a linear energy density profile $\bar θ(u)$, $u \in [-1,1]$. We derive the large deviation function $S(θ(u))$ for the probability of finding, in the stationary state, a profile $θ(u)$ different from $\bar θ(u)$. The function $S(θ)$ has striking similarities to, but also large differences from, the corresponding one of the symmetric exclusion process. Like the latter it is nonlocal and satisfies a variational equation. Unlike the latter it is not convex and the Gaussian normal fluctuations are enhanced rather than suppressed compared to the local equilibrium state. We also briefly discuss more general model and find the features common in these two and other models whose $S(θ)$ is known.
