On the sharp Hardy inequality in Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces

We study the sharp constant in the Hardy inequality for fractional Sobolev spaces defined on open subsets of the Euclidean space. We first list some properties of such a constant, as well as of the associated variational problem. We then restrict the discussion to open convex sets and compute such a sharp constant, by constructing suitable supersolutions by means of the distance function. Such a method of proof works only for $s\,p\ge 1$ or for $Ω$ being a half-space. We exhibit a simple example suggesting that this method can not work for $s\,p<1$ and $Ω$ different from a half-space. The case $s\,p<1$ for a generic convex set is left as an interesting open problem, except in the Hilbertian setting (i.e. for $p=2$): in this case we can compute the sharp constant in the whole range $0<s<1$. This completes a result which was left open in the literature.

A Steklov version of the Torsional Rigidity

Motivated by the connection between the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian and the torsional rigidity, the aim of this paper is to find a physically coherent and mathematically interesting new concept for boundary torsional rigidity, closely related to the Steklov eigenvalue. From a variational point of view, such a new object corresponds to the sharp constant for the trace embedding of $W^{1,2}(Ω)$ into $L^1(\partialΩ)$. We obtain various equivalent variational formulations, present some properties of the state function and obtain some sharp geometric estimates, both for planar simply connected sets and for convex sets in any dimension.

Stability of variational eigenvalues for the fractional p-Laplacian

By virtue of $Γ-$convergence arguments, we investigate the stability of variational eigenvalues associated with a given topological index for the fractional $p$-Laplacian operator, in the singular limit as the nonlocal operator converges to the $p$-Laplacian. We also obtain the convergence of the corresponding normalized eigenfunctions in a suitable fractional norm.

A comparison principle for the Lane-Emden equation and applications to geometric estimates

We prove a comparison principle for positive supersolutions and subsolutions to the Lane-Emden equation for the $p-$Laplacian, with subhomogeneous power in the right-hand side. The proof uses variational tools and the result applies with no regularity assumptions, both on the set and the functions. We then show that such a comparison principle can be applied to prove: uniqueness of solutions; sharp pointwise estimates for positive solutions in convex sets; localization estimates for maximum points and sharp geometric estimates for generalized principal frequencies in convex sets.

The fractional Makai-Hayman inequality

We prove that the first eigenvalue of the fractional Dirichlet-Laplacian of order $s$ on a simply connected set of the plane can be bounded from below in terms of its inradius only. This is valid for $1/2<s<1$ and we show that this condition is sharp, i.\,e. for $0<s\le 1/2$ such a lower bound is not possible. The constant appearing in the estimate has the correct asymptotic behaviour with respect to $s$, as it permits to recover a classical result by Makai and Hayman in the limit $s\nearrow 1$. The paper is as self-contained as possible.

Long-time behavior for the porous medium equation with small initial energy

We study the long-time behavior for the solution of the Porous Medium Equation in an open bounded connected set, with smooth boundary. Homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions are considered. We prove that if the initial datum has sufficiently small energy, then the solution converges to a nontrivial constant sign solution of a sublinear Lane-Emden equation, once suitably rescaled. We point out that the initial datum is allowed to be sign-changing. We also give a sufficient energetic criterion on the initial datum, which permits to decide whether convergence takes place towards the positive solution or to the negative one.

Convex duality for principal frequencies

We consider the sharp Sobolev-Poincaré constant for the embedding of $W^{1,2}_0(Ω)$ into $L^q(Ω)$. We show that such a constant exhibits an unexpected dual variational formulation, in the range $1<q<2$. Namely, this can be written as a convex minimization problem, under a divergence--type constraint. This is particularly useful in order to prove lower bounds. The result generalizes what happens for the torsional rigidity (corresponding to $q=1$) and extends up to the case of the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian (i.e. to $q=2$).

Characterisation of homogeneous fractional Sobolev spaces

Our aim is to characterize the homogeneous fractional Sobolev-Slobodecki\uı spaces $\mathcal{D}^{s,p} (\mathbb{R}^n)$ and their embeddings, for $s \in (0,1]$ and $p\ge 1$. They are defined as the completion of the set of smooth and compactly supported test functions with respect to the Gagliardo-Slobodecki\uı seminorms. For $s\,p < n$ or $s = p = n = 1$ we show that $\mathcal{D}^{s,p}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ is isomorphic to a suitable function space, whereas for $s\,p \ge n$ it is isomorphic to a space of equivalence classes of functions, differing by an additive constant. As one of our main tools, we present a Morrey-Campanato inequality where the Gagliardo-Slobodecki\uı seminorm controls from above a suitable Campanato seminorm.

A quantitative stability estimate for the fractional Faber-Krahn inequality

We prove a quantitative version of the Faber-Krahn inequality for the first eigenvalue of the fractional Dirichlet-Laplacian of order s. This is done by using the so-called Caffarelli-Silvestre extension and adapting to the nonlocal setting a trick by Hansen and Nadirashvili. The relevant stability estimate comes with an explicit constant, which is stable as the fractional order of differentiability goes to 1.

On principal frequencies, volume and inradius in convex sets

We provide a sharp double-sided estimate for Poincaré-Sobolev constants on a convex set, in terms of its inradius and $N-$dimensional measure. Our results extend and unify previous works by Hersch and Protter (for the first eigenvalue) and of Makai, Pólya and Szegő (for the torsional rigidity), by means of a single proof.

Positive solutions to the sublinear Lane-Emden equation are isolated

We prove that on a smooth bounded set, the positive least energy solution of the Lane-Emden equation with sublinear power is isolated. As a corollary, we obtain that the first $q-$eigenvalue of the Dirichlet-Laplacian is not an accumulation point of the $q-$spectrum, on a smooth bounded set. Our results extend to a suitable class of Lipschitz domains, as well.

An overview on constrained critical points of Dirichlet integrals

We consider a natural generalization of the eigenvalue problem for the Laplacian with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. This corresponds to look for the critical values of the Dirichlet integral, constrained to the unit $L^q$ sphere. We collect some results, present some counter-examples and compile a list of open problems.

Continuity of solutions to a nonlinear fractional diffusion equation

We study a parabolic equation for the fractional $p-$Laplacian of order $s$, for $p\ge 2$ and $0<s<1$. We provide space-time Hölder estimates for weak solutions, with explicit exponents. The proofs are based on iterated discrete differentiation of the equation in the spirit of J. Moser.

On principal frequencies and isoperimetric ratios in convex sets

On a convex set, we prove that the Poincaré-Sobolev constant for functions vanishing at the boundary can be bounded from above by the ratio between the perimeter and a suitable power of the $N-$dimensional measure. This generalizes an old result by Pólya. As a consequence, we obtain the sharp {\it Buser's inequality} (or reverse Cheeger inequality) for the $p-$Laplacian on convex sets. This is valid in every dimension and for every $1<p<+\infty$. We also highlight the appearing of a subtle phenomenon in shape optimization, as the integrability exponent varies.

On principal frequencies and inradius in convex sets

We generalize to the case of the $p-$Laplacian an old result by Hersch and Protter. Namely, we show that it is possible to estimate from below the first eigenvalue of the Dirichlet $p-$Laplacian of a convex set in terms of its inradius. We also prove a lower bound in terms of isoperimetric ratios and we briefly discuss the more general case of Poincaré-Sobolev embedding constants. Eventually, we highlight an open problem.
