A Unitary Fixed Point Away from Threshold: Momentum-Surface EFT for Strong Mixing

Radiative capture in a non-relativistic system can become non-perturbative even when the underlying transition interaction is weak. We demonstrate this mechanism in a simple quantum-mechanical two-channel model with a systematic power counting, where strong mixing between scattering and bound states develops in a narrow region around a finite momentum $k_0$, leading to a perturbative violation of unitarity. In this regime, the enhanced contributions factorize, reducing the dynamics to a free scattering state interacting through a strong local coupling. Under RG evolution in the factorization scale, this local interaction approaches a unitary fixed point, analogous to that of systems with an anomalously large scattering length. This motivates an EFT organized around the finite-momentum surface $|\mathbf{k}|=k_0$, describing fermions at unitarity with a linear dispersion relation. The resummation resulting from the EFT restores unitarity and provides a systematic expansion for both elastic scattering and radiative capture.

Threshold resummation of rapidity distributions at fixed partonic rapidity

We derive a general expression for the resummation of rapidity distributions for processes with a colorless final state, such as Drell-Yan or Higgs production, in the limit in which the center-of-mass energy goes on threshold, but with fixed rapidity of the Higgs or gauge boson in the partonic center-of-mass frame. The result is obtained by suitably generalizing the renormalization-group based approach to threshold resummation previously pursued by us. The ensuing expression is valid to all logarithmic orders but the resummation coefficients must be determined by comparing to fixed order results. We perform this comparison for the Drell-Yan process using the fixed-order next-to-next-to-leading (NNLO) result, thereby determining resummation coefficients up to next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (NNLL) accuracy, for the quark-antiquark coefficient function in the quark nonsinglet channel. We provide a translation to direct QCD of a result for this resummation previously obtained using SCET methods, and we show that it agrees with our own.

Enhancement of $p$-wave dark matter annihilation by quasi-bound states

We scrutinize the Sommerfeld enhancement in dark matter pair annihilation for $p$-wave and higher-$\ell$ partial waves. For the Yukawa potential these feature a super-resonant Breit-Wigner peak in their velocity-dependence close to Sommerfeld resonances as well as a universal scaling with velocity for all $\ell\geq 1$ that differs from the $s$-wave case. We provide a quantum mechanical explanation for these phenomena in terms of quasi-bound states sustained by the centrifugal barrier of the partial-wave potential, and give approximate WKB expressions capturing the main effects. The impact of quasi-bound states is exemplified for wino dark matter and models with light mediators, with a focus on indirect detection signals. We note that quasi-bound states can also explain similar peaks in the bound-state formation and self-scattering cross sections.
