Scalar QED in AdS

We consider scalar QED with $N_f$ flavors in AdS$_D$. For $D<4$ the theory is strongly-coupled in the IR. We use the spin 1 spectral representation to compute and efficiently resum the bubble diagram in AdS, in order to obtain the exact propagator of the photon at large $N_f$. We then apply this result to compute the boundary four-point function of the charged operators at leading order in $1/N_f$ and exactly in the coupling, both in the Coulomb and in the Higgs phase. In the first case a conserved current is exchanged in the four-point function, while in the second case the current is absent and there is a pattern of double-trace scaling dimension analogous to a resonance in flat space. We also consider the BCFT data associated to the critical point with bulk conformal symmetry separating the two phases. Both in ordinary perturbation theory and at large $N_f$, in integer dimension $D= 3$ an IR divergence breaks the conformal symmetry on the boundary by inducing a boundary RG flow in a current-current operator.

Free Energy on the Sphere for Non-Abelian Gauge Theories

We compute the $S^d$ partition function of the fixed point of non-abelian gauge theories in continuous $d$, using the $ε$-expansion around $d=4$. We illustrate in detail the technical aspects of the calculation, including all the factors arising from the gauge-fixing procedure, and the method to deal with the zero-modes of the ghosts. We obtain the result up to NLO, i.e. including two-loop vacuum diagrams. Depending on the sign of the one-loop beta function, there is a fixed point with real gauge coupling in $d>4$ or $d<4$. In the first case we extrapolate to $d=5$ to test a recently proposed construction of the UV fixed point of $5d$ $SU(2)$ Yang-Mills via a susy-breaking deformation of the $E_1$ SCFT. We find that the $F$ theorem allows the proposed RG flow. In the second case we extrapolate to $d=3$ to test whether QCD$_3$ with gauge group $SU(n_c)$ and $n_f$ fundamental matter fields flows to a CFT or to a symmetry-breaking phase. We find that within the regime with a real gauge coupling near $d=4$ the CFT phase is always favored. For lower values of $n_f$ we compare the average of $F$ between the two complex fixed points with its value at the symmetry-breaking phase to give an upper bound of the critical value $n_f^*$ below which the symmetry-breaking phase takes over.

On the Inhomogeneous Phase of the Chiral Gross-Neveu Model

There is substantial evidence that the ground state of the 2d chiral Gross-Neveu model, in the presence of a $U(1)$ fermion number chemical potential $μ$ and in the large $N$ limit, is given by a {\it chiral spiral} phase, namely an inhomogeneous phase with a chiral condensate having a spatially periodic phase. We show that the chiral spiral configuration persists at finite $N$ and $T=0$ for any $μ>0$. Our analysis is based on non-abelian bosonization, that relates the model to a $U(N)_1$ WZW model deformed by current-current interactions. In this description the appearance of the inhomogeneous phase is surprisingly simple. We also rederive the phase diagram of the large $N$ chiral Gross-Neveu model via a direct diagrammatic computation, finding agreement with previous results in the literature.

Factorization and global symmetries in holography

We consider toy models of holography arising from 3d Chern-Simons theory. In this context a duality to an ensemble average over 2d CFTs has been recently proposed. We put forward an alternative approach in which, rather than summing over bulk geometries, one gauges a one-form global symmetry of the bulk theory. This accomplishes two tasks: it ensures that the bulk theory has no global symmetries, as expected for a theory of quantum gravity, and it makes the partition function on spacetimes with boundaries coincide with that of a modular-invariant 2d CFT on the boundary. In particular, on wormhole geometries one finds a factorized answer for the partition function. In the case of non-Abelian Chern-Simons theories, the relevant one-form symmetry is non-invertible, and its gauging corresponds to the condensation of a Lagrangian anyon.

Bootstrapping boundary-localized interactions II: Minimal models at the boundary

We provide evidence for the existence of non-trivial unitary conformal boundary conditions for a three-dimensional free scalar field, which can be obtained via a coupling to the m'th unitary diagonal minimal model. For large m we can demonstrate the existence of the fixed point perturbatively, and for smaller values we use the numerical conformal bootstrap to obtain a sharp kink that smoothly matches onto the perturbative predictions. The wider numerical analysis also yields universal bounds for the spectrum of any other boundary condition for the free scalar field. A second kink in these bounds hints at a second class of non-standard boundary conditions, as yet unidentified.

Resurgence and $1/N$ Expansion in Integrable Field Theories

In theories with renormalons the perturbative series is factorially divergent even after restricting to a given order in $1/N$, making the $1/N$ expansion a natural testing ground for the theory of resurgence. We study in detail the interplay between resurgent properties and the $1/N$ expansion in various integrable field theories with renormalons. We focus on the free energy in the presence of a chemical potential coupled to a conserved charge, which can be computed exactly with the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz (TBA). In some examples, like the first $1/N$ correction to the free energy in the non-linear sigma model, the terms in the $1/N$ expansion can be fully decoded in terms of a resurgent trans-series in the coupling constant. In the principal chiral field we find a new, explicit solution for the large $N$ free energy which can be written as the median resummation of a trans-series with infinitely many, analytically computable IR renormalon corrections. However, in other examples, like the Gross-Neveu model, each term in the $1/N$ expansion includes non-perturbative corrections which can not be predicted by a resurgent analysis of the corresponding perturbative series. We also study the properties of the series in $1/N$. In the Gross-Neveu model, where this is convergent, we analytically continue the series beyond its radius of convergence and show how the continuation matches with known dualities with sine-Gordon theories.

3d Large $N$ Vector Models at the Boundary

We consider a 4d scalar field coupled to large $N$ free or critical $O(N)$ vector models, either bosonic or fermionic, on a 3d boundary. We compute the $β$ function of the classically marginal bulk/boundary interaction at the first non-trivial order in the large $N$ expansion and exactly in the coupling. Starting with the free (critical) vector model at weak coupling, we find a fixed point at infinite coupling in which the boundary theory is the critical (free) vector model and the bulk decouples. We show that a strong/weak duality relates one description of the renormalization group flow to another one in which the free and the critical vector models are exchanged. We then consider the theory with an additional Maxwell field in the bulk, which also gives decoupling limits with gauged vector models on the boundary.

Renormalization of Galilean Electrodynamics

We study the quantum properties of a Galilean-invariant abelian gauge theory coupled to a Schrödinger scalar in 2+1 dimensions. At the classical level, the theory with minimal coupling is obtained from a null-reduction of relativistic Maxwell theory coupled to a complex scalar field in 3+1 dimensions and is closely related to the Galilean electromagnetism of Le-Bellac and Lévy-Leblond. Due to the presence of a dimensionless, gauge-invariant scalar field in the Galilean multiplet of the gauge-field, we find that at the quantum level an infinite number of couplings is generated. We explain how to handle the quantum corrections systematically using the background field method. Due to a non-renormalization theorem, the beta function of the gauge coupling is found to vanish to all orders in perturbation theory, leading to a continuous family of fixed points where the non-relativistic conformal symmetry is preserved.

Bootstrapping boundary-localized interactions

We study conformal boundary conditions for the theory of a single real scalar to investigate whether the known Dirichlet and Neumann conditions are the only possibilities. For this free bulk theory there are strong restrictions on the possible boundary dynamics. In particular, we find that the bulk-to-boundary operator expansion of the bulk field involves at most a `shadow pair' of boundary fields, irrespective of the conformal boundary condition. We numerically analyze the four-point crossing equations for this shadow pair in the case of a three-dimensional boundary (so a four-dimensional scalar field) and find that large ranges of parameter space are excluded. However a `kink' in the numerical bounds obeys all our consistency checks and might be an indication of a new conformal boundary condition.

't Hooft anomalies and the holomorphy of supersymmetric partition functions

We study the dependence of supersymmetric partition functions on continuous parameters for the flavor symmetry group, $G_F$, for 2d $\mathcal{N} = (0,2)$ and 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric quantum field theories. In any diffeomorphism-invariant scheme and in the presence of $G_F$ 't Hooft anomalies, the supersymmetric Ward identities imply that the partition function has a non-holomorphic dependence on the flavor parameters. We show this explicitly for the 2d torus partition function, $Z_{T^2}$, and for a large class of 4d partition functions on half-BPS four-manifolds, $Z_{\mathcal{M}_4}$---in particular, for $\mathcal{M}_4=S^3 \times S^1$ and $\mathcal{M}_4=Σ_g \times T^2$. We propose a new expression for $Z_{\mathcal{M}_{d-1} \times S^1}$, which differs from earlier holomorphic results by the introduction of a non-holomorphic `Casimir' pre-factor. The latter is fixed by studying the `high temperature' limit of the partition function. Our proposal agrees with the supersymmetric Ward identities, and with explicit calculations of the absolute value of the partition function using a gauge-invariant zeta-function regularization.

3d Abelian Gauge Theories at the Boundary

A four-dimensional Abelian gauge field can be coupled to a 3d CFT with a $U(1)$ symmetry living on a boundary. This coupling gives rise to a continuous family of boundary conformal field theories (BCFT) parametrized by the gauge coupling $τ$ in the upper-half plane and by the choice of the CFT in the decoupling limit $τ\to \infty$. Upon performing an $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ transformation in the bulk and going to the decoupling limit in the new frame, one finds a different 3d CFT on the boundary, related to the original one by Witten's $SL(2, \mathbb{Z})$ action [1]. In particular the cusps on the real $τ$ axis correspond to the 3d gauging of the original CFT. We study general properties of this BCFT. We show how to express bulk one and two-point functions, and the hemisphere free-energy, in terms of the two-point functions of the boundary electric and magnetic currents. We then consider the case in which the 3d CFT is one Dirac fermion. Thanks to 3d dualities this BCFT is mapped to itself by a bulk $S$ transformation, and it also admits a decoupling limit which gives the $O(2)$ model on the boundary. We compute scaling dimensions of boundary operators and the hemisphere free-energy up to two loops. Using an $S$-duality improved ansatz, we extrapolate the perturbative results and find good approximations to the observables of the $O(2)$ model. We also consider examples with other theories on the boundary, such as large-$N_f$ Dirac fermions --for which the extrapolation to strong coupling can be done exactly order-by-order in $1/N_f$-- and a free complex scalar.

A Study of Quantum Field Theories in AdS at Finite Coupling

We study the $O(N)$ and Gross-Neveu models at large $N$ on AdS$_{d+1}$ background. Thanks to the isometries of AdS, the observables in these theories are constrained by the SO$(d,2)$ conformal group even in the presence of mass deformations, as was discussed by Callan and Wilczek, and provide an interesting two-parameter family of quantities which interpolate between the S-matrices in flat space and the correlators in CFT with a boundary. For the actual computation, we judiciously use the spectral representation to resum loop diagrams in the bulk. After the resummation, the AdS $4$-particle scattering amplitude is given in terms of a single unknown function of the spectral parameter. We then "bootstrap" the unknown function by requiring the absence of double-trace operators in the boundary OPE. Our results are at leading nontrivial order in $\frac{1}{N}$, and include the full dependence on the quartic coupling, the mass parameters, and the AdS radius. In the bosonic $O(N)$ model we study both the massive phase and the symmetry-breaking phase, which exists even in AdS$_2$ evading Coleman's theorem, and identify the AdS analogue of a resonance in flat space. We then propose that symmetry breaking in AdS implies the existence of a conformal manifold in the boundary conformal theory. We also provide evidence for the existence of a critical point with bulk conformal symmetry, matching existing results and finding new ones for the conformal boundary conditions of the critical theories. For the Gross-Neveu model we find a bound state, which interpolates between the familiar bound state in flat space and the displacement operator at the critical point.

Scaling dimensions in QED$_3$ from the $ε$-expansion

We study the fixed point that controls the IR dynamics of QED in $d = 4 - 2ε$. We derive the scaling dimensions of four-fermion and bilinear operators beyond leading order in $ε$-expansion. For the four-fermion operators, this requires the computation of a two-loop mixing that was not known before. We then extrapolate these scaling dimensions to $d = 3$ to estimate their value at the IR fixed point of QED$_3$ as function of the number of fermions $N_f$. The next-to-leading order result for the four-fermion operators corrects significantly the leading one. Our best estimate at this order indicates that they do not cross marginality for any value of $N_f$, which would imply that they cannot trigger a departure from the conformal phase. For the scaling dimensions of bilinear operators, we observe better convergence as we increase the order. In particular, $ε$-expansion provides a convincing estimate for the dimension of the flavor-singlet scalar in the full range of $N_f$.

Operator mixing in $\boldsymbolε$-expansion: scheme and evanescent (in)dependence

We consider theories with fermionic degrees of freedom that have a fixed point of Wilson-Fisher type in non-integer dimension $d = 4-2ε$. Due to the presence of evanescent operators, i.e., operators that vanish in integer dimensions, these theories contain families of infinitely many operators that can mix with each other under renormalization. We clarify the dependence of the corresponding anomalous-dimension matrix on the choice of renormalization scheme beyond leading order in $ε$-expansion. In standard choices of scheme, we find that eigenvalues at the fixed point cannot be extracted from a finite-dimensional block. We illustrate in examples a truncation approach to compute the eigenvalues. These are observable scaling dimensions, and, indeed, we find that the dependence on the choice of scheme cancels. As an application, we obtain the IR scaling dimension of four-fermion operators in QED in $d=4-2ε$ at order $\mathcal{O}(ε^2)$.

Cardy Formula for 4d SUSY Theories and Localization

We study 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric theories on a compact Euclidean manifold of the form $S^1 \times\mathcal{M}_3$. Partition functions of gauge theories on this background can be computed using localization, and explicit formulas have been derived for different choices of the compact manifold $\mathcal{M}_3$. Taking the limit of shrinking $S^1$, we present a general formula for the limit of the localization integrand, derived by simple effective theory considerations, generalizing the result of arXiv:1512.03376. The limit is given in terms of an effective potential for the holonomies around the $S^1$, whose minima determine the asymptotic behavior of the partition function. If the potential is minimized in the origin, where it vanishes, the partition function has a Cardy-like behavior fixed by $\mathrm{Tr}(R)$, while a nontrivial minimum gives a shift in the coefficient. In all the examples that we consider, the origin is a minimum if $\mathrm{Tr}(R) \leq 0$.

Scalar Multiplet Recombination at Large N and Holography

We consider the coupling of a free scalar to a single-trace operator of a large N CFT in d dimensions. This is equivalent to a double-trace deformation coupling two primary operators of the CFT, in the limit when one of the two saturates the unitarity bound. At leading order, the RG-flow has a non-trivial fixed point where multiplets recombine. We show this phenomenon in field theory, and provide the holographic dual description. Free scalars correspond to singleton representations of the AdS algebra. The double-trace interaction is mapped to a boundary condition mixing the singleton with the bulk field dual to the single-trace operator. In the IR, the singleton and the bulk scalar merge, providing just one long representation of the AdS algebra.

On Supersymmetry, Boundary Actions and Brane Charges

Supersymmetry transformations change the Lagrangian $\mathscr{L}$ into a total derivative $δ\mathscr{L} = \partial_μ\mathcal{V}^μ$. On manifolds with boundaries the total derivative term is an obstruction to preserving supersymmetry. Such total derivative terms can be canceled by a boundary action without specifying boundary conditions, but only for a subalgebra of supersymmetry. We study compensating boundary actions for $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetry in 4d, and show that they are determined independently of the details of the theory and of the boundary conditions. Two distinct classes of boundary actions exist, which correspond to preserving either a linear combination of supercharges of opposite chirality (called A-type) or supercharges of opposite chirality independently (B-type). The first option preserves a subalgebra isomorphic to $\mathcal{N} = 1$ in 3d, while the second preserves only a 2d subgroup of the Lorentz symmetry and a subalgebra isomorphic to $\mathcal{N} = (0,2)$ in 2d. These subalgebras are in one to one correspondence with half-BPS objects: the A-type corresponds to domain walls while the B-type corresponds to strings. We show that integrating the full current algebra and taking into account boundary contributions leads to an energy-momentum tensor which contains the boundary terms. The boundary terms come from the domain wall and string currents in the two respective cases.

Quantum Electrodynamics in d=3 from the epsilon-expansion

We study Quantum Electrodynamics in d=3 (QED_3) coupled to N_f flavors of fermions. The theory flows to an IR fixed point for N_f larger than some critical number N_f^c. For N_f<= N_f^c, chiral-symmetry breaking is believed to take place. In analogy with the Wilson-Fisher description of the critical O(N) models in d=3, we make use of the existence of a perturbative fixed point in d=4-2epsilon to study the three-dimensional conformal theory. We compute in perturbation theory the IR dimensions of fermion bilinear and quadrilinear operators. For small N_f, a quadrilinear operator can become relevant in the IR and destabilize the fixed point. Therefore, the epsilon-expansion can be used to estimate N_f^c. An interesting novelty compared to the O(N) models is that the theory in d=3 has an enhanced symmetry due to the structure of 3d spinors. We identify the operators in d=4-2epsilon that correspond to the additional conserved currents at d=3 and compute their infrared dimensions.
