Unstable free boundary problems in optimal control theory: existence and regularity

We establish the first general regularity result for constrained optimal control problems arising naturally in mathematical physics and mathematical biology. Namely, we prove that for a large class of problems of the form ``maximise $\int ψ(Θ_m)-c\int m$ where $-ΔΘ_m=mΘ_m+B(x,Θ_m)$, under the constraint $0\leq m\leq 1$ a.e.", the solution $m^*$ is bang-bang, in the sense that $m^*=χ_{E^*}$, and that $\partial E^*$ is smooth up to a $(d-2)$-dimensional subset. Moreover, we prove that the solutions to the volume constrained problem ``maximise $\int ψ(Θ_m)$ where $-ΔΘ_m=mΘ_m+B(x,Θ_m)$, under the constraint $0\leq m\leq 1$ a.e and $\int m=m_0$" are bang-bang in the sense that $m^*=χ_{E^*}$ and that, in the two-dimensional case, $\partial E^*$ is a finite union of smooth curves. This is done via reduction to an unstable free boundary problem, the regularity analysis of which was pioneered by Monneau \& Weiss and Chanillo, Kenig \& To. In our case, the free boundary is not minimising, and the laplacian of the state function is sign-changing, which creates significant difficulties, in particular regarding the non-degeneracy of blow-ups. This requires a new approach blending tools from optimal control theory, free boundary and measure theory to establish the regularity of the free boundary.

Fine structure of the two-phase Bernoulli free boundaries in 2D

We prove that the branching set of a solution to a two-dimensional two-phase Bernoulli problem with constant coefficients is locally finite. We do this via a Weierstrass representation formula, which allows to transform the problem into a new geometric two-phase problem for capillary minimal surfaces. We also apply this method to the obstacle problem establishing a connection between the directional derivatives of solutions to the obstacle problem and the linear thin two-membrane problem.

Unique continuation for nonlinear variational problems

This paper is dedicated to the unique continuation properties of the solutions to nonlinear variational problems. Our analysis covers the case of nonlinear autonomous functionals depending on the gradient, as well as more general double phase and multiphase functionals with $(2,q)$-growth in the gradient. We show that all these cases fall in a class of nonlinear functionals for which we are able to prove weak and strong unique continuation via the almost-monotonicity of Almgren's frequency formula. As a consequence, we obtain estimates on the dimension of the set of points at which both the solution and its gradient vanish.

On the boundary branching set of the one-phase problem

We consider minimizers of the one-phase Bernoulli free boundary problem in domains with analytic fixed boundary. In any dimension $d$, we prove that the branching set at the boundary has Hausdorff dimension at most $d-2$. As a consequence, we also obtain an analogous estimate on the branching set for solutions to the two-phase problem under an analytic separation condition. Moreover, as a byproduct of our analysis we obtain strong boundary unique continuation results for quasilinear operators and thin-obstacle variational inequalities. The approach we use is based on the (almost-)monotonicity of a boundary Almgren-type frequency function, obtained via regularity estimates and a Calderón-Zygmund decomposition in the spirit of Almgren-De Lellis-Spadaro.

Asymptotic location and shape of the optimal favorable region in a Neumann spectral problem

We complete the study concerning the minimization of the positive principal eigenvalue associated with a weighted Neumann problem settled in a bounded regular domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^{N}$, $N\ge2$, for the weight varying in a suitable class of sign-changing bounded functions. Denoting with $u$ the optimal eigenfunction and with $D$ its super-level set, corresponding to the positivity set of the optimal weight, we prove that, as the measure of $D$ tends to zero, the unique maximum point of $u$, $P\in \partial Ω$, tends to a point of maximal mean curvature of $\partial Ω$. Furthermore, we show that $D$ is the intersection with $Ω$ of a $C^{1,1}$ nearly spherical set, and we provide a quantitative estimate of the spherical asymmetry, which decays like a power of the measure of $D$. These results provide, in the small volume regime, a fully detailed answer to some long-standing questions in this framework.

On the fine structure of the solutions to nonlinear thin two-membrane problems in 2D

We prove a structure theorem for the solutions of nonlinear thin two-membrane problems in dimension two. Using the theory of quasi-conformal maps, we show that the difference of the sheets is topologically equivalent to a solution of the linear thin obstacle problem, thus inheriting its free boundary structure. More precisely, we show that even in the nonlinear case the branching points can only occur in finite number. We apply our methods to one-phase free boundaries approaching a fixed analytic boundary and to the solutions of a one-sided two-phase Bernoulli problem.

A capillarity one-phase Bernoulli free boundary problem

We consider a one-phase Bernoulli free boundary problem in a container $D$ - a smooth open subset of $\mathbb{R}^d$ - under the condition that on the fixed boundary $\partial D$ the normal derivative of the solutions is prescribed. We study the regularity of the free boundary (the boundary of the positivity set of the solution) up to $\partial D$ and the structure of the wetting region, which is the contact set between the free boundary and the ($(d-1)$-dimensional) fixed boundary $\partial D$. In particular, we characterize the contact angle in terms of the permeability of the porous container and we show that the boundary of the wetting region is a smooth $(d-2)$-dimensional manifold, up to a (possibly empty) closed set of Hausdorff dimension at most $d-5$.

Regularity for one-phase Bernoulli problems with discontinuous weights and applications

We study a one-phase Bernoulli free boundary problem with weight function admitting a discontinuity along a smooth jump interface. In any dimension $N\ge 2$, we show the $C^{1, α}$ regularity of the free boundary outside of a singular set of Hausdorff dimension at most $N-3$. In particular, we prove that the free boundaries are $C^{1, α}$ regular in dimension $N=2$, while in dimension $N=3$ the singular set can contain at most a finite number of points. We use this result to construct singular free boundaries in dimension $N=2$, which are minimizing for one-phase functionals with weight functions in $L^\infty$ that are arbitrarily close to a positive constant.

A one-sided two phase Bernoulli free boundary problem

We study a two-phase free boundary problem in which the two-phases satisfy an impenetrability condition. Precisely, we have two ordered positive functions, which are harmonic in their supports, satisfy a Bernoulli condition on the one-phase part of the free boundary and a two-phase condition on the collapsed part of the free boundary. For this two-membrane type problem, we prove an epsilon-regularity theorem with sharp modulus of continuity. Precisely, we show that at flat points each of the two boundaries is $C^{1,1/2}$ regular surface. Moreover, we show that the remaining singular set has Hausdorff dimension at most $N-5$ as in the case of the classical one-phase problem, $N$ being the dimension of the space.

Asymptotic properties of an optimal principal Dirichlet eigenvalue arising in population dynamics

We consider a shape optimization problem related to the persistence threshold for a biological species, the unknown shape corresponding to the zone of the habitat which is favorable to the population. Analytically, this translates in the minimization of a weighted eigenvalue of the Dirichlet Laplacian, with respect to a bang-bang indefinite weight. For such problem, we provide a full description of the singularly perturbed regime in which the volume of the favorable zone vanishes, with particular attention to the interplay between its location and shape. First, we show that the optimal favorable zone shrinks to a connected, nearly spherical set, in $C^{1,1}$ sense, which aims at maximizing its distance from the lethal boundary. Secondly, we show that the spherical asymmetry of the optimal favorable zone decays exponentially, with respect to a negative power of its volume, in the $C^{1,α}$ sense, for every $α<1$. This latter property is based on sharp quantitative asymmetry estimates for the optimization of a weighted eigenvalue problem on the full space, of independent interest.

Asymptotic properties of an optimal principal eigenvalue with spherical weight and Dirichlet boundary conditions

We consider a weighted eigenvalue problem for the Dirichlet laplacian in a smooth bounded domain $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^N$, where the bang-bang weight equals a positive constant $\overline{m}$ on a ball $B\subsetΩ$ and a negative constant $-\underline{m}$ on $Ω\setminus B$. The corresponding positive principal eigenvalue provides a threshold to detect persistence/extinction of a species whose evolution is described by the heterogeneous Fisher-KPP equation in population dynamics. In particular, we study the minimization of such eigenvalue with respect to the position of $B$ in $Ω$. We provide sharp asymptotic expansions of the optimal eigenpair in the singularly perturbed regime in which the volume of $B$ vanishes. We deduce that, up to subsequences, the optimal ball concentrates at a point maximizing the distance from $\partialΩ$.
