Simultaneous determination of mass parameter and radial marker in Schwarzschild geometry

We show that mass parameter and radial coordinate values can be indirectly measured in thought experiments performed in Schwarzschild spacetime, without using the Newtonian limit of general relativity or approximations based on Euclidean geometry. Our approach involves different proper time quantifcations as well as solutions to systems of algebraic equations, and aims to strengthen the conceptual independence of general relativity from Newtonian gravity.

A monoidal representation for linearized gravity

We propose an alternative representation for linear quantum gravity. It is based on the use of a structure that bears some resemblance to the Abelian loop representation used in electromagnetism but with the difference that space of extended object on which waves functions take values have a structure of commutative monoid instead of Abelian group. The generator of duality of the theory is realized in this representation and a geometrical interpretation is discussed.

Abelian Ashtekar formulation from the ADM action

We study the Ashtekar formulation of linear gravity starting from the ADM first order action for the non linear theory, linearizing it, and performing a canonical transformation that coordinatizes the phase space in terms of the already linearized Ashtekar variables. The results obtained in this way are in accordance with those obtained through the standard method, in which, after introducing the Ashtekar variables for the full theory, a linearization around the flat Abelian connection and its conjugate momentum is performed.

Mimetic discretization of the Abelian Chern-Simons theory and link invariants

A mimetic discretization of the Abelian Chern-Simons theory is presented. The study relies on the formulation of a theory of differential forms in the lattice, including a consistent definition of the Hodge duality operation. Explicit expressions for the Gauss Linking Number in the lattice, which correspond to their continuum counterparts are given. A discussion of the discretization of metric structures in the space of transverse vector densities is presented. The study of these metrics could serve to obtain explicit formulae for knot an link invariants in the lattice.

Hamiltonian BF theory and projected Borromean Rings

It is shown that the canonical formulation of the abelian BF theory in D = 3 allows to obtain topological invariants associated to curves and points in the plane. The method consists on finding the Hamiltonian on-shell of the theory coupled to external sources with support on curves and points in the spatial plane. We explicitly calculate a non-trivial invariant that could be seen as a "projection" of the Milnor's link invariant MU(1; 2; 3), and as such, it measures the entanglement of generalized (or projected) Borromeans Rings in the Euclidean plane.

Geometric Representation of the generator of duality in massless and massive $p-$form field theories

We study the invariance under duality transformations in massless and massive $p-$form field theories and obtain the Noether generators of the infinitesimal transformations that correspond to this symmetry. These generators are realized in geometrical representations that generalize the Loop Representation of the Maxwell field, allowing for a geometrical interpretation which is studied.

Electromagnetism and multiple-valued loop-dependent wave functionals

We quantize the Maxwell theory in the presence of a electric charge in a "dual" Loop Representation, i.e. a geometric representation of magnetic Faraday's lines. It is found that the theory can be seen as a theory without sources, except by the fact that the wave functional becomes multivalued. This can be seen as the dual counterpart of what occurs in Maxwell theory with a magnetic pole, when it is quantized in the ordinary Loop Representation. The multivaluedness can be seen as a result of the multiply-connectedness of the configuration space of the quantum theory.

Modified Mean Field approximation for the Ising Model

We study a modified mean-field approximation for the Ising Model in arbitrary dimension. Instead of taking a "central" spin, or a small "drop" of fluctuating spins coupled to the effective field of their nearest neighbors as in the Mean-Field or the Bethe-Peierls-Weiss methods, we take an infinite chain of fluctuating spins coupled to the mean field of the rest of the lattice. This results in a significative improvement of the Mean-Field approximation with a small extra effort.

Invariants from classical field theory

We introduce a method that generates invariant functions from perturbative classical field theories depending on external parameters. Applying our methods to several field theories such as abelian BF, Chern-Simons and 2-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, we obtain, respectively, the linking number for embedded submanifolds in compact varieties, the Gauss' and the second Milnor's invariant for links in S^3, and invariants under area-preserving diffeomorphisms for configurations of immersed planar curves.

Surface-Invariants in 2D Classical Yang-Mills Theory

We study a method to obtain invariants under area-preserving diffeomorphisms associated to closed curves in the plane from classical Yang-Mills theory in two dimensions. Taking as starting point the Yang-Mills field coupled to non dynamical particles carrying chromo-electric charge, and by means of a perturbative scheme, we obtain the first two contributions to the on shell action, which are area-invariants. A geometrical interpretation of these invariants is given.

Quantization of Interacting Non-Relativistic Open Strings using Extended Objects

Non-relativistic charged open strings coupled with Abelian gauge fields are quantized in a geometric representation that generalizes the Loop Representation. The model comprises open-strings interacting through a Kalb-Ramond field in four dimensions. It is shown that a consistent geometric-representation can be built using a scheme of ``surfaces and lines of Faraday'', provided that the coupling constant (the ``charge'' of the string) is quantized.

Magnetic Monopole in the Loop Representation

We quantize the electromagnetic field in the presence of a static magnetic monopole, within the loop-representation formalism. We find that the loop-dependent wave functional becomes multivalued, in the sense that it acquires a dependence on the surfaces bounded by the loop. This generalizes what occurs in quantum mechanics in multiply connected spaces. When Dirac's quantization condition holds, this surface-dependence disappears, together with the effect of the monopole on the electromagnetic field.

Loop Equations in Abelian Gauge Theories

The equations obeyed by the vacuum expectation value of the Wilson loop of Abelian gauge theories are considered from the point of view of the loop-space. An approximative scheme for studying these loop-equations for lattice Maxwell theory is presented. The approximation leads to a partial difference equation in the area and length variables of the loop, and certain physically motivated ansatz is seen to reproduce the mean field results from a geometrical perspective.

Interacting Particles and Strings in Path and Surface Representations

Non-relativistic charged particles and strings coupled with abelian gauge fields are quantized in a geometric representation that generalizes the Loop Representation. We consider three models: the string in self-interaction through a Kalb-Ramond field in four dimensions, the topological interaction of two particles due to a BF term in 2+1 dimensions, and the string-particle interaction mediated by a BF term in 3+1 dimensions. In the first case one finds that a consistent "surface-representation" can be built provided that the coupling constant is quantized. The geometrical setting that arises corresponds to a generalized version of the Faraday's lines picture: quantum states are labeled by the shape of the string, from which emanate "Faraday`s surfaces". In the other models, the topological interaction can also be described by geometrical means. It is shown that the open-path (or open-surface) dependence carried by the wave functional in these models can be eliminated through an unitary transformation, except by a remaining dependence on the boundary of the path (or surface). These feature is closely related to the presence of anomalous statistics in the 2+1 model, and to a generalized "anyonic behavior" of the string in the other case.

A Geometric Approach to Massive p-form Duality

Massive theories of abelian p-forms are quantized in a generalized path-representation that leads to a description of the phase space in terms of a pair of dual non-local operators analogous to the Wilson Loop and the 't Hooft disorder operators. Special atention is devoted to the study of the duality between the Topologically Massive and the Self-Dual models in 2+1 dimensions. It is shown that these models share a geometric representation in which just one non local operator suffices to describe the observables.

The space of signed points and the Self Dual Model

We study a generalization of the group of loops based on sets of signed points, instead of paths or loops. This geometrical setting incorporates the kinematical constraints of the Sigma Model, inasmuch as the the group of loops does with the Bianchi identities of Yang-Mills theories. We employ an Abelian version of this construction to quantize the Self-Dual Model, which allows us to relate this theory with that of a massless scalar field obeying non-trivial boundary conditions.

Link Invariants from Classical Chern-Simons Theory

Taking as starting point a perturbative study of the classical equations of motion of the non-Abelian Chern-Simons Theory with non-dynamical sources, we search for analytical expressions for link invarians. In order to present these expressions in a manifestly diffeomorphism-invariant form, we introduce a set of differential forms associated with submanifolds in Euclidean three-space that allow us to write the link invariants as a kind of surface-dependent diffeomorphism-invariants that present certain Abelian gauge symmetry.
