The C parameter distribution in e+e- annihilation

We study perturbative and non-perturbative aspects of the distribution of the C parameter in e+e- annihilation using renormalon techniques. We perform an exact calculation of the characteristic function, corresponding to the C parameter differential cross section for a single off-shell gluon. We then concentrate on the two-jet region, derive the Borel representation of the Sudakov exponent in the large-beta_0 limit and compare the result to that of the thrust T. Analysing the exponent, we distinguish two ingredients: the jet function, depending on Q^2C, summarizing the effects of collinear radiation, and a function describing soft emission at large angles, with momenta of order QC. The former is the same as for the thrust upon scaling C by 1/6, whereas the latter is different. We verify that the rescaled C distribution coincides with that of 1-T to next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, as predicted by Catani and Webber, and demonstrate that this relation breaks down beyond this order owing to soft radiation at large angles. The pattern of power corrections is also similar to that of the thrust: corrections appear as odd powers of Lambda/(QC). Based on the size of the renormalon ambiguity, however, the shape function is different: subleading power corrections for the C distribution appear to be significantly smaller than those for the thrust.

Exponentiation of the Drell-Yan cross section near partonic threshold in the DIS and MSbar schemes

It has been observed that in the DIS scheme the refactorization of the Drell-Yan cross section leading to exponentiation of threshold logarithms can also be used to organize a class of constant terms, most of which arise from the ratio of the timelike Sudakov form factor to its spacelike counterpart. We extend this exponentiation to include all constant terms, and demonstrate how a similar organization may be achieved in the MSbar scheme. We study the relevance of these exponentiations in a two-loop analysis.

On power corrections to event shapes

Recent work on the theme of power corrections in perturbative QCD is briefly reviewed, with an emphasis on event shapes in e+ e- annihilation. The factorization of soft gluon effects is the main tool: it leads to resummation, and thus highlights the limitations of perturbation theory, pointing to nonperturbative corrections whose size can be estimated. Power corrections can be resummed into shape functions, for which QCD--based models are available. Theoretical progress is closing in on the nonperturbative frontier.

Determination of alpha_s from scaling violations of truncated moments of structure functions

We determine the strong coupling alpha_s(M_Z) from scaling violations of truncated moments of the nonsinglet deep inelastic structure function F_2. Truncated moments are determined from BCDMS and NMC data using a neural network parametrization which retains the full experimental information on errors and correlations. Our method minimizes all sources of theoretical uncertainty and bias which characterize extractions of alpha_s from scaling violations. We obtain alpha_s(M_Z) = 0.124 +0.004-0.007 (exp.) + 0.003- 0.004 (th.).

Systematics of one-loop Yang-Mills diagrams from bosonic string amplitudes

We present a general algorithm to compute off-shell, one-loop multigluon Green functions using bosonic string amplitudes. We identify and parametrize the regions in the space of moduli of one-loop Riemann surfaces that contribute to the field theory limit of string amplitudes. Each of these regions can be precisely associated with a Feynman-like scalar graph with cubic and quartic vertices, whose lines represent the joint propagation of ghosts and gluons. We give a procedure to compute the contribution of each graph to a gluon Green function, for arbitrarily polarized off-shell gluons, reducible and irreducible diagrams, planar and non-planar topologies. Explicit examples are given for up to six gluons.

The resummed quark form factor in dimensional regularization

The resummed expression for the quark form factor illustrates the fact that dimensional continuation provides a regularization not only for ultraviolet and infrared singularities of fixed order QCD amplitudes, but also for the Landau pole arising in resummed calculations. Explicit renormalization group invariant analytic expressions for the logarithm of the form factor are given up to two-loop order in the QCD beta function.

Evolution of truncated moments of singlet parton distributions

We define truncated Mellin moments of parton distributions by restricting the integration range over the Bjorken variable to the experimentally accessible subset x_0 < x < 1 of the allowed kinematic range 0 < x < 1. We derive the evolution equations satisfied by truncated moments in the general (singlet) case in terms of an infinite triangular matrix of anomalous dimensions which couple each truncated moment to all higher moments with orders differing by integers. We show that the evolution of any moment can be determined to arbitrarily good accuracy by truncating the system of coupled moments to a sufficiently large but finite size, and show how the equations can be solved in a way suitable for numerical applications. We discuss in detail the accuracy of the method in view of applications to precision phenomenology.

Analytic resummation for the quark form factor in QCD

The quark form factor is known to exponentiate within the framework of dimensionally regularized perturbative QCD. The logarithm of the form factor is expressed in terms of integrals over the scale of the running coupling. I show that these integrals can be evaluated explicitly and expressed in terms of renormalization group invariant analytic functions of the coupling and of the space--time dimension, to any order in renormalized perturbation theory. Explicit expressions are given up two loops. To this order, all the infrared and collinear singularities in the logarithm of the form factor resum to a single pole in epsilon, whose residue is determined at one loop, plus powers of logarithms of epsilon. This behavior is conjectured to extend to all loops.

Scalar field theory limits of bosonic string amplitudes

We describe in detail the techniques needed to compute scattering amplitudes for colored scalars from the infinite tension limit of bosonic string theory, up to two loops. These techniques apply both to cubic and quartic interactions, and to planar as well as non-planar diagrams. The resulting field theories are naturally defined in the space-time dimension in which they are renormalizable. With a careful analysis of string moduli space in the Schottky representation we determine the region of integration for the moduli, which plays a crucial role in the derivation of the correct combinatorial and color factors for all diagrams.

Universality of 1/Q corrections revisited

We provide an exact analytical calculation at the two-loop level in the abelian limit of the leading power correction for the C parameter in e+e- annihilation. We compare our results to the numerical value obtained employing the soft approximation, the abelian part of the Milan factor. We demonstrate that a simple proportionality holds between the leading power corrections to the C parameter and to the longitudinal cross section in the soft region, and we verify that this proportionality holds for the full two-loop abelian contribution computed here. We comment on the possibility of extending this technique to other event shape variables and distributions, as well as to the non-abelian contributions.

Evolution of parton distributions with truncated Mellin moments

Evolution equations for parton distributions can be approximately diagonalized and solved in moment space without assuming any knowledge of the parton distribution in the region of small x. The evolution algorithm for truncated moments is simple and rapidly converging. Examples of applications are outlined.

Truncated moments of parton distributions

We derive evolution equations satisfied by moments of parton distributions when the integration over the Bjorken variable is restricted to a subset (x_0 <= x <= 1) of the allowed kinematical range 0<= x<= 1. The corresponding anomalous dimensions turn out to be given by a triangular matrix which couples the N--th truncated moment with all (N + K)--th truncated moments with integer K >= 0. We show that the series of couplings to higher moments is convergent and can be truncated to low orders while retaining excellent accuracy. We give an example of application to the determination of alpha_s from scaling violations.

String derivation of two-loop Feynman diagrams

We briefly review the technology involved in extracting the field-theory limit of multiloop bosonic string amplitudes, and we apply it to the evaluation of simple two-loop diagrams involving scalars and gauge bosons.

Rapidity gaps in perturbative QCD

We analyze diffractive deep inelastic scattering within perturbative QCD by studying lepton scattering on a heavy quark target. Simple explicit expressions are derived in impact parameter space for the photon wave function and the scattering cross sections corresponding to single and double Coulomb gluon exchange. At limited momentum transfers to the target, the results agree with the general features of the ``aligned jet model''. The color--singlet exchange cross section receives a leading twist contribution only from the aligned jet region, where the transverse size of the photon wave function remains finite in the Bjorken scaling limit. In contrast to inclusive DIS, in diffractive events there is no leading twist contribution to $σ_L/σ_T$ from the lowest order $(q\bar q)$ photon Fock state, and the cross section for heavy quarks is power suppressed in the quark mass. There are also important contributions with large momentum transfer to the target, which corresponds to events having high transverse momentum production in both the projectile and target rapidity regions, separated by a rapidity gap.

Two-loop scalar diagrams from string theory

We show how to obtain correctly normalized expressions for the Feynman diagrams of $Φ^3$ theory with an internal $U(N)$ symmetry group, starting from tachyon amplitudes of the open bosonic string, and suitably performing the zero--slope limit by giving an arbitrary mass $m$ to the tachyon. In particular we present explicit results for the two--loop amplitudes of $Φ^3$ theory, in preparation for the more interesting case of the multiloop amplitudes of non--abelian gauge theories.

Renormalization constants from string theory

We review some recent results on the calculation of renormalization constants in Yang-Mills theory using open bosonic strings. The technology of string amplitudes, supplemented with an appropriate continuation off the mass shell, can be used to compute the ultraviolet divergences of dimensionally regularized gauge theories. The results show that the infinite tension limit of string amplitudes corresponds to the background field method in field theory.
