Particle production during inflation and gravitational waves detectable by ground-based interferometers

Inflation typically predicts a quasi scale-invariant spectrum of gravitational waves. In models of slow-roll inflation, the amplitude of such a background is too small to allow direct detection without a dedicated space-based experiment such as the proposed BBO or DECIGO. In this paper we note that particle production during inflation can generate a feature in the spectrum of primordial gravitational waves. We discuss the possibility that such a feature might be detected by ground-based laser interferometers such as Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo, which will become operational in the next few years. We also discuss the prospects of detection by a space interferometer like LISA. We first study gravitational waves induced by nonperturbative, explosive particle production during inflation: while explosive production of scalar quanta does not generate a significant bump in the primordial tensor spectrum, production of vectors can. We also show that chiral gravitational waves produced by electromagnetic fields amplified by an axion-like inflaton could be detectable by Advanced LIGO.

Non-Gaussianities and chiral gravitational waves in natural steep inflation

In arXiv:0908.4089, we have proposed a model where natural inflation is realized on a steep potential as a consequence of the interaction of the inflaton with gauge fields through an axion-like coupling. In the present work we study the nongaussianities and the spectrum of tensor modes generated in this scenario. The nongaussianities turn out to be compatible with current observations and can be large enough to be detectable by Planck. The non-observation of tensor modes imposes new constraints on the parameter space of the system that are about one order of magnitude stronger than those found in our previous work. More importantly, in certain regions of the parameter space tensor modes might be detected by upcoming Cosmic Microwave Background experiments even if inflation occurs at energies as low as the TeV scale. In this case the tensor modes would be chiral, and would lead to distinctive parity-violating correlation functions in the CMB.

Dynamics of localized Kaluza-Klein black holes in a collapsing universe

The Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914 prohibits corporate mergers that would result in certain highly undesired end states. We study an exact solution of the Einstein equations describing localized, charged Kaluza-Klein black holes in a collapsing deSitter universe and seek to demonstrate that a similar effect holds, preventing a potentially catastrophic black hole merger. As the collapse proceeds, it is natural to expect that the black hole undergoes a topological transition, wrapping around the shrinking compact dimension to merge with itself and form a black string. However, the putative uniform charged black string end state is singular and such a transition would violate (a reasonable notion of) cosmic censorship. We present analytic and numerical evidence that strongly suggests the absence of such a transition. Based on this evidence, we expect that the Kaluza-Klein black hole horizon stays localized, despite the increasingly constraining size of the compact dimension. On the other hand, the deSitter horizon does change between spherical and cylindrical topologies in a simple way.

Parity violation in the Cosmic Microwave Background from a pseudoscalar inflaton

If the inflaton is a pseudoscalar, then it naturally interacts with gauge fields via an axion-like coupling to $F_{μν} \tilde{F}^{μν}$. Through this coupling, the rolling inflaton produces quanta of the gauge field, that in their turn source the tensor components of the metric perturbations. Due to the parity-violating nature of the system, the right- and the left-handed tensor modes have different amplitudes. Such an asymmetry manifests itself in the form of non-vanishing TB and EB correlation functions in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). We compute the amplitude of the parity-violating tensor modes and we discuss two scenarios, consistent with the current data, where parity-violating CMB correlation functions will be detectable in future experiments.

An Ignoble Approach to Large Field Inflation

We study an inflationary model developed by Kaloper and Sorbo, in which the inflaton is an axion with a sub-Planckian decay constant, whose potential is generated by mixing with a topological 4-form field strength. This gives a 4d construction of "axion monodromy inflation": the axion winds many times over the course of inflation and draws energy from the 4-form. The classical theory is equivalent to chaotic inflation with a quadratic inflaton potential. Such models can produce "high scale" inflation driven by energy densities of the order of $(10^{16}\ GeV)^4$, which produces primordial gravitational waves potentially accessible to CMB polarization experiments. We analyze the possible corrections to this scenario from the standpoint of 4d effective field theory, identifying the physics which potentially suppresses dangerous corrections to the slow-roll potential. This yields a constraint relation between the axion decay constant, the inflaton mass, and the 4-form charge. We show how these models can evade the fundamental constraints which typically make high-scale inflation difficult to realize. Specifically, the moduli coupling to the axion-four-form sector must have masses higher than the inflationary Hubble scale ($\la\ 10^{14}\ GeV$). There are also constraints from states that become light due to multiple windings of the axion, as happens in explicit string theory constructions of this scenario. Further, such models generally have a quantum-mechanical "tunneling mode" in which the axion jumps between windings, which must be suppressed. Finally, we outline possible observational signatures.

Tachyonic Quintessence and a Preferred Direction in the Sky

We show that quintessence, when it is described by a tachyonic field, can amplify a tiny primordial gradient generating a preferred direction in the sky. In its simplest realization, this mechanism only affects the Cosmic Microwave Background fluctuations at the quadrupole level. We briefly discuss how higher multipoles can also be affected, once the full structure of the quintessence potential is taken into account.

Naturally inflating on steep potentials through electromagnetic dissipation

In models of natural inflation, the inflaton is an axion-like particle. Unfortunately, axion potentials in UV-complete theories appear to be too steep to drive inflation. We show that, even for a steep potential, natural inflation can occur if the coupling between axion and gauge fields is taken into account. Due to this coupling, quanta of the gauge field are produced by the rolling of the axion. If the coupling is large enough, such a dissipative effect slows down the axion, leading to inflation even for a steep potential. The spectrum of perturbations is quasi-scale invariant, but in the simplest construction its amplitude is larger than $10^{-5}$. We discuss a possible way out of this problem.

Pauli-Fierz Gravitons on Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Background

We derive the Hamiltonian describing Pauli-Fierz massive gravitons on a flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) cosmology in a particular, non-generic effective field theory. The cosmological evolution is driven by a scalar field Phi with an arbitrary potential V(Phi). The model contains two coupled scalar modes, corresponding to the fluctuations of Phi and to the propagating scalar component of the Pauli-Fierz graviton. In order to preserve the full gauge invariance of the massless version of the theory, both modes have to be taken into account. We canonically normalize the Hamiltonian and generalize the Higuchi bound to FRW backgrounds. We discuss how this bound can set limits on the value of the Pauli-Fierz mass parameter. We also observe that on a generic FRW background the speed of propagation of the scalar mode of the graviton is always smaller than the speed of light.

Primordial perturbations and non-Gaussianities from modulated trapping

We propose a new mechanism to generate primordial curvature perturbations, based on the resonant production of particles during inflation. It is known that this phenomenon can trap the inflaton for a fraction of e-fold. This effect is governed by the mass of the produced particles and by their coupling to the inflaton, parameters which can depend on the expectation value of other fields. If one of such additional fields - a 'modulaton' - is light, then its fluctuations, acquired during the earlier stages of inflation, will induce a spatial modulation of the trapping, and thus of the end of inflation, corresponding to a curvature perturbation. We calculate the power spectrum, bispectrum and trispectrum of the curvature perturbations generated by this mechanism, taking into account the perturbations due to the inflaton fluctuations as well. We find that modulated trapping could provide the main contribution to the observed power spectrum and lead to detectable primordial non-gaussianities.

Where in the String Landscape is Quintessence

We argue that quintessence may reside in certain corners of the string landscape. It arises as a linear combination of internal space components of higher rank forms, which are axion-like at low energies, and may mix with 4-forms after compactification of the Chern-Simons terms to 4D due to internal space fluxes. The mixing induces an effective mass term, with an action which {\it preserves} the axion shift symmetry, breaking it spontaneously after the background selection. With several axions, several 4-forms, and a low string scale, as in one of the setups already invoked for dynamically explaining a tiny residual vacuum energy in string theory, the 4D mass matrix generated by random fluxes may have ultralight eigenmodes over the landscape, which are quintessence. We illustrate how this works in simplest cases, and outline how to get the lightest mass to be comparable to the Hubble scale now, $H_0 \sim 10^{-33} {\rm eV}$. The shift symmetry protects the smallest mass from perturbative corrections in field theory. Further, if the ultralight eigenmode does not couple directly to any sector strongly coupled at a high scale, the non-perturbative field theory corrections to its potential will also be suppressed. Finally, if the compactification length is larger than the string length by more than an order of magnitude, the gravitational corrections may remain small too, even when the field value approaches $M_{Pl}$.

A Natural Framework for Chaotic Inflation

We show that inflation with a quadratic potential occurs naturally in theories where an axion-like field mixes with a 4-form. Such an axion is massive, with the mass which arises from the mixing being protected by the axion shift symmetry. The 4-form backgrounds break this symmetry spontaneously and comprise a mini-landscape, where their fluxes can change by emission of membranes. Inflation can begin when the 4-form dominates the energy density. Eventually this energy is reduced by membrane emission and the axion can roll slowly towards its minimum, as in the simplest version of chaotic inflation.

Higgsflation at the GUT scale in a Higgsless Universe

We revisit inflation in induced gravity. Our focus is on models where the low scale Planck mass is completely determined by the breaking of the scaling symmetry in the field theory sector. The Higgs-like field which breaks the symmetry with a GUT-scale vacuum expectation value has non-minimal couplings to the curvature, induced by the gravitational couplings of the other light fields in the theory, so that its expectation value controls the gravitational strength. This field can drive inflation, and give a low energy universe in very good agreement with the cosmological observations. The low energy dynamics of the Standard Model cannot be unitarized by the Higgsflaton, which decouples from the low energy theory, both because it picks up a large mass and because its direct couplings to the low energy modes are weakened. Instead, the short distance behavior of the Standard Model may be regulated by the dynamics of other light degrees of freedom, such as in Higgsless models.

New exact solutions on the Randall-Sundrum 2-brane: lumps of dark radiation and accelerated black holes

We provide the most general embedding of a purely tensional 2-brane in a 3+1 dimensional bulk described by the AdS C-metric. The AdS C-metric has been first considered as bulk metric by Emparan, Horowitz and Myers (hep-th/9911043 and hep-th/9912135), who have found metrics describing a brane localized black hole. In those papers, one of the parameters of the bulk C-metric was fine-tuned to the brane tension. We relax this fine tuning and we find two new classes of solutions, the first describing a time dependent, rotationally symmetric metric, the second describing accelerated black holes on the brane. This is the first exact solution on the brane describing two objects in interaction. We discuss the qualitative CFT interpretation of these solutions.

Two gravitational shock waves on the AdS_3 brane

A gravitational shock wave is a solution to Einstein equations describing the gravitational field of a massless particle. We obtain such a geometry for a particle moving on a AdS_3 brane embedded in a AdS_4 bulk (the lower dimensional version of the "locally localized gravity" model of Karch and Randall). In order to do this, we use two different techniques. First, we solve directly Einstein equations sourced by a massless particle. Then we boost to the speed of light the AdS_3 brane black hole solution of Emparan et al while sending its mass parameter to zero. Surprisingly, we obtain two different results. We discuss the origin of these two different solutions both in the bulk and in the CFT picture. As a by-product, we derive the expression for the shock wave associated to a transversally accelerating particle in AdS_4.

Confronting pNGB quintessence with data

We analyze the observational constraints on the model where a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson (pNGB) plays the role of dark energy. The constraints are derived by using the latest Gold set of 182 type Ia supernovae and the CMB shift parameter. We allow for both the initial value of the scalar field and the present value of the energy density in the pNGB to vary. We find that - compared to previous analyses - the allowed portion of parameter space has shrunk around the region where the pNGB does not evolve significantly.

N-flationary magnetic fields

There is increasing interest in the role played by pseudo Nambu-Goldstone bosons (pNGBs) in the construction of string-inspired models of inflation. In these models the inflaton is expected to be coupled to gauge fields, and will lead to the generation of magnetic fields that can be of cosmological interest. We study the production of such fields mainly focusing on the model of N-flation, where the collective effect of several pNGBs drives inflation. Because the produced fields are maximally helical, inverse cascade processes in the primordial plasma increase significantly their coherence length. We discuss under what conditions inflation driven by pNGBs can account for the observed cosmological magnetic fields. A constraint on the parameters of this class of inflationary scenarios is also derived by requiring that the magnetic field does not backreact on the inflating background.

Standard 4d gravity on a brane in six dimensional flux compactifications

We consider a six dimensional space-time, in which two of the dimensions are compactified by a flux. Matter can be localized on a codimension one brane coupled to the bulk gauge field and wrapped around an axis of symmetry of the internal space. By studying the linear perturbations around this background, we show that the gravitational interaction between sources on the brane is described by Einstein 4d gravity at large distances. Our model provides a consistent setup for the study of gravity in the rugby (or football) compactification, without having to deal with the complications of a delta-like, codimension two brane. To our knowledge, this is the first complete study of gravity in a realistic brane model with two extra dimensions, in which the mechanism of stabilization of the extra space is consistently taken into account.
