Elliptic polylogarithms and iterated integrals on elliptic curves II: an application to the sunrise integral

We introduce a class of iterated integrals that generalize multiple polylogarithms to elliptic curves. These elliptic multiple polylogarithms are closely related to similar functions defined in pure math- ematics and string theory. We then focus on the equal-mass and non-equal-mass sunrise integrals, and we develop a formalism that enables us to compute these Feynman integrals in terms of our iterated integrals on elliptic curves. The key idea is to use integration-by-parts identities to identify a set of integral kernels, whose precise form is determined by the branch points of the integral in question. These kernels allow us to express all iterated integrals on an elliptic curve in terms of them. The flexibility of our approach leads us to expect that it will be applicable to a large variety of integrals in high-energy physics.

From modular forms to differential equations for Feynman integrals

In these proceedings we discuss a representation for modular forms that is more suitable for their application to the calculation of Feynman integrals in the context of iterated integrals and the differential equation method. In particular, we show that for every modular form we can find a representation in terms of powers of complete elliptic integrals of the first kind multiplied by algebraic functions. We illustrate this result on several examples. In particular, we show how to explicitly rewrite elliptic multiple zeta values as iterated integrals over powers of complete elliptic integrals and rational functions, and we discuss how to use our results in the context of the system of differential equations satisfied by the sunrise and kite integrals.

Higher order corrections to mixed QCD-EW contributions to Higgs production in gluon fusion

We present an estimate of the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to mixed QCD-electroweak contribution to Higgs boson production cross section in gluon fusion, combining the recently computed three-loop virtual corrections and the approximate treatment of real emission in the soft approximation. We find that the NLO QCD corrections to mixed QCD-electroweak contributions are nearly identical to NLO QCD corrections to QCD Higgs production. Our result confirms an earlier estimate of these ${\cal O}\left( α\, α_s^2 \right)$ effects in arXiv:0811.3458 [hep-ph] and provides further support for the factorization approximation of QCD and electroweak corrections.

Elliptic symbol calculus: from elliptic polylogarithms to iterated integrals of Eisenstein series

We present a generalization of the symbol calculus from ordinary multiple polylogarithms to their elliptic counterparts. Our formalism is based on a special case of a coaction on large classes of periods that is applied in particular to elliptic polylogarithms and iterated integrals of modular forms. We illustrate how to use our formalism to derive relations among elliptic polylogarithms, in complete analogy with the non-elliptic case. We then analyze the symbol alphabet of elliptic polylogarithms evaluated at rational points, and we observe that it is given by Eisenstein series for a certain congruence subgroup. We apply our formalism to hypergeometric functions that can be expressed in terms of elliptic polylogarithms and show that they can equally be written in terms of iterated integrals of Eisenstein series. Finally, we present the symbol of the equal-mass sunrise integral in two space-time dimensions. The symbol alphabet involves Eisenstein series of level six and weight three, and we can easily integrate the symbol in terms of iterated integrals of Eisenstein series.

Elliptic polylogarithms and iterated integrals on elliptic curves I: general formalism

We introduce a class of iterated integrals, defined through a set of linearly independent integration kernels on elliptic curves. As a direct generalisation of multiple polylogarithms, we construct our set of integration kernels ensuring that they have at most simple poles, implying that the iterated integrals have at most logarithmic singularities. We study the properties of our iterated integrals and their relationship to the multiple elliptic polylogarithms from the mathematics literature. On the one hand, we find that our iterated integrals span essentially the same space of functions as the multiple elliptic polylogarithms. On the other, our formulation allows for a more direct use to solve a large variety of problems in high-energy physics. We demonstrate the use of our functions in the evaluation of the Laurent expansion of some hypergeometric functions for values of the indices close to half integers.

An Elliptic Generalization of Multiple Polylogarithms

We introduce a class of functions which constitutes an obvious elliptic generalization of multiple polylogarithms. A subset of these functions appears naturally in the ε-expansion of the imaginary part of the two-loop massive sunrise graph. Building upon the well known properties of multiple polylogarithms, we associate a concept of weight to these functions and show that this weight can be lowered by the action of a suitable differential operator. We then show how properties and relations among these functions can be studied bottom-up starting from lower weights.

Top-bottom interference effects in Higgs plus jet production at the LHC

We compute next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the top-bottom interference contribution to H+j production at the LHC. To achieve this, we combine the recent computation of the two-loop amplitudes for gg -> Hg and qg -> Hq, performed in the approximation of a small b-quark mass, and the numerical calculation of the squared one-loop amplitudes for gg -> Hgg and qg -> Hqg performed within OpenLoops. We find that QCD corrections to the interference are large and similar to the QCD corrections to the top-mediated Higgs production cross section. We also observe a significant reduction in the mass-renormalization scheme uncertainty, once the NLO QCD prediction for the interference is employed.

Two-loop electroweak corrections to Higgs-gluon couplings to higher orders in the dimensional regularization parameter

We compute the two-loop electroweak correction to the production of the Higgs boson in gluon fusion to higher orders in the dimensional-regularization parameter $ε= (d-4)/2$. We employ the method of differential equations to compute the relevant integrals and express them in terms of Goncharov polylogarithms. Our result provides one of the necessary inputs for the computation of mixed three-loop QCD-electroweak corrections to $gg \to H$.

A non-planar two-loop three-point function beyond multiple polylogarithms

We consider the analytic calculation of a two-loop non-planar three-point function which contributes to the two-loop amplitudes for $t \bar{t}$ production and $γγ$ production in gluon fusion through a massive top-quark loop. All subtopology integrals can be written in terms of multiple polylogarithms over an irrational alphabet and we employ a new method for the integration of the differential equations which does not rely on the rationalization of the latter. The top topology integrals, instead, in spite of the absence of a massive three-particle cut, cannot be evaluated in terms of multiple polylogarithms and require the introduction of integrals over complete elliptic integrals and polylogarithms. We provide one-fold integral representations for the solutions and continue them analytically to all relevant regions of the phase space in terms of real function, extracting all imaginary parts explicitly. The numerical evaluation of our expressions becomes straightforward in this way.

Differential equations and dispersion relations for Feynman amplitudes. The two-loop massive sunrise and the kite integral

It is shown that the study of the imaginary part and of the corresponding dispersion relations of Feynman graph amplitudes within the differential equations method can provide a powerful tool for the solution of the equations, especially in the massive case. The main features of the approach are illustrated by discussing the simple cases of the 1-loop self-mass and of a particular vertex amplitude, and then used for the evaluation of the two-loop massive sunrise and the QED kite graph (the problem studied by Sabry in 1962), up to first order in the (d-4) expansion.

On the maximal cut of Feynman integrals and the solution of their differential equations

The standard procedure for computing scalar multi-loop Feynman integrals consists in reducing them to a basis of so-called master integrals, derive differential equations in the external invariants satisfied by the latter and, finally, try to solve them as a Laurent series in $ε= (4-d)/2$, where $d$ are the space-time dimensions. The differential equations are, in general, coupled and can be solved using Euler's variation of constants, provided that a set of homogeneous solutions is known. Given an arbitrary differential equation of order higher than one, there exist no general method for finding its homogeneous solutions. In this paper we show that the maximal cut of the integrals under consideration provides one set of homogeneous solutions, simplifying substantially the solution of the differential equations.

Two-loop $gg \to Hg$ amplitude mediated by a nearly massless quark

We analytically compute the two-loop scattering amplitude $gg \to Hg$ assuming that the mass of the quark, that mediates the ggH interaction, is vanishingly small. Our computation provides an important ingredient required to improve the theoretical description of the top-bottom interference effect in Higgs boson production in gluon fusion, and to elucidate its impact on the Higgs boson transverse momentum distribution.

QCD corrections to vector boson pair production in gluon fusion including interference effects with off-shell Higgs at the LHC

We compute next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the production of two massive electroweak bosons in gluon fusion. We consider both the prompt production process $gg \to VV$ and the production mediated by an exchange of an s-channel Higgs boson, $gg \to H^* \to V V$. We include final states with both on- and off-shell vector bosons with leptonic decays. The gluonic production of vector bosons is a loop-induced process, including both massless and massive quarks in the loop. For $gg \to ZZ$ production, we obtain the NLO QCD corrections to the massive loops through an expansion around the heavy top limit. This approximation is valid below the top production threshold, giving a broad range of invariant masses between the Higgs production and the top production thresholds in which our results are valid. We explore the NLO QCD effects in $gg \to ZZ$ focusing, in particular, on the interference between prompt and Higgs-mediated processes. We find that the QCD corrections to the interference are large and similar in size to the corrections to both the signal and the background processes. At the same time, we observe that corrections to the interference change rapidly with the four-lepton invariant mass in the region around the ZZ production threshold. We also study the interference effects in $gg \to WW$ production where, due to technical limitations, we only consider contributions of massless loops. We find that the QCD corrections to the interference in this case are somewhat larger than those for either the signal or the background.

QCD corrections to $W^+W^-$ production through gluon fusion

We compute the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the $gg \to W^+ W^- \to l^+_1 ν_1 l^-_2 \bar ν_2$ process, mediated by a massless quark loop, at the LHC. This process first contributes to the hadroproduction of $W^+W^-$ at $\mathcal{O}(α_s^2)$, but, nevertheless, has a sizable impact on the total production rate. We find that the NLO QCD corrections to the $gg \to W^+W^-$ process amount to ${\cal O}(50)$%, and increase the NNLO QCD cross sections of $pp \to W^+W^-$ by approximately two percent, at both the 8 TeV and 13 TeV LHC. We also compute the NLO corrections to gluonic $W^+W^-$ production within a fiducial volume used by the ATLAS collaboration in their 8 TeV measurement of the $W^+W^-$ production rate and find that the QCD corrections are significantly smaller than in the inclusive case. While the current experimental uncertainties are still too large to make these differences relevant, the observed strong dependence of perturbative corrections on kinematic cuts underscores that extrapolation from a fiducial measurement to the total cross section is an extremely delicate matter, and calls for the direct comparison of fiducial volume measurements with corresponding theoretical computations.

Integration by parts identities in integer numbers of dimensions. A criterion for decoupling systems of differential equations

Integration by parts identities (IBPs) can be used to express large numbers of apparently different d-dimensional Feynman Integrals in terms of a small subset of so-called master integrals (MIs). Using the IBPs one can moreover show that the MIs fulfil linear systems of coupled differential equations in the external invariants. With the increase in number of loops and external legs, one is left in general with an increasing number of MIs and consequently also with an increasing number of coupled differential equations, which can turn out to be very difficult to solve. In this paper we show how studying the IBPs in fixed integer numbers of dimension d=n with $n \in \mathbb{N}$ one can extract the information useful to determine a new basis of MIs, whose differential equations decouple as $d \to n$ and can therefore be more easily solved as Laurent expansion in (d-n).

QCD corrections to ZZ production in gluon fusion at the LHC

We compute the next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the production of two Z-bosons in the annihilation of two gluons at the LHC. Being enhanced by a large gluon flux, these corrections provide distinct and, potentially, the dominant part of the N$^3$LO QCD contributions to Z-pair production in proton collisions. The $gg \to ZZ$ annihilation is a loop-induced process that receives the dominant contribution from loops of five light quarks, that are included in our computation in the massless approximation. We find that QCD corrections increase the $gg \to ZZ$ production cross section by ${\cal O}(50\%-100\%)$ depending on the values of the renormalization and factorization scales used in the leading order computation, and the collider energy. The large corrections to $gg \to ZZ$ channel increase the $pp \to ZZ$ cross section by about six to eight percent, exceeding the estimated theoretical uncertainty of the recent NNLO QCD calculation.
