Machine-Learning-Empowered Quantum Sensing of the Plaquette Phase in a Three-Level Delta System

We propose a machine-learning-empowered approach to the quantum sensing of the plaquette phase, a gauge-invariant quantity arising in three-level $Δ$ systems. This phase profoundly affects the system dynamics, breaking coherent population trapping and inducing a non-trivial phase dependence of the dynamics. We demonstrate that a multi-layer perceptron (MLP), trained in a supervised-learning framework, can accurately estimate the plaquette phase from STImulated Raman Adiabatic Passage (STIRAP) population transfer efficiencies measured under different driving conditions, which provide experimentally accessible observables. Our results highlight how the combination of coherent control and machine learning (ML) enables effective phase identification in closed-loop quantum systems, opening new perspectives for quantum technologies, specifically quantum sensing applications including synthetic gauge fields.

Characterization of the transient response of diamond sensors to collimated, sub-ps, 1 GeV electron bunches

Diamond sensors (DS) are widely used as solid-state particle detectors, beam loss monitors, and dosimeters in high-radiation environments, e.g., particle colliders. We have calibrated our DS with steady $β$- and X-radiation, spanning a dose rate in the range 0.1-100 mGy/s. Here, we report the first systematic characterization of transient responses of DS to collimated, sub-picosecond, 1 GeV electron bunches. These bunches, possessing a charge ranging from tens to hundreds of pC and a size from tens of microns to millimeters, are suitably provided by the FERMI electron linac in Trieste, Italy. The high density of charge carriers generated by ionization in the diamond bulk causes a transient modification of electrical properties of DS (e.g., resistance), which in turn affects the signal shape. We have modeled a two-step numerical approach, simulating the effects on the signal of both the evolution of charge carrier density in the diamond bulk and the changes in the circuit parameters. This approach interprets features observed in our experimental results to a great extent.

Measurements of Beam Backgrounds in SuperKEKB Phase 2

The high design luminosity of the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider will result in challenging levels of beam-induced backgro\ unds in the interaction region. Understanding and mitigating these backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle~II experi\ ment. We report on the first background measurements performed after roll-in of the Belle II detector, a period known as SuperKE\ KB Phase 2, utilizing both the BEAST II system of dedicated background detectors and the Belle II detector itself. We also repor\ t on first revisions to the background simulation made in response to our findings. Backgrounds measured include contributions f\ rom synchrotron radiation, beam-gas, Touschek, and injection backgrounds. At the end of Phase 2, single-beam backgrounds origina\ ting from the 4 GeV positron Low Energy Ring (LER) agree reasonably well with simulation, while backgrounds from the 7 GeV elect\ ron High Energy Ring (HER) are approximately one order of magnitude higher than simulation. We extrapolate these backgrounds for\ ward and conclude it is safe to install the Belle II vertex detector.

Conformal Truncation of Chern-Simons Theory at Large $N_f$

We set up and analyze the lightcone Hamiltonian for an abelian Chern-Simons field coupled to $N_f$ fermions in the limit of large $N_f$ using conformal truncation, i.e. with a truncated space of states corresponding to primary operators with dimension below a maximum cutoff $Δ_{\rm max}$. In both the Chern-Simons theory, and in the $O(N)$ model at infinite $N$, we compute the current spectral functions analytically as a function of $Δ_{\rm max}$ and reproduce previous results in the limit that the truncation $Δ_{\rm max}$ is taken to $\infty$. Along the way, we determine how to preserve gauge invariance and how to choose an optimal discrete basis for the momenta of states in the truncation space.

The local Callan-Symanzik equation: structure and applications

The local Callan-Symanzik equation describes the response of a quantum field theory to local scale transformations in the presence of background sources. The consistency conditions associated with this anomalous equation imply non-trivial relations among the $β$-function, the anomalous dimensions of composite operators and the short distance singularities of correlators. In this paper we discuss various aspects of the local Callan-Symanzik equation and present new results regarding the structure of its anomaly. We then use the equation to systematically write the n-point correlators involving the trace of the energy-momentum tensor. We use the latter result to give a fully detailed proof that the UV and IR asymptotics in a neighbourhood of a 4D CFT must also correspond to CFTs. We also clarify the relation between the matrix entering the gradient flow formula for the $β$-function and a manifestly positive metric in coupling space associated with matrix elements of the trace of the energy momentum tensor.

Mixing Patterns from the Groups Sigma (n phi)

We survey the mixing patterns which can be derived from the discrete groups Sigma (36 x 3), Sigma (72 x 3), Sigma (216 x 3) and Sigma (360 x 3), if these are broken to abelian subgroups Ge and Gnu in the charged lepton and neutrino sector, respectively. Since only Sigma (360 x 3) possesses Klein subgroups, only this group allows neutrinos to be Majorana particles. We find a few patterns that can agree well with the experimental data on lepton mixing in scenarios with small corrections and that predict the reactor mixing angle theta_{13} to be 0.1 <= theta_{13} <= 0.2. All these patterns lead to a trivial Dirac phase. Patterns which instead reveal CP violation tend to accommodate the data not well. We also comment on the outer automorphisms of the discussed groups, since they can be useful for relating inequivalent representations of these groups.

A naturally light dilaton

Goldstone's theorem does not apply straightforwardly to the case of spontaneously broken scale invariance. We elucidate under what conditions a light scalar degree of freedom, identifiable with the dilaton, can naturally arise. Our construction can be considered an explicit dynamical solution to the cosmological constant problem in the scalar version of gravity.
