Infinite volume limits of polymer chains with periodic charges

The aim of this paper is twofold: - To give an elementary and self-contained proof of an explicit formula for the free energy for a general class of polymer chains interacting with an environment through periodic potentials. This generalizes a result in [Bolthausen and Giacomin, AAP 2005] in which the formula is derived by using the Donsker-Varadhan Large Deviations theory for Markov chains. We exploit instead tools from renewal theory. - To identify the infinite volume limits of the system. In particular, in the different regimes we encounter transient, null recurrent and positive recurrent processes (which correspond to delocalized, critical and localized behaviors of the trajectories). This is done by exploiting the sharp estimates on the partition function of the system obtained by the renewal theory approach. The precise characterization of the infinite volume limits of the system exposes a non-uniqueness problem. We will however explain in detail how this (at first) surprising phenomenon is instead due to the presence of a first-order phase transition.

Convergence of approximations of monotone gradient systems

We consider stochastic differential equations in a Hilbert space, perturbed by the gradient of a convex potential. We investigate the problem of convergence of a sequence of such processes. We propose applications of this method to reflecting O.U. processes in infinite dimension, to stochastic partial differential equations with reflection of Cahn-Hilliard type and to interface models.

Sharp asymptotic behavior for wetting models in (1+1)-dimension

We consider continuous and discrete (1+1)-dimensional wetting models which undergo a localization/delocalization phase transition. Using a simple approach based on Renewal Theory we determine the precise asymptotic behavior of the partition function, from which we obtain the scaling limits of the models and an explicit construction of the infinite volume measure (thermodynamic limit) in all regimes, including the critical one.

Integration by parts on the law of the reflecting Brownian motion

We prove an integration by parts formula on the law of the reflecting Brownian motion $X:=|B|$ in the positive half line, where $B$ is a standard Brownian motion. In other terms, we consider a perturbation of $X$ of the form $X^ε= X+εh$ with $h$ smooth deterministic function and $ε>0$ and we differentiate the law of $X^ε$ at $ε=0$. This infinitesimal perturbation changes drastically the set of zeros of $X$ for any $ε>0$. As a consequence, the formula we obtain contains an infinite dimensional generalized functional in the sense of Schwartz, defined in terms of Hida's renormalization of the squared derivative of $B$ and in terms of the local time of $X$ at 0. We also compute the divergence on the Wiener space of a class of vector fields not taking values in the Cameron-Martin space.

Occupation densities for SPDE's with reflection

We consider the solution (u,η) of the white-noise driven stochastic partial differential equation with reflection on the space interval [0,1] introduced by Nualart and Pardoux. First, we prove that at any fixed time t>0, the measure η([0,t]\times dθ) is absolutely continuous w.r.t. the Lebesgue measure dθon (0,1). We characterize the density as a family of additive functionals of u, and we interpret it as a renormalized local time at 0 of (u(t,θ))_{t\geq 0}. Finally we study the behaviour of ηat the boundary of [0,1]. The main technical novelty is a projection principle from the Dirichlet space of a Gaussian process, vector-valued solution of a linear SPDE, to the Dirichlet space of the process u.
