Dynamic realization of miscellaneous profile services in elastic optical networks using spectrum partitioning

Optical backbone networks are required to be highly dynamic in supporting requests with flexible bandwidth granularities to cope with the demands of new broadband wireless and fixed access networks. To provide this flexibility, services are offered by taking requested bandwidth profile into consideration, instead of assigning a fixed amount of bandwidth to each request. New techniques are developed for the resource management of the elastic optical networks to realize services with a specified bandwidth profile, consisting of minimum, average, and maximum required number of spectrum slots, in addition to holding time. In this work, two new schemes are proposed to realize such services, exploiting a probabilistic spectrum partitioning approach. This new probabilistic spectrum partitioning scheme is devised to enhance the chance of accommodating requests and consequently lower request blocking probability. It enforces different probabilities to contributing spectrum partitions in a certain service realization. Taking advantage of this probabilistic spectrum partitioning and a profile-based routing, we introduce two multistage spectrum assignment methods to make a certain lightpath meet the requested service profile constraints, considering the time-weighted average of the assigned spectrum slots. The results indicate that our algorithms can successfully realize the requests with the probability of 0.993 for the offered loads less than 400 erlang.

Analytical Modeling of Nonlinear Fiber Propagation for Four Dimensional Symmetric Constellations

Coherent optical transmission systems naturally lead to a four dimensional (4D) signal space, i.e., two polarizations each with two quadratures. In this paper we derive an analytical model to quantify the impact of Kerr nonlinearity on such 4Dspaces, taking the interpolarization dependency into account. This is in contrast to previous models such as the GN and EGN models, which are valid for polarization multiplexed (PM)formats, where the two polarizations are seen as independent channels on which data is multiplexed. The proposed model agrees with the EGN model in the special case of independent two-dimensional modulation in each polarization. The model accounts for the predominant nonlinear terms in a WDM system, namely self-phase modulation and and cross-phase modulation. Numerical results show that the EGN model may inaccurately estimate the nonlinear interference of 4D formats. This nonlinear interference discrepancy between the results of the proposed model and the EGN model could be up to 2.8 dB for a system with 80 WDM channels. The derived model is validated by split-step Fourier simulations, and it is shown to follow simulations very closely.

An Improved Model of Nonlinear Fiber Propagation in the Presence of Kerr Nonlinearity and Stimulated Raman Scattering

Ultra-wideband fiber optical transmission suffers from both Kerr nonlinearity and stimulated Raman scattering (SRS). Mathematical models that address the interplay between Kerr nonlinearity and SRS exist. These models are based on the Gaussian-noise (GN) and enhanced Gaussian noise (EGN) models. In this paper, we propose a modulation-format-dependent model, accounting for an enhanced link function, which is valid for non-identical spans where the fiber span loss and SRS gain/loss are not necessarily compensated for by the amplifier at the end of each span. A new signal power profile is also introduced, comprising the frequency-dependent fiber attenuation. The proposed analytical model takes all terms of nonlinear interference (NLI), including self-channel interference, cross-channel interference, and multi-channel interference, into account. It is also shown that the proposed model has the power to predict the NLI power with greater precision than the previous models can. Split-step Fourier simulations indicate that when both SRS and arbitrary modulation formats are considered, previous models may inaccurately predict the NLI power. This difference could be up to 4.3 dB for a 10.011 THz system with 1001 channels at 10 Gbaud.

A Low-Complexity Detector for Memoryless Polarization-Multiplexed Fiber-Optical Channels

A low-complexity detector is introduced for polarization-multiplexed M-ary phase shift keying modulation in a fiber-optical channel impaired by nonlinear phase noise, generalizing a previous result by Lau and Kahn for single-polarization signals. The proposed detector uses phase compensation based on both received signal amplitudes in conjunction with simple straight-line rather than four-dimensional maximum-likelihood decision boundaries.
