Energy transfer properties and absorption spectra of the FMO complex: from exact PIMC calculations to TCL master equations

We investigate the excitonic energy transfer (EET) in the Fenna-Matthews-Olsen complex and obtain the linear absorption spectrum (at 300 K) by a phenomenological time-convolutionless (TCL) master equation which is validated by utilizing Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) simulations. By applying Marcus' theory for choosing the proper Lindblad operators for the long-time incoherent hopping process and using local non-Markovian dephasing rates, our model shows very good agreement with the PIMC results for EET. It also correctly reproduces the linear absorption spectrum that is found in experiment, without using any fitting parameters.

Bistability signatures in nonequilibrium charge transport through molecular quantum dots

We investigate the transient nonequilibrium dynamics of a molecular junction biased by a finite voltage and strongly coupled to internal vibrational degrees of freedom. Using two different, numerical exact techniques, diagrammatic Monte Carlo and the multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree method, we show that the steady state current through the junction may depend sensitively on the initial preparation of the system, thus revealing signatures of bistability. The influence of the bias voltage and the transient dynamics on the phenomenon of bistability is analyzed. Furthermore, a possible relation to the phenomenon of stochastic switching in nanoelectromecanical devices is discussed.

Dissipative Dynamics with Trapping in Dimers

The trapping of excitations in systems coupled to an environment allows to study the quantum to classical crossover by different means. We show how to combine the phenomenological description by a non-hermitian Liouville-von Neumann Equation (LvNE) approach with the numerically exact path integral Monte-Carlo (PIMC) method, and exemplify our results for a system of two coupled two-level systems. By varying the strength of the coupling to the environment we are able to estimate the parameter range in which the LvNE approach yields satisfactory results. Moreover, by matching the PIMC results with the LvNE calculations we have a powerful tool to extrapolate the numerically exact PIMC method to long times.

Nonequilibrium many-body dynamics along a dissipative Hubbard chain: Symmetries and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations

The nonequilibrium dynamics of correlated charge transfer along a one-dimensional chain in presence of a phonon environment is investigated within a dissipative Hubbard model. For this generalization of the ubiquitous spin-boson model the crucial role of symmetries is analysed in detail and corresponding invariant subspaces are identified. It is shown that the time evolution typically occurs in each of the disjunct subspaces independently leading e.g. asymptotically to a non-Boltzmann equilibrium state. Based on these findings explicit results are obtained for two interacting electrons by means of a substantially improved real-time quantum Monte Carlo approach. In the incoherent regime an appropriate mapping of the many-body dynamics onto an isomorphic single particle motion allows for an approximate description of the numerical data in terms of rate equations. These results may lead to new control schemes of charge transport in tailored quantum systems as e.g. molecular chains or quantum dot arrays.

Real-time Monte-Carlo simulations for dissipative tight-binding systems and time local master equations

The numerically exact path integral Monte Carlo approach for the real-time evolution of dissipative quantum systems (PIMC), particularly suited for systems with discrete configuration space (tight-binding systems), is extended to treat spatially continuous and correlated many-body systems. This way, one has to consider generalized tight-binding lattices with either non-equidistant spacing or in higher dimensions, which in turn allows to analyze to what extent Markovian master equations can be applied beyond the usually studied spin-boson type of models.

Path-integral Monte-Carlo simulations for electronic dynamics on molecular chains: II. Transport across impurities

Electron transfer (ET) across molecular chains including an impurity is studied based on a recently improved real-time path integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) approach [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 121}, 12696 (2004)]. The reduced electronic dynamics is studied for various bridge lengths and defect site energies. By determining intersite hopping rates from PIMC simulations up to moderate times, the relaxation process in the extreme long time limit is captured within a sequential transfer model. The total transfer rate is extracted and shown to be enhanced for certain defect site energies. Further, it is revealed that the entire bridge compound approaches a steady state on a much shorter time scale than that related to the total transfer which allows for a simplified description of ET along donor-bridge-acceptor systems in the long time range.
