Decomposing the automorphism group of the surreal numbers

We study the automorphism group of the field of surreal numbers. Our main structure theorem presents a decomposition of this group into a product of five significant factors. Using the representation of surreal numbers as generalized power series via their Conway normal form, we apply results on Hahn fields and groups from the literature in order to obtain this decomposition. Moreover, we provide explicit descriptions of the individual factors enabling us to construct automorphisms on the field of surreal numbers from simpler components. We then extend our study to strongly linear automorphisms in connection to derivations, as well as automorphisms that preserve further exponential structure on the surreals.

Ordered henselian valued fields: definability and Borel sets

We firstly show that due to their resplendency ordered henselian valued fields admit relative field quantifier elimination in the Denef--Pas language expanded by linear orders in the field and residue field sort. Secondly, we deduce from a dimensionality reduction theorem that any set definable over an ordered henselian valued field is a Borel set with respect to the order topology. Our results are contextualised within Shelah's classification conjecture of NIP fields and its connections to the study of definable henselian valuations and the Fundamental Theorem of Statistical Learning.

Definable ranks

We introduce the notion of the definable rank of an ordered field, ordered abelian group and ordered set, respectively. We study the relation between the definable rank of an ordered field and the definable rank of the value group of its natural valuation. Similarly, we compare the definable rank of an ordered abelian group to that of its value set with respect to the natural valuation. We describe the definable rank on the group-level by characterizing the definable convex subgroups. We also give a detailed comparison of field- and group-level, in particular for ordered fields with henselian natural valuation. We investigate definability of final segments in ordered sets and introduce definable condensation as a tool for further study.

Recursively Enumerably Representable Classes and Computable Versions of the Fundamental Theorem of Statistical Learning

We study computable probably approximately correct (CPAC) learning, where learners are required to be computable functions. It had been previously observed that the Fundamental Theorem of Statistical Learning, which characterizes PAC learnability by finiteness of the Vapnik-Chervonenkis (VC-)dimension, no longer holds in this framework. Recent works recovered analogs of the Fundamental Theorem in the computable setting, for instance by introducing an effective VC-dimension. Guided by this, we investigate the connection between CPAC learning and recursively enumerable representable (RER) classes, whose members can be algorithmically listed. Our results show that the effective VC-dimensions can take arbitrary values above the traditional one, even for RER classes, which creates a whole family of (non-)examples for various notions of CPAC learning. Yet the two dimensions coincide for classes satisfying sufficiently strong notions of CPAC learning. We then observe that CPAC learnability can also be characterized via containment of RER classes that realize the same samples. Furthermore, it is shown that CPAC learnable classes satisfying a unique identification property are necessarily RER. Finally, we establish that agnostic learnability can be guaranteed for RER classes, by considering the relaxed notion of nonuniform CPAC learning.

Time-series Random Process Complexity Ranking Using a Bound on Conditional Differential Entropy

Conditional differential entropy provides an intuitive measure for relatively ranking time-series complexity by quantifying uncertainty in future observations given past context. However, its direct computation for high-dimensional processes from unknown distributions is often intractable. This paper builds on the information theoretic prediction error bounds established by Fang et al. \cite{fang2019generic}, which demonstrate that the conditional differential entropy \textbf{$h(X_k \mid X_{k-1},...,X_{k-m})$} is upper bounded by a function of the determinant of the covariance matrix of next-step prediction errors for any next step prediction model. We add to this theoretical framework by further increasing this bound by leveraging Hadamard's inequality and the positive semi-definite property of covariance matrices. To see if these bounds can be used to rank the complexity of time series, we conducted two synthetic experiments: (1) controlled linear autoregressive processes with additive Gaussian noise, where we compare ordinary least squares prediction error entropy proxies to the true entropies of various additive noises, and (2) a complexity ranking task of bio-inspired synthetic audio data with unknown entropy, where neural network prediction errors are used to recover the known complexity ordering. This framework provides a computationally tractable method for time-series complexity ranking using prediction errors from next-step prediction models, that maintains a theoretical foundation in information theory.

Measurability in the Fundamental Theorem of Statistical Learning

The Fundamental Theorem of Statistical Learning states that a hypothesis space is PAC learnable if and only if its VC dimension is finite. For the agnostic model of PAC learning, the literature so far presents proofs of this theorem that often tacitly impose several measurability assumptions on the involved sets and functions. We scrutinize these proofs from a measure-theoretic perspective in order to explicitly extract the assumptions needed for a rigorous argument. This leads to a sound statement as well as a detailed and self-contained proof of the Fundamental Theorem of Statistical Learning in the agnostic setting, showcasing the minimal measurability requirements needed. As the Fundamental Theorem of Statistical Learning underpins a wide range of further theoretical developments, our results are of foundational importance: A careful analysis of measurability aspects is essential, especially when the theorem is used in settings where measure-theoretic subtleties play a role. We particularly discuss applications in Model Theory, considering NIP and o-minimal structures. Our main theorem presents sufficient conditions for the PAC learnability of hypothesis spaces defined over o-minimal expansions of the reals. This class of hypothesis spaces covers all artificial neural networks for binary classification that use commonly employed activation functions like ReLU and the sigmoid function.

Automorphisms and derivations on algebras endowed with formal infinite sums

We establish a correspondence between automorphisms and derivations on certain algebras of generalised power series. In particular, we describe a Lie algebra of derivations on a field $k(\!(G)\!)$ of generalised power series, exploiting our knowledge of its group of valuation preserving automorphisms. The correspondence is given by the formal Taylor expansion of the exponential. In order to define the exponential map, we develop an appropriate notion of summability of infinite families in algebras. We show that there is a large class of algebras in which the exponential induces the above correspondence.

On Tameness, Measurability and the Independence Property

In the area of Tame Geometry, different model-theoretic tameness conditions are established and their relationships are analyzed. We construct a subfield $K$ of the real numbers that lacks several of such tameness properties. As our main result, we present a first-order formula in the language of rings that defines a non-Borel set in $K$. Moreover, $K$ has the independence property and admits both archimedean and non-archimedean orderings.

Generalised power series determined by linear recurrence relations

In 1882, Kronecker established that a given univariate formal Laurent series over a field can be expressed as a fraction of two univariate polynomials if and only if the coefficients of the series satisfy a linear recurrence relation. We introduce the notion of generalised linear recurrence relations for power series with exponents in an arbitrary ordered abelian group, and generalise Kronecker's original result. In particular, we obtain criteria for determining whether a multivariate formal Laurent series lies in the fraction field of the corresponding polynomial ring. Moreover, we study distinguished algebraic substructures of a power series field, which are determined by generalised linear recurrence relations. In particular, we identify generalised linear recurrence relations that determine power series fields satisfying additional properties which are essential for the study of their automorphism groups.

Definable henselian valuations on dp-minimal real fields

We give an explicit algebraic characterisation of all definable henselian valuations on a dp-minimal real field. Additionally we characterise all dp-minimal real fields that admit a definable henselian valuation with real closed residue field. We do so by first proving this for the more general setting of almost real closed fields.

Embedding the prime model of real exponentiation into o-minimal exponential fields

Motivated by the decidability question for the theory of real exponentiation and by the Transfer Conjecture for o-minimal exponential fields, we show that, under the assumption of Schanuel's Conjecture, the prime model of real exponentiation is embeddable into any o-minimal exponential field, where the embedding is not necessarily elementary. This is a consequence of an unconditional model theoretic embeddability result that we obtain by applying Kőnig's Lemma.

Ordered transexponential fields

We develop a first-order theory of ordered transexponential fields in the language $\{+,\cdot,0,1,<,e,T\}$, where $e$ and $T$ stand for unary function symbols. While the archimedean models of this theory are readily described, the study of the non-archimedean models leads to a systematic examination of the induced structure on the residue field and the value group under the natural valuation. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions on the value group of an ordered exponential field $(K,e)$ to admit a transexponential function $T$ compatible with $e$. Moreover, we give a full characterisation of all countable ordered transexponential fields in terms of their valuation theoretic invariants.

Definable valuations on ordered fields

We study the definability of convex valuations on ordered fields, with a particular focus on the distinguished subclass of henselian valuations. In the setting of ordered fields, one can consider definability both in the language of rings $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{r}}$ and in the richer language of ordered rings $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{or}}$. We analyse and compare definability in both languages and show the following contrary results: while there are convex valuations that are definable in the language $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{or}}$ but not in the language $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{r}}$, any $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{or}}$-definable henselian valuation is already $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{r}}$-definable. To prove the latter, we show that the value group and the ordered residue field of an ordered henselian valued field are stably embedded (as an ordered abelian group, respectively as an ordered field). Moreover, we show that in almost real closed fields any $\mathcal{L}_{\mathrm{or}}$-definable valuation is henselian.

Definability of henselian valuations by conditions on the value group

Given a henselian valuation, we study its definability (with and without parameters) by examining conditions on the value group. We show that any henselian valuation whose value group is not closed in its divisible hull is definable in the language of rings, using one parameter. Thereby we strengthen known definability results. Moreover, we show that in this case, one parameter is optimal in the sense that one cannot obtain definability without parameters. To this end, we present a construction method for a $t$-henselian non-henselian ordered field elementarily equivalent to a henselian field with a specified value group.

On Rayner structures

In this note, we study substructures of generalised power series fields induced by families of well-ordered subsets of the group of exponents. We characterise the set-theoretic and algebraic properties of the induced substructures in terms of conditions on the families. We extend the work of Rayner by giving both \emph{necessary} and sufficient conditions to obtain truncation closed subgroups, subrings and subfields.

Strongly NIP almost real closed fields

The following conjecture is due to Shelah-Hasson: Any infinite strongly NIP field is either real closed, algebraically closed, or admits a non-trivial definable henselian valuation, in the language of rings. We specialise this conjecture to ordered fields in the language of ordered rings, which leads towards a systematic study of the class of strongly NIP almost real closed fields. As a result, we obtain a complete characterisation of this class.

Ordered fields dense in their real closure and definable convex valuations

In this paper, we undertake a systematic model and valuation theoretic study of the class of ordered fields which are dense in their real closure. We apply this study to determine definable henselian valuations on ordered fields, in the language of ordered rings. In light of our results, we re-examine the Shelah-Hasson Conjecture (specialised to ordered fields) and provide an example limiting its valuation theoretic conclusions.

On Strongly NIP Ordered Fields and Definable Convex Valuations

We investigate what henselian valuations on ordered fields are definable in the language of ordered rings. This leads towards a systematic study of the class of ordered fields which are dense in their real closure. Some results have connections to recent conjectures on definability of henselian valuations in strongly NIP fields. Moreover, we obtain a complete characterisation of strongly NIP almost real closed fields.
