Logarithmic Hyperseries

We define the field $\mathbb{L}$ of logarithmic hyperseries, construct on $\mathbb{L}$ natural operations of differentiation, integration, and composition, establish the basic properties of these operations, and characterize these operations uniquely by such properties.

Homogeneous Universal H-fields

We consider derivations $\partial$ on Conway's field $\mathbf{No}$ of surreal numbers such that the ordered differential field $(\mathbf{No},\partial)$ has constant field $\mathbb{R}$ and is a model of the model companion of the theory of $H$-fields with small derivation. We show that this determines $(\mathbf{No},\partial)$ uniquely up to isomorphism, and that this structure is absolutely homogeneous universal for models of this theory with constant field $\mathbb{R}$.

On numbers, germs, and transseries

Germs of real-valued functions, surreal numbers, and transseries are three ways to enrich the real continuum by infinitesimal and infinite quantities. Each of these comes with naturally interacting notions of ordering and derivative. The category of $H$-fields provides a common framework for the relevant algebraic structures. We give an exposition of our results on the model theory of $H$-fields, and we report on recent progress in unifying germs, surreal numbers, and transseries from the point of view of asymptotic differential algebra.

Bounded pregeometries and pairs of fields

A definable set in a pair (K, k) of algebraically closed fields is co-analyzable relative to the subfield k of the pair if and only if it is almost internal to k. To prove this and some related results for tame pairs of real closed fields we introduce a certain kind of bounded pregeometry for such pairs.

Dimension in the realm of transseries

Let $\mathbb T$ be the differential field of transseries. We establish some basic properties of the dimension of a definable subset of ${\mathbb T}^n$, also in relation to its codimension in the ambient space ${\mathbb T}^n$. The case of dimension $0$ is of special interest, and can be characterized both in topological terms (discreteness) and in terms of the Herwig-Hrushovski-Macpherson notion of co-analyzability. The proofs use results by the authors from "Asymptotic Differential Algebra and Model Theory of Transseries", the axiomatic framework for "dimension" in [L. van den Dries, "Dimension of definable sets, algebraic boundedness and Henselian fields", Ann. Pure Appl. Logic 45 (1989), no. 2, 189-209], and facts about co-analyzability from [B. Herwig, E. Hrushovski, D. Macpherson, "Interpretable groups, stably embedded sets, and Vaughtian pairs", J. London Math. Soc. (2003) 68, no. 1, 1-11].

The surreal numbers as a universal H-field

We show that the natural embedding of the differential field of transseries into Conway's field of surreal numbers with the Berarducci-Mantova derivation is an elementary embedding. We also prove that any Hardy field embeds into the field of surreals with the Berarducci-Mantova derivation.

Towards a Model Theory for Transseries

The differential field of transseries extends the field of real Laurent series, and occurs in various context: asymptotic expansions, analytic vector fields, o-minimal structures, to name a few. We give an overview of the algebraic and model-theoretic aspects of this differential field, and report on our efforts to understand its first-order theory.

Equivalence of Valued Fields with Valuation Preserving Automorphism

We improve results of Belair, Macintyre, and Scanlon on valued fields with a valuation preserving automorphism by weakening their assumptions on the residue difference field. In the equicharacteristic zero case we also determine the induced structure on the residue difference field and the value group.

Locally Compact Contractive Local Groups

We study locally compact contractive local groups, that is, locally compact local groups with a contractive pseudo-automorphism. We prove that if such an object is locally connected, then it is locally isomorphic to a Lie group. We also prove a related structure theorem for locally compact contractive local groups which are not necessarily locally connected. These results are local analogues of theorems for locally compact contractive groups.

Triangulation in o-minimal fields with standard part map

In answering questions from arXiv:0901.2337v1 we prove a triangulation result that is of independent interest. In more detail, let R be an o-minimal field with a proper convex subring V, and let st: V \to k be the corresponding standard part map. Under a mild assumption on (R,V) we show that definable subsets X of V^n admit a triangulation that induces a triangulation of its standard part st(X).
