Boundary blow-up solutions in the unit ball : asymptotics, uniqueness and symmetry

We calculate the full asymptotic expansion of boundary blow-up so- lutions, for any nonlinearity f . Our approach enables us to state sharp qualitative results regarding uniqueness and ra- dial symmetry of solutions, as well as a characterization of nonlinearities for which the blow-up rate is universal. At last, we study in more detail the standard nonlinearities f (u) = u^p, p > 1

Stable solutions of $-Δu = f(u)$ in $\R^N$

The paper proves Liouville-type results for stable solutions of semilinear elliptic PDEs with convex nonlinearity, posed on the entire Euclidean space. Extensions to solutions which are stable outside a compact set are also presented.

Perturbing singular solutions of the Gelfand problem

he equation $-Δu = λe^u$ posed in the unit ball $B \subseteq \R^N$, with homogeneous Dirichlet condition $u|_{\partial B} = 0$, has the singular solution $U=\log\frac1{|x|^2}$ when $λ= 2(N-2)$. If $N\ge 4$ we show that under small deformations of the ball there is a singular solution $(u,λ)$ close to $(U,2(N-2))$. In dimension $N\ge 11$ it corresponds to the extremal solution -- the one associated to the largest $λ$ for which existence holds. In contrast, we prove that if the deformation is sufficiently large then even when $N\ge 10$, the extremal solution remains bounded in many cases.

Stable solutions for the bilaplacian with exponential nonlinearity

Let $λ^*>0$ denote the largest possible value of $λ$ such that \begin{align*} \left\{\begin{aligned} Δ^2 u & = \la e^u && \text{in $B $} u &= \pd{u}{n} = 0 && \text{on $ \pa B $} \end{aligned} \right. \end{align*} has a solution, where $B$ is the unit ball in $\R^N$ and $n$ is the exterior unit normal vector. We show that for $λ=λ^*$ this problem possesses a unique {\em weak} solution $u^*$. We prove that $u^*$ is smooth if $N\le 12$ and singular when $N\ge 13$, in which case $ u^*(r) = - 4 \log r + \log (8(N-2)(N-4) / λ^*) + o(1)$ as $r\to 0$. We also consider the problem with general constant Dirichlet boundary conditions.

Singular elliptic problems with convection term in anisotropic media

We are concerned with singular elliptic problems of the form $-Δu\pm p(d(x))g(u)=\la f(x,u)+μ|\nabla u|^a$ in $Ω,$ where $Ω$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\RR^N$, $d(x)={\rm dist}(x,\partialΩ),$ $\la>0,$ $μ\in\RR$, $0<a\leq 2$, and $f,k$ are nonnegative and nondecreasing functions. We assume that $p(d(x))$ is a positive weight with possible singular behavior on the boundary of $Ω$ and that the nonlinearity $g$ is unbounded around the origin. Taking into account the competition between the anisotropic potential $p(d(x))$, the convection term $|\nabla u|^a$, and the singular nonlinearity $g$, we establish various existence and nonexistence results.
