Properties of the Conformal Yangian in Scalar and Gauge Field Theories

Properties of the SO(2,n) Yangian acting on scalar and gauge fields are presented. This differential operator representation of the infinite-dimensional extension of the conformal algebra SO(2,n) is proved to satisfy the Serre relation for arbitrary spacetime dimension n for off-shell scalar theory, but only on shell and for n=4 in the gauge theory. The SO(2,n) Yangian acts simply on the off-shell kinematic invariants $(k_I+k_{I+1}+ ...)^2$, and it annihilates individual off-shell scalar $λϕ^3$ Feynman tree graphs for n=6 if the differential operator representation is extended by graph dependent evaluation terms. The SO(2,4) Yangian level one generators are shown to act in a compact way on pure Yang-Mills gluon tree amplitudes. The action of the Yangian on the scattering polynomials of a CHY formalism is also described.

Off-Shell CHY Amplitudes and Feynman Graphs

A polynomial form is established for the off-shell CHY scattering equations proposed by Lam and Yao. Re-expressing this in terms of independent Mandelstam invariants provides a new expression for the polynomial scattering equations, immediately valid off shell, which makes it evident that they yield the off-shell amplitudes given by massless $ϕ^3$ Feynman graphs. A CHY expression for individual Feynman graphs, valid even off shell, is established through a recurrence relation.

General Solution of the Scattering Equations

The scattering equations, originally introduced by Fairlie and Roberts in 1972 and more recently shown by Cachazo, He and Yuan to provide a kinematic basis for describing tree amplitudes for massless particles in arbitrary space-time dimension, have been reformulated in polynomial form. The scattering equations for N particles are equivalent to N-3 polynomial equations h_m=0, m=1,...,N-3, in N-3 variables, where h_m has degree m and is linear in the individual variables. Facilitated by this linearity, elimination theory is used to construct a single variable polynomial equation of degree (N-3)! determining the solutions. Δ_N is the sparse resultant of the system of polynomial scattering equations and it can be identified as the hyperdeterminant of a multidimensional matrix of border format within the terminology of Gel'fand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. Macaulay's Unmixedness Theorem is used to show that the polynomials of the scattering equations constitute a regular sequence, enabling the Hilbert series of the variety determined by the scattering equations to be calculated, independently showing that they have (N-3)! solutions.

Electric-magnetic Duality of Abelian Gauge Theory on the Four-torus, from the Fivebrane on T2 x T4, via their Partition Functions

We compute the partition function of four-dimensional abelian gauge theory on a general four-torus T4 with flat metric using Dirac quantization. In addition to an SL(4, Z) symmetry, it possesses SL(2,Z) symmetry that is electromagnetic S-duality. We show explicitly how this SL(2, Z) S-duality of the 4d abelian gauge theory has its origin in symmetries of the 6d (2,0) tensor theory, by computing the partition function of a single fivebrane compactified on T2 x T4, which has SL(2,Z) x SL(4,Z) symmetry. If we identify the couplings of the abelian gauge theory τ= {θ\over 2π} + i{4π\over e^2} with the complex modulus of the T2 torus, τ= β^2 + i {R_1\over R_2}, then in the small T2 limit, the partition function of the fivebrane tensor field can be factorized, and contains the partition function of the 4d gauge theory. In this way the SL(2,Z) symmetry of the 6d tensor partition function is identified with the S-duality symmetry of the 4d gauge partition function. Each partition function is the product of zero mode and oscillator contributions, where the SL(2,Z) acts suitably. For the 4d gauge theory, which has a Lagrangian, this product redistributes when using path integral quantization.

The Polynomial Form of the Scattering Equations

The scattering equations, recently proposed by Cachazo, He and Yuan as providing a kinematic basis for describing tree amplitudes for massless particles in arbitrary space-time dimension (including scalars, gauge bosons and gravitons), are reformulated in polynomial form. The scattering equations for $N$ particles are shown to be equivalent to a Moebius invariant system of $N-3$ equations, $\tilde h_m=0$, $2 \leq m \leq N-2$, in $N$ variables, where $\tilde h_m$ is a homogeneous polynomial of degree m, with the exceptional property of being linear in each variable taken separately. Fixing the Moebius invariance appropriately, yields polynomial equations $h_m=0$, $1 \leq m \leq N-3$, in $N-3$ variables, where $h_m$ has degree $m$. The linearity of the equations in the individual variables facilitates computation, e.g the elimination of variables to obtain single variable equations determining the solutions. Expressions are given for the tree amplitudes in terms of the $\tilde h_m$ and $h_m$. The extension to the massive case for scalar particles is described and the special case of four dimensional space-time is discussed.

Proof of the Formula of Cachazo, He and Yuan for Yang-Mills Tree Amplitudes in Arbitrary Dimension

A proof is given of the formula, recently proposed by Cachazo, He and Yuan (CHY) for gluon tree amplitudes in pure Yang-Mills theory in arbitrary dimension. The approach is to first establish the corresponding result for massless $ϕ^3$ theory using the BCFW recurrence relation and then to extend this to the gauge theory case. Additionally, it is shown that the scattering equations introduced by CHY can be generalized to massive particles, enabling the description of tree amplitudes for massive $ϕ^3$ theory.

Partition Functions for Maxwell Theory on the Five-torus and for the Fivebrane on S1XT5

We compute the partition function of five-dimensional abelian gauge theory on a five-torus T5 with a general flat metric using the Dirac method of quantizing with constraints. We compare this with the partition function of a single fivebrane compactified on S1 times T5, which is obtained from the six-torus calculation of Dolan and Nappi. The radius R1 of the circle S1 is set to the dimensionful gauge coupling constant g^2= 4π^2 R1. We find the two partition functions are equal only in the limit where R1 is small relative to T5, a limit which removes the Kaluza-Klein modes from the 6d sum. This suggests the 6d N=(2,0) tensor theory on a circle is an ultraviolet completion of the 5d gauge theory, rather than an exact quantum equivalence.

Complete Equivalence Between Gluon Tree Amplitudes in Twistor String Theory and in Gauge Theory

The gluon tree amplitudes of open twistor string theory, defined as contour integrals over the ACCK link variables, are shown to satisfy the BCFW relations, thus confirming that they coincide with the corresponding amplitudes in gauge field theory. In this approach, the integration contours are specified as encircling the zeros of certain constraint functions that force the appropriate relation between the link variables and the twistor string world-sheet variables. To do this, methods for calculating the tree amplitudes using link variables are developed further including diagrammatic methods for organizing and performing the calculations.

Yangian in the Twistor String

We study symmetries of the quantized open twistor string. In addition to global PSL(4|4) symmetry, we find non-local conserved currents. The associated non-local charges lead to Ward identities which show that these charges annihilate the string gluon tree amplitudes, and have the same form as symmetries of amplitudes in N=4 super conformal Yang Mills theory. We describe how states of the open twistor string form a realization of the PSL(4|4) Yangian superalgebra.

General Split Helicity Gluon Tree Amplitudes in Open Twistor String Theory

We evaluate all split helicity gluon tree amplitudes in open twistor string theory. We show that these amplitudes satisfy the BCFW recurrence relations restricted to the split helicity case and, hence, that these amplitudes agree with those of gauge theory. To do this we make a particular choice of the sextic constraints in the link variables that determine the poles contributing to the contour integral expression for the amplitudes. Using the residue theorem to re-express this integral in terms of contributions from poles at rational values of the link variables, which we determine, we evaluate the amplitudes explicitly, regaining the gauge theory results of Britto et al.

Gluon Tree Amplitudes in Open Twistor String Theory

We show how the link variables of Arkani-Hamed, Cachazo, Cheung and Kaplan (ACCK), can be used to compute general gluon tree amplitudes in the twistor string. They arise from instanton sectors labelled by d, with d=n-1, where n is the number of negative helicities. Read backwards, this shows how the various forms for the tree amplitudes studied by ACCK can be grouped into contour integrals whose structure implies the existence of an underlying string theory.

Conformal Supergravity Tree Amplitudes from Open Twistor String Theory

We display the vertex operators for all states in the conformal supergravity sector of the twistor string, as outlined by Berkovits and Witten. These include `dipole' states, which are pairs of supergravitons that do not diagonalize the translation generators. We use canonical quantization of the open string version of Berkovits, and compute N-point tree level scattering amplitudes for gravitons, gluons and scalars. We reproduce the Berkovits-Witten formula for maximal helicity violating (MHV) amplitudes (which they derived using path integrals), and extend their results to the dipole pairs. We compare these trees with those of Einstein gravity field theory.

Current Algebra on the Torus

We derive the N-point one-loop correlation functions for the currents of an arbitrary affine Kac-Moody algebra. The one-loop amplitudes, which are elliptic functions defined on the torus Riemann surface, are specified by group invariant tensors and certain constant tau-dependent functions. We compute the elliptic functions via a generating function, and explicitly construct the invariant tensor functions recursively in terms of Young tableaux. The lowest tensors are related to the character formula of the representation of the affine algebra. These general current algebra loop amplitudes provide a building block for open twistor string theory, among other applications.

Tree and Loop Amplitudes in Open Twistor String Theory

We compute the one-loop gluon amplitude for the open twistor string model of Berkovits, using a symmetric form of the vertex operators. We discuss the classical solutions in various topologies and instanton sectors and the canonical quantization of the world sheet Lagrangian. We derive the N-point functions for the gluon tree and one-loop amplitudes, and calculate a general one-loop expression for the current algebra.

Strings and Noncommutativity

In these talks we review some of the recent results on open strings and noncommutative gauge theories, starting from the early calculations of open strings in a constant electromagnetic background. We discuss both the neutral string and the charged string. In the latter case, the scaling limit that leads to noncommutative abelian gauge theory can be generalized to a scaling limit in which multiple noncommutativity parameters enter. Our approach corresponds to expanding a theory with U(N) Chan-Paton factors around a background U(1)^N gauge field with different magnetic fields in each U(1). This scaling limit can be interpreted in terms of a matrix model. We also describe an open string model with a time-dependent noncommutativity parameter. This model is the open string version of a WZW model based on a non-semi-simple group. It has a time-dependent background, and a spacetime metric of the plane wave type supported by a Neveu-Schwarz two-form potential.

Noncommutativity in a Time-Dependent Background

We compute a time-dependent noncommutativity parameter in a model with a time-dependent background, a space-time metric of the plane wave type supported by a Neveu-Schwarz two-form potential. This model is an open string version of the WZW model based on a non-semi-simple group previously studied by Nappi and Witten. The background we study is not conformally invariant. We consider a light-cone action for the sigma-model, compute the worldsheet propagator, and use it to derive a time-dependent noncommutativity parameter.

Spin Models and Superconformal Yang-Mills Theory

We apply novel techniques in planar superconformal Yang-Mills theory which stress the role of the Yangian algebra. We compute the first two Casimirs of the Yangian, which are identified with the first two local abelian Hamiltonians with periodic boundary conditions, and show that they annihilate the chiral primary states. We streamline the derivation of the R-matrix in a conventional spin model, and extend this computation to the gauge theory. We comment on higher-loop corrections and higher-loop integrability.

A Relation Between Approaches to Integrability in Superconformal Yang-Mills Theory

We make contact between the infinite-dimensional non-local symmetry of the typeIIB superstring on AdS5xS5 worldsheet theory and a non-abelian infinite-dimensional symmetry algebra for the weakly coupled superconformal gauge theory. We explain why the planar limit of the one-loop dilatation operator is the Hamiltonian of a spin chain, and show that it commutes with the g*2 N = 0 limit of the non-abelian charges.
