Fractional Fourier transforms on $L^p$ and applications

This paper is devoted to the $L^p(\mathbb R)$ theory of the fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) for $1\le p < 2$. In view of the special structure of the FRFT, we study FRFT properties of $L^1$ functions, via the introduction of a suitable chirp operator. However, in the $L^1(\mathbb{R})$ setting, problems of convergence arise even when basic manipulations of functions are performed. We overcome such issues and study the FRFT inversion problem via approximation by suitable means, such as the fractional Gauss and Abel means. We also obtain the regularity of fractional convolution and results on pointwise convergence of FRFT means. Finally we discuss $L^p$ multiplier results and a Littlewood-Paley theorem associated with FRFT.

The multilinear Hormander multiplier theorem with a Lorentz-Sobolev condition

In this article, we provide a multilinear version of the Hörmander multiplier theorem with a Lorentz-Sobolev space condition. The work is motivated by the recent result of the first author and Slavíková where an analogous version of classical Hörmander multiplier theorem was obtained; this version is sharp in many ways and reduces the number of indices that appear in the statement of the theorem. As a natural extension of the linear case, in this work, we prove that if $mn/2 1$.

A limited-range Calderón-Zygmund theorem

For a limited range of indices $p$, we obtain $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ boundedness for singular integral operators whose kernels satisfy a condition weaker than the typical Hörmander smoothness estimate. These operators are assumed to be bounded (or weakly bounded) on $L^{s}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for some index $s$. Our estimates are obtained via interpolation from the appropriate weak-type estimates. We provide two proofs of this result. One proof is based on the Calderón-Zygmund decomposition, while the other uses ideas of Nazarov, Treil, and Volberg.

The Hörmander Multiplier Theorem III: The complete bilinear case via interpolation

We develop a special multilinear complex interpolation theorem that allows us to prove an optimal version of the bilinear Hörmander multiplier theorem concerning symbols that lie in the Sobolev space $L^r_s(\mathbb R^{2n})$, $2\le r<\infty$, $rs>2n$, uniformly over all annuli. More precisely, given a smoothness index $s$, we find the largest open set of indices $(1/p_1,1/p_2 )$ for which we have boundedness for the associated bilinear multiplier operator from $L^{p_1}(\mathbb R^{ n})\times L^{p_2} (\mathbb R^{ n})$ to $ L^p(\mathbb R^{ n})$ when $1/p=1/p_1+1/p_2$, $1<p_1,p_2<\infty$.

Maximal operators associated with bilinear multipliers of limited decay

Results analogous to those proved by Rubio de Francia are obtained for a class of maximal functions formed by dilations of bilinear multiplier operators of limited decay. We focus our attention to $L^2\times L^2\to L^1$ estimates. We discuss two applications: the boundedness of the bilinear maximal Bochner-Riesz operator and of the bilinear spherical maximal operator. For the latter we improve the known results by reducing the dimension restriction from $n\ge 8$ to $n\ge 4$.

Sharp inequalities for linear combinations of orthogonal martingales

For any two real-valued continuous-path martingales $X=\{X_t\}_{t\geq 0}$ and $Y=\{Y_t\}_{t\geq 0}$, with $X$ and $Y$ being orthogonal and $Y$ being differentially subordinate to $X$, we obtain sharp $L^p$ inequalities for martingales of the form $aX+bY$ with $a, b$ real numbers. The best $L^p$ constant is equal to the norm of the operator $aI+bH$ from $L^p$ to $L^p$, where $H$ is the Hilbert transform on the circle or real line. The values of these norms were found by Hollenbeck, Kalton and Verbitsky \cite{HKV}.

$L^2\times L^2 \to L^1$ boundedness criteria

We obtain a sharp $L^2\times L^2 \to L^1$ boundedness criterion for a class of bilinear operators associated with a multiplier given by a signed sum of dyadic dilations of a given function, in terms of the $L^q$ integrability of this function; precisely we show that boundedness holds if and only if $q<4$. We discuss applications of this result concerning bilinear rough singular integrals and bilinear dyadic spherical maximal functions. Our second result is an optimal $L^2\times L^2\to L^1$ boundedness criterion for bilinear operators associated with multipliers with $L^\infty$ derivatives. This result provides the main tool in the proof of the first theorem and is also manifested in terms of the $L^q$ integrability of the multiplier. The optimal range is $q<4$ which, in the absence of Plancherel's identity on $L^1$, should be compared to $q=\infty$ in the classical $L^2\to L^2$ boundedness for linear multiplier operators.

A sharp version of the Hörmander multiplier theorem

We provide an improvement of the Hörmander multiplier theorem in which the Sobolev space $L^r_s(\mathbb R^n)$ with integrability index $r$ and smoothness index $s>n/r$ is replaced by the Sobolev space with smoothness $s$ built upon the Lorentz space $L^{n/s,1}(\mathbb R^n)$.

Bilinear Spherical Maximal Function

We obtain boundedness for the bilinear spherical maximal function in a range of exponents that includes the Banach triangle and a range of $L^p$ with $p<1$. We also obtain counterexamples that are asymptotically optimal with our positive results on certain indices as the dimension tends to infinity.

Multiplier conditions for Boundedness into Hardy spaces

In the present work, we find useful and explicit necessary and sufficient conditions for linear and multilinear multiplier operators of Coifman-Meyer type, finite sum of products of Calderón-Zygmund operators, and also of intermediate types to be bounded from a product of Lebesgue or Hardy spaces into a Hardy space. These conditions state that the symbols of the multipliers $σ(ξ_1,\dots , ξ_m)$ and their derivatives vanish on the hyperplane $ξ_1+\cdots+ξ_m=0$.

Conditions for Boundedness into Hardy spaces

We obtain boundedness from a product of Lebesgue or Hardy spaces into Hardy spaces under suitable cancellation conditions for a large class of multilinear operators that includes the Coifman-Meyer class, sums of products of linear Calderon-Zygmund operators and combinations of these two types.

Some Problems in Harmonic Analysis

In May 2016, we organized a conference in harmonic analysis in honor of Professor Michael Christ, on the campus of the University of Wisconsin in Madison. We are happy to present sixteen open problems, almost all of which were contributed by participants of a problem session held in the afternoon of May 19, 2016.

Multilinear Multiplier Theorems and Applications

We obtain new multilinear multiplier theorems for symbols of restricted smoothness which lie locally in certain Sobolev spaces. We provide applications concerning the boundedness of the commutators of Calderón and Calderón-Coifman-Journé.

The Hörmander multiplier theorem I: The Linear Case

We discuss $L^p(\mathbb R^n)$ boundedness for Fourier multiplier operators that satisfy the hypotheses of the Hörmander multiplier theorem in terms of an optimal condition that relates the distance $|\frac 1p-\frac12|$ to the smoothness $s$ of the associated multiplier measured in some Sobolev norm. We provide new counterexamples to justify the optimality of the condition $|\frac 1p-\frac12|<\frac sn$ and we discuss the endpoint case $|\frac 1p-\frac12|=\frac sn$.

The Hörmander multiplier theorem, II: The bilinear local $L^2$ case

We use wavelets of tensor product type to obtain the boundedness of bilinear multiplier operators on $\mathbb R^n\times \mathbb R^n$ associated with Hörmander multipliers on $\mathbb R^{2n}$ with minimal smoothness. We focus on the local $L^2$ case and we obtain boundedness under the minimal smoothness assumption of $n/2$ derivatives. We also provide counterexamples to obtain necessary conditions for all sets of indices.

Rough Bilinear Singular Integrals

We study the rough bilinear singular integral, introduced by Coifman and Meyer , $$ T_Ω(f,g)(x)=p.v. \! \int_{\mathbb R^{n}}\! \int_{\mathbb R^{n}}\! |(y,z)|^{-2n} Ω((y,z)/|(y,z)|)f(x-y)g(x-z) dydz, $$ when $Ω$ is a function in $L^q(\mathbb S^{2n-1})$ with vanishing integral and $2\le q\le \infty$. When $q=\infty$ we obtain boundedness for $T_Ω$ from $L^{p_1}(\mathbb R^n)\times L^{p_2}(\mathbb R^n)$ to $ L^p(\mathbb R^n) $ when $1<p_1, p_2<\infty$ and $1/p=1/p_1+1/p_2$. For $q=2$ we obtain that $T_Ω$ is bounded from $L^{2}(\mathbb R^n)\times L^{ 2}(\mathbb R^n)$ to $ L^1(\mathbb R^n) $. For $q$ between $2$ and infinity we obtain the analogous boundedness on a set of indices around the point $(1/2,1/2,1)$. To obtain our results we introduce a new bilinear technique based on tensor-type wavelet decompositions.
