A Reynolds-semi-robust H(div)-conforming method for unsteady incompressible power-law flows

In this work, we prove what appear to be the first Reynolds-semi-robust and pressure-robust velocity error estimates for an H(div)-conforming approximation of unsteady incompressible flows of power-law type fluids. The proposed methods hinges on a discontinuous Galerkin approximation of the viscous term and a reinforced upwind-type stabilization of the convective term. The derived velocity error estimates account for pre-asymptotic orders of convergence observed in convection-dominated flows through regime-dependent estimates of the error contributions. A complete set of numerical results validate the theoretical findings.

Key challenges and bridges among convergence analysis techniques for polytopal methods

Polytopal methods provide a flexible framework for the numerical approximation of partial differential equations on general meshes. Their convergence analysis raises specific challenges due to their inherently non-conforming nature and, in many cases, the fully discrete nature of their solution. Two main techniques are considered: the virtual-function approach, used, e.g., in the context of Virtual Element Methods, and the fully discrete approach, which underlies, e.g., the Discrete de Rham method. We introduce here a novel framework based on the notion of conforming liftings, namely bounded and consistent mappings from the discrete space into the continuous space. This approach bridges the virtual and fully discrete viewpoints, clarifies the role of norm equivalence for virtual functions, and leads to a decomposition of the consistency error usable for polytopal methods. The three approaches are demonstrated on a model problem, which provides the opportunity to discuss relevant technical points. Bridges with the convergence properties of discrete differential complexes are also built.

Robust H(curl)-based finite element methods for the incompressible MHD system

We propose and analyze a class of finite element methods for the time-dependent incompressible magnetohydrodynamics system based on $H(\mathrm{curl})$-conforming discretizations for both the velocity and the magnetic field. This choice is guided by the aim of developing methods that are also suitable for the types of solutions arising in problems posed on nonconvex domains. Within this framework, we introduce three stabilized formulations, and study how the stabilization mechanisms employed influence their structural properties. In particular, we focus on suitability for nonconvex polyhedral domains, the need for Lagrange multipliers for the magnetic field, pressure-robustness, and quasi-robustness with respect to both the fluid and magnetic Reynolds numbers. The proposed formulations are further assessed through numerical experiments, highlighting their practical performance.

Virtual Element methods for non-Newtonian shear-thickening fluid flow problems

In this work, we present a comprehensive theoretical analysis for Virtual Element discretizations of incompressible non-Newtonian flows governed by the Carreau-Yasuda constitutive law, in the shear-thickening regime (r > 2) including both degenerate (delta = 0) and non-degenerate (delta > 0) cases. The proposed Virtual Element method features two distinguishing advantages: the construction of an exactly divergence-free discrete velocity field and compatibility with general polygonal meshes. The analysis presented in this work extends a previous work, where only shear-thinning behavior (1 < r < 2) was considered. Indeed, the theoretical analysis of the shear-thickening setting requires several novel analytical tools, including: an inf-sup stability analysis of the discrete velocity-pressure coupling in non-Hilbertian norms, a stabilization term specifically designed to address the nonlinear structure as the exponent r > 2; and the introduction of a suitable discrete norm tailored to the underlying nonlinear constitutive relation. Numerical results demonstrate the practical performance of the proposed formulation.

A Reynolds-semi-robust method with hybrid velocity and pressure for the unsteady incompressible Navier--Stokes equations

In this paper we propose and analyze a new Finite Element method for the solution of the two- and three-dimensional incompressible Navier--Stokes equations based on a hybrid discretization of both the velocity and pressure variables. The proposed method is pressure-robust, i.e., irrotational forcing terms do not affect the approximation of the velocity, and Reynolds-quasi-robust, with error estimates that, for smooth enough exact solutions, do not depend on the inverse of the viscosity. We carry out an in-depth convergence analysis highlighting pre-asymptotic convergence rates and validate the theoretical findings with a complete set of numerical experiments.

Arbitrary-order pressure-robust DDR and VEM methods for the Stokes problem on polyhedral meshes

This paper contains two major contributions. First we derive, following the discrete de Rham (DDR) and Virtual Element (VEM) paradigms, pressure-robust methods for the Stokes equations that support arbitrary orders and polyhedral meshes. Unlike other methods presented in the literature, pressure-robustness is achieved here without resorting to an $\boldsymbol{H}({\rm div})$-conforming construction on a submesh, but rather projecting the volumetric force onto the discrete $\boldsymbol{H}({\bf curl})$ space. The cancellation of the pressure error contribution stems from key commutation properties of the underlying DDR and VEM complexes. The pressure-robust error estimates in $h^{k+1}$ (with $h$ denoting the meshsize and $k\ge 0$ the polynomial degree of the DDR or VEM complex) are proven theoretically and supported by a panel of three-dimensional numerical tests. The second major contribution of the paper is an in-depth study of the relations between the DDR and VEM approaches. We show, in particular, that a complex developed following one paradigm admits a reformulation in the other, and that couples of related DDR and VEM complexes satisfy commuting diagram properties with the degrees of freedom maps.

A Péclet-robust discontinuous Galerkin method for nonlinear diffusion with advection

We analyze a Discontinuous Galerkin method for a problem with linear advection-reaction and $p$-type diffusion, with Sobolev indices $p\in (1, \infty)$. The discretization of the diffusion term is based on the full gradient including jump liftings and interior-penalty stabilization while, for the advective contribution, we consider a strengthened version of the classical upwind scheme. The developed error estimates track the dependence of the local contributions to the error on local Péclet numbers. A set of numerical tests supports the theoretical derivations.

The Virtual Element Method for the 3D Resistive Magnetohydrodynamic model

We present a four-field Virtual Element discretization for the time-dependent resistive Magnetohydrodynamics equations in three space dimensions, focusing on the semi-discrete formulation. The proposed method employs general polyhedral meshes and guarantees velocity and magnetic fields that are divergence free up to machine precision. We provide a full convergence analysis under suitable regularity assumptions, which is validated by some numerical tests.

Interpolation and stability estimates for edge and face virtual elements of general order

We develop interpolation error estimates for general order standard and serendipity edge and face virtual elements in two and three dimensions. Contextually, we investigate the stability properties of the associated L2 discrete bilinear forms. These results are fundamental tools in the analysis of general order virtual elements, e.g., for electromagnetic problems.

Interpolation and stability properties of low order face and edge virtual element spaces

We analyse the interpolation properties of 2D and 3D low order virtual element face and edge spaces, which generalize Nédélec and Raviart-Thomas polynomials to polygonal-polyhedral meshes. Moreover, we investigate the stability properties of the associated $L^2$ discrete bilinear forms, which typically appear in the virtual element discretization of problems in electromagnetism.

Virtual Elements for a shear-deflection formulation of Reissner-Mindlin plates

We present a virtual element method for the Reissner-Mindlin plate bending problem which uses shear strain and deflection as discrete variables without the need of any reduction operator. The proposed method is conforming in $[H^{1}(Ω)]^2 \times H^2(Ω)$ and has the advantages of using general polygonal meshes and yielding a direct approximation of the shear strains. The rotations are then obtained by a simple postprocess from the shear strain and deflection. We prove convergence estimates with involved constants that are uniform in the thickness $t$ of the plate. Finally, we report numerical experiments which allow us to assess the performance of the method.

Exponential convergence of the hp Virtual Element Method with corner singularities

In the present work, we analyze the $hp$ version of Virtual Element methods for the 2D Poisson problem. We prove exponential convergence of the energy error employing sequences of polygonal meshes geometrically refined, thus extending the classical choices for the decomposition in the $hp$ Finite Element framework to very general decomposition of the domain. A new stabilization for the discrete bilinear form with explicit bounds in $h$ and $p$ is introduced. Numerical experiments validate the theoretical results. We also exhibit a numerical comparison between $hp$ Virtual Elements and $hp$ Finite Elements.

A virtual element method for the acoustic vibration problem

We analyze in this paper a virtual element approximation for the acoustic vibration problem. We consider a variational formulation relying only on the fluid displacement and propose a discretization by means of H(div) virtual elements with vanishing rotor. Under standard assumptions on the meshes, we show that the resulting scheme provides a correct approximation of the spectrum and prove optimal order error estimates. With this end, we prove approximation properties of the proposed virtual elements. We also report some numerical tests supporting our theoretical results.
