Range Value-at-Risk: Multivariate and Extreme Values

The concept of univariate Range Value-at-Risk, presented by Cont et al. (2010), is extended in the multidimensional setting. Traditional risk measures are not well suited when dealing with heavy-tail distributions and infinite tail expectations. The multivariate definitions of robust truncated tail expectations are provided to overcome this problem. Robustness and other properties as well as empirical estimators are derived. Closed-form expressions and special cases in the extreme value framework are also discussed. Numerical and graphical examples are provided to examine the accuracy of the empirical estimators.

A Gd@C82-based single molecular electret device with switchable electrical polarization

Single molecular electrets exhibiting single molecule electric polarization switching have been long desired as a platform for extremely small non-volatile storage devices, although it is controversial because of the poor stability of single molecular electric dipoles. Here we study the single molecular device of GdC82, where the encapsulated Gd atom forms a charge center, and we have observed a gate controlled switching behavior between two sets of single electron transport stability diagrams. The switching is operated in a hysteresis loop with a coercive gate field of around 0.5Vnm. Theoretical calculations have assigned the two conductance diagrams to corresponding energy levels of two states that the Gd atom is trapped at two different sites of the C82 cage, which possess two different permanent electrical dipole orientations. The two dipole states are stabilized by the anisotropic energy and separated by a transition energy barrier of 70 meV. Such switching is then accessed to the electric field driven reorientation of individual dipole while overcoming the barriers by the coercive gate field, and demonstrates the creation of a single molecular electret.

Investigation of plasmonic evolution of atomically size-selected Au clusters by electron energy loss spectrum--from solid state to molecular scale

Versatile quantum modes emerge for plasmon describing the collective oscillations of free electrons in metallic nanoparticles when the particle sizes are greatly reduced. Rather than traditional nanoscale study, the understanding of quantum plasmon desires extremal atomic control of the nanoparticles, calling for size dependent plasmon measurement over a series of nanoparticles with atomically adjustable atom number over several orders of magnitude. Here we report the N dependent plasmonic evolution of atomically size selected gold particles with N= 100 70000 using electron energy loss (EEL) spectroscopy in a scanning transmission electron microscope. The EEL mapping assigns a feature at 2.7 eV as the bulk plasmon and another at 2.4 eV as surface plasmon, which evolution reveals three regimes. When N decreases from 70000 to 887, the bulk plasmon stays unchanged while the surface plasmon exhibits a slight red shift from 2.4 to 2.3 eV. It can be understood by the dominance of classical plasmon physics and electron boundary scattering induced retardation. When N further decreases from 887 to 300, the bulk plasmon disappears totally and the surface plasmon shows a steady blueshift, which indicates that the quantum confinement emerges and modifies the intraband transition. When N 100 300, the plasmon is split to three fine features, which is attributed to superimposed single electron transitions between the quantized molecular like energy level by the time dependent density functional theory calculations. The surface plasmon's excitation ratio has a scaling law with an exponential dependence on N ( N^0.669), essentially the square of the radius. A unified evolution picture from the classical to quantum, molecular plasmon is thus demonstrated.

Nearly quantized conductance plateau of vortex zero mode in an iron-based superconductor

Majorana zero-modes (MZMs) are spatially-localized zero-energy fractional quasiparticles with non-Abelian braiding statistics that hold a great promise for topological quantum computing. Due to its particle-antiparticle equivalence, an MZM exhibits robust resonant Andreev reflection and 2e2/h quantized conductance at low temperature. By utilizing variable-tunnel-coupled scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we study tunneling conductance of vortex bound states on FeTe0.55Se0.45 superconductors. We report observations of conductance plateaus as a function of tunnel coupling for zero-energy vortex bound states with values close to or even reaching the 2e2/h quantum conductance. In contrast, no such plateau behaviors were observed on either finite energy Caroli-de Genne-Matricon bound states or in the continuum of electronic states outside the superconducting gap. This unique behavior of the zero-mode conductance reaching a plateau strongly supports the existence of MZMs in this iron-based superconductor, which serves as a promising single-material platform for Majorana braiding at a relatively high temperature.

Reconsidering Design of Multi-Antenna NOMA Systems with Limited Feedback

We provide in this paper a comprehensive solution to the design, performance analysis, and optimization of a multi-antenna non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) system for multiuser downlink communications under a general limited channel state information (CSI) feedback framework for frequency division duplex mode. We design a general framework including user clustering, joint power and bits allocation, CSI quantization and feedback, signal superposition coding, transmit beamforming, and successive interference cancellation at receivers. Then, we conduct a mathematically strict performance analysis of the considered system, and obtain a closed-form lower bound on the ergodic rate of each user in terms of transmit power, CSI quantization accuracy and channel conditions. For exploiting the potentials of multiple-antenna techniques in NOMA systems, we jointly optimize two key parameters, i.e., transmit power and the number of feedback bits allocated to each user, and propose low-complexity closed-form solutions. Moreover, through asymptotic analysis, we reveal the interactions between the main system parameters and their impacts on the joint power and feedback bits allocation result, and hence show some guidelines on the system design. Finally, numerical results validate the correctness of our theoretical analysis and demonstrate the advantages of the proposed algorithms over the most related state of the art.

A new Majorana platform in an Fe-As bilayer superconductor

Recently, iron-chalcogenide superconductors have emerged as a new and promising platform for studying and manipulating Majorana zero mode (MZM). By combining topological band structure and superconductivity in a multiband material, they provide significant advantages such as higher superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and isolated Majorana mode. However, iron-chalcogenide superconductors, especially Fe(Te,Se), suffer from strong inhomogeneity which may hamper their practical application. On the other hand, some iron-pnictide (Fe-As) superconductors, such as LiFeAs, have been demonstrated to have a similar topological band structure, yet no MZM has been observed in its vortex cores, raising a question of universality of MZM presence in iron-based superconductors. In this work, by using high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we identify the first Fe-As superconductor CaKFe4As4 (Tc = 35 K) which has both the superconducting Dirac surface states and the MZMs inside its vortex cores. The topological band inversion is largely due to the down-shift of the pz band caused by the bilayer band folding in this material. More strikingly, the energies and spatial line profiles of MZM and multiple quantized Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon bound states observed inside the topological vortex can be accurately reproduced by a simple theoretical model derived from a surface Dirac cone, firmly establishing Majorana nature of the zero mode.

Summary of the 2018 CKM working group on semileptonic and leptonic $b$-hadron decays

A summary of WG II of the CKM 2018 conference on semileptonic and leptonic $b$-hadron decays is presented. This includes discussions on the CKM matrix element magitudes $|V_{ub}|$ and $|V_{cb}|$, lepton universality tests such as $R(D^{*})$ and leptonic decays. As is usual for semileptonic and leptonic decays, much discussion is devoted towards the interplay between theoretical QCD calculations and the experimental measurements.

Observation of half-integer level shift of vortex bound states in an iron-based superconductor

Vortices in topological superconductors host Majorana zero modes (MZMs), which are proposed to be building blocks of fault-tolerant topological quantum computers. Recently, a new single-material platform for realizing MZM has been discovered in iron-based superconductors, without involving hybrid semiconductor-superconductor structures. Here we report on a detailed scanning tunneling spectroscopy study of a FeTe0.55Se0.45 single crystal, revealing two distinct classes of vortices present in this system which differ by a half-integer level shift in the energy spectra of the vortex bound states. This level shift is directly tied with the presence or absence of zero-bias peak and also alters the ratios of higher energy levels from integer to half-odd-integer. Our model calculations fully reproduce the spectra of these two types of vortex bound states, suggesting the presence of topological and conventional superconducting regions that coexist within the same crystal. Our findings provide strong evidence for the topological nature of superconductivity in FeTe0.55Se0.45 and establish it as an excellent platform for further studies on MZMs.

Oscillating planar Hall response from the surface electrons in bulk crystal Sn doped Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S

We report the low-temperature magneto-transport in the bulk-insulating single crystal of topological insulator Sn doped Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S. The Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations appear with their reciprocal frequency proportional to cos/theta , demonstrating the dominant transport of topological surface states. While the magnetic field is rotating in the sample surface, the planar Hall effect arises with sizeable oscillations following a relation of cos/theta sin/theta . Its amplitude reaches the maximum at the lowest temperature and drops to nearly zero at the temperature higher than 100 K. All these evidences consolidate such planar Hall oscillations as a new golden criterion on the topological surface transport.

Evidence for Majorana bound state in an iron-based superconductor

The search for Majorana bound state (MBS) has recently emerged as one of the most active research areas in condensed matter physics, fueled by the prospect of using its non-Abelian statistics for robust quantum computation. A highly sought-after platform for MBS is two-dimensional topological superconductors, where MBS is predicted to exist as a zero-energy mode in the core of a vortex. A clear observation of MBS, however, is often hindered by the presence of additional low-lying bound states inside the vortex core. By using scanning tunneling microscope on the newly discovered superconducting Dirac surface state of iron-based superconductor FeTe1-xSex (x = 0.45, superconducting transition temperature Tc = 14.5 K), we clearly observe a sharp and non-split zero-bias peak inside a vortex core. Systematic studies of its evolution under different magnetic fields, temperatures, and tunneling barriers strongly suggest that this is the case of tunneling to a nearly pure MBS, separated from non-topological bound states which is moved away from the zero energy due to the high ratio between the superconducting gap and the Fermi energy in this material. This observation offers a new, robust platform for realizing and manipulating MBSs at a relatively high temperature.

Diagnosing the magnetic field-tuned symmetry nature of the topological electrons by conductance fluctuations in bulk-insulating BiSbTeSe2 devices

We extract the quantum conductance fluctuations and study its magnetic field dependence in the gate-dependent transport of the topological electrons in bulk-insulating BiSbTeSe2 devices. While increasing the magnetic field from 0 to 12 Tesla, the fluctuation magnitudes are found reduced by a ratio of sqrt(2) and form a quantized step. The step is observed both in n-type and p-type transport. It is also confirmed in the nonlocal measurements. This essentially demonstrates the breaking of the time reversal symmetry of the three-dimensional Z2 topological insulators.

Charmonium states in QCD-inspired quark potential model using Gaussian expansion method

We investigate the mass spectrum and electromagnetic processes of charmonium system with the nonperturbative treatment for the spin-dependent potentials, comparing the pure scalar and scalar-vector mixing linear confining potentials. It is revealed that the scalar-vector mixing confinement would be important for reproducing the mass spectrum and decay widths, and therein the vector component is predicted to be around 22%. With the state wave functions obtained via the full-potential Hamiltonian, the long-standing discrepancy in M1 radiative transitions of $J/ψ$ and $ψ^{\prime}$ are alleviated spontaneously. This work also intends to provide an inspection and suggestion for the possible $c\bar{c}$ among the copious higher charmonium-like states. Particularly, the newly observed X(4160) and X(4350) are found in the charmonium family mass spectrum as $M(2^1D_2)= 4164.9$ MeV and $M(3^3P_2)= 4352.4$ MeV, which strongly favor the $J^{PC}=2^{-+}, 2^{++}$ assignments respectively. The corresponding radiative transitions, leptonic and two-photon decay widths have been also predicted theoretically for the further experimental search.

The possible candidates of tetraquark : $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$

Using the chromomagnetic interaction Hamiltonian with proper account for the SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking, we have performed a schematic study on the masses of $S-$wave heavy tetraquarks as $bq\bar{b}\bar{q}$ ($q$ denotes $u$, $d$, $s$ quark). It is found that the numeral results for $bu\bar{b}\bar{d}$ or $bd\bar{b}\bar{u}$ with $1^{+}$ quantum number are 10612 MeV and 10683 MeV respectively, which are well compatible with the recent detected charged bottomonium-like $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$. Theoretically, we also investigate the possible tetraquark states of $1^{++}$ and $2^{+}$ due to the charge conjugation as the potential candidates for the updating experiments.
