Approximate the individually fair k-center with outliers

In this paper, we propose and investigate the individually fair $k$-center with outliers (IF$k$CO). In the IF$k$CO, we are given an $n$-sized vertex set in a metric space, as well as integers $k$ and $q$. At most $k$ vertices can be selected as the centers and at most $q$ vertices can be selected as the outliers. The centers are selected to serve all the not-an-outlier (i.e., served) vertices. The so-called individual fairness constraint restricts that every served vertex must have a selected center not too far way. More precisely, it is supposed that there exists at least one center among its $\lceil (n-q) / k \rceil$ closest neighbors for every served vertex. Because every center serves $(n-q) / k$ vertices on the average. The objective is to select centers and outliers, assign every served vertex to some center, so as to minimize the maximum fairness ratio over all served vertices, where the fairness ratio of a vertex is defined as the ratio between its distance with the assigned center and its distance with a $\lceil (n - q )/k \rceil_{\rm th}$ closest neighbor. As our main contribution, a 4-approximation algorithm is presented, based on which we develop an improved algorithm from a practical perspective.

Accelerating drug repurposing for COVID-19 via modeling drug mechanism of action with large scale gene-expression profiles

The novel coronavirus disease, named COVID-19, emerged in China in December 2019, and has rapidly spread around the world. It is clearly urgent to fight COVID-19 at global scale. The development of methods for identifying drug uses based on phenotypic data can improve the efficiency of drug development. However, there are still many difficulties in identifying drug applications based on cell picture data. This work reported one state-of-the-art machine learning method to identify drug uses based on the cell image features of 1024 drugs generated in the LINCS program. Because the multi-dimensional features of the image are affected by non-experimental factors, the characteristics of similar drugs vary greatly, and the current sample number is not enough to use deep learning and other methods are used for learning optimization. As a consequence, this study is based on the supervised ITML algorithm to convert the characteristics of drugs. The results show that the characteristics of ITML conversion are more conducive to the recognition of drug functions. The analysis of feature conversion shows that different features play important roles in identifying different drug functions. For the current COVID-19, Chloroquine and Hydroxychloroquine achieve antiviral effects by inhibiting endocytosis, etc., and were classified to the same community. And Clomiphene in the same community inibited the entry of Ebola Virus, indicated a similar MoAs that could be reflected by cell image.

MotionInput v2.0 supporting DirectX: A modular library of open-source gesture-based machine learning and computer vision methods for interacting and controlling existing software with a webcam

Touchless computer interaction has become an important consideration during the COVID-19 pandemic period. Despite progress in machine learning and computer vision that allows for advanced gesture recognition, an integrated collection of such open-source methods and a user-customisable approach to utilising them in a low-cost solution for touchless interaction in existing software is still missing. In this paper, we introduce the MotionInput v2.0 application. This application utilises published open-source libraries and additional gesture definitions developed to take the video stream from a standard RGB webcam as input. It then maps human motion gestures to input operations for existing applications and games. The user can choose their own preferred way of interacting from a series of motion types, including single and bi-modal hand gesturing, full-body repetitive or extremities-based exercises, head and facial movements, eye tracking, and combinations of the above. We also introduce a series of bespoke gesture recognition classifications as DirectInput triggers, including gestures for idle states, auto calibration, depth capture from a 2D RGB webcam stream and tracking of facial motions such as mouth motions, winking, and head direction with rotation. Three use case areas assisted the development of the modules: creativity software, office and clinical software, and gaming software. A collection of open-source libraries has been integrated and provide a layer of modular gesture mapping on top of existing mouse and keyboard controls in Windows via DirectX. With ease of access to webcams integrated into most laptops and desktop computers, touchless computing becomes more available with MotionInput v2.0, in a federated and locally processed method.

Giant Polarization and Abnormal Flexural Deformation in Bent Freestanding Perovskite Oxides

Recent realizations of ultrathin freestanding perovskite oxides offer a unique platform to probe novel properties in two-dimensional oxides. Here, we observed a giant flexoelectric response in freestanding BiFeO3 and SrTiO3 in their bent state arising from strain gradients up to 4x10e7/m, suggesting a promising approach for realizing extremely large polarizations. Additionally, a substantial reversible change in thickness was discovered in bent freestanding BiFeO3, which implies an unusual bending-expansion/shrinkage and thickness-dependence Poisson's ratios in this ferroelectric membrane that has never been seen before in crystalline materials. Our theoretical modeling reveals that this unprecedented flexural deformation within the membrane is attributable to a flexoelectricity-piezoelectricity interplay. The finding unveils intriguing nanoscale electromechanical properties and provides guidance for their practical applications in flexible nanoelectromechanical systems.

Stochastic Equation of Motion Approach to Fermionic Dissipative Dynamics. I. Formalism

In this work, we establish formally exact stochastic equations of motion (SEOM) theory to describe the dissipative dynamics of fermionic open systems. The construction of the SEOM is based on a stochastic decoupling of the dissipative interaction between the system and fermionic environment, and the influence of environmental fluctuations on the reduced system dynamics is characterized by stochastic Grassmann fields. Meanwhile, numerical realization of the time-dependent Grassmann fields has remained a long-standing challenge. To solve this problem, we propose a minimal auxiliary space (MAS) mapping scheme, with which the stochastic Grassmann fields are represented by conventional c-number fields along with a set of pseudo-levels. This eventually leads to a numerically feasible MAS-SEOM method. The important properties of the MAS-SEOM are analyzed by making connection to the well-established time-dependent perturbation theory and the hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) theory. The MAS-SEOM method provides a potentially promising approach for accurate and efficient simulation of fermionic open systems at ultra-low temperatures.

Stochastic Equation of Motion Approach to Fermionic Dissipative Dynamics. II. Numerical Implementation

This paper provides a detailed account of the numerical implementation of the stochastic equation of motion (SEOM) method for the dissipative dynamics of fermionic open quantum systems. To enable direct stochastic calculations, a minimal auxiliary space (MAS) mapping scheme is adopted, with which the time-dependent Grassmann fields are represented by c-numbers noises and a set of pseudo-operators. We elaborate on the construction of the system operators and pseudo-operators involved in the MAS-SEOM, along with the analytic expression for the particle current. The MASSEOM is applied to study the relaxation and voltage-driven dynamics of quantum impurity systems described by the single-level Anderson impurity model, and the numerical results are benchmarked against those of the highly accurate hierarchical equations of motion (HEOM) method. The advantages and limitations of the present MAS-SEOM approach are discussed extensively.

Stochastic Representation of Non-Markovian Fermionic Quantum Dissipation

Quantum Brownian motion plays a fundamental role in many areas of modern physics. In the path-integral formulation, the environmental quantum fluctuations driving the system dynamics can be characterized by auxiliary stochastic fields. For fermion bath environment the stochastic fields are Grassmann-valued, and cannot be represented by conventional classical numbers. In this Letter, we propose a strategy to map the nonclassical Grassmann fields onto Gaussian white noises along with a set of quantized pseudo-states. This results in a numerically feasible stochastic equation of motion (SEOM) method for fermionic open systems. The SEOM yields exact physical observables for noninteracting systems, and accurate approximate results for interacting systems. The practicality and accuracy of the proposed SEOM are exemplified by direct stochastic simulations conducted on a single-impurity Anderson model.

Ultrawide Band Gap β-Ga2O3 Nanomechanical Resonators with Spatially Visualized Multimode Motion

Beta gallium oxide (β-Ga2O3) is an emerging ultrawide band gap (4.5 - 4.9 eV) semiconductor with attractive properties for future power electronics, optoelectronics, and sensors for detecting gases and ultraviolet radiation. β-Ga2O3 thin films made by various methods are being actively studied toward such devices. Here, we report on the experimental demonstration of single-crystal β-Ga2O3 nanomechanical resonators using β-Ga2O3 nanoflakes grown via low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD). By investigating β-Ga2O3 circular drumhead structures, we demonstrate multimode nanoresonators up to the 6th mode in high and very high frequency (HF / VHF) bands, and also realize spatial mapping and visualization of the multimode motion. These measurements reveal a Young's modulus of E_Y = 261 GPa and anisotropic biaxial built-in tension of 37.5 MPa and 107.5 MPa. We find that thermal annealing can considerably improve the resonance characteristics, including ~40% upshift in frequency and ~90% enhancement in quality (Q) factor. This study lays a foundation for future exploration and development of mechanically coupled and tunable β-Ga2O3 electronic, optoelectronic, and physical sensing devices.

β-Ga2O3 NEMS Oscillator for Real-Time Middle Ultraviolet (MUV) Light Detection

We report on the first beta gallium oxide (β-Ga2O3) crystal feedback oscillator built by employing a vibrating β-Ga2O3 nanoresonator as the frequency reference for real-time middle ultraviolet (MUV) light detection. We fabricate suspended β-Ga2O3 nanodevices through synthesis of β-Ga2O3 nanoflakes using low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD), and dry transfer of nanoflakes on microtrenches. Open-loop tests reveal a resonance of the β-Ga2O3 device at ~30 MHz. A closed-loop oscillator is then realized by using a combined optical-electrical feedback circuitry, to perform real-time resonant sensing of MUV irradiation. The oscillator exposed to cyclic MUV irradiation exhibits resonant frequency downshifts, with a measured responsivity of $\mathscr{R}$ = -3.1 Hz/pW and a minimum detectable power of δPmin = 0.53 nW for MUV detection.

Negative differential resistance and magnetoresistance in zigzag borophene nanoribbons

We investigate the transport properties of pristine zigzag-edged borophene nanoribbons (ZBNRs) of different widths, using the fist-principles calculations. We choose ZBNRs with widths of 5 and 6 as odd and even widths. The differences of the quantum transport properties are found, where even-N BNRs and odd-N BNRs have different current-voltage relationships. Moreover, the negative differential resistance (NDR) can be observed within certain bias range in 5-ZBNR, while 6-ZBNR behaves as metal whose current rises with the increase of the voltage. The spin filter effect of 36% can be revealed when the two electrodes have opposite magnetization direction. Furthermore, the magnetoresistance effect appears to be in even-N ZBNRs, and the maximum value can reach 70%.

General laws of reflection and refraction for subwavelength phase grating

The general reflection and refraction laws at the metasurface with the abrupt phase shift were derived by two different methods of Fermat's principle and the boundary conditions respectively. It is found that one or two critical angles for total internal reflection exist when a light hits on the optical sparse material from the optical denser material, and one such a critical angle exists when light spreads from the optical sparse material to the optical denser material. Anomalous reflection and refraction, such as, negative reflection and negative refraction may occur when a light passes through the metasurface, and the conditions of their occurrence were given. Finally, a kind of metasurface based on one-dimensional phase mask was designed to control the light propagation.

Plasmonic dark field microscopy with a polymer substrate

In this letter, a plasmonic dark field microscopy taking advantages of the polymer loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide (PLSPPW) is experimentally demonstrated. The dye molecules (Rhodamine 6G, Rh6G) are doped in the PLSPPW to launch the plasmonic waves or guided waves. Due to the localized property of these waves, the near-field optical energy on the surface of PLSPPW can be scattered into the far-field only in the presence of the objects. The scattering signals then form the dark-field image of the objects. The proposed technique just utilizes a chip-scale integrated plasmonic multilayered structure which is highly compatible with the conventional optical microscopy. The polymer film involved in the PLSPPW also brings about the merits of small roughness, good stability and bio-compatibility
