Anomalous thermopower and Nernst effect in $\rm CeCoIn_5$: entropy-current loss in precursor state

The heavy-electron superconductor CeCoIn$_5$ exhibits a puzzling precursor state above its superconducting critical temperature at $T_c$ = 2.3 K. The thermopower and Nernst signal are anomalous. Below 15 K, the entropy current of the electrons undergoes a steep decrease reaching $\sim$0 at $T_c$. Concurrently, the off-diagonal thermoelectric current $α_{xy}$ is enhanced. The delicate sensitivity of the zero-entropy state to field implies phase coherence over large distances. The prominent anomalies in the thermoelectric current contrast with the relatively weak effects in the resistivity and magnetization.

Online Supplementary Material: Low temperature vortex liquid in $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$

We report here the supplementary material for Ref. [1]. Using torque magnetometry, we measured the magnetization anisotropy of 7 crystals of $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ (LSCO). In optimally-doped cuprates, the bulk susceptibility is dominated by the paramagnetic van-Vleck orbital term $χ_{orb}$ which has a significant anisotropy ($χ^{orb}_c>χ^{orb}_{ab}$) that changes weakly with $T$ (subscripts $c$ and ${ab}$ identify quantities measured with $\bf H||c$ and $\bf H\perp c$, respectively). Moreover, in the lightly-doped regime, the paramagnetic spin susceptibilities $χ^s_c$ and $χ^s_{ab}$ become significantly large below the interval 40-60 K. However, the spin susceptibility is very nearly isotropic (except below 10 K where its anisotropy becomes measurable). Against the large orbital and spin terms, the weak diamagnetic signal is very difficult to resolve using standard bulk magnetometry in lightly-doped cuprates. By contrast, torque magnetometry selectively detects the orbital diamagnetism generated by supercurrents confined to the CuO$_2$ layers while ignoring the large spin contribution when it is isotropic. The orbital van-Vleck contribution is also detected, but as a ``background'' that is $H$-linear to intense fields and only mildly $T$ dependent.

Our experiments \cite{Wang05,Li05,Wang06} persuade us that the Meissner transition at $T_c$ in hole-doped cuprates is driven by the loss of long-range phase coherence caused by singular phase fluctuations, a scenario at odds with the mean-field (MF), Gaussian Ginzburg Landau (GGL) approach advocated by Cabo, Mosquiera and Vidal \cite{Cabo}.

Low temperature vortex liquid in $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$

In the cuprates, the lightly-doped region is of major interest because superconductivity, antiferromagnetism, and the pseudogap state \cite{Timusk,Lee,Anderson} come together near a critical doping value $x_c$. These states are deeply influenced by phase fluctuations \cite{Emery} which lead to a vortex-liquid state that surrounds the superconducting region \cite{WangPRB01,WangPRB06}. However, many questions \cite{Doniach,Fisher,FisherLee,Tesanovic,Sachdev} related to the nature of the transition and vortex-liquid state at very low tempera- tures $T$ remain open because the diamagnetic signal is difficult to resolve in this region. Here, we report torque magnetometry results on $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ (LSCO) which show that superconductivity is lost at $x_c$ by quantum phase fluctuations. We find that, in a magnetic field $H$, the vortex solid-to-liquid transition occurs at field $H_m$ much lower than the depairing field $H_{c2}$. The vortex liquid exists in the large field interval $H_m \ll H_{c2}$, even in the limit $T\to$0. The resulting phase diagram reveals the large fraction of the $x$-$H$ plane occupied by the quantum vortex liquid.

Sharp switching of the magnetization in Fe1/4TaS2

Anisotropic magneto-transport measurements are reported on Fe1/4TaS2 single crystals grown by vapor transport. Both the magnetization and resistivity are extremely anisotropic, with the magnetic moments aligned parallel to the c crystallographic direction. Fe1/4TaS2 orders ferromagnetically below TC = 160 K and displays very sharp hysteresis loops in the ordered state for H||c. The corresponding magnetoresistance is negative, and it qualitatively reproduces the features observed in the M(H) data, by showing a sharp drop around the critical field Hs for the moment reversal. The magnetization switching time shows an unusual increase with increasing temperature. For field applied within the ab plane, the magnetization remains small and linear in field up to 5 T, and the magnetoresistance is positive and quadratic in field, with no visible hysteresis. The squareness of the H||c M(H) loops and the high critical field for the magnetization switch (Hs = 3.7 T at T = 2 K) allow us to classify Fe1/4TaS2 as a strong ferromagnet.

Magnetization, Nernst effect and vorticity in the cuprates

Nernst and magnetization experiments reveal the existence of a large region of the cuprate phase diagram above the $T_c$ curve in which vorticity and weak diamagnetism exist without phase coherence. We discuss the implication that the transition at $T_c$ is caused by the loss of long-range phase coherence caused by spontaneous vortex creation. Below $T_c$, these measurements provide an estimate of the depairing field $H_{c2}$ which is found to be very large (40-100 T depending on doping). We discuss the high-field Nernst and magnetization results, binding energy, and the phase diagram of hole-doped cuprates. Some new magnetization results on the vortex liquid in very underdoped LSCO in the limit $T\to 0$ are reported as well.

Anisotropic properties of the layered superconductor Cu0.07TiSe2

The anisotropic superconducting properties of single crystals of Cu0.07TiSe2 were studied by measurements of magnetization and electrical resistivity. TC is around 3.9 K, and the measured upper critical field (Hc2) values are ~1.25 T and 0.8 T, for applied field parallel and perpendicular to the TiSe2 planes, respectively. The anisotropy ratio gamma_anis = H^ab_c2 / H^c_c2 is close to 1.6 and nearly temperature independent. The lower critical field (Hc1) values are much smaller (~ 32 Oe for H||ab and 17 Oe for H||c); demagnetizing corrections for field perpendicular to the thin plate crystals are required for the determination of H^c_c1. The anisotropy of the critical fields is described well by the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory, and the characteristic GL parameters are determined and discussed.

Depairing field, onset temperature and the nature of the transition in cuprates

The depairing (upper critical) field $H_{c2}$ in hole-doped cuprates has been inferred from magnetization curves $M$-$H$ measured by torque magnetometry in fields $H$ up to 45 T. We discuss the implications of the results for the pair binding energy, the Nernst onset temperature, fluctuations and the nature of the Meissner transition at $T_c$.

Large enhancement of the thermopower in Na$_x$CoO$_2$ at high Na doping

Research on the oxide perovskites has uncovered electronic properties that are strikingly enhanced compared with those in conventional metals. Examples are the high critical temperatures of the cuprate superconductors and the colossal magnetoresistance in the manganites. The conducting layered cobaltate $\rm Na_xCoO_2$ displays several interesting electronic phases as $x$ is varied including water-induced superconductivity and an insulating state that is destroyed by field. Initial measurements showed that, in the as-grown composition, $\rm Na_xCoO_2$ displays moderately large thermopower $S$ and conductivity $σ$. However, the prospects for thermoelectric cooling applications faded when the figure of merit $Z$ was found to be small at this composition (0.6$ $0.75, $S$ undergoes an even steeper enhancement. At the critical doping $x_p\sim$ 0.85, $Z$ (at 80 K) reaches values $\sim$40 times larger than in the as-grown crystals. We discuss prospects for low-temperature thermoelectric applications.

Exact soliton solutions and nonlinear modulation instability in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

We find one-, two-, and three-component solitons of the polar and ferromagnetic (FM) types in the general (non-integrable) model of a spinor (three-component) model of the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), based on a system of three nonlinearly coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The stability of the solitons is studied by means of direct simulations, and, in a part, analytically, using linearized equations for small perturbations. Global stability of the solitons is considered by means of the energy comparison. As a result, ground-state and metastable soliton states of the FM and polar types are identified. For the special integrable version of the model, we develop the Darboux transformation (DT). As an application of the DT, analytical solutions are obtained that display full nonlinear evolution of the modulational instability (MI) of a continuous-wave (CW) state seeded by a small spatially periodic perturbation. Additionally, by dint of direct simulations, we demonstrate that solitons of both the polar and FM types, found in the integrable system, are structurally stable, i.e., they are robust under random changes of the relevant nonlinear coefficient in time.

Field-enhanced diamagnetism in intense magnetic field in the pseudogap state of the cuprate $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}

In hole-doped cuprates, Nernst experiments imply that the superconducting state is destroyed by spontaneous creation of vortices which destroy phase coherence. Using torque magnetometry on $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$, we uncover a field-enhanced diamagnetic signal $M$ above the transition temperature $T_c$ that increases with applied field to 32 Tesla and scales just like the Nernst signal. The magnetization results above $T_c$ distinguish $M$ from conventional amplitude fluctuations, and strongly support the vortex scenario for the loss of phase coherence at $T_c$.

The Nernst effect in high-$T_c$ superconductors

The observation of a large Nernst signal $e_N$ in an extended region above the critical temperature $T_c$ in hole-doped cuprates provides evidence that vortex excitations survive above $T_c$. The results support the scenario that superfluidity vanishes because long-range phase coherence is destroyed by thermally-created vortices (in zero field), and that the pair condensate extends high into the pseudogap state in the underdoped (UD) regime. We present a series of measurements to high fields $H$ which provide strong evidence for this phase-disordering scenario.

Strongly nonlinear magnetization above $T_c$ in $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$

Using high-resolution magnetometry we have investigated in detail the magnetization $M$ above the critical temperature $T_c$ in $\rm Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+δ}$. In a broad range of temperature $T$ above $T_c$, we find that $M(T,H)$ is strongly non-linear in the field $H$. We show that as $T\to T_c$, the susceptibility $χ(T,H)$ diverges to very large values ($χ\to$ -1) if measured in weak $H$. In addition, $M(H)$ displays an anomalous non-analytic form $M\sim H^{1/δ}$ in weak fields with a strongly $T$-dependent exponent $δ(T)$. These features strongly support the proposal that, above $T_c$, the pair condensate survives to support significant London rigidity.

Exact soliton solution of Spin Chain with a external magnetic field in linear wave background

Employing a simple, straightforward Darboux transformation we construct exact N-soliton solution for anisotropic spin chain driven by a external magnetic field in linear wave background. As a special case the explicit one- and two-soliton solution dressed by the linear wave corresponding to magnon in quantum theory is obtained analytically and its property is discussed in detail. The dispersion law, effective soliton mass, and the energy of each soliton are investigated as well. Our result show that the stability criterion of soliton is related with anisotropic parameter and the amplitude of the linear wave.

Exact soliton solution and inelastic two-soliton collision in spin chain driven by a time-dependent magnetic field

We investigate dynamics of exact N-soliton trains in spin chain driven by a time-dependent magnetic field by means of an inverse scattering transformation. The one-soliton solution indicates obviously the spin precession around the magnetic field and periodic shape-variation induced by the time varying field as well. In terms of the general soliton solutions N-soliton interaction and particularly various two-soliton collisions are analyzed. The inelastic collision by which we mean the soliton shape change before and after collision appears generally due to the time varying field. We, moreover, show that complete inelastic collisions can be achieved by adjusting spectrum and field parameters. This may lead a potential technique of shape control of soliton.

Soliton solution of continuum magnetization-equation in conducting ferromagnet with a spin-polarized current

Exact soliton solutions of a modified Landau-Lifshitz equation for the magnetization of conducting ferromagnet in the presence of a spin-polarized current are obtained by means of inverse scattering transformation. From the analytical solution effects of spin-current on the frequency, wave number, and dispersion law of spin wave are investigated. The one-soliton solution indicates obviously current-driven precession and periodic shape-variation as well. The inelastic collision of solitons by which we mean the shape change before and after collision appears due to the spin current. We, moreover, show that complete inelastic collisions can be achieved by adjusting spectrum and current parameters. This may lead to a potential technique for shape control of spin wave.

Superconductivity in three-layer Na0.3CoO2*1.3H2O

The observation of superconductivity at 4.3 K in a new crystalline form of Na0.3CoO2*1.3H2O is reported. The new superconductor has three layers of CoO6 octahedra per crystallographic unit cell, in contrast to the previously reported two-layer superconductor. The three-layer cell occurs because the relative orientations of neighboring CoO2 layers are distinctly different from what is seen in the two-layer superconducting phase. This type of structural difference in materials that are otherwise chemically and structurally identical is not possible to attain on the layered copper oxide superconductors. The synthesis and stability of the new phase are described.

Exact calculation of the skyrmion lifetime in a ferromagnetic Bose condensate

The tunneling rate of a skyrmion in ferromagnetic spin-1/2 Bose condensates through an off-centered potential barrier is calculated exactly with the periodic instanton method. The prefactor is shown to depend on the chemical potential of the core atoms, at which level the atom tunnels. Our results can be readily extended to estimate the lifetime of other topological excitations in the condensate, such as vortices and monopoles.
