100 years of the first experimental test of General Relativity

Einsteins general theory of relativity is one of the most important accomplishments in the history of science. Its experimental verification a century ago is therefore an essential milestone that is worth celebrating in full. We reassess the importance of one of the two expeditions that made these measurements possible, a story that involves a sense of adventure and scientific ingenuity in equal measure.

On-axis scattering of scalar fields by charged rotating black holes

We investigate the scattering of a massless scalar field by a Kerr-Newman black hole, considering the case of on-axis incidence. We use the partial wave method to find numerical results for the scattering cross section, which we compare with classical and semiclassical analytical results, obtaining excellent agreement. We present a selection of plots for different values of the black hole parameters.

Black holes with surrounding matter and rainbow scattering

The scattering of light by water droplets can produce one of the most beautiful phenomena in Nature: the rainbow. This optical phenomenon has analogues in molecular, atomic and nuclear physics. Recently, rainbow scattering has been shown to arise from the gravitational interaction of a scalar field with a compact horizonless object. We show that rainbow scattering can also occur in the background of a black hole with surrounding matter. We study the scattering of null geodesics and planar massless scalar waves by Schwarzschild black holes surrounded by a thin spherical shell of matter. We explore various configurations of this system, analyzing changes in mass fraction and radius of the shell. We show that the deflection function can present stationary points, what leads to rainbow scattering. We analyze the large-angle scattered amplitude as a function of the shell's parameters, showing that it presents a non-monotonic behavior.

Massive and charged scalar field in Kerr-Newman spacetime: Absorption and superradiance

We consider the propagation of a generic scalar field around a rotating and charged black hole. Using the partial wave method, we find, numerically, the total and partial absorption cross sections for different incidence angles. We investigate the low- and high-frequency limits, finding semi-analytical approximations for the absorption cross section, which we compare with our numerical results. Finally, we consider the superradiant regime, showing that, for charged fields, planar waves can be superradiantly scattered.

Spectral lines of extreme compact objects

We study the absorption of scalar fields by extreme/exotic compact objects (ECOs) -- horizonless alternatives to black holes -- via a simple model in which dissipative mechanisms are encapsulated in a single parameter. Trapped modes, localized between the ECO core and the potential barrier at the photosphere, generate Breit-Wigner-type spectral lines in the absorption cross section. Absorption is enhanced whenever the wave frequency resonates with a trapped mode, leading to a spectral profile which differs qualitatively from that of a black hole. We introduce a model based on Nariai spacetime, in which properties of the spectral lines are calculated in closed form. We present numerically calculated absorption cross sections and transmission factors for example scenarios, and show how the Nariai model captures the essential features. We argue that, in principle, ECOs can be distinguished from black holes through their absorption spectra.

Synchronized stationary clouds in a static fluid

The existence of stationary bound states for the hydrodynamic velocity field between two concentric cylinders is established. We argue that rotational motion, together with a trapping mechanism for the associated field, is sufficient to mitigate energy dissipation between the cylinders, thus allowing the existence of infinitely long lived modes, which we dub stationary clouds. We demonstrate the existence of such stationary clouds for sound and surface waves when the fluid is static and the internal cylinder rotates with constant angular velocity $Ω$. These setups provide a unique opportunity for the first experimental observation of synchronized stationary clouds. As in the case of bosonic fields around rotating black holes and black hole analogues, the existence of these clouds relies on a synchronization condition between $Ω$ and the angular phase velocity of the cloud.

Ergoregion instability of a rotating quantum system

Using the analogy between acoustic perturbations in an ideal fluid and the description of a Klein-Gordon scalar field in a curved spacetime, we study the quasinormal modes of a quantum system: the rotating Bose-Einstein condensate. To compute quasinormal frequencies, we use two different numerical techniques, namely the direct integration and the continued-fraction methods. We study in detail the ergoregion instability of this linearly perturbed system, comparing the results with different setup configurations.

Absorption of electromagnetic plane waves by rotating black holes

We study the absorption of monochromatic electromagnetic plane waves impinging upon a Kerr black hole, in the general case that the direction of incidence is not aligned with the black hole spin axis. We present numerical results that are in accord with low- and high-frequency approximations. We find that circularly-polarized waves are distinguished by the black hole spin, with counter-rotating polarizations being more absorbed than co-rotating polarizations. At low frequencies and moderate incidence angles, there exists a narrow parameter window in which superradiant emission in the dipole mode can exceed absorption in the non-superradiant modes, allowing a planar electromagnetic wave to stimulate net emission from a black hole.

The Gibbons-Hawking radiation of gravitons in the Poincaré and static patches of de Sitter spacetime

We discuss the quantization of linearized gravity in the background de Sitter spacetime using a gauge-invariant formalism to write the perturbed gravitational field in the static patch. This field is quantized after fixing the gauge completely. The response rate of this field to monochromatic multipole sources is then computed in the thermal equilibrium state with the well known Gibbons-Hawking temperature. We compare this response rate with the one obtained in the Bunch-Davies-like vacuum state defined in the Poincaré patch. These response rates are found to be the same as expected. This agreement serves as a verification of the infrared finite graviton two-point function in the static patch of de Sitter spacetime found previously.

Scalar absorption by charged rotating black holes

We compute numerically the absorption cross section of planar massless scalar waves impinging upon a Kerr-Newman black hole with different incidence angles. We investigate the influence of the black hole electric charge and angular momentum in the absorption spectrum, comparing our numerical computations with analytical results for the limits of high and low frequency.

Gravitational waves emitted by a particle rotating around a Schwarzschild black hole: A semiclassical approach

We analyze the gravitational radiation emitted from a particle in circular motion around a Schwarzschild black hole using the framework of quantum field theory in curved spacetime at tree level. The gravitational perturbations are written in a gauge-invariant formalism for spherically symmetric spacetimes. We discuss the results, comparing them to the radiation emitted by a particle when it is assumed to be orbiting a massive object due to a Newtonian force in flat spacetime.

Quasinormal modes of the polytropic hydrodynamic vortex

Analogue systems are a powerful instrument to investigate and understand in a controlled setting many general-relativistic effects. Here, we focus on superradiant-triggered instabilities and quasi-normal modes. We consider a compressible hydrodynamic vortex characterized by a polytropic equation of state, the {\it polytropic hydrodynamic vortex}, a purely circulating system with an ergoregion but no event horizon. We compute the quasinormal modes of this system numerically with different methods, finding excellent agreement between them. When the fluid velocity is larger than the speed of sound, an ergoregion appears in the effective spacetime, triggering an "ergoregion instability." We study the details of the instability for the polytropic vortex, and in particular find analytic expressions for the marginally-stable configuration.

Absorption by dirty black holes: null geodesics and scalar waves

Black holes are a paradigm in nowadays physics, and are expected to be hosted at the center of galaxies. Supermassive galactic black holes are not isolated, and their surroundings play crucial roles in many observational features. The absorption and scattering of fields by isolated black holes have been vastly studied, allowing the understanding of many phenomenological features. However, as far as we are aware, a study of the influence of the presence of matter surrounding black holes in its planar wave scattering and absorption spectrum is still lacking in the literature. This may be important in the analysis of, for instance, the accretion of dark matter by black holes. We consider planar massless scalar waves incident upon a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a thin spherical shell. We use the partial wave method to determine the absorption cross section, and present a selection of numerical results. In the low-frequency regime, we show that the absorption cross section is equal to the horizon area. At the high-frequency regime, we show that the absorption cross section approaches the geodesic capture cross section.

Quasinormal modes of relativistic stars and interacting fields

The quasinormal modes of relativistic compact objects encode important information about the gravitational response associated with astrophysical phenomena. Detecting such oscillations would provide us with a unique understanding of the properties of compact stars, and may give definitive evidence for the existence of black holes. However, computing quasinormal modes in realistic astrophysical environments is challenging due to the complexity of the spacetime background and of the dynamics of the perturbations. We discuss two complementary methods for computing the quasinormal modes of spherically symmetric astrophysical systems, namely, the direct integration method and the continued-fraction method. We extend these techniques to dealing with generic coupled systems of linear equations, with the only assumption being the interaction between different fields is effectively localized within a finite region. In particular, we adapt the continued-fraction method to include cases where a series solution can be obtained only outside an effective region. As an application, we compute the polar quasinormal modes of boson stars by using the continued-fraction method for the first time. The methods discussed here can be applied to other situations in which the perturbations effectively couple only within a finite region of space.

Tidal Forces in Reissner-Nordström Spacetimes

We analyze the tidal forces produced in the spacetime of Reissner-Nordström black holes. We point out that the radial component of the tidal force changes sign just outside the event horizon if the charge-to-mass ratio is close to $1$ unlike in Schwarzschild spacetime of uncharged black holes, and that the angular component changes sign between the outer and inner horizons. We solve the geodesic deviation equations for radially falling bodies towards the charged black hole. We find, for example, that the radial component of the geodesic deviation vector starts decreasing inside the event horizon unlike in the Schwarzschild case.

Superradiance in static black hole spacetimes

We investigate the absorption of a massive and charged scalar field in a Reissner-Nordström background. We compare our numerical results for the absorption cross section, obtained for arbitrary frequencies, with the low- and high-frequency limits. We find, in particular, that the total absorption cross section can be negative, showing that planar scalar waves can be superradiantly amplified by black holes.

Scattering from charged black holes and supergravity

The scattering cross sections of the unpolarized electromagnetic and gravitational waves are shown to be equal for the extreme Reissner-Nordström black hole using $N=2$ supergravity. The conversion cross sections between the unpolarized electromagnetic and gravitational waves are also shown to coincide. The gravitational and electromagnetic scattering cross sections are computed numerically for Reissner-Nordström black holes for several charge-to-mass ratios and the coincidence between the two scattering cross sections for the extremal case is confirmed.
