Efficient high performance computing with the ALICE Event Processing Nodes GPU-based farm

Due to the increase of data volumes expected for the LHC Run 3 and Run 4, the ALICE Collaboration designed and deployed a new, energy efficient, computing model to run Online and Offline O$^2$ data processing within a single software framework. The ALICE O$^2$ Event Processing Nodes (EPN) project performs online data reconstruction using GPUs (Graphic Processing Units) instead of CPUs and applies an efficient, entropy-based, online data compression to cope with PbPb collision data at a 50 kHz hadronic interaction rate. Also, the O$^2$ EPN farm infrastructure features an energy efficient, environmentally friendly, adiabatic cooling system which allows for operational and capital cost savings.

Hierarchical Bitmap Indexing for Range and Membership Queries on Multidimensional Arrays

Traditional indexing techniques commonly employed in da\-ta\-ba\-se systems perform poorly on multidimensional array scientific data. Bitmap indices are widely used in commercial databases for processing complex queries, due to their effective use of bit-wise operations and space-efficiency. However, bitmap indices apply natively to relational or linearized datasets, which is especially notable in binned or compressed indices. We propose a new method for multidimensional array indexing that overcomes the dimensionality-induced inefficiencies. The hierarchical indexing method is based on $n$-di\-men\-sional sparse trees for dimension partitioning, with bound number of individual, adaptively binned indices for attribute partitioning. This indexing performs well on range involving both dimensions and attributes, as it prunes the search space early, avoids reading entire index data, and does at most a single index traversal. Moreover, the indexing is easily extensible to membership queries. The indexing method was implemented on top of a state of the art bitmap indexing library Fastbit. We show that the hierarchical bitmap index outperforms conventional bitmap indexing built on auxiliary attribute for each dimension. Furthermore, the adaptive binning significantly reduces the amount of bins and therefore memory requirements.

A Generic Inverted Index Framework for Similarity Search on the GPU - Technical Report

We propose a novel generic inverted index framework on the GPU (called GENIE), aiming to reduce the programming complexity of the GPU for parallel similarity search of different data types. Not every data type and similarity measure are supported by GENIE, but many popular ones are. We present the system design of GENIE, and demonstrate similarity search with GENIE on several data types along with a theoretical analysis of search results. A new concept of locality sensitive hashing (LSH) named $τ$-ANN search, and a novel data structure c-PQ on the GPU are also proposed for achieving this purpose. Extensive experiments on different real-life datasets demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our framework. The implemented system has been released as open source.
