Dipolar Dark Matter and Dark Energy

In previous work [L. Blanchet and A. Le Tiec, Phys. Rev. D 78, 024031 (2008)], a model of dark matter and dark energy based on the concept of gravitational polarization was investigated. This model was shown to recover the concordance cosmological scenario (Lambda-CDM) at cosmological scales, and the phenomenology of the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) at galactic scales. In this article we prove that the model can be formulated with a simple and physically meaningful matter action in general relativity. We also provide alternative derivations of the main results of the model, and some details on the variation of the action.

Modified gravity or modified matter ?

To the astrophysicist faced with the puzzle of dark matter, this one appears under two different aspects: on the one hand in cosmology, i.e. at very large scales, where it seems to be made of a bath of particles; on the other hand at the scale of galaxies, where it is described by a set of specific phenomena, looking incompatible with a description in terms of particles, and suggesting that we are seeing a modification of the law of gravity. Reconciling these two distinct aspects of dark matter in a single theoretical formalism is an important challenge which could lead to some new physics in action at astronomical scales.

Phenomenology of the Modified Newtonian Dynamics and the Concordance Cosmological Scenario

After reviewing the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) proposal, we advocate that the associated phenomenology may actually not result from a modification of Newtonian gravity, but from a mechanism of "gravitational polarization" of some dipolar medium playing the role of dark matter. We then build a relativistic model within standard general relativity to describe (at some phenomenological level) the dipolar dark matter polarizable in a gravitational field. The model naturally involves a cosmological constant, and is shown to reduce to the concordance cosmological scenario (Lambda-CDM) at early cosmological times. From the mechanism of gravitational polarization, we recover the phenomenology of MOND in a typical galaxy at low redshift. Furthermore, we show that the cosmological constant Lambda scales like a0^2, where a0 is the constant MOND acceleration scale, in good agreement with observations.

Model of Dark Matter and Dark Energy Based on Gravitational Polarization

A model of dark matter and dark energy based on the concept of gravitational polarization is investigated. We propose an action in standard general relativity for describing, at some effective or phenomenological level, the dynamics of a dipolar medium, i.e. one endowed with a dipole moment vector, and polarizable in a gravitational field. Using first-order cosmological perturbations, we show that the dipolar fluid is undistinguishable from standard dark energy (a cosmological constant Lambda) plus standard dark matter (a pressureless perfect fluid), and therefore benefits from the successes of the Lambda-CDM (Lambda-cold dark matter) scenario at cosmological scales. Invoking an argument of "weak clusterisation" of the mass distribution of dipole moments, we find that the dipolar dark matter reproduces the phenomenology of the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) at galactic scales. The dipolar medium action naturally contains a cosmological constant, and we show that if the model is to come from some fundamental underlying physics, the cosmological constant Lambda should be of the order of a0^2/c^4, where a0 denotes the MOND constant acceleration scale, in good agreement with observations.

Tail effects in the third post-Newtonian gravitational wave energy flux of compact binaries in quasi-elliptical orbits

The far-zone flux of energy contains hereditary (tail) contributions that depend on the entire past history of the source. Using the multipolar post-Minkowskian wave generation formalism, we propose and implement a semi-analytical method in the frequency domain to compute these contributions from the inspiral phase of a binary system of compact objects moving in quasi-elliptical orbits up to 3PN order. The method explicitly uses the quasi-Keplerian representation of elliptical orbits at 1PN order and exploits the doubly periodic nature of the motion to average the 3PN fluxes over the binary's orbit. Together with the instantaneous (non-tail) contributions evaluated in a companion paper, it provides crucial inputs for the construction of ready-to-use templates for compact binaries moving on quasi-elliptic orbits, an interesting class of sources for the ground based gravitational wave detectors such as LIGO and Virgo as well as space based detectors like LISA.

Inspiralling compact binaries in quasi-elliptical orbits: The complete third post-Newtonian energy flux

The instantaneous contributions to the 3PN gravitational wave luminosity from the inspiral phase of a binary system of compact objects moving in a quasi elliptical orbit is computed using the multipolar post-Minkowskian wave generation formalism. The necessary inputs for this calculation include the 3PN accurate mass quadrupole moment for general orbits and the mass octupole and current quadrupole moments at 2PN. Using the recently obtained 3PN quasi-Keplerian representation of elliptical orbits the flux is averaged over the binary's orbit. Supplementing this by the important hereditary contributions arising from tails, tails-of-tails and tails squared terms calculated in a previous paper, the complete 3PN energy flux is obtained. The final result presented in this paper would be needed for the construction of ready-to-use templates for binaries moving on non-circular orbits, a plausible class of sources not only for the space based detectors like LISA but also for the ground based ones.

Gravitational polarization and the phenomenology of MOND

The modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) has been proposed as an alternative to the dark matter paradigm; the philosophy behind is that there is no dark matter and we witness a violation of the Newtonian law of dynamics. In this article, we interpret differently the phenomenology sustaining MOND, as resulting from an effect of "gravitational polarization", of some cosmic fluid made of dipole moments, aligned in the gravitational field, and representing a new form of dark matter. We invoke an internal force, of non-gravitational origin, in order to hold together the microscopic constituents of the dipole. The dipolar particles are weakly influenced by the distribution of ordinary matter; they are accelerated not by the gravitational field, but by its gradient, or tidal gravitational field.

Dipolar Particles in General Relativity

The dynamics of "dipolar particles", i.e. particles endowed with a four-vector mass dipole moment, is investigated using an action principle in general relativity. The action is a specific functional of the particle's world line, and of the dipole moment vector, considered as a dynamical variable. The first part of the action is inspired by that of a particle with spin moving on an arbitrary gravitational background. The second part is intended to describe, at some effective level, the internal non-gravitational force linking together the "microscopic" constituents of the dipole. We find that some solutions of the equations of motion and evolution of the dipolar particles correspond to an equilibrium state for the dipole moment in a gravitational field. Under some hypothesis we show that a fluid of dipolar particles, supposed to constitute the dark matter, reproduces the modified Newtonian dynamics (MOND) in the non relativistic limit. We recover the main characteristics of a recently proposed quasi-Newtonian model of "gravitational polarization".

Radiation reaction in the 2.5PN waveform from inspiralling binaries in circular orbits

In this Comment we compute the contributions of the radiation reaction force in the 2.5 post-Newtonian (PN) gravitational wave polarizations for compact binaries in circular orbits. (i) We point out and correct an inconsistency in the derivation of Arun, Blanchet, Iyer, and Qusailah. (ii) We prove that all contributions from radiation reaction in the 2.5PN waveform are actually negligible since they can be absorbed into a modification of the orbital phase at the 5PN order.

Post-Newtonian Approximations, Compact Binaries, and Strong-Field Tests of Gravity

This is an extended summary of the two parallel sessions held at MG11: PPN1 ``Strong Gravity and Binaries'' (chaired by L.B. and L.G.) and PPN2 ``Post-Newtonian Dynamics in Binary Objects'' (chaired by G.S.). The aims and contents of these sessions were close to each other and overlapping. It is natural to review both sessions in one joint contribution to the MG11 Proceedings. The summary places the delivered talks in a broader perspective of current studies in this area. One can find more details in individual contributions of the respective authors.

Higher-order spin effects in the dynamics of compact binaries I. Equations of motion

We derive the equations of motion of spinning compact binaries including the spin-orbit (SO) coupling terms one post-Newtonian (PN) order beyond the leading-order effect. For black holes maximally spinning this corresponds to 2.5PN order. Our result for the equations of motion essentially confirms the previous result by Tagoshi, Ohashi and Owen. We also compute the spin-orbit effects up to 2.5PN order in the conserved (Noetherian) integrals of motion, namely the energy, the total angular momentum, the linear momentum and the center-of-mass integral. We obtain the spin precession equations at 1PN order beyond the leading term, as well. Those results will be used in a future paper to derive the time evolution of the binary orbital phase, providing more accurate templates for LIGO-Virgo-LISA type interferometric detectors.

General Relativistic Dynamics of Compact Binary Systems

The equations of motion of compact binary systems have been derived in the post-Newtonian (PN) approximation of general relativity. The current level of accuracy is 3.5PN order. The conservative part of the equations of motion (neglecting the radiation reaction damping terms) is deducible from a generalized Lagrangian in harmonic coordinates, or equivalently from an ordinary Hamiltonian in ADM coordinates. As an application we investigate the problem of the dynamical stability of circular binary orbits against gravitational perturbations up to the 3PN order. We find that there is no innermost stable circular orbit or ISCO at the 3PN order for equal masses.

Post-Newtonian Theory and Dimensional Regularization

Inspiralling compact binaries are ideally suited for application of a high-order post-Newtonian (PN) gravitational wave generation formalism. To be observed by the LIGO and VIRGO detectors, these very relativistic systems (with orbital velocities of the order of 0.5c in the last rotations) require high-accuracy templates predicted by general relativity theory. Recent calculations of the motion and gravitational radiation of compact binaries at the 3PN approximation using the Hadamard self-field regularization have left undetermined a few dimensionless coefficients called ambiguity parameters. In this article we review the application of dimensional self-field regularization, within Einstein's classical general relativity formulated in D space-time dimensions, which finally succeeded in clearing up the problem, by uniquely fixing the values of all the ambiguity parameters.

Gravitational Radiation from Post-Newtonian Sources and Inspiralling Compact Binaries

The article reviews the current status of a theoretical approach to the problem of the emission of gravitational waves by isolated systems in the context of general relativity. Part A of the article deals with general post-Newtonian sources. The exterior field of the source is investigated by means of a combination of analytic post-Minkowskian and multipolar approximations. The physical observables in the far-zone of the source are described by a specific set of radiative multipole moments. By matching the exterior solution to the metric of the post-Newtonian source in the near-zone we obtain the explicit expressions of the source multipole moments. The relationships between the radiative and source moments involve many non-linear multipole interactions, among them those associated with the tails (and tails-of-tails) of gravitational waves. Part B of the article is devoted to the application to compact binary systems. We present the equations of binary motion, and the associated Lagrangian and Hamiltonian, at the third post-Newtonian (3PN) order beyond the Newtonian acceleration. The gravitational-wave energy flux, taking consistently into account the relativistic corrections in the binary moments as well as the various tail effects, is derived through 3.5PN order with respect to the quadrupole formalism. The binary's orbital phase, whose prior knowledge is crucial for searching and analyzing the signals from inspiralling compact binaries, is deduced from an energy balance argument.

Gravitational Radiation from Two-Body Systems

Thanks to the new generation of gravitational wave detectors LIGO and VIRGO, the theory of general relativity will face new and important confrontations to observational data with unprecedented precision. Indeed the detection and analysis of the gravitational waves from compact binary star systems requires beforehand a very precise solution of the two-body problem within general relativity. The approximation currently used to solve this problem is the post-Newtonian one, and must be pushed to high order in order to describe with sufficient accuracy (given the sensitivity of the detectors) the inspiral phase of compact bodies, which immediately precedes their final merger. The resulting post-Newtonian ``templates'' are currently known to 3.5PN order, and are used for searching and deciphering the gravitational wave signals in VIRGO and LIGO.

Gravitational Recoil of Inspiralling Black-Hole Binaries to Second Post-Newtonian Order

The loss of linear momentum by gravitational radiation and the resulting gravitational recoil of black-hole binary systems may play an important role in the growth of massive black holes in early galaxies. We calculate the gravitational recoil of non-spinning black-hole binaries at the second post-Newtonian order (2PN) beyond the dominant effect, obtaining, for the first time, the 1.5PN correction term due to tails of waves and the next 2PN term. We find that the maximum value of the net recoil experienced by the binary due to the inspiral phase up to the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) is of the order of 22 km/s. We then estimate the kick velocity accumulated during the plunge from the ISCO up to the horizon by integrating the momentum flux using the 2PN formula along a plunge geodesic of the Schwarzschild metric. We find that the contribution of the plunge dominates over that of the inspiral. For a mass ratio m_2/m_1=1/8, we estimate a total recoil velocity (due to both adiabatic and plunge phases) of 100 +/- 20 km/s. For a ratio 0.38, the recoil is maximum and we estimate it to be 250 +/- 50 km/s. In the limit of small mass ratio, we estimate V/c to be approximately 0.043 (1 +/- 20%)(m_2/m_1)^2. Our estimates are consistent with, but span a substantially narrower range than, those of Favata et al. (2004).

General relativity and the spiral of compact binary stars

The theory of general relativity, which is extremely well verified by classic tests in the solar system as well as by the radiation of the binary pulsar, is one of the fundamental tools of nowadays astrophysics. It permits the computation of the gravitational wave form emitted during the inspiral phase of binary systems of neutron stars and black holes. Based on the so-called post-Newtonian approximation (developped to high order), the prediction of general relativity is used as a "template" for searching and analysing the signals in the network of gravitational-wave detectors VIRGO/LIGO.

On the structure of the post-Newtonian expansion in general relativity

In the continuation of a preceding work, we derive a new expression for the metric in the near zone of an isolated matter system in post-Newtonian approximations of general relativity. The post-Newtonian metric, a solution of the field equations in harmonic coordinates, is formally valid up to any order, and is cast in the form of a particular solution of the wave equation, plus a specific homogeneous solution which ensures the asymptotic matching to the multipolar expansion of the gravitational field in the exterior of the system. The new form provides some insights on the structure of the post-Newtonian expansion in general relativity and the gravitational radiation reaction terms therein.
