New realizations of algebras of the Askey-Wilson type in terms of Lie and quantum algebras

The Askey-Wilson algebra is realized in terms of the elements of the quantum algebras $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(2))$ or $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$. A new realization of the Racah algebra in terms of the Lie algebras $\mathfrak{su}(2)$ or $\mathfrak{su}(1,1)$ is given also. Details for different specializations are provided. The advantage of these new realizations is that one generator of the Askey-Wilson (or Racah) algebra becomes diagonal in the usual representation of the quantum algebras whereas the second one is tridiagonal. This allows to recover easily the recurrence relations of the associated orthogonal polynomials of the Askey scheme. These realizations involve rational functions of the Cartan generator of the quantum algebras, they are linear with respect to the other generators and depend on the Casimir element of the quantum algebras.

Degenerate Sklyanin algebras, Askey-Wilson polynomials and Heun operators

The $q$-difference equation, the shift and the contiguity relations of the Askey-Wilson polynomials are cast in the framework of the three and four-dimensional degenerate Sklyanin algebras $\mathfrak{ska}_3$ and $\mathfrak{ska}_4$. It is shown that the $q$-para Racah polynomials corresponding to a non-conventional truncation of the Askey-Wilson polynomials form a basis for a finite-dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{ska}_4$. The first order Heun operators defined by a degree raising condition on polynomials are shown to form a five-dimensional vector space that encompasses $\mathfrak{ska}_4$. The most general quadratic expression in the five basis operators and such that it raises degrees by no more than one is identified with the Heun-Askey-Wilson operator.

The Heun-Racah and Heun-Bannai-Ito algebras

This paper introduces and studies the Heun-Racah and Heun-Bannai-Ito algebras abstractly and establishes the relation between these new algebraic structures and generalized Heun-type operators derived from the notion of algebraic Heun operators in the case of the Racah and Bannai-Ito algebras.

The rational Heun operator and Wilson biorthogonal functions

We consider the rational Heun operator defined as the most general second-order $q$-difference operator which sends any rational function of type $[(n-1)/n]$ to a rational function of type $[n/(n+1)]$. We shall take the poles to be located on the Askey-Wilson grid. It is shown that this operator is related to the one-dimensional degeneration of the Ruijsenaars-van Diejen Hamiltonians. The Wilson biorthogonal functions of type ${_{10}}Φ_9$ are found to be solutions of a generalized eigenvalue problem involving rational Heun operators of the special "classical" kind.

The Racah algebra and $\mathfrak{sl}_n$

We conjecture the existence of an embedding of the Racah algebra into the universal enveloping algebra of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. Evidence of this conjecture is offered by realizing both algebras using differential operators and giving an embedding in this realization.

Howe duality and algebras of the Askey-Wilson type: an overview

The Askey-Wilson algebra and its relatives such as the Racah and Bannai-Ito algebras were initially introduced in connection with the eponym orthogonal polynomials. They have since proved ubiquitous. In particular they admit presentations as commutants that are related through Howe duality. This paper surveys these results.

The Higgs and Hahn algebras from a Howe duality perspective

The Hahn algebra encodes the bispectral properties of the eponymous orthogonal polynomials. In the discrete case, it is isomorphic to the polynomial algebra identified by Higgs as the symmetry algebra of the harmonic oscillator on the $2$-sphere. These two algebras are recognized as the commutant of a $\mathfrak{o}(2)\oplus\mathfrak{o}(2)$ subalgebra of $\mathfrak{o}(4)$ in the oscillator representation of the universal algebra $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{u}(4))$. This connection is further related to the embedding of the (discrete) Hahn algebra in $\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))\otimes\mathcal{U}(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ in light of the dual action of the pair $\big(\mathfrak{o}(4),\mathfrak{su}(1,1)\big)$ on the state vectors of four harmonic oscillators. The two-dimensional singular oscillator is naturally seen by dimensional reduction to have the Higgs algebra as its symmetry algebra.

Dunkl-Supersymmetric Orthogonal functions associated with classical orthogonal polynomials

We consider the eigenvalue problem associated with the Dunkl-type differential operator (in which the reflection operator R is involved) L = dx R + v(x), (v(-x) = -v(x)), in the context of supersymmetric quantum mechanical models. By solving this eigenvalue problem with the help of known exactly solvable potentials, we construct several classes of functions satisfying certain orthogonality relations. We call them the Dunkl-supersymmetric (Dunkl-SUSY) orthogonal functions. These functions can be expressed in terms of the classical orthogonal polynomials (COPs). The key feature of these functions is that they appear by pairs, i.e., Qn(x) and Qn(-x) are both the eigenfunctions of L. A general formulation of the Dunkl-SUSY orthogonal polynomials is also presented.

Racah problems for the oscillator algebra, the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_n$, and multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials

The oscillator Racah algebra $\mathcal{R}_n(\mathfrak{h})$ is realized by the intermediate Casimir operators arising in the multifold tensor product of the oscillator algebra $\mathfrak{h}$. An embedding of the Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}_{n-1}$ into $\mathcal{R}_n(\mathfrak{h})$ is presented. It relates the representation theory of the two algebras. We establish the connection between recoupling coefficients for $\mathfrak{h}$ and matrix elements of $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-representations which are both expressed in terms of multivariate Krawtchouk polynomials of Griffiths type.

Revisiting the Askey--Wilson algebra with the universal R-matrix of $U_q(sl(2))$

A description of the embedding of the universal Askey--Wilson algebra, AW(3), in $U_q(sl_2)^{\otimes 3}$ is given in terms of the universal R-matrix of $U_q(sl_2)$. The generators of the centralizer of $U_q(sl_2)$ in its three-fold product are naturally expressed through conjugations of Casimir elements with R. They are identified as the images of the generators of AW(3) under the embedding map by showing that they obey the AW(3) relations. This is achieved by introducing a natural coaction also constructed with the help of the R-matrix.

Bannai-Ito algebras and the universal R-matrix of osp(1|2)

The Bannai-Ito algebra $BI(n)$ is viewed as the centralizer of the action of $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ in the $n$-fold tensor product of the universal algebra of this Lie superalgebra. The generators of this centralizer are constructed with the help of the universal $R$-matrix of $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$. The specific structure of the $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ embeddings to which the centralizing elements are attached as Casimir elements is explained. With the generators defined, the structure relations of $BI(n)$ are derived from those of $BI(3)$ by repeated action of the coproduct and using properties of the $R$-matrix and of the generators of the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$.

Free-Fermion entanglement and orthogonal polynomials

We present a simple construction for a tridiagonal matrix $T$ that commutes with the hopping matrix for the entanglement Hamiltonian ${\cal H}$ of open finite free-Fermion chains associated with families of discrete orthogonal polynomials. It is based on the notion of algebraic Heun operator attached to bispectral problems, and the parallel between entanglement studies and the theory of time and band limiting. As examples, we consider Fermionic chains related to the Chebychev, Krawtchouk and dual Hahn polynomials. For the former case, which corresponds to a homogeneous chain, the outcome of our construction coincides with a recent result of Eisler and Peschel; the latter cases yield commuting operators for particular inhomogeneous chains. Since $T$ is tridiagonal and non-degenerate, it can be readily diagonalized numerically, which in turn can be used to calculate the spectrum of ${\cal H}$, and therefore the entanglement entropy.

The dual pair $\big(U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1)),\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2n)\big)$, $q$-oscillators and Askey-Wilson algebras

The universal Askey-Wilson algebra $AW(3)$ can be obtained as the commutant of $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ in $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))^{\otimes3}$. We analyze the commutant of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)\oplus\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)\oplus\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)$ in $q$-oscillator representations of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(6)$ and show that it also realizes $AW(3)$. These two pictures of $AW(3)$ are shown to be dual in the sense of Howe; this is made clear by highlighting the role of the intermediate Casimir elements of each members of the dual pair $\big(U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1)),\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(6)\big)$. We also generalize these results. A higher rank extension of the Askey-Wilson algebra denoted $AW(n)$ can be defined as the commutant of $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))$ in $U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1))^{\otimes n}$ and a dual description of $AW(n)$ as the commutant of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2)^{\oplus n}$ in $q$-oscillator representations of $\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2n)$ is offered by calling upon the dual pair $\big(U_q(\mathfrak{su}(1,1)),\mathfrak{o}_{q^{1/2}}(2n)\big)$.

Fractional Revival and Association Schemes

Fractional revival occurs between two vertices in a graph if a continuous-time quantum walk unitarily maps the characteristic vector of one vertex to a superposition of the characteristic vectors of the two vertices. This phenomenon is relevant in quantum information in particular for entanglement generation in spin networks. We study fractional revival in graphs whose adjacency matrices belong to the Bose-Mesner algebra of association schemes. A specific focus is a characterization of balanced fractional revival (which corresponds to maximal entanglement) in graphs that belong to the Hamming scheme. Our proofs exploit the intimate connections between algebraic combinatorics and orthogonal polynomials.

The Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra and the Heun operator of Askey-Wilson type

The Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra is introduced through generators $\{\boX,\boW\}$ and relations. These relations can be understood as an extension of the usual Askey-Wilson ones. A central element is given, and a canonical form of the Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra is presented. A homomorphism from the Heun-Askey-Wilson algebra to the Askey-Wilson one is identified. On the vector space of the polynomials in the variable $x=z+z^{-1}$, the Heun operator of Askey-Wilson type realizing $\boW$ can be characterized as the most general second order $q$-difference operator in the variable $z$ that maps polynomials of degree $n$ in $x=z+z^{-1}$ into polynomials of degree $n+1$.

Quantum Walks on Graphs of the Ordered Hamming Scheme and Spin Networks

It is shown that the hopping of a single excitation on certain triangular spin lattices with non-uniform couplings and local magnetic fields can be described as the projections of quantum walks on graphs of the ordered Hamming scheme of depth 2. For some values of the parameters the models exhibit perfect state transfer between two summits of the lattice. Fractional revival is also observed in some instances. The bivariate Krawtchouk polynomials of the Tratnik type that form the eigenvalue matrices of the ordered Hamming scheme of depth 2 give the overlaps between the energy eigenstates and the occupational basis vectors.

Convolution identities for Dunkl orthogonal polynomials from the $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ Lie superalgebra

New convolution identities for orthogonal polynomials belonging to the $q=-1$ analog of the Askey-scheme are obtained. A specialization of the Chihara polynomials will play a central role as the eigenfunctions of a special element of the Lie superalgebra $\mathfrak{osp}(1|2)$ in the positive discrete series representation. Using the Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, a convolution identity for the Specialized Chihara, the dual -1 Hahn and the Big -1 Jacobi polynomials is found. Using the Racah coefficients, a convolution identity for the Big -1 Jacobi and the Bannai-Ito polynomials is found. Finally, these results are applied to construct a bilinear generating function for the Big -1 Jacobi polynomials.
