Memory effects on the current induced propagation of spin textures in NdCo$_5$/Ni$_8$Fe$_2$ bilayers

Bilayers of NdCo$_5$/Ni$_8$Fe$_2$ can act as reconfigurable racetracks thanks to the parallel stripe domain configuration present in the hard magnetic material with weak perpendicular anisotropy (NdCo$_5$), and its imprint on the soft magnetic layer (Ni$_8$Fe$_2$). This pattern hosts spin textures with well defined topological charges and establishes paths for their deterministic propagation under the effect of pulsed currents, which has been studied as a function of externally applied fields by using Magnetic Transmission X-ray Microscopy. The experiments show guided vortex/antivortex propagation events within the Ni$_8$Fe$_2$ above a threshold current of $3\cdot10^{11}$ A/m$^2$. Opposite propagation senses have been observed depending on the topological charge of the spin texture, both in the remnant state and under an applied external field. Micromagnetic simulations of our multilayer reveal that the guiding effect and asymmetric propagation sense are due to the magnetic history of the hard magnetic layer. An exchange-bias-based memory effect acts as a magnetic spring and controls the propagation sense by favoring a specific orientation of the in plane magnetization, leading to a system which behaves as a hard-soft magnetic composite with reconfigurable capabilities for a controlled propagation of magnetic topological textures.

Study of the magnetoelastic effect in nickel and cobalt thin films at GHz range using X-ray microscopy

We use surface acoustic waves of 1 and 3 GHz in hybrid piezoelectric-magnetic systems with either cobalt or nickel as a magnetic layer to generate magnetoacoustic waves and directly image them using stroboscopic X-ray magnetic circular dichroism imaging. Our measurements visualize and quantify the amplitudes of both acoustic and magnetic components of the magnetoacoustic waves, which are generated in the ferromagnetic layer and can propagate over millimeter distances. Additionally, we quantifiedy the magnetoelastic strain component for cobalt and nickel through micromagnetic simulations. We obtained a drop in the magnetoacoustic signal at 3 GHz suggesting a speed limit for the efficient magnetoelastic coupling in our hybrid devices.

A Platform for Addressing Individual Magnetite Islands Grown Epitaxially on Ru(0001) and Manipulating Their Magnetic Domains

We have grown high-quality magnetite micrometric islands on ruthenium stripes on sapphire through a combination of magnetron sputtering (Ru film), high-temperature molecular beam epitaxy (oxide islands), and optical lithography. The samples have been characterized by atomic force microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism in a photoemission microscope. The magnetic domains on the magnetite islands can be modified by the application of current pulses through the Ru stripes in combination with magnetic fields. The modification of the magnetic domains is explained by the Oersted field generated by the electrical current flowing through the stripes underneath the magnetite nanostructures. The fabrication method is applicable to a wide variety of rock salt and spinel oxides.

Size effects in the Verwey transition of nanometer-thick micron-wide magnetite crystals

We have monitored the Verwey transition in micrometer-wide, nanometer-thick magnetite islands on epitaxial Ru films on Al2O3(0001) using Raman spectroscopy. The islands have been grown by high-temperature oxygen-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. Below 100 K and for thicknesses above 20 nm the Raman spectra correspond to those observed in bulk crystals and high quality thin films for the sub-Verwey magnetite structure. At room temperature the width of the cubic phase modes is similar to the best reported in bulk crystals, indicating a similar level of electron-phonon interaction. The evolution of the Raman spectra upon cooling suggests that for islands thicker than 20 nm, structural changes appear first at temperatures starting at 150 K and the Verwey transition itself takes place at around 115 K. However, islands thinner than 20 nm show a very different Raman spectra indicating that while a transition takes place, the charge order of the ultrathin islands differs markedly from their thicker counterparts

Magnetic domain wall pinning in cobalt ferrite microstructures

A detailed correlative structural, magnetic and chemical analysis of non-stoichiometric cobalt ferrite micrometric crystals was performed by x-ray magnetic circular dichroism combined with photoemission microscopy, low energy electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. The vector magnetization at the nanoscale is obtained from magnetic images at different x-ray incidence angles and compared with micromagnetic simulations, revealing the presence of defects which pin the magnetic domain walls. A comparison of different types of defects and the domain walls location suggests that the main source of pinning in these microcrystals are linear structural defects induced in the spinel by the substrate steps underneath the islands.

Direct X-ray detection of the spin Hall effect in CuBi

The spin Hall effect and its inverse are important spin-charge conversion mechanisms. The direct spin Hall effect induces a surface spin accumulation from a transverse charge current due to spin orbit coupling even in non-magnetic conductors. However, most detection schemes involve additional interfaces, leading to large scattering in reported data. Here we perform interface free x-ray spectroscopy measurements at the Cu L_{3,2} absorption edges of highly Bi-doped Cu (Cu_{95}Bi_{5}). The detected X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) signal corresponds to an induced magnetic moment of (2.7 +/- 0.5) x 10-12 μ_{B} A^{-1} cm^{2} per Cu atom averaged over the probing depth, which is of the same order as for Pt measured by magneto-optics. The results highlight the importance of interface free measurements to assess material parameters and the potential of CuBi for spin-charge conversion applications.

Generation and imaging of magnetoacoustic waves over millimetre distances

Using hybrid piezoelectric/magnetic systems we have generated large amplitude magnetization waves mediated by magneto-elasticity with up to 25 degrees variation in the magnetization orientation. We present direct imaging and quantification of both standing and propagating acoustomagnetic waves with different wavelengths, over large distances up to several millimeters in a nickel thin film.

Franckeite: a naturally occurring van der Waals heterostructure

The fabrication of van der Waals heterostructures, artificial materials assembled by individually stacking atomically thin (2D) materials, is one of the most promising directions in 2D materials research. Until now, the most widespread approach to stack 2D layers relies on deterministic placement methods which are cumbersome when fabricating multilayered stacks. Moreover, they tend to suffer from poor control over the lattice orientations and the presence of unwanted adsorbates between the stacked layers. Here, we present a different approach to fabricate ultrathin heterostructures by exfoliation of bulk franckeite which is a naturally occurring and air stable van der Waals heterostructure (composed of alternating SnS2-like and PbS-like layers stacked on top of each other). Presenting both an attractive narrow bandgap (<0.7 eV) and p-type doping, we find that the material can be exfoliated both mechanically and chemically down to few-layer thicknesses. We present extensive theoretical and experimental characterizations of the material's electronic properties and crystal structure, and explore applications for near-infrared photodetectors (exploiting its narrow bandgap) and for p-n junctions based on the stacking of MoS2 (n-doped) and franckeite (p-doped)

Centimeter-scale synthesis of ultrathin layered MoO3 by van der Waals epitaxy

We report on the large-scale synthesis of highly oriented ultrathin MoO3 layers using a simple and low-cost atmospheric pressure by van der Waals epitaxy growth on muscovite mica substrates. By this method we are able to synthetize high quality centimeter-scale MoO3 crystals with thicknesses ranging from 1.4 nm (two layers) up to a few nanometers. The crystals can be easily transferred to an arbitrary substrate (such as SiO2) by a deterministic transfer method and extensively characterized to demonstrate the high quality of the resulting crystal. We also study the electronic band structure of the material by density functional theory calculations. Interestingly, the calculations demonstrate that bulk MoO3 has a rather weak electronic interlayer interaction and thus it presents a monolayer-like band structure. Finally, we demonstrate the potential of this synthesis method for optoelectronic applications by fabricating large-area field-effect devices (10 micrometers by 110 micrometers in lateral dimensions), finding responsivities of 30 mA/W for a laser power density of 13 mW/cm2 in the UV region of the spectrum and also as an electron acceptor in a MoS2-based field-effect transistor.
