Shape and Displacement Fluctuations in Soft Vesicles Filled by Active Particles

We investigate numerically the dynamics of shape and displacement fluctuations of two-dimensional flexible vesicles filled with active particles. At low concentration most of the active particles accumulate at the boundary of the vesicle where positive particle number fluctuations are amplified by trapping, leading to the formation of pinched spots of high density, curvature and pressure. At high concentration the active particles cover the vesicle boundary almost uniformly, resulting in fairly homogeneous pressure and curvature, and nearly circular vesicle shape. The change between polarized and spherical shapes is driven by the number of active particles. The center-of-mass of the vesicle performs a persistent random walk with a long time diffusivity that is strongly enhanced for elongated active particles due to orientational correlations in their direction of propulsive motion. In our model shape-shifting induces directional sensing and the cell spontaneously migrate along the polarization direction.

Run-and-tumble particles, telegrapher's equation and absorption problems with partially reflecting boundaries

Absorption problems of run-and-tumble particles, described by the telegrapher's equation, are analyzed in one space dimension considering partially reflecting boundaries. Exact expressions for the probability distribution function in the Laplace domain and for the mean time to absorption are given, discussing some interesting limits (Brownian and wave limit, large volume limit) and different case studies (semi-infinite segment, equal and symmetric boundaries, totally/partially reflecting boundaries).

Generalized energy equipartition in harmonic oscillators driven by active baths

We study experimentally and numerically the dynamics of colloidal beads confined by a harmonic potential in a bath of swimming E. coli bacteria. The resulting dynamics is well approximated by a Langevin equation for an overdamped oscillator driven by the combination of a white thermal noise and an exponentially correlated active noise. This scenario leads to a simple generalization of the equipartition theorem resulting in the coexistence of two different effective temperatures that govern dynamics along the flat and the curved directions in the potential landscape.

A stroll in the energy landscape

We review recent results on the potential energy landscape (PES) of model liquids. The role of saddle-points in the PES in connecting dynamics to statics is investigated, confirming that a change between minima-dominated and saddle-dominated regions of the PES explored in equilibrium happens around the Mode Coupling Temperature. The structure of the low-energy saddles in the basins is found to be simple and hierarchically organized; the presence of saddles nearby in energy to the local minima indicates that, at non-cryogenic temperatures, entropic bottlenecks limit the dynamics.

Self-Starting Micromotors in a Bacterial Bath

Micromotors pushed by biological entities, like motile bacteria, constitute a fascinating way to convert chemical energy into mechanical work at the micrometer scale. Here we show, by using numerical simulations, that a properly designed asymmetric object can be spontaneously set into the desired motion when immersed in a chaotic bacterial bath. Our findings open the way to conceive new hybrid microdevices exploiting the mechanical power production of bacterial organisms. Moreover, the system provides an example of how, in contrast with equilibrium thermal baths, the irreversible chaotic motion of active particles can be rectified by asymmetric environments.

Ultrashort pulse propagation and the Anderson localization

We investigate the dynamics of a 10 fs light pulse propagating in a random medium by the direct solution of the 3D Maxwell equations. Our approach employs molecular dynamics to generate a distribution of spherical scatterers and a parallel finite-difference time-domain code for the vectorial wave propagation. We calculate the disorder-averaged energy velocity and the decay time of the transmitted pulse Versus the localization length for an increasing refractive index.

Condensation in disordered lasers: theory, 3D+1 simulations and experiments

The complex processes underlying the generation of a coherent-like emission from the multiple-scattering of photons and wave-localization in the presence of structural disorder are still mostly un-explored. Here we show that a single nonlinear Schroedinger equation, playing the role of the Schawlow-Townes law for standard lasers, quantitatively reproduces experimental results and three-dimensional time-domain parallel simulations of a colloidal laser system.

Light diffusion and localization in 3D nonlinear disordered media

Using a 3D Finite-Difference Time-Domain parallel code, we report on the linear and nonlinear propagation of light pulses in a disordered assembly of scatterers, whose spatial distribution is generated by a Molecular Dynamics code; refractive index dispersion is also taken into account. We calculate the static and dynamical diffusion constant of light, while considering a pulsed excitation. Our results are in quantitative agreement with reported experiments, also furnishing evidence of a non-exponential decay of the transmitted pulse in the linear regime and in the presence of localized modes. By using an high power excitation, we numerically demonstrate the ``modulational instability random laser'': at high peak input powers energy is transferred to localized states from the input pulse, via third-order nonlinearity and optical parametric amplification, and this process is signed by a power-dependent non-exponential time-decay of the transmitted pulse.

Glassy behavior of light in random lasers

A theoretical analysis [Angelani et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 96, 065702 (2006)] predicts glassy behaviour of light in a nonlinear random medium. This implies slow dynamics related to the presence of many metastable states. We consider very general equations (that also apply to other systems, like Bose-Condensed gases) describing light in a disordered non-linear medium and through some approximations we relate them to a mean-field spin-glass-like model. The model is solved by the replica method, and replica-symmetry breaking phase transition is predicted. The transition describes a mode-locking process in which the phases of the modes are locked to random (history and sample-dependent) values. The results are based on very general theory, and embrace a variety of physical phenomena.

Topology and phase transitions: from an exactly solvable model to a relation between topology and thermodynamics

The elsewhere surmised topological origin of phase transitions is given here new important evidence through the analytic study of an exactly solvable model for which both topology and thermodynamics are worked out. The model is a mean-field one with a k-body interaction. It undergoes a second order phase transition for k=2 and a first order one for k>2. This opens a completely new perspective for the understanding of the deep origin of first and second order phase transitions, respectively. In particular, a remarkable theoretical result consists of a new mathematical characterization of first order transitions. Moreover, we show that a "reduced" configuration space can be defined in terms of collective variables, such that the correspondence between phase transitions and topology changes becomes one-to-one, for this model. Finally, an unusual relationship is worked out between the microscopic description of a classical N-body system and its macroscopic thermodynamic behaviour. This consists of a functional dependence of thermodynamic entropy upon the Morse indexes of the critical points (saddles) of the constant energy hypersurfaces of the microscopic 2N-dimensional phase space. Thus phase space (and configuration space) topology is directly related to thermodynamics.

Diffusivity and configurational entropy maxima in short range attractive colloids

We study tagged particle diffusion at large packing fractions, for a model of particles interacting with a generalized Lennard-Jones 2n-n potential, with large n. The resulting short-range potential mimics interactions in colloidal systems. In agreement with previous calculations for short-range potential, we observe a diffusivity maximum as a function of temperature. By studying the temperature dependence of the configurational entropy -- which we evaluate with two different methods -- we show that a configurational entropy maximum is observed at a temperature close to that of the diffusivity maximum. Our findings suggest a relationbetween dynamics and number of distinct states for short-range potentials.

Connected Network of Minima as a Model Glass: Long Time Dynamics

A simple model to investigate the long time dynamics of glass-formers is presented and applied to study a Lennard-Jones system in supercooled and glassy phases. According to our model, the point representing the system in the configurational phase space performs harmonic vibrations around (and activated jumps between) minima pertaining to a connected network. Exploiting the model, in agreement with the experimental results, we find evidence for: i) stretched relaxational dynamics; ii) a strong T-dependence of the stretching parameter; iii) breakdown of the Stokes-Einstein law.
