Symmetry Resolved Entanglement of Excited States in Quantum Field Theory III: Bosonic and Fermionic Negativity

In two recent works, we studied the symmetry resolved Rényi entropies of quasi-particle excited states in quantum field theory. We found that the entropies display many model-independent features which we discussed and analytically characterised. In this paper we extend this line of investigation by providing analytical and numerical evidence that a similar universal behavior arises for the symmetry resolved negativity. In particular, we compute the ratio of charged moments of the partially transposed reduced density matrix as an expectation value of twist operators. These are ``fused" versions of the more traditionally used branch point twist fields and were introduced in a previous work. The use of twist operators allows us to perform the computation in an arbitrary number of spacial dimensions. We show that, in the large-volume limit, only the commutation relations between the twist operators and local fields matter, and computations reduce to a purely combinatorial problem. We address some specific issues regarding fermionic excitations, whose treatment requires the notion of partial time-reversal transformation, and we discuss the differences and analogies with their bosonic counterpart. We find that although the operation of partial transposition requires a redefinition for fermionic theories, the ratio of the negativity moments between an excited state and the ground state is universal and identical for fermions and bosons as well as for a large variety of very different states, ranging from simple qubit states to the excited states of free quantum field theories. Our predictions are tested numerically on a 1D Fermi chain.

Domain wall melting across a defect

We study the melting of a domain wall in a free-fermionic chain with a localised impurity. We find that the defect enhances quantum correlations in such a way that even the smallest scatterer leads to a linear growth of the entanglement entropy contrasting the logarithmic behaviour in the clean system. Exploiting the hydrodynamic approach and the quasiparticle picture, we provide exact predictions for the evolution of the entanglement entropy for arbitrary bipartitions. In particular, the steady production of pairs at the defect gives rise to non-local correlations among distant points. We also characterise the subleading logarithmic corrections, highlighting some universal features.

Boundary Symmetry Breaking in CFT and the String Order Parameter

We consider the ground state of a one-dimensional critical quantum system carrying a global symmetry in the bulk, which is explicitly broken by its boundary conditions. We probe the system via a string-order parameter, showing how it detects the symmetry breaking pattern. We give a precise characterization of the mechanism depicted above in Boundary CFT, and we find a general logarithmic scaling for the order parameter. As a first example we analyze the breaking of a $U(1)$ symmetry for complex free theories induced by a boundary pairing term. Moreover, we give predictions for the breaking of $U(N)$ in free theories, arising from a boundary mixing. We test our predictions with numerical calculations for some lattice realizations of free fermionic system with boundary symmetry breaking, finding a good agreement.

Entanglement evolution after a global quench across a conformal defect

We study the evolution of entanglement after a global quench in a one-dimensional quantum system with a localized impurity. For systems described by a conformal field theory, the entanglement entropy between the two regions separated by the defect grows linearly in time. Introducing the notion of boundary twist fields, we show how the slope of this growth can be related to the effective central charge that emerges in the study of ground-state entropy in the presence of the defect. On the other hand, we also consider a particular lattice realization of the quench in a free-fermion chain with a conformal defect. Starting from a gapped initial state, we obtain the slope via a quasiparticle ansatz and observe small discrepancies between the field theory and lattice results, which persist even in the limit of a vanishing gap.

Spreading of a local excitation in a Quantum Hierarchical Model

We study the dynamics of the quantum Dyson hierarchical model in its paramagnetic phase. An initial state made by a local excitation of the paramagnetic ground state is considered. We provide analytical predictions for its time evolution, solving the single-particle dynamics on a hierarchical network. A localization mechanism is found and the excitation remains close to its initial position at arbitrary times. Furthermore, a universal scaling among space and time is found related to the algebraic decay of the interactions as $r^{-1-σ}$. We compare our predictions to numerics, employing tensor network techniques, for large magnetic fields, discussing the robustness of the mechanism in the full many-body dynamics.

Symmetry Resolved Entanglement of Excited States in Quantum Field Theory II: Numerics, Interacting Theories and Higher Dimensions

In a recent paper we studied the entanglement content of zero-density excited states in complex free quantum field theories, focusing on the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy (SREE). By zero-density states we mean states consisting of a fixed, finite number of excitations above the ground state in an infinite-volume system. The SREE is defined for theories that possess an internal symmetry and provides a measure of the contribution to the total entanglement of each symmetry sector. In our work, we showed that the ratio of Fourier-transforms of the SREEs (i.e. the ratio of charged moments) takes a very simple and universal form for these states, which depends only on the number, statistics and symmetry charge of the excitations as well as the relative size of the entanglement region with respect to the whole system's size. In this paper we provide numerical evidence for our formulae by computing functions of the charged moments in two free lattice theories: a 1D Fermi gas and a complex harmonic chain. We also extend our results in two directions: by showing that they apply also to excited states of interacting theories (i.e. magnon states) and by developing a higher dimensional generalisation of the branch point twist field picture, leading to results in (interacting) higher-dimensional models.

Rényi entropy and negativity for massless complex boson at conformal interfaces and junctions

We consider the ground state of a theory composed by $M$ species of massless complex bosons in one dimension coupled together via a conformal interface. We compute both the Rényi entropy and the negativity of a generic partition of wires, generalizing the approach developed in a recent work for free fermions. These entanglement measures show a logarithmic growth with the system size, and the universal prefactor depends both on the details of the interface and the bipartition. We test our analytical predictions against exact numerical results for the harmonic chain.

Symmetry Resolved Entanglement of Excited States in Quantum Field Theory I: Free Theories, Twist Fields and Qubits

The excess entanglement resulting from exciting a finite number of quasiparticles above the ground state of a free integrable quantum field theory has been investigated quite extensively in the literature. It has been found that it takes a very simple form, depending only on the number of excitations and their statistics. There is now mounting evidence that such formulae also apply to interacting and even higher-dimensional quantum theories. In this paper we study the entanglement content of such zero-density excited states focusing on the symmetry resolved entanglement, that is on 1+1D quantum field theories that possess an internal symmetry. The ratio of charged moments between the excited and grounds states, from which the symmetry resolved entanglement entropy can be obtained, takes a very simple and universal form, which in addition to the number and statistics of the excitations, now depends also on the symmetry charge. Using form factor techniques, we obtain both the ratio of moments and the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies in complex free theories which possess $U(1)$ symmetry. The same formulae are found for simple qubit states.

Rényi entropy and negativity for massless Dirac fermions at conformal interfaces and junctions

We investigate the ground state of a (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theory built with $M$ species of massless free Dirac fermions coupled at one boundary point via a conformal junction/interface. Each CFT represents a wire of finite length $L$. We develop a systematic strategy to compute the Rényi entropies for a generic bipartition between the wires and the entanglement negativity between two non-complementary sets of wires. Both these entanglement measures turn out to grow logarithmically with $L$ with an exactly calculated universal prefactor depending on the details of the junction and of the bipartition. These analytic predictions are tested numerically for junctions of free Fermi gases, finding perfect agreement.

Symmetry resolved relative entropies and distances in conformal field theory

We develop a systematic approach to compute the subsystem trace distances and relative entropies for subsystem reduced density matrices associated to excited states in different symmetry sectors of a 1+1 dimensional conformal field theory having an internal U(1) symmetry. We provide analytic expressions for the charged moments corresponding to the resolution of both relative entropies and distances for general integer $n$. For the relative entropies, these formulas are manageable and the analytic continuation to $n=1$ can be worked out in most of the cases. Conversely, for the distances the corresponding charged moments become soon untreatable as $n$ increases. A remarkable result is that relative entropies and distances are the same for all symmetry sectors, i.e. they satisfy entanglement equipartition, like the entropies. Moreover, we exploit the OPE expansion of composite twist fields, to provide very general results when the subsystem is much smaller than the total system. We focus on the massless compact boson and our results are tested against exact numerical calculations in the XX spin chain.

Entanglement of the $3$-State Potts Model via Form Factor Bootstrap: Total and Symmetry Resolved Entropies

In this paper, we apply the form factor bootstrap approach to branch point twist fields in the $q$-state Potts model for $q\leq 3$. For $q=3$ this is an integrable interacting quantum field theory with an internal discrete $\mathbb{Z}_3$ symmetry and therefore provides an ideal starting point for the investigation of the symmetry resolved entanglement entropies. However, more generally, for $q\leq 3$ the standard Rényi and entanglement entropies are also accessible through the bootstrap programme. In our work we present form factor solutions both for the standard branch point twist field with $q\leq 3$ and for the composite (or symmetry resolved) branch point twist field with $q=3$. In both cases, the form factor equations are solved for two particles and the solutions are carefully checked via the $Δ$-sum rule. Using our analytic predictions, we compute the leading finite-size corrections to the entanglement entropy and entanglement equipartition for a single interval in the ground state.

U(1) symmetry resolved entanglement in free 1+1 dimensional field theories via form factor bootstrap

We generalise the form factor bootstrap approach to integrable field theories with U(1) symmetry to derive matrix elements of composite branch-point twist fields associated with symmetry resolved entanglement entropies. The bootstrap equations are solved for the free massive Dirac and complex boson theories, which are the simplest theories with U(1) symmetry. We present the exact and complete solution for the bootstrap, including vacuum expectation values and form factors involving any type and arbitrarily number of particles. The non-trivial solutions are carefully cross-checked by performing various limits and by the application of the Delta-theorem. An alternative and compact determination of the novel form factors is also presented. Based on the form factors of the U(1) composite branch-point twist fields, we re-derive earlier results showing entanglement equipartition for an interval in the ground state of the two models.

Symmetry resolved entanglement entropy of excited states in a CFT

We report a throughout analysis of the entanglement entropies related to different symmetry sectors in the low-lying primary excited states of a conformal field theory (CFT) with an internal U(1) symmetry. Our findings extend recent results for the ground state. We derive a general expression for the charged moments, i.e. the generalised cumulant generating function, which can be written in terms of correlation functions of the operator that define the state through the CFT operator-state correspondence. We provide explicit analytic computations for the compact boson CFT (aka Luttinger liquid) for the vertex and derivative excitations. The Fourier transform of the charged moments gives the desired symmetry resolved entropies. At the leading order, they satisfy entanglement equipartition, as in the ground state, but we find, within CFT, subleading terms that break it. Our analytical findings are checked against free fermions calculations on a lattice, finding excellent agreement. As a byproduct, we have exact results for the full counting statistics of the U(1) charge in the considered excited states.
