Symmetries and Charges in Weyl-Fefferman-Graham Gauge

We investigate the asymptotic symmetries of three-dimensional AdS Einstein gravity in the Weyl-Fefferman-Graham gauge, which is a generalization of the Fefferman-Graham gauge inducing a Weyl connection as part of the boundary structure. We show that this gauge arises as a natural intermediary step of the gauge-fixing procedure in the Chern-Simons formulation. We prove that the diffeomorphism required to go to the usual Fefferman-Graham gauge can be charged, and thus its implementation has physical repercussions. We discuss the holographic renormalization and the variational principle offering a new holographic take on this gauge and its charges.

Null Raychaudhuri: Canonical Structure and the Dressing Time

We initiate a study of gravity focusing on generic null hypersurfaces, non-perturbatively in the Newton coupling. We present an off-shell account of the extended phase space of the theory, which includes the expected spin-2 data as well as spin-0, spin-1 and arbitrary matter degrees of freedom. We construct the charges and the corresponding kinematic Poisson brackets, employing a Beltrami parameterization of the spin-2 modes. We explicitly show that the constraint algebra closes, the details of which depend on the non-perturbative mixing between spin-0 and spin-2 modes. Finally we show that the spin zero sector encodes a notion of a clock, called dressing time, which is dynamical and conjugate to the constraint. It is well-known that the null Raychaudhuri equation describes how the geometric data of a null hypersurface evolve in null time in response to gravitational radiation and external matter. Our analysis leads to three complementary viewpoints on this equation. First, it can be understood as a Carrollian stress tensor conservation equation. Second, we construct spin-$0$, spin-$2$ and matter stress tensors that act as generators of null time reparametrizations for each sector. This leads to the perspective that the null Raychaudhuri equation can be understood as imposing that the sum of CFT-like stress tensors vanishes. Third, we solve the Raychaudhuri constraint non-perturbatively. The solution relates the dressing time to the spin-$2$ and matter boost charge operators. Finally we establish that the corner charge corresponding to the boost operator in the dressing time frame is monotonic. These results show that the notion of an observer can be thought of as emerging from the gravitational degrees of freedom themselves. We briefly mention that the construction offers new insights into focusing conjectures.

Dynamics of Carrollian Scalar Fields

Adopting an intrinsic Carrollian viewpoint, we show that the generic Carrollian scalar field action is a combination of electric and magnetic actions, found in the literature by taking the Carrollian limit of the relativistic scalar field. This leads to non-trivial dynamics: even a single particle with non-vanishing energy can move in Carrollian physics.

Carroll geodesics

Using effective field theory methods, we derive the Carrollian analog of the geodesic action. We find that it contains both `electric' and `magnetic' contributions that are in general coupled to each other. The equations of motion descending from this action are the Carrollian pendant of geodesics, allowing surprisingly rich dynamics. As an example, we derive Carrollian geodesics on a Carroll-Schwarzschild background and discover an effective potential similar to the one appearing in geodesics on Schwarzschild backgrounds. However, the Newton term in the potential turns out to depend on the Carroll particle's energy. As a consequence, there is only one circular orbit localized at the Carroll extremal surface, and this orbit is unstable. For large impact parameters, the deflection angle is half the value of the general relativistic light-bending result. For impact parameters slightly bigger than the Schwarzschild radius, orbits wind around the Carroll extremal surface. For small impact parameters, geodesics get reflected by the Carroll black hole, which acts as a perfect mirror.

Cornering Quantum Gravity

After introducing the covariant phase space calculus, Noether's theorems are discussed, with particular emphasis on Noether's second theorem and the role of gauge symmetries. This is followed by the enunciation of the theory of asymptotic symmetries, and later its application to gravity. Specifically, we review how the BMS group arises as the asymptotic symmetry group of gravity at null infinity. Symmetries are so powerful and constraining that memory effects and soft theorems can be derived from them. The lectures end with more recent developments in the field: the corner proposal as a unified paradigm for symmetries in gravity, the extended phase space as a resolution to the problem of charge integrability, and eventually the implications of the corner proposal on quantum gravity.

From Asymptotic Symmetries to the Corner Proposal

These notes are a transcript of lectures given by the author in the XVIII Modave summer school in mathematical physics. The introduction is devoted to a detailed review of the literature on asymptotic symmetries, flat holography, and the corner proposal. It covers much more material than needed, for it is meant as a lamppost to help the reader in navigating the vast existing literature. The notes then consist of three main parts. The first is devoted to Noether's theorems and their underlying framework, the covariant phase space formalism, with special focus on gauge theories. The surface-charges algebra is shown to projectively represent the asymptotic symmetry algebra. Issues arising in the gravitational case, such as conservation, finiteness, and integrability, are addressed. In the second part, we introduce the geometric concept of corners, and show the existence of a universal asymptotic symmetry group at corners. A careful treatment of corner embeddings provides a resolution to the issue of integrability, by extending the phase space. In the last part we bridge asymptotic symmetries and corners by formulating the corner proposal. In essence, the latter focuses on the central question of extracting from classical gravity universal results that are expected to hold in the quantum realm. After reviewing the coadjoint orbit method and Atiyah Lie algebroids, we apply these concepts to the corner proposal. Exercises are solved in the notes, to elucidate the arguments exposed.

Universal Corner Symmetry and the Orbit Method for Gravity

A universal symmetry algebra organizing the gravitational phase space has been recently found. It corresponds to the subset of diffeomorphisms that become physical at corners -- codimension-$2$ surfaces supporting Noether charges. It applies to both finite distance and asymptotic corners. In this paper, we study this algebra and its representations, via the coadjoint orbit method. We show that generic orbits of the universal algebra split into sub-orbits spanned by finite distance and asymptotic corner symmetries, such that the full universal symmetry algebra gives rise to a unified treatment of corners in a manifold. We then identify the geometric structure that captures these algebraic properties on corners, which is the Atiyah Lie algebroid associated to a principal $GL(2,\mathbb{R})\ltimes \mathbb{R}^2$-bundle. This structure is suggestive of the existence of a novel quantum gravitational theory which would unitarily glue such geometric structures, with spacetime geometries appearing as semi-classical configurations.

Holographic Lorentz and Carroll Frames

Relaxing the Bondi gauge, the solution space of three-dimensional gravity in the metric formulation has been shown to contain an additional free function that promotes the boundary metric to a Lorentz or Carroll frame, in asymptotically AdS or flat spacetimes. We pursue this analysis and show that the solution space also admits a finite symplectic structure, obtained taking advantage of the built-in ambiguities. The smoothness of the flat limit of the AdS symplectic structure selects a prescription in which the holographic anomaly appears in the boundary Lorentz symmetry, that rotates the frame. This anomaly turns out to be cohomologically equivalent to the standard holographic Weyl anomaly and survives in the flat limit, thus predicting the existence of quantum anomalies in conformal Carrollian field theories. We also revisit these results in the Chern--Simons formulation, where the prescription for the symplectic structure admitting a smooth flat limit follows from the variational principle, and we compute the charge algebra in the boundary conformal gauge.

Boundary Conditions for Warped AdS$_3$ in Quadratic Ensemble

In the context of warped conformal field theories (WCFT), the derivation of the warped Cardy formula relies on the zero mode spectrum being bounded from below. Generically, this is not true for holographic WCFTs in "canonical" ensemble, whereas this condition is satisfied in the "quadratic" ensemble, making it more natural in holographic setups. In this work, we find a new set of boundary conditions in three-dimensional Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) such that the putative dual theory is a WCFT in quadratic ensemble. Surprisingly, imposing the equations of motion, we obtain a closed form metric spanned by two arbitrary chiral functions, analogous to the Bañados metrics in Einstein gravity. Surface charges for these boundary conditions are not a priori integrable and we discuss two choices of boundary conditions to make them so. We obtain the bulk thermodynamic entropy of warped BTZ black holes by making use of the warped Cardy formula, in its regime of validity. We also discuss the issue of identifying the vacuum in our solution space: demanding the enhancement of global symmetries selects only a family of solutions, out of which the unique vacuum must be carefully singled out.

Embeddings and Integrable Charges for Extended Corner Symmetry

We revisit the problem of extending the phase space of diffeomorphism-invariant theories to account for embeddings associated with the boundary of sub-regions. We do so by emphasizing the importance of a careful treatment of embeddings in all aspects of the covariant phase space formalism. In so doing we introduce a new notion of the extension of field space associated with the embeddings which has the important feature that the Noether charges associated with all extended corner symmetries are in fact integrable, but not necessarily conserved. We give an intuitive understanding of this description. We then show that the charges give a representation of the extended corner symmetry via the Poisson bracket, without central extension.

Isolated Surfaces and Symmetries of Gravity

Conserved charges in theories with gauge symmetries are supported on codimension-2 surfaces in the bulk spacetime. It has recently been suggested that various classical formulations of gravity dynamics display different symmetries, and paying attention to the maximal such symmetry could have important consequences to further elucidate the quantization of gravity. After establishing an algebraic off-shell derivation of the maximal closed subalgebra of the full bulk diffeomorphisms in the presence of an isolated corner, we show how to geometrically describe the latter and its embedding in spacetime, without constraining the geometry away from the corner, such as by assuming a foliation. The analysis encompasses arbitrary embedded surfaces, of generic codimensions $k$. The resulting corner algebra ${\cal A}_k$, calling $S$ the embedded surface and $M$ the bulk, is that of the group $(Diff(S)\ltimes GL(k,\mathbb{R}))\ltimes \mathbb{R}^k$. This result is independent of any dynamics or pseudo-Riemannian structure in the bulk. We then evaluate the Noether charges of ${\cal A}_2$ for Einstein-Hilbert dynamics and show that the Noether charge algebra gives a representation of the algebra ${\cal A}_2$, for finite proper distance corners in the bulk, while all other charges associated with $Diff(M)$ vanish.

Weyl Connections and their Role in Holography

It is a well-known property of holographic theories that diffeomorphism invariance in the bulk space-time implies Weyl invariance of the dual holographic field theory in the sense that the field theory couples to a conformal class of background metrics. The usual Fefferman-Graham formalism, which provides us with a holographic dictionary between the two theories, breaks explicitly this symmetry by choosing a specific boundary metric and a corresponding specific metric ansatz in the bulk. In this paper, we show that a simple extension of the Fefferman-Graham formalism allows us to sidestep this explicit breaking; one finds that the geometry of the boundary includes an induced metric and an induced connection on the tangent bundle of the boundary that is a Weyl connection (rather than the more familiar Levi-Civita connection uniquely determined by the induced metric). Properly invoking this boundary geometry has far-reaching consequences: the holographic dictionary extends and naturally encodes Weyl-covariant geometrical data, and, most importantly, the Weyl anomaly gains a clearer geometrical interpretation, cohomologically relating two Weyl-transformed volumes. The boundary theory is enhanced due to the presence of the Weyl current, which participates with the stress tensor in the boundary Ward identity.

Lie Algebroids and the Geometry of Off-shell BRST

It is well-known that principal bundles and associated bundles underlie the geometric structure of classical gauge field theories. In this paper, we explore the reformulation of gauge theories in terms of Lie algebroids and their associated bundles. This turns out to be a simple but elegant change, mathematically involving a quotient that removes spurious structure. The payoff is that the entire geometric structure involves only vector bundles over space-time, and we emphasize that familiar concepts such as BRST are built into the geometry, rather than appearing as adjunct structure. Thus the formulation of gauge theories in terms of Lie algebroids provides a fully off-shell account of the BRST complex. We expect that this formulation will have appealing impacts on the geometric understanding of quantization and anomalies, as well as entanglement in gauge theories. The formalism covers all gauge theories, and we discuss Yang-Mills theories with matter as well as gravitational theories explicitly.

New Chiral Gravity

The phase space of three-dimensional gravity with Compere-Song-Strominger (CSS) boundary conditions is endowed with asymptotic symmetries consisting in the semi-direct product of a Virasoro and a $\hat{u}(1)$ Kač-Moody algebra, and contains BTZ black holes whose entropy can be accounted for by the degeneracy of states of a Warped CFT. By embedding these boundary conditions in Topologically Massive Gravity, we observe the existence of two special points in the space of couplings parameterized by the AdS$_3$ radius $\ell$ and the Chern-Simons coupling $μ$. When $μ= \pm {1\over \ell}$, the asymptotic symmetries reduce to either a chiral Virasoro algebra or a pure $\hat{u}(1)$ Kač-Moody current algebra. At those points, black holes have positive energy while that of linearized excitations are non-negative.

Weyl Charges in Asymptotically Locally AdS$_3$ Spacetimes

We discuss an enhancement of the Brown-Henneaux boundary conditions in three-dimensional AdS General Relativity to encompass Weyl transformations of the boundary metric. The resulting asymptotic symmetry algebra, after a field-dependent redefinition of the generators, is a direct sum of two copies of the Witt algebra and the Weyl abelian sector. The charges associated to Weyl transformations are non-vanishing, integrable but not conserved due to a flux driven by the Weyl anomaly coefficient. The charge algebra admits an additional non-trivial central extension in the Weyl sector, related to the well-known Weyl anomaly. We then construct the holographic Weyl current and show that it satisfies an anomalous Ward-Takahashi identity of the boundary theory.

The Swampland at Large Number of Space-Time Dimensions

We discuss some aspects of swampland constraints - especially the swampland distance conjecture - in a large number of space-time dimensions $D$. We analyze Kaluza-Klein (KK) states at large $D$ and find that some KK spectra possess an interesting dependence on $D$. On the basis of these observations we propose a new large dimension conjecture. We apply it to KK states of compactifications to anti-de Sitter backgrounds where it predicts an upper bound on the dimension of space-time as a function of its characteristic radius. We also apply our conjecture to black hole spacetimes, whose entropies have a $D$-dependence very similar to that of the KK spectrum.

Topological Terms and the Misner String Entropy

The method of topological renormalization in anti-de Sitter (AdS) gravity consists in adding to the action a topological term which renders it finite, defining at the same time a well-posed variational problem. Here, we use this prescription to work out the thermodynamics of asymptotically locally anti-de Sitter (AlAdS) spacetimes, focusing on the physical properties of the Misner strings of both the Taub-NUT-AdS and Taub-Bolt-AdS solutions. We compute the contribution of the Misner string to the entropy by treating on the same footing the AdS and AlAdS sectors. As topological renormalization is found to correctly account for the physical quantities in the parity preserving sector of the theory, we then investigate the holographic consequences of adding also the Chern-Pontryagin topological invariant to the bulk action; in particular, we discuss the emergence of the parity-odd contribution in the boundary stress tensor.

Fefferman-Graham and Bondi Gauges in the Fluid/Gravity Correspondence

In three-dimensional gravity, we discuss the relation between the Fefferman--Graham gauge, the Bondi gauge and the Eddington--Finkelstein type of gauge, often referred to as the derivative expansion, involved in the fluid/gravity correspondence. Starting with a negative cosmological constant, for each gauge, we derive the solution space and the residual gauge diffeomorphisms. We construct explicitly the diffeomorphisms that relate the various gauges, and establish the precise matching of their boundary data. We show that Bondi and Fefferman--Graham gauges are equivalent, while the fluid/gravity derivative expansion, originating from a partial gauge fixing, exhibits an extra unspecified function that encodes the boundary fluid velocity. The Bondi gauge turns out to describe a subspace of the derivative expansion's solution space, featuring a fluid in a specific hydrodynamic frame. We pursue our analysis with the Ricci-flat limit of the Bondi gauge and of the fluid/gravity derivative expansion. The relations between them persist in this limit, which is well-defined and non-trivial. Moreover, the flat limit of the derivative expansion maps to the ultra-relativistic limit on the boundary. This procedure allows to unravel the holographic properties of the Bondi gauge for vanishing cosmological constant, in terms of its boundary Carrollian dual fluid.
