Aperiodic photonics of elliptic curves

In this paper we propose a novel approach to aperiodic order in optical science and technology that leverages the intrinsic structural complexity of certain non-polynomial (hard) problems in number theory and cryptography for the engineering of optical media with novel transport and wave localization properties. In particular, we address structure-property relationships in a large number (900) of light scattering systems that physically manifest the distinctive aperiodic order of elliptic curves and the associated discrete logarithm problem over finite fields. Besides defining an extremely rich subject with profound connections to diverse mathematical areas, elliptic curves offer unprecedented opportunities to engineer light scattering phenomena in aperiodic environments beyond the limitations of traditional random media. Our theoretical analysis combines the interdisciplinary methods of point patterns spatial statistics with the rigorous Green's matrix solution of the multiple wave scattering problem for electric and magnetic dipoles and provides access to the spectral and light scattering properties of novel deterministic aperiodic structures with enhanced light-matter coupling for nanophotonics and metamaterials applications to imaging and spectroscopy.

Local symmetry theory of resonator structures for the real-space control of edge states in binary aperiodic chains

We propose a real-space approach explaining and controlling the occurrence of edge-localized gap states between the spectral quasibands of binary tight binding chains with deterministic aperiodic long-range order. The framework is applied to the Fibonacci, Thue-Morse and Rudin-Shapiro chains, representing different structural classes. Our approach is based on an analysis of the eigenstates at weak inter-site coupling, where they are shown to generically localize on locally reflection-symmetric substructures which we call local resonators. A perturbation theoretical treatment demonstrates the local symmetries of the eigenstates. Depending on the degree of spatial complexity of the chain, the proposed local resonator picture can be used to predict the occurrence of gap-edge states even for stronger couplings. Moreover, we connect the localization behavior of a given eigenstate to its energy, thus providing a quantitative connection between the real-space structure of the chain and its eigenvalue spectrum. This allows for a deeper understanding, based on local symmetries, of how the energy spectra of binary chains are formed. The insights gained allow for a systematic analysis of aperiodic binary chains and offers a pathway to control structurally induced edge states.

Compact localized states of open scattering media

We study the compact localized scattering resonances of periodic and aperiodic chains of dipolar nanoparticles by combining the powerful Equitable Partition Theorem (EPT) of graph theory with the spectral dyadic Green's matrix formalism for the engineering of embedded quasi-modes in non-Hermitian open scattering systems in three spatial dimensions. We provide analytical and numerical design of the spectral properties of compact localized states in electromagnetically coupled chains and establish a connection with the distinctive behavior of Bound States in the Continuum. Our results extend the concept of compact localization to the scattering resonances of open systems with arbitrary aperiodic order beyond tight-binding models, and are relevant for the efficient design of novel photonic and plasmonic metamaterial architectures for enhanced light-matter interaction.

Edge Modes of Scattering Chains with Aperiodic Order

We study the scattering resonances of one-dimensional deterministic aperiodic chains of electric dipoles using the vectorial Green's matrix method, which accounts for both short- and long-range electromagnetic interactions in open scattering systems. We discover the existence of edge-localized scattering states within fractal energy gaps with characteristic topological band structures. Notably, we report and characterize edge-localized modes in the classical wave analogues of the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SHH) dimer model, quasiperiodic Harper and Fibonacci crystals, as well as in more complex Thue-Morse aperiodic systems. Our study demonstrates that topological edge-modes with characteristic power-law envelope appear in open aperiodic systems and coexist with traditional exponentially localized ones. Our results extend the concept of topological states to the scattering resonances of complex open systems with aperiodic order, thus providing an important step towards the predictive design of topological optical metamaterials and devices beyond tightbinding models.

Cloaking of Arbitrarily-Shaped Objects with Homogeneous Coatings

We present a theory for the cloaking of arbitrarily-shaped objects and demonstrate electromagnetic scattering-cancellation through designed homogeneous coatings. First, in the small-particle limit, we expand the dipole moment of a coated object in terms of its resonant modes. By zeroing the numerator of the resulting rational function, we accurately predict the permittivity values of the coating layer that abates the total scattered power. Then, we extend the applicability of the method beyond the small-particle limit, deriving the radiation corrections of the scattering-cancellation permittivity within a perturbation approach. Our method permits the design of invisibility cloaks for irregularly-shaped devices such as complex sensors and detectors.

Full-wave analytical solution of second-harmonic generation in metal nanospheres

We present a full-wave analytical solution for the problem of second-harmonic generation from spherical nanoparticles. The sources of the second-harmonic radiation are represented through an effective nonlinear polarization. The solution is derived in the framework of the Mie theory by expanding the pump field, the nonlinear sources and the second-harmonic fields in series of spherical vector wave functions. We use the proposed solution for studying the second-harmonic radiation generated from gold nanospheres as function of the pump wavelength and the particle size, in the framework of the Rudnick-Stern model. We demonstrate the importance of high-order multipolar contributions to the second-harmonic radiated power. Moreover, we investigate the p- and s- components of the SH radiation as the Rudnick-Stern parameters change, finding a strong variation. This approach provides a rigorous methodology to understand second-order optical processes in metal nanoparticles, and to design novel nanoplasmonic devices in the nonlinear regime.

Quantum Key Distribution with Fibonacci Orbital Angular Momentum States

Quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution (QKD) have been the most successful applications of quantum information processing, highlighting the unique capability of quantum mechanics, through the no-cloning theorem, to protect the security of shared encryption keys. Here we present a new and fundamentally different approach to high-capacity, high-efficiency QKD by exploiting interplay between cross-disciplinary ideas from quantum information and light scattering of aperiodic photonic media. The novelty of the proposed approach relies on a unique type of entangled-photon source and a new physical mechanism for efficiently sharing keys. The new source produces entangled photons with orbital angular momenta (OAM) randomly distributed among Fibonacci numbers. Combining entanglement with the mathematical properties of Fibonacci sequences leads to a new QKD protocol. This Fibonacci protocol is immune to photon-number-splitting attacks and allows secure generation of long keys from few photons. Unlike other protocols, reference frame alignment and active modulation of production and detection bases are unnecessary, since security does not require use of non-orthogonal polarization measurements.

Localized photonic bandedge modes and orbital angular momenta of light in a golden-angle spiral

We present a numerical study on photonic bandgap and bandedge modes in the golden-angle spiral array of air cylinders in dielectric media. Despite the lack of long-range translational and rotational order, there is a large PBG for the TE polarized light. Due to spatial inhomogeneity in the air hole spacing, the bandedge modes are spatially localized by Bragg scattering from the parastichies in the spiral structure. They have discrete angular momenta that originate from different families of the parastichies whose numbers correspond to the Fibonacci numbers. The unique structural characteristics of the golden-angle spiral lead to distinctive features of the bandedge modes that are absent in both photonic crystals and quasicrystals.

Observation of Transparency of Erbium-doped Silicon nitride in photonic crystal nanobeam cavities

One-dimensional nanobeam photonic crystal cavities are fabricated in an Er-doped amorphous silicon nitride layer. Photoluminescence from the cavities around 1.54 um is studied at cryogenic and room temperatures at different optical pump powers. The resonators demonstrate Purcell enhanced absorption and emission rates, also confirmed by time-resolved measurements. Resonances exhibit linewidth narrowing with pump power, signifying absorption bleaching and the onset of stimulated emission in the material at both 5.5 K and room temperature. We estimate from the cavity linewidths that Er has been pumped to transparency at the cavity resonance wavelength.

Coupled fiber taper extraction of 1.53 um photoluminescence from erbium doped silicon nitride photonic crystal cavities

Optical fiber tapers are used to collect photoluminescence emission at ~1.5 um from photonic crystal cavities fabricated in erbium doped silicon nitride on silicon. Photoluminescence collection via fiber taper is enhanced 2.5 times relative to free space, with a total taper collection efficiency of 53%. By varying the fiber taper offset from the cavity, a broad tuning range of coupling strength is obtained. This material system combined with fiber taper collection is promising for building on-chip optical amplifiers.

Stimulated emission in erbium doped silicon rich nitride waveguides

Stimulated emission of sensitized Erbium atoms is reported in silicon-rich silicon nitride waveguides. Visible pump and infrared probe measurements are carried out in waveguides fabricated from erbium-doped silicon rich silicon nitride. A decrease in the photoinduced absorption of the probe in the wavelength range of the erbium emission is observed and is attributed to stimulated emission from erbium atoms excited indirectly via the silicon excess in an SiNx matrix. A near 50% decrease in absorption is measured, corresponding to an 8% fraction of inverted erbium atoms. This fraction is an order of magnitude higher than that obtained in counterpart oxide systems possessing observable nanocrystals. Our results indicate that population inversion and gain at 1.54 um might be possible by optimizing the silicon excess in the SiNx matrix.

Enhanced Light Emission from Erbium Doped Silicon Nitride in Plasmonic Metal-Insulator-Metal Structures

Plasmonic gratings and nano-particle arrays in a metal-insulator-metal structures are fabricated on an erbium doped silicon nitride layer. This material system enables simple fabrication of the structure, since the active nitride layer can be directly grown on metal. Enhancement of collected emission of up to 12 is observed on resonance, while broad off-resonant enhancement is also present. The output polarization behavior of the gratings and nano-particle arrays is investigated and matched to plasmonic resonances, and the behavior of coupled modes as a function of inter-particle distance is also discussed.

Optical gaps, mode patterns and dipole radiation in two-dimensional aperiodic photonic structures

Based on the rigorous generalized Mie theory solution of Maxwell's equations for dielectric cylinders we theoretically investigate the optical properties of two-dimensional deterministic structures based on the Fibonacci, Thue-Morse and Rudin-Shapiro aperiodic sequences. In particular, we investigate band-gap formation and mode localization properties in aperiodic photonic structures based on the accurate calculation of their Local Density of States (LDOS). In addition, we explore the potential of photonic structures based on aperiodic order for the engineering of radiative rates and emission patterns in Erbium-doped silicon-rich nitride photonic structures.
