Assessing the orbital selective Mott transition with variational wave functions

We study the Mott metal-insulator transition in the two-band Hubbard model with different hopping amplitudes $t_1$ and $t_2$ for the two orbitals on the two-dimensional square lattice by using {\it non-magnetic} variational wave functions, similarly to what has been considered in the limit of infinite dimensions by dynamical mean-field theory. We work out the phase diagram at half filling (i.e., two electrons per site) as a function of $R=t_2/t_1$ and the on-site Coulomb repulsion $U$, for two values of the Hund's coupling $J=0$ and $J/U=0.1$. Our results are in good agreement with previous dynamical mean-field theory calculations, demonstrating that the non-magnetic phase diagram is only slightly modified from infinite to two spatial dimensions. Three phases are present: a metallic one, for small values of $U$, where both orbitals are itinerant; a Mott insulator, for large values of $U$, where both orbitals are localized because of the Coulomb repulsion; and the so-called orbital-selective Mott insulator (OSMI), for small values of $R$ and intermediate $U$'s, where one orbital is localized while the other one is still itinerant. The effect of the Hund's coupling is two-fold: on one side, it favors the full Mott phase over the OSMI; on the other side, it stabilizes the OSMI at larger values of $R$.

Variational wave functions for the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice: Spin liquids and spiral orders

By using variational wave functions and quantum Monte Carlo techniques, we investigate the complete phase diagram of the Heisenberg model on the anisotropic triangular lattice, where two out of three bonds have super-exchange couplings $J$ and the third one has instead $J^\prime$. This model interpolates between the square lattice and the isotropic triangular one, for $J^\prime/J \le 1$, and between the isotropic triangular lattice and a set of decoupled chains, for $J/J^\prime \le 1$. We consider all the fully-symmetric spin liquids that can be constructed with the fermionic projective-symmetry group classification [Y. Zhou and X.-G. Wen, arXiv:cond-mat/0210662] and we compare them with the spiral magnetic orders that can be accommodated on finite clusters. Our results show that, for $J^\prime/J \le 1$, the phase diagram is dominated by magnetic orderings, even though a spin-liquid state may be possible in a small parameter window, i.e., $0.7 \lesssim J^\prime/J \lesssim 0.8$. In contrast, for $J/J^\prime \le 1$, a large spin-liquid region appears close to the limit of decoupled chains, i.e., for $J/J^\prime \lesssim 0.6$, while magnetically ordered phases with spiral order are stabilized close to the isotropic point.

Solutions of the Two Dimensional Hubbard Model: Benchmarks and Results from a Wide Range of Numerical Algorithms

Numerical results for ground state and excited state properties (energies, double occupancies, and Matsubara-axis self energies) of the single-orbital Hubbard model on a two-dimensional square lattice are presented, in order to provide an assessment of our ability to compute accurate results in the thermodynamic limit. Many methods are employed, including auxiliary field quantum Monte Carlo, bare and bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo, method of dual fermions, density matrix embedding theory, density matrix renormalization group, dynamical cluster approximation, diffusion Monte Carlo within a fixed node approximation, unrestricted coupled cluster theory, and multi-reference projected Hartree-Fock. Comparison of results obtained by different methods allows for the identification of uncertainties and systematic errors. The importance of extrapolation to converged thermodynamic limit values is emphasized. Cases where agreement between different methods is obtained establish benchmark results that may be useful in the validation of new approaches and the improvement of existing methods.

One-dimensional spin liquid, collinear, and spiral phases from uncoupled chains to the triangular lattice

We investigate the Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice with two hopping parameters $t$ and $t^\prime$ in different spatial directions, interpolating between decoupled chains ($t=0$) and the isotropic triangular lattice ($t=t^\prime$). Variational wave functions that include both Jastrow and backflow terms are used to compare spin-liquid and magnetic phases with different pitch vectors describing both collinear and coplanar (spiral) order. For relatively large values of the on-site interaction $U/t^\prime \gtrsim 10$ and substantial frustration, i.e., $0.3\lesssim t/t^\prime \lesssim 0.8$, the spin-liquid state is clearly favored over magnetic states. Spiral magnetic order is only stable in the vicinity of the isotropic point, while collinear order is obtained in a wide range of inter-chain hoppings from small to intermediate frustration.

Phase diagram of the square lattice bilayer Hubbard model: a variational Monte Carlo study

We investigate the phase diagram of the square lattice bilayer Hubbard model at half filling with the variational Monte Carlo method for both the magnetic and the paramagnetic case as a function of interlayer hopping t_perp and on-site Coulomb repulsion U. With this study we resolve some discrepancies in previous calculations based on the dynamical mean field theory, and we are able to determine the nature of the phase transitions between metal, Mott insulator and band insulator. In the magnetic case we find only two phases: An antiferromagnetic Mott insulator at small t_perp for any value of U and a band insulator at large t_perp. At large U values we approach the Heisenberg limit. The paramagnetic phase diagram shows at small t_perp a metal to Mott insulator transition at moderate U values and a Mott to band insulator transition at larger U values. We also observe a reentrant Mott insulator to metal transition and metal to band insulator transition for increasing t_perp in the range of 5.5t < U < 7.5t. Finally, we discuss the obtained phase diagrams in relation to previous studies based on different many-body approaches.

Phase diagram of the triangular extended Hubbard model

We study the extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice as a function of filling and interaction strength. The complex interplay of kinetic frustration and strong interactions on the triangular lattice leads to exotic phases where long-range charge order, antiferromagnetic order, and metallic conductivity can coexist. Variational Monte Carlo simulations show that three kinds of ordered metallic states are stable as a function of nearest neighbor interaction and filling. The coexistence of conductivity and order is explained by a separation into two functional classes of particles: part of them contributes to the stable order, while the other part forms a partially filled band on the remaining substructure. The relation to charge ordering in charge transfer salts is discussed.

Importance of anisotropy in the spin-liquid candidate Me3EtSb[Pd(dmit)2]2

Organic charge transfer salts based on the molecule Pd(dmit)2 display strong electronic correlations and geometrical frustration, leading to spin liquid, valence bond solid, and superconducting states, amongst other interesting phases. The low energy electronic degrees of freedom of these materials are often described by a single band model; a triangular lattice with a molecular orbital representing a Pd(dmit)2 dimer on each site. We use ab initio electronic structure calculations to construct and parametrize low energy effective model Hamiltonians for a class of Me(4-n) EtnX[Pd(dmit)2]2 (X=As,P,N,Sb) salts and investigate how best to model these systems by using variational Monte Carlo (VMC) simulations. Our findings suggest that the prevailing model of these systems as a t-t' triangular lattice is incomplete, and that a fully anisotropic triangular lattice (FATL) description produces importantly different results, including a significant lowering of the critical U of the spin-liquid phase.

Spin-liquid versus spiral-order phases in the anisotropic triangular lattice

We study the competition between magnetic and spin-liquid phases in the Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice, which is described by two hopping parameters t and t' in different spatial directions and is relevant for layered organic charge-transfer salts. By using a variational approach that includes spiral magnetic order, we provide solid evidence that a spin-liquid phase is stabilized in the strongly-correlated regime and close to the isotropic limit t'/t=1. Otherwise, a magnetically ordered spiral state is found, connecting the (collinear) Néel and the (coplanar) 120° phases. The pitch vector of the spiral phase obtained from the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation is substantially renormalized in presence of electronic correlations, and the Néel phase is stabilized in a wide regime of the phase diagram, i.e., for t'/t < 0.75. We discuss these results in the context of organic charge-transfer salts.

Mott correlated states in the underdoped two-dimensional Hubbard model: variational Monte Carlo versus a dynamical cluster approximation

We investigate the properties of the frustrated underdoped Hubbard model on the square lattice using two complementary approaches, the dynamical cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory, and variational Monte Carlo simulations of Gutzwiller-Jastrow wavefunctions with backflow corrections. We compare and discuss data for the energy and the double occupancies, as obtained from both approaches. At small dopings, we observe a rapid crossover from a weakly correlated metal at low interaction strength U to a non-Fermi liquid correlated state with strong local spin correlations. Furthermore, we investigate the stability of the correlated state against phase separation. We observe phase separation only for large values of U or very large frustration. No phase separation is present for the parameter range relevant for the cuprates.

Strong renormalization of the Fermi-surface topology close to the Mott transition

The underlying Fermi surface is a key concept for strongly-interacting electron models and has been introduced to generalize the usual notion of the Fermi surface to generic (superconducting or insulating) systems. By using improved correlated wave functions that contain backflow and Jastrow terms, we examine the two-dimensional $t{-}t^\prime$ Hubbard model and find a non-trivial renormalization of the topology of the underlying Fermi surface close to the Mott insulator. Moreover, we observe a sharp crossover region, which arises from the metal-insulator transition, from a weakly interacting metal at small coupling to a resonating valence-bond superconductor at intermediate coupling. A violation of the Luttinger theorem is detected at low hole dopings.

Backflow correlations in the Hubbard model: an efficient tool for the metal-insulator transition and the large-U limit

We show that backflow correlations in the variational wave function for the Hubbard model greatly improve the previous results given by the Slater-Jastrow state, usually considered in this context. We provide evidence that, within this approach, it is possible to have a satisfactory connection with the strong-coupling regime. Moreover, we show that, for the Hubbard model on the lattice, backflow correlations are essentially short range, inducing an effective attraction between empty (holons) and doubly occupied sites (doublons). In presence of frustration, we report the evidence that the metal to Mott-insulator transition is marked by a discontinuity of the double occupancy, together with a similar discontinuity of the kinetic term that does not change the number of holons and doublons, while the other kinetic terms are continuous across the transition. Finally, we show the estimation of the charge gap, obtained by particle-hole excitations {\it à la Feynman} over the ground-state wave function.

Tunnelling matrix elements with antiferromagnetic Gutzwiller wave functions

We use a generalized Gutzwiller Approximation (GA) elaborated to evaluate matrix elements with partially projected wave functions and formerly applied to homogeneous systems. In the present paper we consider projected single-particle (hole) excitations for electronic systems with antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and obtain the corresponding tunnelling probabilities. The accuracy and the reliability of our analytical approximation is tested using the Variational Monte Carlo (VMC). Possible comparisons with experimental results are also discussed.

Interaction induced Fermi-surface renormalization in the $t_1{-}t_2$ Hubbard model close to the Mott-Hubbard transition

We investigate the nature of the interaction-driven Mott-Hubbard transition of the half-filled $t_1{-}t_2$ Hubbard model in one dimension, using a full-fledged variational Monte Carlo approach including a distance-dependent Jastrow factor and backflow correlations. We present data for the evolution of the magnetic properties across the Mott-Hubbard transition and on the commensurate to incommensurate transition in the insulating state. Analyzing renormalized excitation spectra, we find that the Fermi surface renormalizes to perfect nesting right at the Mott-Hubbard transition in the insulating state, with a first-order reorganization when crossing into the conducting state.

Spin-liquid and magnetic phases in the anisotropic triangular lattice: the case of $κ$-(ET)$_2$X

The two-dimensional Hubbard model on the anisotropic triangular lattice, with two different hopping amplitudes $t$ and $t^\prime$, is relevant to describe the low-energy physics of $κ$-(ET)$_2$X, a family of organic salts. The ground-state properties of this model are studied by using Monte Carlo techniques, on the basis of a recent definition of backflow correlations for strongly-correlated lattice systems. The results show that there is no magnetic order for reasonably large values of the electron-electron interaction $U$ and frustrating ratio $t^\prime/t = 0.85$, suitable to describe the non-magnetic compound with X=Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$. On the contrary, Néel order takes place for weaker frustrations, i.e., $t^\prime/t \sim 0.4 ÷0.6$, suitable for materials with X=Cu$_2$(SCN)$_2$, Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Cl, or Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br.

Metal-insulator transition and strong-coupling spin liquid in the $t{-}t^\prime$ Hubbard model

We study the phase diagram of the frustrated $t{-}t^\prime$ Hubbard model on the square lattice by using a novel variational wave function. Taking the clue from the backflow correlations that have been introduced long-time ago by Feynman and Cohen and have been used for describing various interacting systems on the continuum (like liquid $^3$He, the electron jellium, and metallic Hydrogen), we consider many-body correlations to construct a suitable approximation for the ground state of this correlated model on the lattice. In this way, a very accurate {\it ansatz} can be achieved both at weak and strong coupling. We present the evidence that an insulating and non-magnetic phase can be stabilized at strong coupling and sufficiently large frustrating ratio $t^\prime/t$.

Role of backflow correlations for the non-magnetic phase of the t-t' Hubbard model

We introduce an efficient way to improve the accuracy of projected wave functions, widely used to study the two-dimensional Hubbard model. Taking the clue from the backflow contribution, whose relevance has been emphasized for various interacting systems on the continuum, we consider many-body correlations to construct a suitable approximation for the ground state at intermediate and strong couplings. In particular, we study the phase diagram of the frustrated $t{-}t^\prime$ Hubbard model on the square lattice and show that, thanks to backflow correlations, an insulating and non-magnetic phase can be stabilized at strong coupling and sufficiently large frustrating ratio $t^\prime/t$.
