Dirac spinors and their application to Bianchi-I space-times in 5 dimensions

We consider a five-dimensional Einstein--Cartan spacetime upon which Dirac spinor fields can be defined. Dirac spinor fields in five and four dimensions share many features, like the fact that both are described by four-component spinor fields, but they are also characterized by strong differences, like the fact that in five dimensions we do not have the possibility to project on left-handed and right-handed chiral parts unlike what happens in the four-dimensional instance: we conduct a polar decomposition of the spinorial fields, so to highlight all similarities and discrepancies. As an application of spinor fields in five dimensions, we study Bianchi-I spacetimes, verifying whether the Dirac fields in five dimensions can give rise to inflation or dark-energy dominated cosmological eras or not.

General Dynamics of Spinors

In this paper, we consider a general twisted-curved space-time hosting Dirac spinors and we take into account the Lorentz covariant polar decomposition of the Dirac spinor field: the corresponding decomposition of the Dirac spinor field equation leads to a set of field equations that are real and where spinorial components have disappeared while still maintaining Lorentz covariance. We will see that the Dirac spinor will contain two real scalar degrees of freedom, the module and the so-called Yvon-Takabayashi angle, and we will display their field equations. This will permit us to study the coupling of curvature and torsion respectively to the module and the YT angle.

Spinor Fields, Singular Structures, Charge Conjugation, ELKO and Neutrino Masses

In this paper, we consider the most general treatment of spinor fields, their kinematic classification and the ensuing dynamic polar reduction, for both classes of regular and singular spinors; specifying onto the singular class, we discuss features of the corresponding field equations, taking into special account the sub-classes of Weyl and Majorana spinors; for the latter case, we study the condition of charge-conjugation, presenting a detailed introduction to a newly-defined type of spinor, that is the so-called ELKO spinor: at the end of our investigation, we will assess how all elements will concur to lay the bases for a simple proposal of neutrino mass generation.

Singularity-free spinors in gravity with propagating torsion

We consider the most general renormalizable theory of propagating torsion in Einstein gravity for the Dirac matter distribution and we demonstrate that in this case torsion is a massive axial-vector field whose coupling to the spinor gives rise to conditions in terms of which gravitational singularities are not bound to form; we discuss how our results improve those that are presented in the existing literature, and that no further improvement can be achieved unless one is ready to re-evaluate some considerations on the renormalizability of the theory.

Non-existence of rest-frame spin-eigenstate spinors in their own electrodynamics

We assume a physical situation where gravity with torsion is neglected for an electrodynamically self-interacting spinor that will be taken in its rest-frame and spin-eigenstate: we demonstrate that under this circumstance no solution exists for the system of field equations. Despite such a situation might look artificial nevertheless it represents the instance that is commonly taken as the basis for all computations of quantum electrodynamics.

Unveiling a spinor field classification with non-Abelian gauge symmetries

A spinor fields classification with non-Abelian gauge symmetries is introduced, generalizing the the U(1) gauge symmetries-based Lounesto's classification. Here, a more general classification, contrary to the Lounesto's one, encompasses spinor multiplets, corresponding to non-Abelian gauge fields. The particular case of SU(2) gauge symmetry, encompassing electroweak and electromagnetic conserved charges, is then implemented by a non-Abelian spinor classification, now involving 14 mixed classes of spinor doublets. A richer flagpole, dipole, and flag-dipole structure naturally descends from this general classification. The Lounesto's classification of spinors is shown to arise as a Pauli's singlet, into this more general classification.

Torsion Axial Vector and Yvon-Takabayashi Angle: Zitterbewegung, Chirality and all that

We consider propagating torsion as a completion of gravitation in order to describe the dynamics of curved-twisted space-times filled with Dirac spinorial fields; we discuss interesting relationships of the torsion axial vector and the curvature tensor with the Yvon-Takabayashi angle and the module of the spinor field, that is the two degrees of freedom of the spinor field itself: in particular, we shall discuss in what way the torsion axial vector could be seen as the potential of a specific interaction of the Yvon-Takabayashi angle, and therefore as a force between the two chiral projections of the spinor field itself. Chiral interactions of the components of a spinor may render effects of zitterbewegung, as well as effective mass terms and other related features: we shall briefly sketch some of the analogies and differences with the similar but not identical situation given by the Yukawa interaction occurring in the Higgs sector of the standard model. We will provide some overall considerations about general consequences for contemporary physics, consequences that have never been discussed before, so far as we are aware, in the present physics literature.

A geometrical assessment of spinorial energy conditions

We consider the problem of energy for spinor fields coupled to their surrounding curved-twisted space-time, and we show that when treated geometrically we cannot even be certain that there is a problem for the energy in the first place.

A simple assessment on inflation

We consider the torsional completion of gravity with spinor and scalar fields: we show how in this environment conditions of extreme symmetry or specific approximations imply the scalar field to be constant, so that slow-roll takes place and inflation occurs.

A simple assessment on the hierarchy problem

We consider the simplest extension of the standard model, where torsion couples to spinor as well as to scalar fields, and in which the cosmological constant problem is solved.

A generally-relativistic gauge classification of the Dirac fields

We consider generally-relativistic gauge transformations for the spinorial fields finding two mutually exclusive but together exhaustive classes in which fermions are placed adding supplementary information to the results obtained by Lounesto, and identifying quantities analogous to the momentum vector and the Pauli-Lubanski axial vector we discuss how our results are similar to those obtained by Wigner; by taking into account the system of Dirac field equations we will investigate the consequences for the dynamics: and in particular we shall address the problem of getting the non-relativistic approximation in a consistent way. We are going to comment on extensions.

Torsion Gravity for Dirac Fields

In this article we will take into account the most complete back-ground with torsion and curvature, providing the most exhaustive coupling for the Dirac field: we will discuss the integrability of the interaction of the matter field and the reduction of the matter field equations.

Torsion Gravity for Dirac Particles

In this paper we consider torsion gravity in the case of the Dirac field, and by going into the rest frame we study what happens when a uniform precession as well as a phase are taken into account for the spinor field; we discuss how partially conserved axial-vector currents and torsion-spin attractive potentials justify negative Takabayashi angle and energy smaller than mass: because in this instance the module goes to zero exponentially fast then we obtain stable and localized matter distributions suitable to be regarded as a description of particles.

Weakly-Interacting Massive Particles in Torsionally-Gravitating Dirac Theory

We shall consider the problem of Dark Matter in torsion gravity with Dirac matter fields; we will consider the fact that if WIMPs in a bath are allowed to form condensates then torsional effects may be relevant even at galactic scales: we show that torsionally-gravitating Dirac fields have interesting properties for the problem of DM. We discuss consequences.

Critical exact solutions for self-gravitating Dirac fields

We consider the Einstein-Dirac field equations describing a self-gravitating massive neutrino, looking for axially-symmetric exact solutions; in the search of general solutions, we find some that are specific and which have critical features, such as the fact that the space-time curvature turns out to be flat and the spinor field gives rise to a vanishing bi-linear scalar $\overlineψψ=0$ with non-vanishing bi-linear pseudo-scalar $i\overlineψγ^5ψ\not=0$: because in quantum field theory general computational methods are built on plane-wave solutions, for which bi-linear pseudo-scalar vanishes while the bi-linear scalar does not vanish, then the solutions we found cannot be treated with the usual machinery of quantum field theory. This means that for the Einstein-Dirac system there exist admissible solutions which nevertheless cannot be quantized with the common prescriptions; we regard this situation as yet another issue of tension between Einstein gravity and quantum principles. Possible ways to quench this tension can be seen either in enlarging the validity of quantum field theory or by restricting the space of the solutions of the Einstein-Dirac system of field equations.

Torsionally-gravitating charged matter fields and quanta

In the present article we shall consider the torsional completion of a gravitational background that is filled with electrodynamically interacting material fields, taken to be of fermionic type, eventually deriving properties like the impossibility of singularities and the possibility of confinement, both necessary for a correct quantum description.

Exact solutions for Weyl fermions with gravity

We consider the single-handed spinor field in interaction with its own gravitational field described by the set of field equations given by Weyl field equations written in terms of derivatives that are covariant with respect to the gravitational connection plus Einstein field equations soured with the energy tensor of the spinor: for the Weyl spinor and the ensuing spacetime of Weyl-Lewis-Papapetrou structure, we will find all exact solutions. The obtained solution for the metric tensor is that of a PP-wave spacetime while the spinor field is a flag-dipole.
