Unique Continuation Properties from one time for hyperbolic Schrödinger equations

In this paper, we investigate properties of unique continuation for hyperbolic Schrödinger equations with time-dependent complex-valued electric fields and time-independent real magnetic fields. We show that positive masses inside of a bounded region at a single time propagate outside the region and prove gaussian lower bounds for the solutions, provided a suitable average in space-time cylinders is taken.

On uniqueness of solutions to the surface electromigration equation

In this paper we investigate on uniqueness properties of solutions to the surface electromigration (SEM) equation, which is a generalisation of the more classical Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation of plasma physics with non-local perturbation terms. We will show that if the difference of two solutions has a sufficiently strong spatial decay at two different instants of time, then the two solutions coincide on the whole interval of time.

Improved Hardy-Rellich inequalities

We investigate Hardy-Rellich inequalities for perturbed Laplacians. In particular, we show that a non-trivial angular perturbation of the free operator typically improves the inequality, and may also provide an estimate which does not hold in the free case. The main examples are related to the introduction of a magnetic field: this is a manifestation of the diamagnetic phenomenon, which has been observed by Laptev and Weidl in \cite{LW1999} for the Hardy inequality, later by Evans and Lewis in \cite{EL2005} for the Rellich inequality; however, to the best of our knowledge, the so called Hardy-Rellich inequality has not yet been investigated in this regards. After showing the optimal inequality, we prove that the best constant is not attained by any function in the domain of the estimate.

Uniform resolvent estimates for critical magnetic Schrödinger operators in 2D

We study the $L^p-L^q$-type uniform resolvent estimates for 2D-Schrödinger operators in scaling-critical magnetic fields, involving the Aharonov-Bohm model as a main example. As an application, we prove localization estimates for the eigenvalue of some non self-adjoint zero-order perturbations of the magnetic Hamiltonian.

Spectral enclosures for the damped elastic wave equation

In this paper we investigate spectral properties of the damped elastic wave equation. Deducing a correspondence between the eigenvalue problem of this model and the one of Lamé operators with non self-adjoint perturbations, we provide quantitative bounds on the location of the point spectrum in terms of suitable norms of the damping coefficient.

Mass Propagation for Electromagnetic Schrödinger Evolutions

We investigate the validity of gaussian lower bounds for solutions to an electromagnetic Schrödinger equation with a bounded time-dependent complex electric potential and a time-independent vector magnetic potential. We prove that, if a suitable geometric condition is satisfied by the vector potential, then positive masses inside of a bounded region at a single time propagate outside the region, provided a suitable average in space-time cylinders is taken.

Stability and instability of breathers in the $U(1)$ Sasa-Satusuma and Nonlinear Schrödinger models

We consider the Sasa-Satsuma (SS) and Nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations posed along the line, in 1+1 dimensions. Both equations are canonical integrable $U(1)$ models, with solitons, multi-solitons and breather solutions, see Yang for instance. For these two equations, we recognize four distinct localized breather modes: the Sasa-Satsuma for SS, and for NLS the Satsuma-Yajima, Kuznetsov-Ma and Peregrine breathers. Very little is known about the stability of these solutions, mainly because of their complex structure, which does not fit into the classical soliton behavior by Grillakis-Shatah-Strauss. In this paper we find the natural $H^2$ variational characterization for each of them, and prove that Sasa-Satsuma breathers are $H^2$ nonlinearly stable, improving the linear stability property previously proved by Pelinovsky and Yang. Moreover, in the SS case, we provide an alternative understanding of the SS solution as a breather, and not only as an embedded soliton. The method of proof is based in the use of a $H^2$ based Lyapunov functional, in the spirit of the first and third authors, extended this time to the vector-valued case. We also provide another rigorous justification of the instability of the remaining three nonlinear modes (Satsuma-Yajima, Peregrine y Kuznetsov-Ma), based in the study of their corresponding linear variational structure (as critical points of a suitable Lyapunov functional), and complementing the instability results recently proved e.g. in a paper by the third author.

Eigenvalue bounds and spectral stability of Lamé operators with complex potentials

This paper is devoted to providing quantitative bounds on the location of eigenvalues, both discrete and embedded, of non self-adjoint Lamé operators of elasticity $-Δ^\ast + V$ in terms of suitable norms of the potential $V$. In particular, this allows to get sufficient conditions on the size of the potential such that the point spectrum of the perturbed operator remains empty. In three dimensions we show full spectral stability under suitable form-subordinated perturbations: we prove that the spectrum is purely continuous and coincides with the non negative semi-axis as in the free case.

Dispersive estimates for 2D-wave equations with critical potentials

We study the 2D-wave equation with a scaling-critical electromagnetic potential. This problem is doubly critical, because of the scaling invariance of the model and the singularities of the potentials, which are not locally integrable. In particular, the diamagnetic phenomenon allows to consider negative electric potential which can be singular in the same fashion as the inverse-square potential. We prove sharp time-decay estimates in the purely magnetic case, and Strichartz estimates for the complete model, involving a critical electromagnetic field.

Review on the stability of the Peregrine and related breathers

In this note, we review stability properties in energy spaces of three important nonlinear Schrödinger breathers: Peregrine, Kuznetsov-Ma, and Akhmediev. More precisely, we show that these breathers are unstable according to a standard definition of stability. Suitable Lyapunov functionals are described, as well as their underlying spectral properties. As an immediate consequence of the first variation of these functionals, we also present the corresponding nonlinear ODEs fulfilled by these NLS breathers. The notion of global stability for each breather above mentioned is finally discussed. Some open questions are also briefly mentioned.

Eigenvalue bounds for non-selfadjoint Dirac operators

In this work we prove that the eigenvalues of the $n$-dimensional massive Dirac operator $\mathscr{D}_0 + V$, $n\ge2$, perturbed by a possibly non-Hermitian potential $V$, are localized in the union of two disjoint disks of the complex plane, provided that $V$ is sufficiently small with respect to the mixed norms $L^1_{x_j} L^\infty_{\widehat{x}_j}$, for $j\in\{1,\dots,n\}$. In the massless case, we prove instead that the discrete spectrum is empty under the same smallness assumption on $V$, and in particular the spectrum is the same of the unperturbed operator, namely $σ(\mathscr{D}_0+V)=σ(\mathscr{D}_0)=\mathbb{R}$. The main tools we employ are an abstract version of the Birman-Schwinger principle, which include also the study of embedded eigenvalues, and suitable resolvent estimates for the Schrödinger operator.

Absence of eigenvalues of Dirac and Pauli Hamiltonians via the method of multipliers

By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions on the magnetic field and the complex, matrix-valued electric potential, which guarantee that the corresponding system of Schrödinger operators has no point spectrum. In particular, this allows us to prove analogous results for Pauli operators under the same electromagnetic conditions and, in turn, as a consequence of the supersymmetric structure, also for magnetic Dirac operators.

The Akhmediev Breather is unstable

In this note, we give a rigorous proof that the NLS periodic Akhmediev breather is unstable. The proof follows the ideas in [17], in the sense that a suitable modification of the Stokes wave is the global attractor of the local Akhmediev dynamics for sufficiently large time, and therefore the latter cannot be stable in any suitable finite energy periodic Sobolev space.

On the improvement of the Hardy inequality due to singular magnetic fields

We establish magnetic improvements upon the classical Hardy inequality for two specific choices of singular magnetic fields. First, we consider the Aharonov-Bohm field in all dimensions and establish a sharp Hardy-type inequality that takes into account both the dimensional as well as the magnetic flux contributions. Second, in the three-dimensional Euclidean space, we derive a non-trivial magnetic Hardy inequality for a magnetic field that vanishes at infinity and diverges along a plane.

Uniqueness results for Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation

In this paper we study uniqueness properties of solutions to the Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation of plasma physic. Given two sufficiently regular solutions $u_1, u_2,$ we prove that, if $u_1-u_2$ decays fast enough at two distinct times, then $u_1\equiv u_2.$

Absence of eigenvalues of two-dimensional magnetic Schroedinger operators

By developing the method of multipliers, we establish sufficient conditions on the electric potential and magnetic field which guarantee that the corresponding two-dimensional Schroedinger operator possesses no point spectrum. The settings of complex-valued electric potentials and singular magnetic potentials of Aharonov-Bohm field are also covered.
