Long-wave instability of periodic shear flows with constant magnetic field for the 2D resistive MHD equations

We investigate the long-wave linear stability and instability of the two-dimensional viscous, resistive Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equations, in vorticity-current formulation, on the periodic domain ${\mathbb T}_\alpha\times {\mathbb T} = \Big( {\mathbb R}/(\frac{2 \pi}{\alpha} {\mathbb Z}) \times {\mathbb R}/(2 \pi {\mathbb Z}) \Big)$, around a periodic shear flow $(U(y),0)$ coupled with a constant background magnetic field ${\bf b}=({\rm b}_1,{\rm b}_2)$. It is a non-trivial extension of a recent paper for the Navier-Stokes equations by Colombo, Dolce, Montalto & Ventura to the MHD setting in the spirit of the classical works of Kolmogorov, Meshalkin, Sinai and Yudovich. We establish explicit conditions on the shear flow profile $U(y)$ involving the viscosity $\nu$, the resistivity $\eta$ and the components of the background magnetic field ${\bf b}$ to obtain linear long-wave stability and instability in the regime $\alpha\ll 1$. The proof combines a non-perturbative normal form transformation decoupling the zero Fourier mode from the non-zero modes with sharp asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues bifurcating from the zero unperturbed eigenvalue with respect to the parameter $\alpha$. As a dynamical consequence, we obtain a splitting of the phase space into unstable and stable subspaces, on which solutions grow or decay exponentially in Sobolev norm.

Time-periodic vortices near translating symmetric dipole patches

We prove the existence of time-periodic solutions of the two-dimensional incompressible Euler equations bifurcating from a translating vortex pair. The reference configuration consists of two symmetric vortex patches of equal strength and opposite sign traveling at constant speed. In a regime of large separation between the vortices, the dynamics may be viewed as a small perturbation of an integrable system. Working in a co-moving frame and using the contour dynamics formulation, we reduce the problem to a nonlinear transport equation for the vortex boundaries. The linearized operator exhibits degeneracies associated with symmetries and transport effects. By combining a Lyapunov-Schmidt reduction, Nash-Moser scheme, and spectral analysis with sharp asymptotic expansions of the eigenvalues in order to overcome the degeneracy, we construct families of non-rigid, time-periodic vortex patch solutions for a large Cantor set of parameters. The analysis reveals that translating dipoles possess a surprisingly rich nearby dynamics, far beyond the classical rigid paradigm usually associated with vortex patch motion. More generally, the approach developed in this work is flexible and robust, and is expected to extend to a broader class of nonlocal PDEs from Fluid Mechanics with degenerate behaviours.

Quasi-periodic traveling electron layers

We consider the one dimensional space-periodic Vlasov-Poisson equations and construct, close to symmetric flat velocity strips, small amplitude traveling quasi-periodic electron-layers, namely strip-shaped patches of electrons in the phase space. These solutions are found for most values of the strip area. The proof uses a Nash-Moser construction together with reducibility arguments based on pseudo-differential homogeneous expansions and KAM reductions. Thanks to a suitable linear transformation of the unknowns, we reveal a connection between the electron patch problem and the classical, physically relevant, electronic Euler-Poisson system with cubic pressure law. As a direct, non trivial consequence, we obtain small-amplitude quasi-periodic traveling waves for this model as well. To the best of our knowledge, this work provides the first rigorous example of construction of quasi-periodic solutions for kinetic models.

Long time dynamics close to large amplitude quasi-periodic traveling waves in two dimensional forced rotating fluids

In this paper we consider the $\beta$-plane equation with a smooth external force which is a quasi-periodic traveling wave of large amplitude $O(\lambda^{\alpha - 1})$, $1 < \alpha < 2$, and with large speed of propagation of size $O(\lambda)$. In a previous paper, the second and the third author proved the existence of quasi-periodic traveling wave solutions of large amplitude of order $O(\lambda^{\theta})$, for some $\theta > 0$. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the long time dynamics for smooth initial data close to these traveling wave solutions. In particular, we shall prove that, for initial data sufficiently close to a fixed traveling wave solution (in the $H^s$ topology), the corresponding solution remains close to the traveling wave solution for arbitrary long time (independent of the size of the traveling wave solution). As a consequence, we prove that there are open sets of large initial for which one has almost global existence, namely such that the corresponding solution remains of the same size of the initial datum for arbitrary long time (independent of the size of the initial data). The proof combines several ingredients: an analysis of the linearized PDE at any traveling wave solution via normal form methods, a sharp analysis of the transformed nonlinear problem under the change of coordinates that diagonalizes the linearized equation and energy estimates.

Large amplitude quasi-periodic traveling waves in two dimensional forced rotating fluids

We establish the existence of quasi-periodic traveling wave solutions for the $\beta$-plane equation on $\mathbb{T}^2$ with a large quasi-periodic traveling wave external force. These solutions exhibit large sizes, which depend on the frequency of oscillations of the external force. Due to the presence of small divisors, the proof relies on a nonlinear Nash-Moser scheme tailored to construct nonlinear waves of large size. To our knowledge, this is the first instance of constructing quasi-periodic solutions for a quasilinear PDE in dimensions greater than one, with a 1-smoothing dispersion relation that is highly degenerate - indicating an infinite-dimensional kernel for the linear principal operator. This degeneracy challenge is overcome by preserving the traveling-wave structure, the conservation of momentum and by implementing normal form methods for the linearized system with sublinear dispersion relation in higher space dimension.

Space quasi-periodic steady Euler flows close to the inviscid Couette flow

We prove the existence of steady \emph{space quasi-periodic} stream functions, solutions for the Euler equation in vorticity-stream function formulation in the two dimensional channel ${\mathbb R}\times [-1,1]$. These solutions bifurcate from a prescribed shear equilibrium near the Couette flow, whose profile induces finitely many modes of oscillations in the horizontal direction for the linearized problem. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme, near such equilibrium we construct small amplitude, space reversible stream functions slightly deforming the linear solutions and retaining the horizontal quasi-periodic structure. These solutions exist for most values of the parameters characterizing the shear equilibrium. As a by-product, the streamlines of the nonlinear flow exhibit Kelvin's cat eye-like trajectories arising from the finitely many stagnation lines of the shear equilibrium.

Reducibility for a linear wave equation with Sobolev smooth fast driven potential

We prove a reducibility result for a linear wave equation with a time quasi-periodic driving on the one dimensional torus. The driving is assumed to be fast oscillating, but not necessarily of small size. Provided that the external frequency vector is sufficiently large and chosen from a Cantor set of large measure, the original equation is conjugated to a time-independent, block-diagonal one. With the present paper we extend the previous work \cite{FM19} to more general assumptions: we replace the analytic regularity in time with Sobolev one; the potential in the Schrödinger operator is a non-trivial smooth function instead of the constant one. The key tool to achieve the result is a localization property of each eigenfunction of the Schrödinger operator close to a subspace of exponentials, with a polynomial decay away from the latter.

A KAM approach to the inviscid limit for the 2D Navier-Stokes equations

In this paper we investigate the inviscid limit $ν\to 0$ for time-quasi-periodic solutions of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on the two-dimensional torus ${\mathbb T}^2$, with a small time-quasi-periodic external force. More precisely, we construct solutions of the forced Navier Stokes equation, bifurcating from a given time quasi-periodic solution of the incompressible Euler equations and admitting vanishing viscosity limit to the latter, uniformly for all times and independently of the size of the external perturbation. Our proof is based on the construction of an approximate solution, up to an error of order $O(ν^2)$ and on a fixed point argument starting with this new approximate solution. A fundamental step is to prove the invertibility of the linearized Navier Stokes operator at a quasi-periodic solution of the Euler equation, with smallness conditions and estimates which are uniform with respect to the viscosity parameter. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first positive result for the inviscid limit problem that is global and uniform in time and it is the first KAM result in the framework of the singular limit problems.

Pure gravity traveling quasi-periodic water waves with constant vorticity

We prove the existence of small amplitude time quasi-periodic solutions of the pure gravity water waves equations with constant vorticity, for a bidimensional fluid over a flat bottom delimited by a space periodic free interface. Using a Nash-Moser implicit function iterative scheme we construct traveling nonlinear waves which pass through each other slightly deforming and retaining forever a quasiperiodic structure. These solutions exist for any fixed value of depth and gravity and restricting the vorticity parameter to a Borel set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure.

Traveling quasi-periodic water waves with constant vorticity

We prove the first bifurcation result of time quasi-periodic traveling waves solutions for space periodic water waves with vorticity. In particular we prove existence of small amplitude time quasi-periodic solutions of the gravity-capillary water waves equations with constant vorticity, for a bidimensional fluid over a flat bottom delimited by a space-periodic free interface. These quasi-periodic solutions exist for all the values of depth, gravity and vorticity, and restricting the surface tension to a Borel set of asymptotically full Lebesgue measure.

Quadratic life span of periodic gravity-capillary water waves

We consider the gravity-capillary water waves equations for a bi-dimensional fluid with a periodic one-dimensional free surface. We prove a rigorous reduction of this system to Birkhoff normal form up to cubic degree. Due to the possible presence of 3-waves resonances for general values of gravity, surface tension and depth, such normal form may be not trivial and exhibit a chaotic dynamics (Wilton-ripples). Nevertheless we prove that for all the values of gravity, surface tension and depth, initial data that are of size $ε$ in a sufficiently smooth Sobolev space lead to a solution that remains in an $ε$-ball of the same Sobolev space up to times of order $ε^{-2}$. We exploit that the $3$-waves resonances are finitely many, and the Hamiltonian nature of the Birkhoff normal form.

Reducibility for a fast driven linear Klein-Gordon equation

We prove a reducibility result for a linear Klein-Gordon equation with a quasi-periodic driving on a compact interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions. No assumptions are made on the size of the driving, however we require it to be fast oscillating. In particular, provided that the external frequency is sufficiently large and chosen from a Cantor set of large measure, the original equation is conjugated to a time independent, diagonal one. We achieve this result in two steps. First, we perform a preliminary transformation, adapted to fast oscillating systems, which puts the original equation in a perturbative setting. Then we show that this new equation can be put to constant coefficients by applying a KAM reducibility scheme, whose convergence requires a new type of Melnikov conditions.
