Blind unblinding procedure for the PADME X17 data sample

The PADME experiment at the Frascati DA$Φ$NE LINAC has performed a search for the hypothetical X17 particle, with a mass of around 17 MeV, by scanning the energy of a positron beam striking a fixed target. The X17 should be produced from the resulting $e^+e^-$ annihilation. Since the expected mass of this particle is only roughly known, data sidebands cannot be clearly defined. Furthermore, the need to keep the analysis blind to potentially sizable signal contributions prevents a clear assessment even of the quality of the data sample in this search. In light of these challenges, this paper presents an innovative strategy adopted by the PADME Collaboration to perform data quality checks without disclosing the X17 sample. Moreover, the procedure designed to eventually unblind the data is described, together with the statistical approach adopted to extract the limits on the coupling between the X17 and the Standard Model.

Design and simulation of a transmon qubit chip for Axion detection

Quantum Sensing is a rapidly expanding research field that finds one of its applications in Fundamental Physics, as the search for Dark Matter. Devices based on superconducting qubits have already been successfully applied in detecting few-GHz single photons via Quantum Non-Demolition measurement (QND). This technique allows us to perform repeatable measurements, bringing remarkable sensitivity improvements and dark count rate suppression in experiments based on high-precision microwave photon detection, such as for Axions and Dark Photons search. In this context, the INFN Qub-IT project goal is to realize an itinerant single-photon counter based on superconducting qubits that will exploit QND for enhancing Axion search experiments. In this study, we present Qub-IT's status towards the realization of its first superconducting qubit device, illustrating design and simulation procedures and the characterization of fabricated Coplanar Waveguide Resonators (CPWs) for readout. We match target qubit parameters and assess a few-percent level agreement between lumped and distributed element simulation models. We reach a maximum internal quality factor of 9.2x10^5 for -92 dBm on-chip readout power.

Status and Prospects of PADME

The Positron Annihilation to Dark Matter Experiment (PADME) was designed and constructed to search for dark photons ($A'$) in the process $e^+e^-\rightarrowγA'$, using the positron beam at the Beam Test Facility (BTF) at the National Laboratories of Frascati (LNF). Since the observation of an anomalous spectra in internal pair creation decays of nuclei seen by the collaboration at the ATOMKI institute, the PADME detector has been modified and a new data-taking run has been undertaken to probe the existance of the so-called ``X17" particle

Dark sector studies with the PADME experiment

The Positron Annihilation to Dark Matter Experiment (PADME) uses the positron beam of the DA$Φ$NE Beam-Test Facility, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF) to search for a Dark Photon $A'$. The search technique studies the missing mass spectrum of single-photon final states in $e^+e^-\rightarrow A'γ$ annihilation in a positron-on-thin-target experiment. This approach facilitates searches for new particles such as long lived Axion-Like-Particles, protophobic X bosons and Dark Higgs. This talk illustrated the scientific program of the experiment and its first physics results. In particular, the measurement of the cross-section of the SM process $e^+e^-\rightarrow γγ$ at $\sqrt{s}$=21 MeV was shown.

Status of the SIMP Project: Toward the Single Microwave Photon Detection

The Italian institute for nuclear physics (INFN) has financed the SIMP project (2019-2021) in order to strengthen its skills and technologies in the field of meV detectors with the ultimate aim of developing a single microwave photon detector. This goal will be pursued by improving the sensitivity and the dark count rate of two types of photodetectors: current biased Josephson Junction (JJ) for the frequency range 10-50 GHz and Transition Edge Sensor (TES) for the frequency range 30-100 GHz. Preliminary results on materials and devices characterization are presented.

Measurement of the thermal expansion coefficient of an Al-Mg alloy at ultra-low temperatures

We describe a result coming from an experiment based on an Al-Mg alloy (~ 5% Mg) suspended bar hit by an electron beam and operated above and below the termperature of transition from superconducting to normal state of the material. The amplitude of the bar first longitudinal mode of oscillation, excited by the beam interacting with the bulk, and the energy deposited by the beam in the bar are the quantities measured by the experiment. These quantities, inserted in the equations describing the mechanism of the mode excitation and complemented by an independent measurement of the specific heat, allow us to determine the linear expansion coefficient of the material.
