A new analysis of the "hep" S-factor and the "hen" cross section

We present a new accurate analysis of the $^3$He$(p,e^+ν_e)$${}^4$He (''hep'') reaction at astrophysical energies. The S-factor is computed using a state-of-the-art method to calculate the four-nucleon scattering and bound-state wave functions (the hyperspherical harmonic expansion), and by using nuclear interactions and accompanying electroweak nuclear currents obtained within the chiral effective field theory framework. Our analysis includes a detailed examination of the theoretical uncertainties coming from two different sources: the truncation of the interaction and current chiral expansions, and the model dependence. Our recommended final theoretical value for the hep S-factor at zero energyis $S(0)=(8.7\pm 0.9)\times 10^{-20}$ keV b. We provide also the energy spectrum of the outgoing hep positrons which may be measured in future experiments. We include also an analysis of the ''sister'' reaction $^3$He$(n,γ)$${}^4$He (''hen'') at low energies, showing that the calculation well reproduce the total cross section from thermal energies to few MeV, validating our results on the hep reaction.

Partial-wave decomposition of isospin-projected subleading three-nucleon contact interactions

We analyze the subleading three-nucleon contact interaction terms at N4LO in chiral effective field theory. We perform the isospin projection into $T=1/2$ and $T=3/2$ states, and find that only eleven of the thirteen operators contribute in the $T=1/2$ channel. By projection on the partial waves of the asymptotic configuration of $N-d$ scattering states in momentum space, we find contributions from ten combinations of LECs. These results provide a useful basis for including N4LO three-body forces in few-body calculations and for constraining them through numerical fits to data.

Relativistic constraints on 3N contact interactions

In this paper we analyze the relativistic corrections to the leading order three-nucleon (3N) contact interactions. These boost corrections are derived first from the nonrelativistic reduction of covariant Lagrangians and later from the Poincaré algebra constraints on nonrelativistic theories. We show that in order to describe the 3N potential in reference frames other than the center-of-mass frame, the inclusion of five additional terms with fixed coefficients is required. These terms will be relevant in systems with mass number A>3. How they will affect EFT calculations of binding energies and scattering observables in these systems should be investigated.

Subleading contributions to $N$-boson systems inside the universal window

We study bosonic systems in the regime in which the two-body system has a shallow bound state or, equivalently, a large value of the two-body scattering length. Using the effective field theory framework as a guide, we construct a series of potential terms which have decreasing importance in the description of the binding energy of the systems. The leading order potential terms consist of a two-body term, usually attractive, plus a three-body term, usually repulsive; this last term is required to prevent the collapse of systems with more than two particles. At this order, the parametrization of the two-body potential is done to obtain a correct description of the scattering length, which governs the dynamics in this regime, whereas the three-body term fixes a three-body datum. We investigate the role of the cut-off in the leading order description and we extend the exploration beyond the leading order by including the next-to-leading order terms in both, the two- and three-body potentials. We use the requirement of the stability of the N-body system, whose energy is variationally estimated, to introduce the three-body forces. The potential parametrization, as a function of the cut-off, is fixed to describe the energy of 4 He clusters up to seven particles within the expected accuracy. Finally, we also explore the possibility to describe at the same time the atom-dimer scattering length.

Local chiral potentials and the structure of light nuclei

We present fully local versions of the minimally non-local nucleon-nucleon potentials constructed in a previous paper [M.\ Piarulli {\it et al.}, Phys.\ Rev.\ C {\bf 91}, 024003 (2015)], and use them in hypersperical-harmonics and quantum Monte Carlo calculations of ground and excited states of $^3$H, $^3$He, $^4$He, $^6$He, and $^6$Li nuclei. The long-range part of these local potentials includes one- and two-pion exchange contributions without and with $Δ$-isobars in the intermediate states up to order $Q^3$ ($Q$ denotes generically the low momentum scale) in the chiral expansion, while the short-range part consists of contact interactions up to order $Q^4$. The low-energy constants multiplying these contact interactions are fitted to the 2013 Granada database in two different ranges of laboratory energies, either 0--125 MeV or 0--200 MeV, and to the deuteron binding energy and $nn$ singlet scattering length. Fits to these data are performed for three models characterized by long- and short-range cutoffs, $R_{\rm L}$ and $R_{\rm S}$ respectively, ranging from $(R_{\rm L},R_{\rm S})=(1.2,0.8)$ fm down to $(0.8,0.6)$ fm. The long-range (short-range) cutoff regularizes the one- and two-pion exchange (contact) part of the potential.

Echoes from the Moon

We report on a determination of the Earth-Moon distance performed by students of an Italian high school, based on measurements of the time delay of the "echo" in the radio communications between Nasa mission control in Houston and the Apollo astronauts on the lunar surface. By using an open-source audio-editing software, the distance can be determined with three digits accuracy, allowing to detect the effect due to the eccentricity of the orbit of the Moon.

Paramagnetic effect of light quark loops on Chiral Symmetry Breaking

We argue that light quark loops produce a paramagnetic suppression of infrared-sensitive order parameters such as , as the number N_f of light fermions increases. The possibly strong dependence of on N_f is related to the observed Zweig rule violation in the scalar channel. Presuming the existence of a chiral phase transition for not too large N_f, we discuss the phenomenological possibilities of separately determining the two-flavour and three-flavour condensates and the quark mass ratio r=2m_s/(m_u+m_d). The issue is closely related to the interpretation of new forthcoming precise pi-pi data at low energy.

The decay tau -> 3 pi + nu(tau) as a probe of the mechanism of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking

The decays tau -> 3 pi + nu(tau) are analyzed at one loop order in the framework of Generalized Chiral Perturbation Theory, in order to test the sensitivity to the size of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking parameters, contained in the S-wave. The latter, due to a kinematical suppression, at threshold, of the P-wave, is relatively large enough to be detectable at high energy machines, through azimuthal left-right asymmetries. This quantity (for the pi- pi- pi+ mode), integrated from threshold to Q^2 = 0.35 GeV^2, varies from (17 +- 3) % in the standard case of large condensate up to (40 +- 5) % in the extreme case of tiny condensate. The feasibility of such measurement at high luminosity colliders (e.g. CLEO) is discussed. This method provides a completely independent cross-check of forthcoming experimental determination of the quark condensate, based on low energy pi-pi scattering.
