Heat transport in driven quantum systems: Comparison between the Floquet-Redfield equation and the master equation in the instantaneous eigenbasis

We provide a comprehensive study of heat transport in periodically driven quantum systems using a combination of master equation and Floquet approach. We give exact results (within the weak coupling Redfield theory, with no Markovian or secular approximations) and compare them with alternative approaches involving further approximations. Numerical and analytical results obtained in their appropriate driving regimes are provided for the driven spin boson-model. The adiabatic regime, which is relevant to thermal machines, is discussed.

Impact of Nonlinearities on Local Kinetic and Thermokinetic Uncertainty Relations in Bosonic Transport

The precision of transport observables can be bounded by the entropy production and the activity of the transport process via kinetic and thermokinetic uncertainty relations. In linear bosonic systems, such uncertainty relations can provide tight bounds when the activity is replaced by a local activity of the measurement contact of interest---even in the strong-coupling regime. How much nonlinearities (or interactions) impact the validity and predictiveness of these local bounds and how much this impact depends on the concrete definition of activity are open questions that we address for two experimentally relevant model systems, a harmonic oscillator network and the intrinsically nonlinear spin-boson model. We thereby provide experimentally testable predictions on how nonlinearities impact or even break local kinetic and thermokinetic precision bounds.

Heat measurement of quantum interference

Coherence is a key property of quantum systems, and it plays a central role in the operation and performance of quantum heat engines and refrigerators. Despite its importance for the fundamental understanding in quantum thermodynamics and its technological implications, coherence effects in heat transport have not been observed previously. Here, we measure quantum features in the heat transfer between a qubit and a thermal bath. The system is formed of a driven flux qubit galvanically coupled to a $λ/4$ coplanar-waveguide resonator that is coupled to a heat reservoir. This thermal bath is a normal-metal mesoscopic resistor, whose temperature can be measured and controlled. We detect interference patterns in the heat current due to driving-induced coherence. In particular, resonance peaks in the heat transferred to the bath are found at driving frequencies which are integer fractions of the resonator frequency. A selection rule on the even/odd parity of the peaks holds at the qubit symmetry point. We present a theoretical model based on Floquet theory that captures the experimental results. The studied system provides a platform for studying the role of coherence in quantum thermodynamics. Our work opens the possibility to demonstrate a true quantum thermal machine where heat is measured directly.

Thermal rectification in a qubit-resonator system

A qubit-oscillator junction connecting as a series two bosonic heat baths at different temperatures can display heat valve and diode effects. In particular, the rectification can change in magnitude and even in sign, implying an inversion of the preferential direction for the heat current with respect to the temperature bias. We perform a systematic study of these effects in a circuit QED model of qubit-oscillator system and find that the features of current and rectification crucially depend on the qubit-oscillator coupling. While at small coupling, transport occurs via a resonant mechanism between the sub-systems, in the ultrastrong coupling regime the junction is a unique, highly hybridized system and the current becomes largely insensitive to the detuning. Correspondingly, the rectification undergoes a change of sign. In the nonlinear transport regime, the coupling strength determines whether the current scales sub- or super-linearly with the temperature bias and whether the rectification, which increases in magnitude with the bias, is positive or negative. We also find that steady-state coherence largely suppresses the current and enhances rectification. An insight on these behaviors with respect to changes in the system parameters is provided by analytical approximate formulas.

Transmission spectra of an ultrastrongly coupled qubit-dissipative resonator system

We calculate the transmission spectra of a flux qubit coupled to a dissipative resonator in the ultrastrong coupling regime. Such a qubit-oscillator system constitutes the building block of superconducting circuit QED platforms. The calculated transmission of a weak probe field quantifies the response of the qubit, in frequency domain, under the sole influence of the oscillator and of its dissipative environment, an Ohmic heat bath. We find the distinctive features of the qubit-resonator system, namely two-dip structures in the calculated transmission, modified by the presence of the dissipative environment. The relative magnitude, positions, and broadening of the dips are determined by the interplay among qubit-oscillator detuning, the strength of their coupling, and the interaction with the heat bath.

Asymptotic Floquet states of non-Markovian systems

We propose a method to find asymptotic states of a class of periodically modulated open systems which are outside the range of validity of the Floquet theory due to the presence of memory effects. The method is based on a Floquet treatment of the time-local, memoryless dynamics taking place in a minimally enlarged state space where the original system is coupled to auxiliary -- typically non-physical -- variables. A projection of the Floquet solution into the physical subspace returns the sought asymptotic state of the system. The spectral gap of the Floquet propagator acting in the enlarged state space can be used to estimate the relaxation time. We illustrate the method with a modulated version of quantum random walk model.

Dissipative dynamics in a quantum bistable system: Crossover from weak to strong damping

The dissipative dynamics of a quantum bistable system coupled to a Ohmic heat bath is investigated beyond the spin-boson approximation. Within the path-integral approach to quantum dissipation, we propose an approximation scheme which exploits the separation of time scales between intra- and interwell (tunneling) dynamics. The resulting generalized master equation for the populations in a space localized basis enables us to investigate a wide range of temperatures and system-environment coupling strengths. A phase diagram in the coupling-temperature space is provided to give a comprehensive account of the different dynamical regimes.

Quantum resonant activation

Quantum resonant activation is investigated for the archetype setup of an externally driven two-state (spin-boson) system subjected to strong dissipation by means of both analytical and extensive numerical calculations. The phenomenon of resonant activation emerges in the presence of either randomly fluctuating or deterministic periodically varying driving fields. Addressing the incoherent regime, a characteristic minimum emerges in the mean first passage time to reach an absorbing neighboring state whenever the intrinsic time scale of the modulation matches the characteristic time scale of the system dynamics. For the case of deterministic periodic driving, the first passage time probability density function (pdf) displays a complex, multi-peaked behavior, which depends crucially on the details of initial phase, frequency, and strength of the driving. As an interesting feature we find that the mean first passage time enters the resonant activation regime at a critical frequency $ν^*$ which depends very weakly on the strength of the driving. Moreover, we provide the relation between the first passage time pdf and the statistics of residence times.

Quantum dissipative dynamics of a bistable system in the sub-Ohmic to super-Ohmic regime

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a multilevel bistable system coupled to a bosonic heat bath beyond the perturbative regime. We consider different spectral densities of the bath, in the transition from sub-Ohmic to super-Ohmic dissipation, and different cutoff frequencies. The study is carried out by using the real-time path integral approach of the Feynman-Vernon influence functional. We find that, in the crossover dynamical regime characterized by damped \emph{intrawell} oscillations and incoherent tunneling, the short time behavior and the time scales of the relaxation starting from a nonequilibrium initial condition depend nontrivially on the spectral properties of the heat bath.
