Higher genus Cherry flows and full families of GIETs

Cherry flows are classical examples of $C^\infty$ flows on the two-dimensional torus exhibiting non-trivial recurrent dynamics. For every higher genus $g\geq1$ we construct a $C^\infty$ parameter family of flows whose first return map is a generalized interval exchange transformation (GIET) with flat pieces. In such family, for every interval exchange transformation $T$ satisfying the Keane property, there are parameters corresponding to a Cherry flow whose return map is semi-conjugate to $T$. In particular, for each $k=1,\ldots,g$, our family contains a Cherry flow whose unique quasi-minimal set supports exactly $k$ ergodic invariant measures. The construction relies on a Full Family Theorem for GIETs with flat pieces, which establishes the realization of every admissible Rauzy renormalization path within a specific finite-dimensional family with the optimal number of parameters.

On the measure of products from the middle-third Cantor set

We prove upper and lower bounds for the Lebesgue measure of the set of products $xy$ with $x$ and $y$ in the middle-third Cantor set. Our method is inspired by Athreya, Reznick and Tyson, but a different subdivision of the Cantor set provides a more rapidly converging approximation formula.

A genus 4 origami with minimal hitting time and an intersection property

In a minimal flow, the hitting time is the exponent of the power law, as r goes to zero, for the time needed by orbits to become r-dense. We show that on the so-called Ornithorynque origami the hitting time of the flow in an irrational slope equals the diophantine type of the slope. We give a general criterion for such equality. In general, for genus at least two, hitting time is strictly bigger than diophantine type.

On good approximations and Bowen-Series expansion

We consider the continued fraction expansion of real numbers under the action of a non-uniform lattice in PSL(2,R) and prove metric relations between the convergents and a natural geometric notion of good approximations.

Transfer operators and dimension of bad sets for non-uniform Fuchsian lattices

The set of real numbers which are badly approximable by rationals admits an exhaustion by sets Bad($\epsilon$), whose dimension converges to 1 as $\epsilon$ goes to zero. D. Hensley computed the asymptotic for the dimension up to the first order in $\epsilon$, via an analogous estimate for the set of real numbers whose continued fraction has all entries uniformly bounded. We consider diophantine approximations by parabolic fixed points of any non-uniform lattice in PSL(2,R) and a geometric notion of $\epsilon$-badly approximable points. We compute the dimension of the set of such points up to the first order in $\epsilon$, via the thermodynamic method of Ruelle and Bowen. Geometric good approximations are related to a notion of bounded partial quotients for the Bowen-Series expansion. This gives a family of Cantor sets and associated quasi-compact transfer operators, with simple and positive maximal eigenvalue. Perturbative analysis of spectra applies. Our techniques only apply to non-uniform lattices admitting a finite index free subgroup satisfying a specific property.

Full families of generalized interval exchange transformations

We consider generalized interval exchange transformations, or briefly GIETs, that is bijections of the interval which are piecewise increasing homeomorphisms with finite branches. When all continuous branches are translations, such maps are classical interval exchange transformations, or briefly IETs. The well-known Rauzy renormalization procedure extends to a given GIET and a Rauzy renormalization path is defined, provided that the map is infinitely renormalizable. We define full families of GIETs, that is optimal finite dimensional parameter families of GIETs such that any prescribed Rauzy renormalization path is realized by some map in the family. In particular, a GIET and a IET with the same Rauzy renormalization path are semi-conjugated. This extends a classical result of Poincaré relating circle homeomorphisms and irrational rotations.

Persistent Hall rays for Lagrange spectra at cusps of Riemann surfaces

We study Lagrange spectra at cusps of finite area Riemann surfaces. These spectra are penetration spectra that describe the asymptotic depths of penetration of geodesics in the cusps. Their study is in particular motivated by Diophantine approximation on Fuchsian groups. In the classical case of the modular surface and classical Diophantine approximation, Hall proved in 1947 that the classical Lagrange spectrum contains a half-line, known as a Hall ray. We generalize this result to the context of Riemann surfaces with cusps and Diophantine approximation on Fuchsian groups. One can measure excursion into a cusp both with respect to a natural height function or, more generally, with respect to any proper function. We prove the existence of a Hall ray for the Lagrange spectrum of any non co-compact, finite covolume Fuchsian group with respect to any given cusp, both when the penetration is measured by a height function induced by the imaginary part as well as by any proper function close to it with respect to the Lipschitz norm. This shows that Hall rays are stable under (Lipschitz) perturbations. As a main tool, we use the boundary expansion developed by Bowen and Series to code geodesics and produce a geometric continued fraction-like expansion and mimic the key ideas in Hall's original argument. A key element in the proof of the results for proper functions is a generalization of Hall's theorem on the sum of Cantor sets, where we consider functions which are small perturbations in the Lipschitz norm of the sum.

Long Hitting time for translation flows and L-shaped billiards

We consider the flow in direction $θ$ on a translation surface and we study the asymptotic behavior for $r\to 0$ of the time needed by orbits to hit the $r$-neighborhood of a prescribed point, or more precisely the exponent of the corresponding power law, which is known as hitting time. For flat tori the limsup of hitting time is equal to the diophantine type of the direction $θ$. In higher genus, we consider a generalized geometric notion of diophantine type of a direction $θ$ and we seek for relations with hitting time. For genus two surfaces with just one conical singularity we prove that the limsup of hitting time is always less or equal to the square of the diophantine type. For any square-tiled surface with the same topology the diophantine type itself is a lower bound, and any value between the two bounds can be realized, moreover this holds also for a larger class of origamis satisfying a specific topological assumption. Finally, for the so-called Eierlegende Wollmilchsau origami, the equality between limsup of hitting time and diophantine type subsists. Our results apply to L-shaped billiards.

The Lagrange spectrum of some square-tiled surfaces

Lagrange spectra have been defined for closed submanifolds of the moduli space of translation surfaces which are invariant under the action of SL(2,R). We consider the closed orbit generated by a specific covering of degree 7 of the standard torus, which is an element of the stratum H(2). We give an explicit formula for the values in the spectrum, in terms of a cocycle over the classical continued fraction. Differently from the classical case of the modular surface, where the lowest part of the Lagrange spectrum is discrete, we find an isolated minimum, and a set with a rich structure right above it.

The Lagrange spectrum of a Veech surface has a Hall ray

We study Lagrange spectra of Veech translation surfaces, which are a generalization of the classical Lagrange spectrum. We show that any such Lagrange spectrum contains a Hall ray. As a main tool, we use the boundary expansion developed by Bowen and Series to code geodesics in the corresponding Teichmüller disk and prove a formula which allows to express large values in the Lagrange spectrum as sums of Cantor sets.

Diophantine approximations for translation surfaces and planar resonant sets

We consider Teichm\"uller geodesics in strata of translation surfaces. We prove lower and upper bounds for the Hausdorff dimension of the set of parameters generating a geodesic bounded in some compact part of the stratum. Then we compute the dimension of those parameters generating geodesics that make excursions to infinity at a prescribed rate. Finally we compute the dimension of the set of directions in a rational billiard having fast recurrence, which corresponds to a dynamical version of a classical result of Jarn\'ik and Besicovich. Our main tool are planar resonant sets arising from a given translation surface, that is the countable set of directions of its saddle connections or of its closed geodesics, filtered according to length. In an abstract setting, and assuming specific metric properties on a general planar resonant set, we prove a dichotomy for the Hausdorff measure of the set of directions which are well approximable by directions in the resonant set, and we give an estimate on the dimension of the set of badly approximable directions. Then we prove that the resonant sets arising from a translation surface satisfy the required metric properties.

Lagrange Spectra in Teichmüller Dynamics via renormalization

We introduce Lagrange Spectra of closed-invariant loci for the action of SL(2,R) on the moduli space of translation surfaces, generalizing the classical Lagrange Spectrum, and we analyze them with renormalization techniques. A formula for the values in such spectra is established in terms of the Rauzy-Veech induction and it is used to show that any invariant locus has closed Lagrange spectrum and values corresponding to pseudo-Anosov elements are dense. Moreover we show that Lagrange spectra of arithmetic Teichmüller discs contain an Hall's ray, giving an explicit bound for it via a second formula which uses the classical continued fraction algorithm. In addition, we show the equivalence of several definitions of bounded Teichmüller geodesics and bounded type interval exchange transformations and we prove quantitative estimates on excursions to the boundary of moduli space in terms of norms of positive matrices in the Rauzy-Veech induction.

Khinchin theorem for interval exchange transformations

We define a diophantine condition for interval exchange transformations (i.e.t.s). When the number of intervals is two, that is for rotations on the circle, our condition coincides with classical Khinchin condition. We prove for i.e.t.s the same dichotomy as in Khinchin Theorem. We also develop several results relating the Rauzy-Veech algorithm with homogeneous approximations for i.e.t.s.

Khinchin type condition for translation surfaces and asymptotic laws for the Teichmuller flow

We study a diophantine property for translation surfaces, defined in term of saddle connections and inspired by the classical theorem of Khinchin. We prove that the same dichotomy holds as in Khinchin' result, then we deduce a sharp estimation on how fast the typical Teichmuller geodesic wanders towards infinity in the moduli space of translation surfaces. Finally we prove some stronger result in genus one.
